Asks Comp 1/5
We don't even need to speculate about Vriska's hidden motives - even her stated motivation is dangerous.
As I said before, we know exactly how she 'helps' people.
Thank you! It's good to be back.
Act 5.2 has been fun so far. I didn't realize how much I missed the kids until we got back to their PoVs.
Homestuck could have opened on Rose, watching her mother drink herself into a stupor - or Vriska, tossing a corpse into her spider's pit. These events are canonical, but bringing them into sharper focus would turn the story into something very different.
That Homestuck chose to start with John tells us a lot about its identity. It's a dark story, in a lot of ways - but there are much darker stories, two steps to the left.
Sburb Any% in 23:59:59 (Green Sun skip)
Haha, that's fair, actually. Although you're probably not chastising them for failing to understand the time loops you're both navigating.
(If you are, though, you have the coolest job imaginable. Are you hiring?)
@gravity-rocks asked: Ooo, saw the person who asked you about your thoughts on lusii and troll evolution and thought I would pitch in with my little theory. I like to believe instead of lusii being the parasites, maybe TROLLS evolved as brood parasites. All these lusii seem to have consistent blood colors, and the blood colors always match the troll theyre a guardian of. I know we havent seen baby lusii, but maybe before they become "white" their babies are a bright color, and the bright blood colors of the trolls evolved as a way to trick the lusii into caring for them. Now, not all animals actually care for their young, so it's not a perfect strategy, so some creatures taking 'advantage' of this parasitism couldve evolved side by side, which I find super interesting. And with troll genetics and slurries, that made me wonder if troll genomes are particularly unstable and able to incorporate all sorts of other dna into it, like some bacteria - perhaps lending to this ‘infiltration’ power. The troll powers and mutations relating to their lusii is really really interesting, I mean we saw sollux’s ogre lusus with similar powers. I wonder if that sort of matching dna in subtle ways influences which trolls are adopted by which lusus. Alternatively an even more interesting explanation. Trolls grow their powers over time with their lusus and incorporate more of their dna over their lifetime with them. With huge wiggled populations, the way the genetics slurry with each other, and ease of mutation, perhaps it explains how intense their anti mutant and culling sentiments are, and why they might have evolved to be as extreme as they are.
This is some great speculative biology - I particularly like the idea that trolls are highly prone to mutation, like an alien Eevee.
It is interesting that Sollux shares his eye-beams with his Biclops. Their powers are identical, so there has to be some casual relationship between the two - we just don't know what direction it's in.
Aw, Kanaya. Neither of you is the Stupid Girl - it just feels that way when you have a crush!
I started shipping these two because they're my favorite characters - but I'm continuing to ship them because their relationship is cute as all hell.
For sure! The added context of Hivebent really adds a lot of texture to the plot. The playing field feels wider, and the stakes are much higher.
@manorinthewoods asked: What are your favorite songs from Homestuck? [ they listed their own faves but some are technically spoilers, will send them later! - C] . ~LOSS (25/4/23)
My current favorites are Descend, Dissention, Sburban Jungle, Upward Movement, and The Beginning Of Something Really Excellent!
Another album review is well past due, but Homestuck Volume 5 is longer than the first four combined, so I'll need to set a day aside to really take it in.
I never got an ask about this, so send away!
Zathura! Damn, it's been a while since I've thought about that movie.
I love the idea that every 'real' game in fiction is actually taking place in an infinite sea of monsters.
That's true, I guess, and you do need to get there to fight the final boss - but Sollux proved that you can freely fly between planets, if you have the means. The houses seem kind of redundant, if that's their only purpose, but I don't think it is.
Act 4, I think! Hivebent's troll worldbuilding is great - but Act 4 focused a lot more on Sburb's game mechanics, and that's still my favorite part of the comic.
We don't yet know the circumstances of his Exiling, but he probably needed to lose, to be Exiled the way he did.
As for why he needed to be Exiled the way he did... well, we've already talked about how weird and arbitrary these loops are. In the end, WV's army was just a casualty of causality - and messing around with causality is beyond the scope of the game.
Not impossible, necessarily - just beyond the scope of the game. Rose knows what I'm talking about.
It's either that, or the meteor's seed was what fell into the portal, and it grew to full size after it left the Medium. Either works.
It's impossible for me to choose - but I'll default to Descend. It was a great bookend to pre-Hivebent Homestuck.
Thanks for the list of names - and congratulations on your evolution to full blog status!
That's all true - and I never considered that Karkat would be jealous of John's social circle. Things are just easier for him - his friends all get along, and he doesn't need to needle them into working together. From Karkat's perspective, John barely has to do anything as a leader, while Karkat worked his ass off and still failed. Damn.
[ this post! ]
Hahaha, damn. I forgot about those early predictions.
I was right about the terraforming, I just wasn't thinking big enough. In retrospect, it's pretty funny that I only gave it a 1% probability - for all the help they were, I may as well have pulled those numbers out of thin air.
John's the kismesissitude mascot, after all!
Earth's a big place, so there could easily be thousands of unseen temples - but I'm starting to doubt they'll ever get any focus.
I've slowly begun to accept that Earth's other sessions might just be out of scope for this story. That's for the fanfiction authors - and, maybe, for 'semi-canon' spin-offs.
Yep, this chicken/egg stuff is so common for Sburb that it's practically routine by now. It's simply not possible to say whether Titles cause personalities, or vice-versa - both were 'simultaneously' encoded into the Alpha Timeline. The point is moot.
Yeah, quadrants really haven't shaken out the way the original infodump implied they would.
Karkat's Dark Crush on John doesn't seem nearly as toxic as whatever's going on with Jack and the Queen.
Is Karkat wrong about his feelings? Do Carapacians experience kismesissitude differently? Has Hussie quietly retconned some of Hivebent's quadrant stuff?
At this point, who knows. Alternia's original view of quadrants might not even matter - it's gone, and the surviving trolls are free to do their own thing.

Howdy!✨✨ Congratulations on 5k! You are literally one of the most talented writers I follow! Ilysm never change!💕
Alrighty, I was hoping for a male ship from Marvel? I'm nonbinary(they/them), I dye my hair frequently but currently it's black and short. Think like a shaggy grown out buzzcut. I have hazel eyes, a small nose and I'm 5'1. I'm a Gemini, an INTP, and a Hufflepuff. I have anxiety so I'm pretty quiet and nervous in public or around people I don't know but around my close friends I'm extremely outgoing. My friends say I'm the scariest in the friend group but I don't believe them lmao. I'm fairly confident that I'm autistic and I'm working towards getting a diagnosis. I'm not really the dating type but I suppose my type would be smart people who can make me laugh. Ive been wearing glasses since grade 7 and my eyesight keeps getting worse. I think my favorite feature would probably be my hair. If my hair looks nice I feel nice. I have this big birthmark that's right under my belly button and for as long as I can remember I've hated it but its whatever. My taste in music is honestly all over the place. Most of the music on my playlists come from wildly random artists that i don't even know the name of. But for the most part Id say Ajr, Abba, Huey Lewis, Billy Joel, anything 70's and 80's, and random Tiktok songs I take a liking to. My favorite author is Gordan Korman and I probably read 10 or so of his books in a year and a half which doesn't sound like a lot but it's an achievement in my books. Im in band and I play the clarinet. I wanted to play the saxophone because my mom played it but my 6th grade band teacher just gave me a clarinet and ive loved it ever since. (Would still love to play the sax tho) I'm in drama and id probably be an actor if I could do it without the fame. The only sports I actually enjoy are soccer and volleyball. But I don't even play them properly, I only play them in gym. Im planning on going into graphic design when I graduate. I love all things computers and technology, and I love to draw and being able to combine those two thing is amazing. My current favorite movies are Dead Poets Society, Mamma Mia, Spiderman into the Spider verse, Now You See Me, and Pride and Prejudice. I also really love nature documentarys, specifically ocean ones. I love the ocean alot, its probably one of my favorite topics. I really like deep sea creatures.
I can't really think of anything more. I hope this is enough lmao. I have a really weird perception of myself so when I have to describe myself I take a really long time. Also I really hope I'm not late with this. I know its the last day for ships. Ahhh that would be embarassing. You are literally the coolest. Thanks so much and have an awesome day/night!💕💕 lots of love!✨
What trope are you? Opposites Attract 💕
Your friends would describe you as scary. Peter's friends would say he's about as scary as a baby deer learning to walk. You love to read. Peter's more of the skimming and hoping for the best type. All the clubs you're part of, he had to quit because of Spiderman. You and Peter are part of different social circles. Sure, you know of him, much like the rest of the kids in your class, but you don't really know him. Not that well, at least. He's nice, nice to everyone, and that's good enough in your book. He doesn't cause trouble, he's not one of the mean kids or the ones who think High School is their whole lives. He doesn't make waves or cause trouble. You see him and Ned goofing off at lunch or in the hall, but other than that you don't really see him. And then you become lab partners.
Though Peter and Ned tried to have all the same classes, their labs got mixed up. You didn't realize you were the only ones without a partner until the teacher put you together. He was all smiles, offering jokes along the way. It wasn't the worst class you'd ever had. When you realized you'd be partners for the semester you were secretly grateful. You and Peter are both smart students. You know whatever group work you do, it won't be up to you to do it all. Through the school year, despite your many differences, you become friends. He always compliments your hair and teases you about the music you listen to. Aunt May has shown him similar movies and he may, or may not, know every word to every song in Mama Mia! You talk about your shared love of science and technology, too. You see more of him everywhere and you're happy about that. He's always willing to offer help when you're carrying too many books and of course tries to read things with your glasses on. When he's not in school, for reasons that always sound a little too detailed, you find yourself missing him. . . .
Peter doesn't realize it til the last weeks of the semester that your classes change, that he won't see you almost every day. He starts to panic, hating the idea of not seeing you anymore. Seeing you makes his days better and brighter. He loves to make you laugh with the worst jokes he can come up with. He adores how excited you get telling him about all the sea creatures you love to learn about. He never realized how you went from strangers to friends, and never wants to go back to that. You and Peter start hanging out more outside of school, beyond the homework and study groups. You spend hours watching movies and talking. You've both got big plans for the future. He doesn't want to ruin the friendship you have, bit he can't get you out of his head. If he doesn't tell you how he feels, he fears he'll never work up the courage again!
~ I hope you like it my love!!! Xoxoxo💜💖💜💖💜💖💜

What Nicktoon Reboots We Want to See Next
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
When ViacomCBS recently announced the slate of programming that would be coming to Paramount+, the rebranded streaming service formerly known as CBS All Access, the media conglomerate touted a rebooted version of the beloved Nickelodeon classic Rugrats. Described as a “reimagining of the classic ‘90s hit,” the new Rugrats will feature the voice cast from the original 1991 animated series, but present the babies in a brand-new, three-dimensional CG style.
“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”
Rugrats is not the only Nickelodeon property getting an update from Paramount+ The service also announced Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, the first-ever spinoff of SpongeBob SquarePants, new spinoffs, shorts and features set in the wildly popular world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, new live-action versions of both Dora the Explorer and The Fairly OddParents, and a continuation of hit kids sitcom iCarly.
One day the streaming wars will slow down, but until then, media conglomerates like ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia will lean on their wealth of existing intellectual property to entice buyers to sign up for a subscription to their respective streaming services. ViacomCBS is wise to tap into their Nickelodeon vault, as a whole generation of viewers weaned on Nickelodeon’s programming are now media buyers, many with families of their own. Driven by nostalgia and possibly fresh takes on old favorites, Nickelodeon IP could help Paramount+ catch up with its well-established competition.
With recent revivals like Invader Zim, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Hey Arnold! already delivered, here are some other potential Nickelodeon properties ripe for a reboot.
Danny Phantom
While Danny Phantom creator Butch Hartman may not be a favorite among the art community, Danny Phantom feels like the Nickelodeon property most fans are eager to see return. It’s easy to see why; the story of Danny Fenton, a teenager who’s transformed into half-human, half-ghost superhero Danny Phantom after an accident caused by his ghost hunting parents’ technology, had a unique comic book-influenced premise that lent itself well to interesting animation, colorful characters, and an excellent mix of action and comedy.
Superhero content has only further exploded since Danny Phantom’s cancellation in 2007, giving Paramount+ the chance to get in on the action with storytelling beats that are very familiar to Spider-Man fans. Hartman has already pitched Danny Phantom: The College Years on his YouTube channel and confirmed that a script for a live-action reboot exists. Whether the series returns in its classic style, a new CG rendering, or as a live-action property, Danny Phantom seems like a slam dunk just waiting to be thrown down.
My Life as a Teenage Robot
Speaking of superheroes, My Life As A Teenage Robot isn’t one of the most talked about of the old Nicktoons lineup, but it’s one of the series that’s held up the best. Credit that to Rob Renzetti’s art style, which used a classic sci-fi, Art Deco-inspired retro-futuristic look and a bold color palette. Centered on teenage robot XJ9 just trying to live her life as a normal, suburban teenager, the show got a lot of milage out of poking fun at the typical cliches about adolescence.
During MLAATR’s run, critics complained about the lack of complex storytelling, a problem that could easily be fixed by a new writing team focused on continuity and more epic action. Just like Danny Phantom, XJ9 would thrive whether she returns with a new look, in her classic style, or as a live-action interpretation. As long as there are teenagers, then stories about trying to fit in, feeling weird about your appearance, and achieving independence from your “creators” will always be around.
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters
Developed by Klasky Csupo, the same folks that brought you Rugrats, Rocket Power, The Wild Thornberrys, and As Told by Ginger, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was garish, gross, and grimy in all of the best ways. Embracing gross-out humor and some lightly nightmarish imagery, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters took style inspiration from Soviet cartoons, film noir, and movies like Blade Runner and Brazil. The show followed young monsters Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm as they attend Monster School below a dump in New York City.
The show was cancelled in 1997 due to worries about its “disturbing” content, but the darker quality of the show paved the way for series like Invader Zim and Courage the Cowardly Dog. New York has changed a lot since the ‘90s, which could give Aaahh!!! Real Monsters plenty of material to play with. A new series could bring our original trio back or introduce us to a new class of monsters, giving us plenty of new, weird creature creations.
KaBlam!
Maybe the absolute coolest Nicktoon to ever air on Nickelodeon, KaBlam! was a spinoff of All That conceived to be an “animated sketch series” which served as a showcase for alternative forms of animation, like stop-motion, live-action hybrid, cutout photo, and more. Hosted by animated characters Henry and June, KaBlam! featured recurring cartoons like Sniz & Fondue, Life with Loopy, The Off-Beats, and fan-favorites Action League Now! and Prometheus and Bob, alongside one-off shorts and music videos from artists like They Might Be Giants.
While we would absolutely welcome more Prometheus and Bob shorts, the KaBlam! banner could be brought back to give new creators a chance to showcase their skills and creativity. Technology has come a long way since the last KaBlam! episode in 2000 and there are plenty of new animation techniques that could be put to use.
Hey Arnold!
While the show was recently brought back to life in the form of a 2017 TV movie titled Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie, everyone’s favorite football head should be at the top of Paramount+’s list for a revival. Created by Craig Bartlet, Hey Arnold! ran from 1996 to 2004 and centered on fourth-grader Arnold as he navigated a facsimile of New York City while living in a tenement apartment with his grandparents and plethora of colorful characters.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Set to a brilliantly jazzy soundtrack, Hey Arnold! taught audiences about respecting different cultures and portrayed inner-city life and non-nuclear families in a positive light. Hey Arnold! holds up incredibly well, and Bartlet and company could pick up right where they left off in their last feature. The world could certainly use more of Arnold’s optimism and positivity.

🎃 Pumpkin: Favourite season?
I like them all for their respective things! I like summer the most because I am literally allergic to cold weather. But in the spring I like watching everything melt and turn green, in the summer I like to go outside (lmao), in the fall I like all the seasonal flavors and all the trees that change, and in the winter I like the energy surrounding December.
👻 Ghost: Do you get scared easily?
I don’t like jump scares but I have a high stamina for other kinds of things. In terms of real physical things that can scare me, spiders. In the adult-fear sense - losing control of things. This past year has been. A ringer.
🎃 Candy Corn: What’s your favourite kind of candy?
Raspberry and chocolate together, sour things generally! I got some sour gummi bears in a Halloween pack and they’re my favorite right now.
👻 Vampire: What is your favourite supernatural creature?
Ghosts. I like the stories associated with them.
🎃 Witch: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I would like to be able to shapeshift.
👻 Trick or treat: What was your favourite Halloween costume?
My favorite Halloween costume was when my parents dressed me up like baby Simba. It had a little bonnet shaped like Simba’s face, and a tail, and it was the best thing I’d ever experienced in my four years of life.
🎃 Black cat: Are you superstitious?
It depends on what it is.
👻 Ouija Board: If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
If I were to change my name, I’d probably go by my middle name. But personally I like all the parts of my full name. They all have the same number of letters and share the same third letter, so if I changed my name it’d have to fit lmao.
🎃 Graveyard: Do you know any good scary stories?
I’m reading a really good book with my partner called Her Body and Other Parties ( @queentoad there’s a retelling of the green ribbon story in there you might be interested in) and it’s good so far. We haven’t read it in a while because the last one we read was about a pandemic that destroyed the world and it felt a little too real hhhhhhhhh.
But I used to live in a mildly haunted house, according to my mom. Nothing wild happened but she swears there were ghosts there. I was too young to remember.
👻 Skeleton: Have you ever broken a bone?
I’ve broken my right wrist twice - once from falling down the stairs, and another time from jumping from the top of a slide. I thought it would be a good tag strategy. In high school I sprained my ankle so badly I passed out because I..........jumped off the top of stair landing because I......thought it would be a good cat-catching strategy. We call that a through line.
🎃 Werewolf: What is your favourite urban legend?
My favorite urban legend is the one we made up as a class in third grade. There were trails in the woods behind our elementary school and we used to be able to go on them during recess (used to being the operative word). These woods were close to residential houses but to 8-year-olds, it was the wilderness. Long story short, someone heard a chainsaw revving and then boom! We were all convinced there was a killer stalking everyone who used the trail. Did this stop us using the trail. This all came to head when my teacher told one of the boys in my class to bring a scary mask to school and hide on the trail, and then he convinced some of the students from our class to go explore it. I don’t know what happened because I had to sit at the punishment wall for getting a bad grade on a spelling test or something, but I watched all of them come running out the woods with the other kid chasing them. We weren’t allowed back on the trails after that, thanks for nothing Mr. K.
👻 Horror flick: Do you like scary movies?
Yes! I have a very special place in my heart for horror-comedy movies especially.
🎃 Haunted house: Would you prefer to live in the city or the country?
City over country all the time.
👻 Zombie: Do you think that you could survive a zombie apocalypse?
Nope! That one post about wrapping yourself up in all the cashmere you own and dying in bed during the zombie apocalypse is what I envision for myself, but without the cashmere because I don’t own any.
🎃 Cauldron: What kind of potion would you make if you had the opportunity?
Potion of no more periods. One-and-done. Boom. No health coverage necessary.
👻 Full moon: Do you prefer nighttime or daytime?
Early morning when the sun is up, and the evening when the sun is setting.
🎃 Corn maze: What is your favourite autumn activity?
My favorite autumn activity is all the stuff with apples and pumpkins. And going to orchards, watching scary movies.
👻 Broomstick: What exciting places have you travelled to?
I loved going to Edinburgh, I loved the weather and the architecture. We also got to go to Loch Ness, which was incredible. Dresden was also beautiful, and bright. Berlin was very modish and had excellent kebab. I’m going to remember Munich until I die. I got to visit Tuscania in Viterbo, Lazio Italy because we had a friend who was studying abroad there at the same time we were travelling - they filmed parts of the 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet there. Her boyfriend gave us a midnight ghost tour 👀 She was also taking a cooking class and her professor invited us to dinner at her restaurant/resort...honestly it was like living in someone else’s life. We went to France, spent a week in Barcelona. We wound up in Amsterdam on King’s Day completely by coincidence and it was the coolest experience. If I was going to pick two places to go back to, it’d be Edinburgh and Amsterdam. I regret not going to see Highclere Castle when I had the chance, because I was literally living 20 minutes away from it for four months. I can’t believe I told myself I didn’t really care about it that much. I also regret not making time to go to Ireland.
My sister also got first-class trip to Disney World in high school. It was probably a $15,000-$20,000 dollar experience and we would NEVER be able to do that unless she’d wished for it.

How do you rank the EQG films from favorite to least favorite?
Ooooohh that’s a good one let’s see
My favorite I think would be
1. Friendship Games. Between the introduction of Sci Twi and watching the girls each have their moment to shine and watching Sunset struggle to keep her chill and accidentally falling back on her bully-yelling; topped with one of my FAVORITE kinds of music!!!! SCHOOL SPIRIT MUSIC!!! It’s my favorite by far.
2. Sunset Shimmer’s Backstage Pass. Who doesn’t love Groundhogs Day shenanigans? Not to mention besides RoF it was the GAYEST of all the specials. And! It focused on my favorite girls! Pinkie pie and sunset! And Sunsets quest to figure out the Best Date Ever! AND! They rekindled the romance between the two pop stars they were so excited to see and got to perform with them! Everything about this special makes me happy, especially when Sci Twi gets involved and the reappearance of the Dazzlings! Such a good film.
3. Rollercoaster of Friendship of course! Next to SSBS it’s also one of the GAYEST specials ever and focusing on one of my longest standing ships: Rarijack. I also adore Rainbow’s struggles with the rollercoaster itself and Sci Twi and Sunset’s frantic struggle at the game booth. Vignette Valencia’s design is also one of my favorites even if her character wasn’t.
4. The Original Equestria Girls movie! Nothing like the shock of a canon high school AU. I enjoyed seeing the girls human forms revealed one by one and Twilight forgetting to be discreet all the time. And I loved watching the girls all rallying behind this new girl to take down a bully with singing and dancing.
I adore the absurdity of humans being pointed out too; giant skinny flesh creatures with spiders on the ends of their limbs. I’m also a fan of the portal’s sense of modesty and normalcy in allowing creatures from Equestria human clothing when they pass through. I know for a kids show that’s to be expected but it’s fashion sense is kind of Sorting Hat like? Which I find hilarious.
5. Forgotten Friendship! Shrugs I guess I just like watching Sunset struggle. And of course I love seeing her in her original pony form spending time with Twilight. Watching her fall back on old bullying habits when the school was turned against her in an effort to prove she’s not a bully is one of my favorite parts alongside Trixie’s investigative team up. She’s still learning and growing and somehow managed to get 2 new girlfriends??? I’ve always been confused by that scene of Flash pulling up in his car before the final confrontation? He just sorta stopped in the middle of the lane for no real reason, watched Sunset walk by, and what? Sat and watched the high school super squad take down a girl he can’t remember the name of? He didn’t even get out of his car, they just showed him rolling up no that was it but whatever.
6. The Movie/Dance/Mirror Magic specials! Who doesn’t love movie set shenanigans? And I loved being able to see the Crystal Prep girls again! And I love discovering Starlight Glimmer’s human form about as much as I hate Juniper Montage as an overall character. But I love Starlight so much. She’s so good. Such a good girl.
7. Rainbow Rocks is only so low on my list because I hate watching my girls fight :(. Like I know that’s the whole point but I hate RD’s cockiness?? Her bragging and insistence on being the star just made my heart cry. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Dazzlings, they’re some of the coolest villains ever and I’m really curious about their backstory I just. Wish my girls didn’t have to fight. Spike and Vinyl Scratch to the rescue though! Loved seeing my Mute Musician get some spotlight time!
8. Legend of Everfree didn’t really leave any kind of impression on me. It’s cool that the girls got some cool new rock jewelry that lets them tap into their equestrian magic wherever they go, and I love Sci Twi’s struggle with accepting her magic, but overall it left me kinda underwhelmed. The Whodunnit of it all was also really confusing? Trying to sort of frame Timber but also maybe frame filthy rich? I also just really don’t like Gloriosa’s voice. Her singing voice was great but otherwise I just didn’t enjoy her character.
9. Spring Breakdown was another one that left me kind of underwhelmed. Rainbow Dash once again trying to figure out a way to get in the spotlight and looking for a problem when there wasn’t one just left a bad taste in my mouth. I get that she enjoys using rainbow lasers and the praise that comes with it but also there’s a time and a place, yknow? Your friends are all just trying to enjoy their vacation and your actions are getting in the way of that? There’s a difference between social anxiety keeping you from doing things because you don’t wanna inconvenience someone and just being courteous. I’m not wishing social anxiety on rainbow dash at all, just some fucking tact. Manners in any regard? Consideration for her friends??? Human RD seems to struggle with thinking of anyone other than herself and frankly I don’t see how she represents loyalty within that context. It was fun watching Sunset bring RD and Sci Twi to Equestria and sneak them back to Twilight’s castle though, that whole sequence was really fun.
I won’t get into the mini shorts, but thank you for this ask! This was super fun!

Spider-Man, No More?
In the first Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, it appeared as if Peter Parker had no interest in taking his costumed alter-ego to Europe and some fans even wondered if the events of Avengers: Endgame had taken their toll on the wall-crawler, leading to him (temporarily) abandoning the mantle.
However, Watts makes it clear that this isn't a retread of the "Spider-Man, No More" moment from Spider-Man 2. "We tried not to be melodramatic in that way," he laughs. "You have a lot of things that have been done very successfully in the past, so you consciously avoid them. This is just for a week. Peter wants to go on vacation. He's earned it."
When Does The Movie Take Place?
With Watts confirming that this trip only lasts for a week, Feige shed some more light on the setting and it sounds like Marvel Studios may have abandoned the idea of jumping to a different year in Peter Parker's high school life going from film to film.
"We had talked about, do the Spider-Man films take place in his sophomore year/junior year/senior year, Harry Potter style?" However, it was then that the idea of a summer break came to mind. "We started homing in on that idea of the class trip. How do you continue the fun of a kid in high school with his high school friends?"
Getting London Right
Thor: The Dark World came under fire for it's geographically incorrect take on London, and Watts confirms that they looked at that movie when it came to making sure they got the city right this time around. "I think we got our London geography right. You don't put Big Ben next to Tower Bridge and hope no one will notice!"
When he was quizzed about a recent poster for Spider-Man: Far From Home which had the London Eye the wrong way around, he laughed: "I did not approve that!"
A Different Take On MJ
It's now become clear that Michelle/MJ is a new take on Mary Jane Watson, and after being described as being "a lot more Ally Sheedy in our movies" by Watts, Zendaya adds: "She's not the coolest girl in school, she's not the prom queen, she's not popular. Exploring that dynamic between two oddballs and loners is cool."
Producer Amy Pascal, meanwhile, notes that "The movie is about [Peter] wanting to get together with the girl. That's what makes him want to go on this trip."
Peter Parker's Relationship With Nick Fury
We've already heard that Spider-Man's relationship with the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director isn't quite as cordial as the one he had with Iron Man, and Holland has now shed even more light on that.
"The relationship between Peter and Tony is admiration," he explains. "The relationship between Peter and Nick Fury is more fear. I think he's a little bit terrified of him. When he shows up, it's no joke. He knows this isn't some silly mission. He knows the stakes are real and it's time to step up."
Why The Wall-Crawler Heads Overseas
Explaining that the idea to take Spidey "Far From Home" came during Spider-Man: Homecoming's international press tour, Watts elaborates on why he wanted to put the wall-crawler in new settings.
"Seeing Spider-Man in Venice was always on the list. I've seen Spider-Man swinging over buildings, but not over canals. We loved the idea of a big night festival going on in Prague, a beautiful medieval city."
The Elementals
While we recently learned that The Elementals known as Hydro-Man and Molten Man aren't necessarily the characters we know from the comics, Watts confirms that he wanted to deliver a new take on some lower tier bad guys from the hero's rogues gallery.
"I wanted to figure out if there was a way to take some more of the definitely B and C level villains and bring them to life in a way that's surprisingly cool. Who are people not going to expect?"
Spider-Man Vs. VFX
Of course, the possible downside of having Spider-Man face a group of VFX bad guys is that he'll be squaring off with huge CG monsters as opposed to an opponent who is a little more grounded. Watts relished the challenge. "It opens up a new style of combat for Spider-Man when you have bigger creatures, or a creature that's so hot he can't get close to him because it melts his webs."
"Or a water creature that you can't punch because you go right through it," he adds.
Jake Gyllenhaal Reflects On Not Being Spider-Man
When Tobey Maguire injured his back, Sony Pictures considered replacing him in Spider-Man 2 with Jake Gyllenhaal. That didn't happen, of course, but he's obviously now entering the wall-crawler's world by playing Mysterio. "I guess you could say that, when you work long enough, stories tend to come back around. There was a beautiful thing that happened here."
However, he doesn't believe that had he been able to play Spidey, he would have done half as good a job as Tom Holland. "Watching Tom Holland, I have to say that I wouldn't have held a candle."
Why He Chose Now To Board A Superhero Project
It seems like Gyllenhaal has spent years avoiding big budget blockbusters, so how did Marvel Studios finally convince him to change his mind? Feige confirms that "we met with him on some Marvel Studios movies long after Spider-Man 2 and just never found the right timing or the right thing," presumably alluding to those Doctor Strange rumours.
As for Gyllenhaal, he says: "Why now? This was a really interesting take on the characters. I really loved it, and thought, 'Let's have a little fun.'"
Mysterio Is Indeed A Hero Now
"In the comics, he's a washed up old stuntman who uses gas and puts springs in his shoes to to try to trick people," Watts explains, making it clear that some changes needed to be made.
"The idea of Mysterio as a hero was something we had never explored before," he continued. "Having the power of Marvel behind you means that you can make those crazy swaps. You'd hope there's a little more to it that it seems with Mysterio. But we went with Mysterio being a hero, which I thought would really surprise people. Mysterio was always at the top of the list."
As for Gyllenhaal, he adds: "Villain or hero, I don't think that's how you can define him."
Including The Helmet
One of the best reveals from Spider-Man: Far From Home has been the fact Mysterio has his classic helmet. "That was so fun to design," says Watts. "You take away the fish bowl, that's not Mysterio. It's such a classic design. It's my favourite design of all the Spider-Man characters."
Quentin Beck Fills The Void Left By Iron Man
"The relationship on the page changed when Jake and I met each other and became very fast friends," Holland explains shortly after revealing that Mysterio ends up being a substitute for Iron Man. "So you get to see two people become really quick friends, and teammates essentially. It's kind of like a two-hander between Jake and I."
"It's a pretty fun ride to see this kind of back and forth banter between these two superheroes, fighting these crazy monsters."
What Jake Gyllenhaal Learned From Tom Holland
When those comments were made known to Gyllenhaal, he had nothing but good things to say about his co-star. "Yeah, but Tom had a lot to teach me too."
"It's a whole new world to me. We became friends through the process of making the movie. It doesn't just work one way. It works both ways. That's what I like about it. Peter and Spider-Man have a lot to teach people, particularly in terms of friendship and giving."
No, Tom Didn't "Accidentally" Reveal The Film's Title
Tom Holland has become well-known for seemingly dropping MCU spoilers, but did he really reveal the sequel's title by mistake on Instagram last June? "That was totally planned!" the actor confirms.
"That was a complete press stunt," he continues. "I'm so cautious with what I put online when it comes to spoilers and stuff. Come on there's now way I would do that. I'm way better with spoilers than Mark Ruffalo - I love him, but he's a terrible spoiler. Sometimes they pair us together because it's easier to control one source than have both of us out there."

TT Rambles: Building a Kaiju Cast
As far as I’m concerned, the kaiju renaissance is in full swing - not just because of movies like Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Pacific Rim, but because of all the original novels, webcomics, etc. that the kaiju fandom is publishing. It’s beautiful to see all these new kaijuverses blossoming.
and I want to see more of them
It takes me back to that brief, shining period in the early 2000′s where there were DOZENS of thriving kaijuverses on Deviantart, all with weird and wonderful takes on giant monsters that oozed with style and creativity. God that was a good time and
I want to see more
So, as a person with a semi-successful kaiju-verse of my own, I’ve been thinking about how I could encourage people to make more kaiju beyond, like, just making my own and hoping it resonates and inspires people like the kaiju-verses that I see inspire me. And then my teacher brain got to thinking - one of the best ways to help people create is to give them structure to build off of. So that’s what I’m going to do.
Friends, enclosed here are some written instructions on how to build a fun and dynamic kaiju cast. You don’t have to follow these rules to the letter, mind you, but if you don’t know where to start, this might help.
Step 1: Pick Your Flavor
There are more ways to make a kaiju story than you may realize, as the genre is deceptively diverse despite its obscurity. However, for the sake of simplicity, I’m going to try to reduce it to two main categories:
Hero Monster(s) saves the world from evil monsters
OR
Hero humans attempt to save the world from evil monsters
This is a crucial fact to figure out before you make your kaiju cast, because the differences between these two variants will inform how you structure your monsters. In the first approach, the monsters not only need personality and motivations, but character arcs, and benefit from being as distinct from each other as possible. In the second, the monsters generally have to be a bit simpler and less, well, person-y, so we don’t feel as bad when they’re cut down by the heroes. They also tend to be more uniform in appearance, origin, and personality, to make the division between humanity and monster more clear cut. The first approach will generally result in a “humanity needs to be more open minded and compassionate to those we deem as other” sort of message, while the latter will generally show how humanity needs to pull together in the face of catastrophic threats. On the surface these two story routes may seem very similar, but the differences between them are important ones.
Step 2: The Main Kaiju
In addition to OC kaijuverses, another big trend in the glory days of the DA kaiju fandom was revamping/redesigning the cast of the Godzilla franchise. There were dozens of different takes on it, and a friend of mine noted a peculiar but important lesson that could be learned from each of them: if you looked at how each artist redesigned Godzilla himself, you could basically predict how the rest of the monsters would look. This is because Godzilla is the crux of his universe - all the other monsters are designed to play off of him, and thus any change made to Godzilla will be reflected in the rest of the cast.
You can see this in other stories as well - Batman’s cast is built around his gothic horror/detective fiction roots, Spider-Man’s around his teen drama/sci-fi genre mashup, etc. As a general rule, stories are tailored to their protagonist, and in kaiju fiction, the protagonist is generally one of the giant monsters. Therefore, figuring out your main monster is important, as they will ultimately shape the entire story.
Now, when I say “protagonist,” I mean this in the “main/most prominent character” sense, rather than the “hero” sense. Your main kaiju may be a bad guy - they may be the villain of the story, the face and root of its conflict. Alternatively, they may live up the hero label in every sense of the word - one of the coolest things about the Kaiju genre is that it sports a LOT of heroes that are also non-human characters.
If you are going for the second variation of the kaiju genre - that is, the “Humans destroy evil monsters” story - your main kaiju still matters, even though it likely isn’t a prominent enough character to really qualify for protagonist status. In shows like Evangelion and Ultraman, or movies like Pacific Rim, there are still essentially “main” kaiju - that is, kaiju who define the style and approach that monsters in the series will take. Often they’re the first monster the heroes encounter - Knifehead from Pacific Rim, for example, establishes early on the aesthetic and rough personality of the giant monsters featured in the movie. Other times they show up later in the story to make a big impact - Red King and Gomora in Ultraman both showcase the creativity of the show’s designs while having unique personalities and power sets that really leave an impact on the viewer.
When creating your main kaiju, consider the following questions:
- What if your monster’s main motivation? Is it looking for something? If so, what? Is it seeking revenge? If so, why? Is it defending its territory? Is it investigating civilization? Is it searching for food? Company? The greatest kaiju characters have clear and defined motivations to bring them into the plot, just like all good characters do. What is your monster’s drive?
- How tough is your monster? Kaiju generally get into a lot of violent conflicts, so determining how much punishment your monster can both withstand and dole out is important.
- What are your monsters’ vulnerabilities? This includes both physical weaknesses and psychological ones. Are they weakened by the cold? Incapable of flight? Slow moving? Quick to anger? Stupid?
- What strengths/powers does your monster have? Can it heal fast? Is it smart? Does it have unique weapons? Is it creative?
- What quirks does your kaiju have? Is it gluttonous? Cocky? Graceful? Clumsy? Does it beat its chest or dance in triumph? Does it cackle maniacally while wreaking havoc?
- What is your monster’s relationship to humanity? Does it hate humans? View them as food? Feel indifferent to them? Is curious about them? Cares for them? How does humanity feel about it in turn? Does this relationship change over the course of the story?
- What is your monster’s attitude towards other monsters? Is it hostile towards them? Friendly? Indifferent? Does its attitude vary depending on the monster? Is its attitude mostly consistent with a few exceptions? Does it have friends? Enemies?
- How did your monster come to be? Is it an atomic mutant? A mythic beast? A space alien? A prehistoric creature from a forgotten age? We’ll dive into the archetypes associated with these origins later, but keep the question in mind.
Part 3: Other Kaiju Roles
Once your main kaiju is figured out, you can start building the cast proper in reaction to it. There are LOTS of ways you can do this, but I’m going to focus on a few common roles supporting kaiju have to play:
- The Arch Enemy: the King Ghidorah to your kaiju’s Godzilla, the Gyaos to its Gamera, the arch enemy is exactly what it sounds like: your main kaiju’s recurring nemesis, a big bastard of a monster that your main kaiju absolutely hates. You don’t have to limit yourself to one of these, of course - most main kaiju in fiction have a LOT of enemies, since monster battles are one of the main draws of a kaiju story. At the same time, most kaiju stories also tend to have one kaiju that is more wicked than most, whose grudge with the main kaiju is more vicious than normal. Creating an arch enemy for your main kaiju is a good way to give your story structure - every protagonist needs a primary antagonist to struggle against.
- The Guardian of the Earth: a lot of main kaiju tend to be anti-heroes, often starting off as enemies of mankind before slowly becoming protectors of the earth. As a result, a lot of kaijuverses often include an explicitly good kaiju who exists in contrast to both the main kaiju AND the main kaiju’s enemies. If the Arch Enemy kaiju is often what the main kaiju could become if they don’t change their ways, the Guardian of the Earth is what the main kaiju usually works towards being. Or, in short: every Godzilla needs a Mothra to be the angel on their shoulder.
- The Damage Sponge: Sometimes there are kaiju who are famous not for their prodigious destructive power, but rather for their ability to endure ridiculous amounts of damage, even by kaiju standards. The damage sponge normally isn’t the main kaiju, since the main kaiju’s job is to establish a baseline, while the damage sponge is defined by being more durable than other monsters.
- The Runt: a smaller than usual kaiju, who often compensates by being faster and more clever than the usual kaiju.
- The Giant Among Giants: the kaiju that makes other kaiju feel small, generally used to escalate the plot by its sheer power.
- The Rival Turned Ally: since kaiju generally socialize by fighting, most kaiju friendships begin with an unsuccessful fight to the death. Often your main kaiju will have at least one friend who began as a bitter enemy.
- The Big Eater: In large kaiju casts where the kaiju have different motivations and morals, there will almost always be one kaiju whose ethos can be defined as “neutral hungry.” It’s not good, it’s not evil, it just wants to eat, and unfortunately everyone else looks like a viable meal.
- The Brute: while all kaiju are generally violent and tough, the Brute takes it to another level. Its violence will be more extreme, its bloodthirstiness beyond compare, and its raw strength will surpass most if not all of the other monsters on the cast list.
- The Clever Bastard: like the Brute, the Clever Bastard makes for a harder than normal fight. However, instead of relying on sheer strength, the Clever Bastard uses cunning to make the fight more vicious, being a devious schemer who thinks significantly more than the average monster. It may also have more than a few tricks to its biology to help it as well, and generally manages to throw the heroes off guard by doing things they wouldn’t expect.
- The Innocent: in a world full of violent monsters, this kaiju is a notable exception for its sweetness and (relative) vulnerability. It means no harm and often has few ways to defend itself, and as a result is generally imperiled by the more vicious and bloodthirsty giants in the setting. The main kaiju may actively try to protect it, though the harsh world of kaiju means its likelihood of survival is rather slim.
Part 4: Kaiju Archetypes
Ok, now that we’ve talked about the more substantive personality based stuff, let’s get onto some fun surface details. The origin and design of your kaiju are important in their own right, but work best when they are made in service of your kaiju’s personality and role in the story. A lot of people start with these archetypes first - “I’m gonna make a fire breathing reptile!” - and while this can result in a good monster design, it doesn’t necessarily translate into a memorable kaiju character. Tailoring the design and origin to your kaiju’s role and personality, on the other hand, is more likely to result in a character we remember, since the design is now more than a surface detail - it’s an extension of the character.
Archetype 1: The Fire Breathing Reptile - best exemplified by the big two, Godzilla and Gamera, almost every kaijuverse has at least one big reptilian monster, and that monster likewise almost always has the ability to breath fire. It calls back to the many European dragon myths, and is just a fun visual in general. This archetype is so prolific that many modern kaijuverses actually skip it because it’s considered cliche, but while it may be hard to make a fire breathing reptile kaiju standout, the trope is still a classic and one many people think of as synonymous with the genre.
Archetype 2: The Big Ape - similarly, King Kong has made giant apes a staple of the genre, to the point where they are almost as common as fire breathing reptiles are. King Kong vs. Godzilla in turn made it customary to pit these two archetypes against each other, and as a result every kaiju story that has both a fire breathing reptile and a big ape will almost always portray them as natural enemies. The Big Ape is one of the archetypes that is most likely to be presented as sympathetic/heroic, following the logic that more closely related to humanity a creature is, the more noble it must be.
Archetype 3: The Magnified Bug - since kaiju are in part defined by being way bigger than an animal has any right to be, one of the most extreme visuals you can bring to a kaiju design is to take something that is normally very small and make it HUGE, because this emphasizes just how exaggeratedly big the kaiju is. As a result, giant arthropods - insects, spiders, etc. - are very common in the genre, as they really sell the idea of kaiju being unnaturally enormous creatures. Magnified bugs are generally not treated as sympathetic kaiju for the same reason big apes usually are - if we treat “more human = more good” as true, then bugs, being distantly related to humanity, can’t be very good creatures. However, there is at least one prominent and notable exception to this rule, and to be honest it’s a rather shitty rule anyway.
Archetype 4: The Mechanical Doppelganger
Ever since Mechani-Kong stepped onto the silver screen, it has been a tradition for a main kaiju to have a robot or cyborg made in their image as part of their rogues gallery. Hell, even Gomora from Ultraman got one, and that’s a show where the monsters aren’t protagonists! Like the previous tropes, this is one that comes to mind when people think of the genre, as countless parodies (including an infamous episode of South Park) have shown.
Archetype 5: The Alien Invader - a monster from another planet, with all the strange biological quirks such an origin implies. In Monster Saves the World kaiju stories, the alien is usually brought in late in the tale to heighten the stakes by delivering a stranger threat than the usual kaiju. In Humanity Saves the World kaiju stories, however, most kaiju tend to be alien in origin, which is used to justify wiping them out since they are an invasive species by nature. Alien kaiju are rarely sympathetic or heroic.
Archetype 6: The Mutant - whether the result of atomic fallout, genetic engineering, pollution, or some other unnatural mistake, the mutant is a new lifeform whose monstrous form is the direct result of humanity breaking the natural order of things. A LOT of kaiju are mutants, as the kaiju genre began during the atomic age as a direct reaction to the discoveries of what radiation could do to living creatures (discoveries that ranged from “Wow these radioactive fruits are really big!” to “Oh god this radioactive man is full of tumors!”). When a mutant is in a kaiju story, it exists at least partially to point out how humanity is screwing up.
Archetype 7: The Prehistoric Monster - often (but not necessarily) going hand in hand with the fire breathing reptile, the prehistoric monster is a kaiju whose kind lived millions of years before humanity evolved, in a time when giants ruled the earth. It is only a monster now because the world moved on while it didn’t - small creatures took over while it slumbered in some hidden location. This trope is becoming less common now that science has marched on and we treat the giant fauna of prehistory less like monsters and more like, y’know, actual animals, but it’s still a fun one to play with even if it has little basis in actual science.
Archetype 8: The Sea Monster - the ocean is full of weird animal life, and creatures are able to get much larger underwater than they can on land. As a result, giant sea monsters are a trope as old as story-telling itself, and are particularly prominent in kaiju fiction. Sea monster kaiju have a tendency to be particularly huge and abstract as kaiju go - one of the perks of hailing from a relatively alien environment.
Archetype 9: The Mythic Monster - While the earliest kaiju stories lean more sci-fi than fantasy, the genre quickly stretched to take elements from both. As a result, it is just as common to see kaiju based on real life myths as it is to see ones that are atomic mutants or space aliens. In fact, some of the bigger names in the kaiju genre have even alternated between having sci-fi and mythic origins, being atomic mutants in one tale and guardian monsters of ancient kingdoms in the next.
Archetype 10: The Defense Robot - Often (but not always) overlapping with the Mechanical Doppelganger, this enormous mecha is humanity’s ultimate weapon in the struggle to survive a world filled with kaiju. The actually effectiveness of the defense robot varies from story to story, but they often have greater offensive capabilities than flesh and blood kaiju while at the same time being a lot less durable. The Defense Robot rarely gets out of a battle unscathed - though it just as often comes back with a new remodeled look to fight another day (and also sell more toys).
Archetype 11: The Human Kaiju - most common in Humanity Saves the World from Kaiju stories, the human kaiju is, well, a human who becomes a kaiju. Sometimes it’s a temporary transformation, other times it’s permanent. Human kaiju are almost always the main characters of their given story, as the story potential of a human who can take the fight to the monsters is VAST.
Archetype 12: The Blob - our final archetype will be the blob, because sometimes you just want a big ol’ heap of goo in your story.
Conclusion
To reiterate, none of these things should be considered “requirements” for a kaiju story. Think of this as a set of guidelines rather than strict rules to follow. Many of the best kaiju stories have thought outside these archetypes, roles, and character questions, so you should by no means feel constricted to follow these ideas to the letter. However, if you want to start on your kaijuverse but don’t know where to begin, please consider this as a starting point. If you work with this approach, I think you’ll be on your way to making a fun cast of giant monsters in no time!

It’s finally time
Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review
Hee hee i had a shit ton of this done already and then my dumbass accidentally closed the tab so yeah :’)
For some reason, this took me so long to want to write. I saw the movie this afternoon, and it’s almost midnight as I’m writing this. Granted, I am on vacation and was a little busy, but I just needed time to process this movie. The movie seemed really dense to me, and I just had to scroll through tumblr looking at other posts to finally get the nerve to write this.
So, the moment you’ve all been waiting for...
***SPOILER WARNING. MAJOR PLOT POINTS AND THE ENDING OF THIS WILL BE DISCUSSED SO IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS DO NOT CONTINUE***
Just as an FYI, I saw this with my sister, a fan of the MCU, and my dad, a diehard DC fan but just saw this for shits and giggles. And I will be referencing endgame a lot during this too.
- Did I like it?
Yeah!!!! I loved the humor in it, and the plot was well written. Mysterio is an awesome character in this, though he is a villain.
- What didn’t I like?
(I’ll go into more detail later) The cgi in this, the lack of some of the topics introduced in endgame, the casts’ age, and some of the Peter X MJ scenes (I said some! I do love Peter and MJ together!)
- Pacing?
Honestly? Pretty good for a marvel movie. Marvel usually has some issues with pacing *cough cough endgame cough cough*, but I was thoroughly impressed with this one. Everything seemed well drawn out, and I was never left feeling that a certain scene was too long/short. Kudos because that I am very picky with pacing lol
- Humor
This movie is probably one the funniest movies in the MCU, and it was one of the most memorable aspects of the movie. The morning announcements made my sister and myself wheeze and I had tears rolling down my face as I cackled. Ned and Betty were the truest presentation of Highschool romance I have ever seen. Starting on a whim, being attached to the hip for a few weeks (maybe even a few months), and then breaking up. I honestly loved them together. I’m happy they didn’t go down the “sad and neglected best friend” route with Ned because he deserves so much better. “I’m strong and sticky” made my stomach hurt because I was laughing so hard. PETER BITCH-SLAPPING FLASH WHEN HE WOULDNT GIVE BACK THE GLASSES. AHDHDBDJDHDJ
- plot?
I thought the plot was really clever. Like I said earlier, anyone could see mysterio’s real side from a mile away, but the way they went about the conflict and the climax of the story was very interesting as well. The only thing is that when they were first explaining the secret plan and thinking everyone, I got a little lost. I did finally realize how the bots produce an illusion, but I kind of had to figure that on my own. I was confused how things were being broken and destroyed by the creatures, but the team said that nothing was actually getting broken because it’s all just an illusion. Idk there were some plot holes, but they got mostly filled, so I’m not worried about it lmao.
- Favorite character?
While I do love Ned with every fiber of my being, he just didn’t have the same spark that he did in homecoming. Maybe that’ll change as I see the movie again, but my favorite character in this movie was definitely Mysterio. Jake Gyllenhaal is a phenomenal actor, and I don’t think anyone could have pulled off Mysterio like he did. As I assume most of the internet knows, Mysterio is an actual villain in the Spider-Man comics, and he has powers that create illusions, and I thought that this was a really cool way to portray Mysterio with making him a person. Even without knowing that Mysterio is a villain in the comics, it wasn’t that difficult to predict that he would reveal that he’s a villain. Thinking back, there was a part during the the fight with the fire monster in Prague when something broke off of the Ferris wheel, and I thought to myself “damn, it was almost like the Ferris wasn’t really there” And the illusion scene was by far the coolest scene in the entire movie. It gave me strong Doctor Strange vibes (I wonder why I like I so much lmao) and it showed how vulnerable Peter is. But Mysterio has the aura that just made you love to hate him, and I love characters like that.
- Soundtrack?
It was awesome. Mysterio’s theme is definitely the best. I actually listened to the soundtrack before I saw the movie, and it was cool to hear some of the familiar tunes. It would fucking awesome to hear an ensemble perform the Far From home suite live.
- Peter and MJ
Okay, I understand what they were trying to do with their relationship: display a typical, awkward high school relationship. Ngl, they kind of overdid the awkwardness. Not every relationship is both people constantly stuttering and muttering when they’re next to each other. And that fuckin kiss. It made me so uncomfortable. Me and my sister literally looked at each other and said, “That was the most awkward thing I have ever seen in my entire life” after the kiss. I like that the writers were trying to break from the stereotypical high school relationship, but I do think they overdid the awkwardness a bit.
- WHERE THE HELL WAS MORGAN STARK
HOW DARE YOU RIP A FATHER FROM A BOY AND GIRL AND NOT HAVE THEM INTERACT AT ALL. This is probably one of my biggest critiques because this movie makes it look like they introduced Morgan just to take her away. Same with Harley! Imagine how awesome peter and Harley could be together.
- CGI
Okay, I blame my dad for this. He was the one who introduced me to CGI (Computer-generated imagery) and how to spot it. In marvel movies, CGI is not uncommon, especially in the fight scenes. And I honestly did not give endgame enough credit when it came to CGI hulk. He looked absolutely phenomenal, but I have to say that a good amount of the CGI in this movie was rough. I always say, if you can tell it’s CGI, then it’s bad CGI. It’s really hard to explain, but if something looks like it belongs in a video game rather than in a live action movie, then the CGI is pretty rough. It takes experience to learn how to point it out. Mysterio didn’t look bad the entire time, but some shots of him floating (like the rooftop scene) just looked so fake. And the swinging scene at the end was absolutely horrendous. It looked like MJ was swinging with the peter from the ps4 videogame. The background imagery and the elemental monsters looked real for the most part, and they looked great and real. Just some character mods were really wonky.
- Cast
Okay, I’m going to just say it. What the fuck was that cast? To me, everyone looked so much older than the first one. Like I get it that some of them were “blipped” and aged, but holy shit Ned and peter looked so much older than in the first movie. And, holy shit, Peter is ripped in this movie. I know Tom mentioned in an interview that he was more buff in this movie compared to homecoming, but he was so much more, for lack of better phrasing, wide.
I mean, come on
If the next movie is set in high school again, I honestly have no idea what they will do because, right now, Tom is 23 and Zendaya is 22. And yes I get it that it’s not that old, but if the next one is going to wait 2 years at least for the next Spider-Man movie, they’ll be less like high school students and more like adults.
And while I would have been extremely pissed if they changed the cast, I’m just kind of peeved on how mature the cast looked.
- Ending?
The first ending was what everyone wanted. I could have left the theater then and would have been perfectly fine. But I had to watch the end credits scenes. And then my world crumpled. Hearing Mysterio reveal Peter was so surreal. Almost too surreal... but that’s for another post ;). It provides for a great cliffhanger, but it makes me wonder how they’re going to continue the MCU from here. Obviously, they’re going to do the Black Widow Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (hopefully) but what next? Is there going to be another “avengers” movie? If so, what about Peter? Bc he’s in quite the pickle rn. And the pair credits scene just confused me ngl. So, Fury and Hill were never actually there? It does make sense why fury didn’t catch onto some things, but it does allow for some interesting conversations. This plus BARF equals who knows what for the future because this stuff is practically the reality stone. No one knows what’s real or not. And that’s scary. Also, does the multiverse exist? I know Beck and his crew made some stuff up for the purpose of tricking Fury and Peter, but the avengers still used the quantum realm to time travel, and who knows what types of alternate universes that created.
What does the future hold? No one knows
But it does allow for interesting theories ;)
Side note: I really noticed the resemblance in these in ffh
Hey marvel please introduce Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds into the MCU thansk ily

MOD Review: Kong Skull Island
“What is a King...
(!WARNING! It contain spoilers if you haven’t seen it or play it don’t read!)
This is a good Kong movie which Peter Jackson King Kong film is one my favorite which I also have the game too. When they announce this movie I was confuse on the title and got not interested in it but when shown again I’m now interest! Kong now is more bigger and cooler too. From this type of movie I sometimes guess who’s gonna die in the movie and some I got it right like somehow I usually do these things in Jurassic Park movies but in Kong Skull Island is kind of easy to see. We the guy who see Kong as the enemy, some random soldiers leaving some to live, the guy with the camera, the one guy who is news reporter maybe, the blonde girl, and 3 random people who is with the camera guy but we also bring in in this movie the old guy who was there during world war with Japan that crash her and stuck on island with the natives for many years. Also this is really different from previous Kong movies which this one doesn’t have like dinosaurs or stuff in the movie just some animals that live there that are dangerous and gentle giants but still keep the Kong stuff in the movie which is still good. I even got to read that Skull Island comic and it goes along with the movie which is good.
It starts off with a war going on in 1944 (midst WW II)with the American and Japanese who crash on the island which Kong is like “Ok which one of you fuckers just crash their metal birds and blew up during my nap.”
Which skip to 1973 with a tracking excerpt with Monarch to go and search a mysterious island that was found in the satellites to see whats on it along side with some military soldiers, Samuel L Jackson, Some dude with the briefcase, and 2 random people who just suddenly join in this project to go to the island.
As they get to the Island with alot of helicopters they just started to bomb the island with napalm bombs but one of them get hit by a tree like a javelin like HOLY SHIT! which arise from the cool sun scene is Kong who just go and destroying, stomping, and ate one soldiers and helicopters which Jackson sees him as a threat to mankind and angry cause he kill his men. The gang got separated trying to find each other which Jackson ask “Where are we and don’t dare say What to me” to the camera man who said that they’re on an island filled with monsters meaning there are dangerous more here.
(One of the soldier who friend with the photographer is lost in wood where he see kong fighting and ate a giant squid, a wood log mantis thing but also die from a skull crawler.) Along the way Gang 1 find skull island native and the surviving soldier from the beginning of this film who learn that these people build this wall too keep out predators from killing them and threats which Kong fights. They see Kong Protector of Skull Island and god too which he protect the native from Skull Crawlers which are replacement for the usual carnivore dinosaur rival but they’re more dangerous and the Kong family been at war with them over many years and Kong is the last and youngest of his kind and was born during the war as his parents die in it. So after all that the blonde girl go out and see a giant buffalo trap under the crash helicopter and she try to push it off but Kong from out of nowhere came and pick up the chopper and stares down at her then leaves.
The Gang began to leave the village waving goodbye till along the way the briefcase guy got taken away by some flying bird creature with some knife head crest using it to cut limbs off of him in the air which is just wow. Meanwhile Gang 2 got caught in some spider leg thing which brutally kill one soldier and almost ate one but they kill it. But they regroup with them at Kong parent resting place meaning graveyard where they fight the bird things and Skullcrawlers that ate the camera man by blowing it up.
Night time Jackson have plan to lure Kong to the lake which is covered in some liquid thing that can set the whole lake on fire to burn Kong down when it’s bonding with the blonde girl. He said “I have it with these mother fucking monkey on this monkey Friday island!!!” But soldiers said he’s crazy and tells him to stop cause doing that can unleashed a bigger Skullcrawler. This then kill Jackson before he can blew up Kong when Kong slam his fist down on him but pin down by the Skullcrawler. So the Skullcrawler chases them down Kong comes in and fight it then humans back him up and Kong fight more on the big serpent kaiju which is the coolest fight scene I seen in any Kong movie. He use a whole tree as a baseball bat and the propeller of the boat as a mace like weapon and use that to cut it’s throat which is so badass!!!
But that didn’t kill it when Kong accidentally hurt the girl and the Skullcrawler got her in his hand so he like “know what fuck this!” and just pull it’s tounges and guts out which is now 100% dead! Oh and also the girl still alive in Kong hand too somehow. After that they finally escape Skull Island and the old man finally return home to his family which he can get his baseball game, hot dogs, and beer for the longest time...
But before we say it’s over The two monarch agent show the girl and photo guy that Kong isn’t the only King which bring us the sequel to King of the Monsters!
So the movie is really great and good too. The year it take place in is very interesting cause to tell you guys Kong is still young and he still growing meaning till 2020 he will fight Godzilla in the next movie after King of the Monsters. Kong has amazing design and thing so weird in the movie is that he comes in like a full on ninja like how does no one feel the ground shake when he walk like how? But the final fight scene takes the cake too. The actors are good and easy to remember too. We got to know some stuff about Skull Island more too. I bet they just have fun thinking of the fight scene or something cause that’s just so good! Though some part still weird place like some characters are interesting and they just get kill in the movie when we thought they’re gonna live the whole movie I’ll give this movie..
8/10

MONTHLY MEDIA: April 2018
Not a lot of TV this month so lots of time to read and see movies and play games. Here’s how I spent the month of April!
……….FILM……….
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) This is a movie that captures everything I love and don’t love about mainstream comics: it’s really only enjoyable if you’re caught up on the individual films and if you’re caught up on everything else then you’re gonna find something to enjoy. With that said, I’m also really impressed with the consequentiality that’s explored here. There are legit stakes and I appreciated that level of surprise and suspense from a movie like this.
Green Room (2015) I’m not sure I’ve ever been more stressed during a film. The pacing is great, the characters are charismatic, and holy heck is this a...violent film. Not in a Saw sort of way, but in a way that makes me think this is what real violence with knives and guns looks like. If you can stomach it, it’s worth the watch.
A Quiet Place (2018) Another really tense, engaging film, and a brisk 1.5 hours long! The creature design really grew on me and while the final shot was...a departure from the rest of the film, it was a really great execution of a solid premise.
Ready Player One (2018) Now I understand why people either love or hate the book. It was the cinematic equivalent of how I felt walking into a comic book store as a child: lots of cool stuff to look at and a clear vibe that if I didn’t already know what everything was then I had no right being there. It wasn’t a great feeling then and it isn’t a great feeling now.
……….TELEVISION……….
The Good Place (Episode 2.01 to 2.13) To share a lot of why I like this show may be to reveal a lot of the plot and I think that’s a disservice. What I want to say is that it’s been a while since I’ve watched a show that was briskly paced and was built on a premise that had me genuinely wondering where the show would go next. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for some fantasy, or maybe it’s because this is a tight cast and an engaging plot. If you haven’t tried the show out, don’t do any research and go check out season 1.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Episode 5.12 to 5.18) Oh it’s good to be back. Still a beautiful cast and now I realize 2/3 of my current tv is made by Michael Schur. And Pimento!
Terrace House: Opening New Doors (Episode 1.01 to 1.04) It’s good to be back! I like the vibe of this as it more closely captures the spirit of the first season i watched (Boys & Girls in the City). The northern environment also adds a nice touch. Very excited for what’s to develop and Mizuki is obviously the coolest.
……….READING……….
The Fall of the House of Cabal by Jonathan L. Howard (Complete) Ugh what a fitting conclusion to the series. I suppose it could keep going, but it really wraps up in a way that if there were no more stories, I still feel satisfied. I can’t recommend it enough and if you haven’t gotten into the world of Johannes Cabal yet, start with the first novel, Johannes Cabal: The Necromancer.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe by Ryan North & Erica Henderson (Complete) This is a perfect graphic novel. It told a standalone story yet made me immediately want to pick up the ongoing series! It’s all ages and is super super funny and Squirrel Girl is the sort of well-rounded individual who SHOULD be a superhero. Also if anyone knows how I can get the gig to do one of Deadpool's Guide to Super Villains Cards Trading Cards, lemme know.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection Vol. 5 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Mateus Santolouco, Cory Smith, Dan Schoening, and Sophie Campbell (Complete) This volume made me realize that the story of the ninja turtles is one of family and gangs/factions. The turtles, the Foot, Krang and the Utroms, and now the Mutanimals all have their own agendas and schemes. This volume dipped into more of the side stories of the series (Turtles in Time!) and I still can’t recommend the series enough to any Turtle fan.
Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Collection 3 by Brian Michael Bendis & Mark Bagley (Complete) I found the first conflict in this volume (a burglar dressing up as Spider-Man) to be a little underwhelming. Then I realized it was setting up Peter to be ready to change costumes (the black suit that becomes Venom) and it was a brilliant stroke of writing. The ultimate version of Venom (and the version in the Spectacular Spider-Man series) has always been strong for giving him a greater history/connection with Peter and the book is stronger for it.
……….AUDIO……….
Eternal Champ II by Sweet Valley (2018) I’ve been so ready for this album! Eternal Champ is fantastic and the sequel doesn’t let you down. There are classic video game samples and a few unexpected ones, but the whole album is solid.
Deadly Manners (Podcast) Ten episodes of pure murder-mystery fun! The characters and plot are a lot of fun and the whole thing has a nice radio drama vibe. Kristen Bell plays the host of a dinner party and RuPaul is a lot of fun as a fortune teller. The rest really needs to be heard for itself. Go listen.
……….GAMING……….
Dungeons & Dragons Hexcrawl Campaign (Wizards of the Coast) The party has finally set out on an adventure again! They’re waltzing right past some of their easier tasks because they found out about an ancient temple to a dragon god and now they wanna check that out. We’ll see what happens!
Dungeons & Dragons Homebrew Campaign (Wizards of the Coast) This adventure is back underway! When last we left off, the party was surrounded by a traitorous duke in a sneaky forest and the threat was actually the druid’s sister! Now the group has healed said sister, thwarted the duke (via axe and octopi and firebolts) and are now on their way back to homebase to recover and plan next steps.
And that’s it! As always, I’m up for any recommendos you may have so send them my way and happy Monday!

Nightbooks: A Kids Movie That’s Too Scary?
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
I’m not quite sure who Nightbooks is for. As marketed, the latest Netflix original film appears to be a fantasy-driven horror film for kids and tweens. But the movie itself, which deals with themes of child abuse and features some objectively terrifying monsters, may be too dark for that demographic. This can be an issue with book-to-film adaptations. What works for kids in a literary format can sometimes be too scary once brought to life on-screen. That being said, for adults and kids who have a high tolerance for horror, the Sam Raimi-produced Nightbooks is definitely worth a watch. A gorgeously rendered horror world with a character-driven mystery at its heart, director David Yarovesky’s adaptation of J.A. White’s 2018 middle grade story is a truly rewarding spooky season experience that’ll appeal to adults and kids who are willing to delve into its secrets.
Nightbooks doesn’t waste time throwing its protagonist, kid writer Alex (Winslow Fegley, in giant spectacles), into a scary situation. The movie begins with Alex in distress, driven from the safety of his Brooklyn apartment by his own overwhelming emotions. We won’t learn why Alex is so upset until the film’s climax, one of a few mysteries at the heart of Nightbooks that will keep viewers emotionally engaged through the terrors that follow. At first, all we know is what happens next: Alex is lured into a magical apartment by evil witch Natacha, played by a terrifying and unpredictable Krysten Ritter. Natacha easily makes the decision to dispose of Alex until he convinces her of his value: He can write scary stories. Natacha stays her magical hand, and Alex lives on one condition: he must tell Natacha a new scary story each night.
Alex isn’t the only prisoner of Natacha’s (honestly gorgeous) apartment. There is Yasmin (Lidya Jewett), a slightly older girl who has been left understandably jaded from her much longer tenure as Natacha’s plaything. Yasmin, who has a penchant for science and magical botany, tends to Natacha’s plants and does other chores around the massive apartment, which cannot only expand to hold anything Natacha might need or want, but also can travel anywhere in the world—kind of like an evil TARDIS. Finally, there’s Lenore, a figuratively prickly cat who can literally turn invisible at will. The cat probably has the best character arc in the entire film, which is not to say that the film doesn’t do interesting things with its characters, just that Lenore’s journey is the most complex and unexpected. Overall, Nightbooks keeps its cast of characters small, which lends itself to a story that is not as interested in creating complex dynamics as it is unfurling the mystery of each characters’ individual psychology.
If this movie were bad—which it is not—it would still be worth watching for Ritter’s performance alone. Natacha is the perfect encapsulation of an evil witch for the millennial generation: donning blue hair and immaculate makeup, Natacha struts into each scene with some of the coolest and most refreshing witch looks this side of 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time. Girlish and pretty, Natacha’s enviable costuming and makeup informs her characterization, as the film’s antagonist can turn from bored to wrathful in the blink of a glittered eye. In a movie that features spider-like creatures with claws that try to poke characters’ eyes out, and psychedelic candy that turns our heroes into mindless gluttons, Natacha is still the scariest part.
If some of these descriptions sound familiar, that is because Nightbooks is actively engaging with some classic stories and fairy tales—interestingly, not the ones we usually categorize as horror, but that are truly horrific when you start to dwell on them. While the many foundational texts are obvious, Nightbooks uses its classic literary framework in clever ways, never leaning so far into the been-there-done-that plot points of 1,001 Arabian Nights or Hansel and Gretel to sacrifice its originality. It helps that much of the film’s uniqueness comes not from the story itself but from the excellent art direction, production design, and costuming. While Natacha may be the character who best exemplifies this rich world-building, it is integrated into the world she inhabits and controls.
I hope this film finds an audience. Kids need horror movies too. Being a kid—being a human—can be a terrifying experience. And, in the end, the edges of this cinematic experience may be enough to give some children the kind of catharsis only the horror genre can offer. After all, in movies, kids always defeat the monsters in the end.
