AVERAGE! Passion may always win, but in the case of 'The Secret In Their Eyes', not so much. When a close-knit group of investigators, along with their supervisor, is suddenly torn apart when they discover that one of their own teenage daughter has been brutally murdered. Even with a first rate cast of Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, couldn't save what ultimately ended up being just a so-so movie. Julia Roberts, there's no denying gave an incredible performance, a mother going through the anguish and pain of losing her child, that you felt for her. Nicole Kidman did what she could with what she was given, but was tremendously underused here and Chiwetel Ejiofor, probably the piece that kept this movie together was rather impressive in his performance. Director and writer Billy Ray who wrote 'Captain Phillips', 'Breach', and 'State Of Play', couldn't do what he did for those films here, he tried to give us an intense and gripping piece of work, but ended up giving us a movie that felt more like an 'Law & Order: Special Victim Unit' episode, that wasn't very special at all. The movie was being dragged all over the place, the constant back and forth between 13 years took away from the movie and the only way you could tell the difference in years were by the characters hairstyle most of all. The forced romance between Nicole Kidman's 'Claire' and Chiwetel Ejiofor's 'Ray' added nothing of importance or interest to the story, just another aspect that wasn't needed at all. For what the story was suppose to convey, it just didn't give a strong emotional connection to it's audience and made you not invest so much time into it. One could say that the saving grace of this movie could be the twist that came out of left field, that probably no one saw coming, and as surprising as that twist was, there's no way of forgetting everything that led up to it, it just wasn't as interesting. This movie had so much potential, but fell very flat and didn't do justice to it's predecessor.
