Forced To Believe Chapter 38- Respect
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: Morgan faces CM Punk in a one on one match. Morgan gets confused with Roman becoming distant.
Words: 5,000+
------ 'WWE Main Event'
Backstage, Jon was taping his hands while Melanie came up and kissed him on the cheek.
"So, how was fanboy land?" she teased
He chuckled. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Oh come on. I saw that adorable smile." She grinned while he finished taping up his hands. "I have to admit when you smile like that, it looks adorable."
"I know, you can't resist my good looks."
"Well, it looks like I wasn't the only one fangirling on Old School Raw."
"You were fangirling hard. I thought you were about to faint."
"I didn't fangirl a lot."
He gave her a look. "Really? Popping grapes like crazy, squealing and giggling at Piper?"
"Okay, okay, but you were smiling when you got the snake on you, so, haha."
"At least I wasn't squealing and blushing, Oh my gosh, Piper! I love you!" he said in a high voice.
"H-hey!" Melanie exclaimed as he laughed. "He is my idol. He inspired me to be the Outspoken Diva I am today. His promos are awesome. And who cares if I was blushing? I can make you blush."
"Nah, you can't. I bet I can make you blush more than Piper did to you."
"Really? I like bets, what's your challenge."
"Let's see how long we can resist each other. Let's bet that whoever can seduce the other wins. No sex, just trying to seduce the other."
"Sounds like fun."
"I'll win this bet with flying colors."
"And why are you so confident?"
Jon smirked. "Because you'll break within a week."
"Ha, we'll see about that. I accept your challenge." She shook his hand. "And whoever loses has to give the person a lap dance."
"Good. When I win, I want you in a schoolgirl outfit."
"In your dreams."
"I'm also giving you a spanking for being a bad girl."
"Ha! Keep dreaming. That fantasy of yours isn't going to become a reality." She pulled him in, about to kiss him but stopped and stepped back.
"You're such a tease."
"I know. Get used to it, Moxley."
"I'll show you, Moxley, real soon."
"Ooh, I'm so scared."
'WWE Exclusive Video'
Morgan stretched her legs and Roman walked up to her as she caught him looking at her legs.
"Can I help you?" she playfully glared and retorted at him.
Roman quickly removed his eyes from her legs and cleared his throat as she stopped stretching. He gave her her black gloves and she put them on.
"You forgot these," he said.
"Thanks. You know, you've been acting pretty weird lately. You okay? You look like you really wanna say something."
Roman started to look a little frustrated but calmed down. "...There is something that I need to get off my chest. But I'll tell you when I'm ready."
"You sure? You don't have to tell me if it really isn't any of my business."
"I know, but you should know."
"Okay." she smiled. "Whenever you're ready, you can talk to me. Anytime, I'm here for you, just like you're here for me."
"Thanks,"
'Another WWE Exclusive Video'
"I can't believe you're facing CM Punk tonight. I'll be rooting for you." Kaitlyn said as they walked backstage.
"Thanks. I'm really nervous. No more games, it's real and I need to put my words into action." Morgan said. "Ready to take down AJ?"
"Yeah, can't wait. Whoa." Kaitlyn stopped walking.
"Are you okay?" Morgan asked as she stopped walking too.
She saw Kaitlyn pointing straight ahead and they saw Rosa talking to Roman.
"That's weird." Kaitlyn looked confused. "Looks like she wrecked her brain when she dyed her hair blond. Why the heck is she talking to your teammate?"
"I have no idea..." the Outspoken Diva narrowed her eyes at Rosa.
"I would keep an eye out for Rosa."
"Yeah, I need to. I don't want Roman to get distracted. He's already on a roll and now she's getting involved. That's not cool. I'll have to talk to him about it."
"Please do. If you don't, I will. I don't like what Rosa is doing. She may be plotting something."
"I just don't want him to be caught in her evil ways. I don't want his heart broken either. He doesn't deserve that."
"You care a lot about your teammate. Growing a soft spot?" Kaitlyn nudged her.
"I care about him a lot. I just think that he's hiding something from me. We always vent to each other but now, he hasn't vented to me lately. It's like he really wants to tell me something but keeps holding it in. I could see the frustration on his face when he talked to me earlier today. I hope he's okay and nothing is wrong."
"Do you think they're dating?"
"I hope not..."
'The Shield's Hideout'
Morgan was wearing her Shield attire with a cut up shirt and black pants. She had her hair in a purple hair tie.
"Ready to serve some justice?" Seth asked and pounded his fist with hers.
"A little bit. Just nervous." She replied.
"You are going to do just fine. Trust me." Dean said. "CM Punk fails to realize that he is in for a treat. You are going to beat him and you are going to inflict a lot of punishment on him."
"He's going to regret every single smart remark he's said about you. You are going to own him tonight." Roman added.
"Thanks, guys." she smiled. "Let's do this." She put her fist out and so do they. "Believe in Morgan and Believe in The Shield." She announced as the camera zoomed in on their fists.
"Morgan is in action next! And she's going up against CM Punk!" Miz said on commentary as they go to a commercial.
'To The Gorilla'
Melanie was listening to music, trying to calm her nerves and saw Phil walking over to her. She took off her headphones and grinned at him. "Hey."
"Hey, Mel. Ready for our match?"
"A little nervous."
"You're going to do fine. I'll prepare myself for your kicks." He said and laughed with her.
"Thanks."
"No problem," he replied and they heard his theme song come on. "See you out there grapes."
She could hear the Philly fans chant 'CM Punk' loudly after he got in the ring.
Melanie exhaled. This was real. She was finally going to be in a one on one match against CM Punk. A WWE Superstar. She had a lot to prove and wanted 2014 to be the year when she faced WWE Superstars. She was glad she was able to have the privilege to do so. She wanted to bring some of the Attitude Era back and bring enjoyment to watching the women.
While she heard The Shield's theme come on, she noticed that they were going to stand at ringside to cheer her on. Moments later, The New Age Outlaws arrived at the gorilla and greeted her.
"How's the mini Chyna doin'?" Monty (Billy Gunn) grinned.
"Nervous."
"You're going to do great out there. Just like your cousin. I know she's watching and can't wait to see you shine out there." B.G James (Road Dogg) said.
"Thank you so much." she beamed.
'Oh, you didn't know? You better call somebody!'
The New Age Outlaws waved goodbye and walked out to the stage. They were going to back up Punk just in case The Shield tried anything sneaky. They did their trademark promo while Melanie got into character and started to warm up by doing some push ups.
She stood up and put on her Shield hoodie and put the hood over her head. Once her theme came on, the crowd began cheering loudly as she walked out onto the stage with a grin.
---------
"And introducing his opponent, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! She is one fourth of The Shield, Morgan Lopez!" Justin announced.
"Morgan and CM Punk. This is going to be one interesting match." Josh said on commentary.
"You bet. Punk seriously has a big disadvantage with this crowd backing up Morgan. This ain't Chicago, this is Philly. You are in Morgan's town now." Miz said as she spun around and tagged some hands.
After sliding into the ring, she got on the ropes.
"Let's go!" She yelled as she took off her hoodie and did her taunt.
She pointed to her family and Leah who were cheering her on and jumped off. She smirked at Punk once her theme faded out. The crowd chanted 'Let's Go Morgan' while Punk looked at the crowd in amazement.
"Yeah! You're in her town now! This ain't Chicago! This ain't Chicago!" Seth taunted.
'Ding Ding Ding'
"And here we go!" Miz exclaimed.
"Let's go Punk, you got this." Road Dogg cheered on.
Morgan and Punk circle around each other and she puts her hand out to Punk and he immediately shakes it.
"Looks like someone is showing respect," Josh said.
"No matter how many times Morgan has mouthed off to Punk, this is an experience she will never forget. She's honored to be in the ring with a WWE Superstar like CM Punk." Miz replied.
Punk and Morgan lock up but he pushes her down. She looks at him while he motions her to come at him. She narrows her eyes and stands up. They lock up again and this time, she trips him down as the crowd cheers. She smirks and motions him to come at her just like he did earlier.
"Little bit of mind games." Josh looked on.
"Oh~ you better believe that," Seth smirked.
"She ain't the one to be messed with, Punk," Roman stated.
"You're going down, Punk!" Dean taunted.
They lock up again and he throws her to the ropes and connects with a hip toss, turning it into an arm submission.
"Fight it." Seth supported while she winced in pain.
She manages to stand up and escape the hold. She clotheslines him 3 times and goes for a dropkick. She waits for him to get on his knees so she can give him a shining wizard. Morgan pins him for a 2 count and begins to put him in the camel clutch.
"Squeeze him harder," Roman said.
"Squeeze the life out of him," Seth added.
Punk manages to stand up and walk back to a turnbuckle, making her break the hold. He walks to the corner across from her and hits her with a running knee and a clothesline. He gets on the ropes and does the diving elbow on her.
"That's gotta hurt." Road Dogg said.
"This may be over." Josh looked on but Punk pinned her for a 2 count as the crowd cheered. "Punk thought he had her."
"She ain't going down that easy, Punk!" Rollins shouted.
Morgan manages to get up but Punk attacks her with chops and a roundhouse kick as she stumbles back. He hits her with a neckbreaker and pins her for another 2 count. Morgan rolls out the ring and Punk decides to run to try to hit her with a suicide dive but she moves out of the way.
"Whoa!" Miz exclaimed as Punk fell face first, onto the floor.
Morgan manages to take a breather as The New Age Outlaws walk over to Punk. The Shield come to her aid since they are near her and they start arguing with the New Age Outlaws.
The ref tries to calm them down as Morgan throws Punk back in the ring. She pins him for a two count. She gets on the apron and waits for him to get up so she can hit him with a diving clothesline. And when he gets up again, she runs and strikes with a swinging neckbreaker.
"Punk needs to turn things around," Josh said.
"Drop him. Keep dropping him." Seth advised.
Punk gets up and catches her kick. He pushes her back and kicks the right side of her stomach. Morgan returns a kick and they keep kicking each other until she starts hitting him with elbows to the head. Punk responds with elbows of his own until they are leaning on the ropes. The ref breaks it up while Morgan tries to go for another kick. Punk ducks it and puts her in a waist lock but she elbows him and hits him with a facebuster.
She gets on the top rope and goes for a crossbody but Punk catches her and picks her up for the GTS as the crowd gets hype.
"Come on Morgan! Fight out of it!" Dean exclaimed but Punk connected with the GTS.
"It's over. Morgan put up a good fight." Josh said but Punk pinned her for a near fall as the crowd 'Ohs'
"No way." Miz looked on in awe as Punk looked at her in shock.
The Shield was surprised but mostly relieved that she kicked out. They show Punk two fingers, saying it was a two count while the New Age Outlaws had their hands on their heads in surprise.
"No way, that was three! That had to be three." Punk exclaimed to the ref.
"It was two." The ref reiterated as the titantron showed Morgan kicking out before the three count.
"The resiliency of Morgan is really something," Miz praised.
Morgan was breathing heavily and holding her chin, starting to feel the effects of Punk's kicks and knees. She knew he was going to be a tough opponent.
Punk picks her up and throws her back to the turnbuckle and hits her with a running knee. He follows up with an elbow and pins her for a 2 count. The crowd gets hyped once Punk puts her in the Anaconda Vice.
"Uh oh! This may be over now!" Josh exclaimed.
"Morgan! Morgan! Do not tap out! Do not tap out!" Seth banged on the mat.
"Damn it Punk!" Dean yelled. "You're not going to win! You are not going to win!" He got on the apron but Roman brought him down.
"Calm down, she got this!" Roman exclaimed as Dean started pacing around, being the hothead that he was.
Seth tries to calm him down while Roman starts to look annoyed. He was not going to let Dean ruin this match for her. He needed to calm down and not get so worked up every single minute.
"Do you submit!?" The ref asked.
Morgan was desperately trying to break out of the hold. He was choking the life out of her. Luckily, she got her foot on the rope as The Shield was relieved.
Punk does the GTS taunt and waits for her to get up. Once she does, he puts her in the GTS but she counters with the Morganizer as the crowd cheers.
"Oh my gosh, she's about to beat CM Punk!" Josh shouted.
"This is over! She got it!" Miz exclaimed.
She rolls him over and pins him.
"1!"
"2!"
"No!" Morgan shouted once Punk kicked out for a near fall. "No! Why!?"
"Don't get frustrated. You got him. Stay on him." Roman supported as he watched her get upset.
She waits for Punk to get on his knees so she can give him a running knee lift. She pins him for another two count.
"Come on...give it up Punk!" Seth exclaimed.
"Make him suffer," Dean added.
Morgan decides to put him in a single leg Boston crab to try to make him tap but he escapes the hold.
Punk manages to fight back and hits Morgan with a belly to back suplex. She rolls over to the apron and stands up on the apron, near the announce table and The Shield. He was about to run through the ropes to knock her off with a shoulder thrust but she jumps up and does a split on the apron once Punk slides out of the ring and onto The Shield.
"Oh!" Miz exclaimed.
'Thank you, father, for teaching me ballet.' The Outspoken Diva thought.
She is about to turn her head but Punk gets up and grabs her by the hair to pull her down.
"Punk taking out all members of The Shield," Miz said as he threw Morgan back in the ring.
But then, Dean gets up and starts yelling at Punk at ringside and it catches his attention. He walks over to the ropes and watches Dean mouth off. Punk taunts him but then Morgan walks up to him from behind. She manages to pick him up from behind to set him up for the reverse GTS as the crowd pops loudly.
"Oh my gosh, she's picking him up!" Josh exclaimed.
"The strength of Morgan! Chyna taught her well!" The Miz praised.
Punk wasn't seriously heavy, but he wasn't that light either. She manages to do the reverse GTS on him as the crowd starts to chant 'This is Awesome.'
"That move may have taken a lot out of Morgan. I wonder if she has anything left in the tank." Miz looked on as Punk and Morgan were laid out.
The crowd starts to chant 'Let's go Morgan! CM Punk!'
The ref starts to count and Morgan manages to crawl over to Punk and pin him.
"1!"
"2!"
"Oh!" The crowd shouted once Punk kicked out.
Morgan was shocked and snapped her head to the ref.
"That was three!" She exclaimed.
"Two." The ref stated.
Morgan sighs loudly and rolls away from Punk to recover.
"I thought she had him there. What the heck does Morgan have to do to win?" Josh asked.
"They both are tough competitors," Miz replied.
Morgan sits up and sighs but Punk grabs her from behind, for the Anaconda Vise as the crowd gets hyped and she screamed "Crap!"
"Looks like Punk was playing possum," Josh looked on.
The Shield start to panic but Morgan manages to hit him in the back of the head with her knee to make him release the hold. She picks up Punk and tries to do the bulldog on him but he pushes her off and hits her with a step up enzuigiri. Morgan falls out of the ring and near The Shield. Dean quickly goes to check on her but once Punk gets out of the ring, The Shield begin to step up to him.
The crowd cheers once the New Age Outlaws come to his aid. Punk and the New Age Outlaws start arguing with The Shield and don't notice Morgan getting in the ring and onto the top rope.
"No way!" Josh chuckled while she dove on top of everyone.
"Let's friggin' go!" She yelled, taunting the crowd as they gave her a huge pop.
She manages to get Punk in the ring. He manages to kick her in the stomach and run to the ropes but Morgan follows him and hits him with a knee to the stomach, taking a page out of Ambrose's book. She holds her stomach and grabs him to position him for the backfire. She does a loud battle cry and hits the move.
"Will this be it!?" Miz exclaimed.
"1!"
"2!"
"Come on!" Morgan yelled as Punk kicked out again.
Punk manages to lean on the turnbuckle as she gives him a handspring back elbow. Punk quickly grabs her from behind and puts her in the GTS position as he walks to the middle of the ring. Morgan escapes it and hits him with a bicycle superkick as Punk slowly falls down the mat. She pins him for another near fall as she bangs on the mat in frustation.
"Don't let the anger control you," Seth warned.
She turns to The Shield and they give her words of encouragement.
As they both recover, Punk kicks her in the stomach as she bends forward. He kicks her on the shoulder as she stumbles back and gets hit with a roundhouse kick. Morgan slowly falls down the mat. Punk goes high risk again and aims for the elbow but she moves out of the way.
"Will this be a turning point in the mat?" Josh asked. She pulls Punk to the middle rope and gets on the apron. She runs and gives him a knee to the face as the crowd 'Ohs' at the impact. "Painful knee by Morgan."
She gets back in the ring and waits for Punk to get on his knees. Once he does, she tries to kick him in the face but he ducks and quickly stands up and picks her up for the GTS. She escapes it and puts him in the Morganizer position until he escapes it and puts her back in the GTS hold. She escapes it again and delivers the backfire on him as the crowd cheers.
"Yes!" Seth yelled and high fived Dean and Roman.
She pins him but for another near fall.
"No!" Morgan screamed.
"Damn it!" Dean banged on the mat.
The Shield was getting frustrated for her.
"Come on Punk! You can do it!" Billy cheered.
"Shut your mouth, old man!" Seth yelled.
Morgan waits for Punk to get up from behind and catches him in a sleeper hold.
"Paying tribute to Hot Rod," Miz praised. Punk breaks out of it and throws her to the ropes. She held onto the ropes while he went for a dropkick. "Looks like Morgan knows all his tricks."
She runs and gives him a hurricanrana. Then, she jumps on the ropes and gives him a crossbody. She pins him for a one count and puts him in the breakdown as the crowd cheers. She starts to lean back more as Punk yells out in pain.
"Give up already!" Morgan yelled.
All of a sudden, Punk escapes the hold and puts her back in the Anaconda Vice.
"Oh no! She's caught!" Miz exclaimed.
Moments later, Morgan is about to tap but loses consciousness when Punk puts too much pressure on her head. The ref checks her and rings for the bell to be rung as the crowd cheers for Punk.
"Here is your winner! CM Punk!" Justin announced.
The Shield weren't disappointed that she lost. They were proud of her and her efforts.
Punk got his hand raised as he held his stomach, still feeling the impact of Morgan's kicks. The New Age Outlaws get in the ring to celebrate with him. Morgan manages to regain consciousness and sighs.
She started to look upset and ran her hands through her hair while she was disappointed in herself.
"I failed..." She looked down in disappointment.
Punk stopped celebrating and turned his attention to her while his music went off. The crowd applauded for them both, praising their match. While Morgan was looking down, she saw feet in front of her.
"Hey." He stood before her and she slowly looked up at him.
Punk had his hand out and she decided to grab it. He helped her up as the crowd continued to give them a loud reception. They chant 'This was Awesome'
Morgan held her stomach since she was still feeling the effects of Punk's moves. Punk whispers something in her ear for a few moments and after he is done, he steps away from her. Morgan smiles and nods to him while he smirks and gets out of the ring with the New Age Outlaws.
The Shield gets in the ring while Morgan mouths 'Thank you' to Punk and he mouths 'You're welcome.' while her theme comes on.
"Even though Morgan lost, you got to give her credit for the performance she's done. This is a match she will never forget." Miz praised.

'WWE Exclusive Video'
"Morgan, may I have a word?" Renee walked over to her while she was chatting with Kaitlyn.
"What's up?" She grinned.
"I wanted to get your thoughts on your match against CM Punk. You came up short but you showed a lot of girl power out there. How are you feeling?"
"I feel like I won. I feel like a winner. Win or lose, CM Punk took the time to get in the ring with me and we had one hell of a match. I'm proud of it. I may not like him but I respect him and I'm grateful that he wanted to wrestle me."
"She kicked butt out there." Kaitlyn praised.
"He got me a couple of times, I mean, Punk can hurt anything. I may have kicked out of the GTS but I couldn't handle the submissions. I'm disappointed in that but I'll just have to work on that a little more." Morgan continued.
"After the match, you took his hand as he helped you up. We saw him whisper in your ear, what did he say?" Renee asked.
Morgan chuckled, "He told me...he never met a woman who wanted to stand out so much from the other WWE Divas. He told me I earned his respect and wants to wrestle me again."
"Ooh, so Punk and Morgan aren't over?"
"Nah. Not by a long shot. I want closure. I'm going to beat him one day. He got lucky and outsmarted me tonight. Next time when we get in the ring, I'm going to make sure to try harder. He's an awesome competitor."

'In The Ring'
Kaitlyn was in the ring with AJ while Tamina was at ringside. AJ seems to be taking control, and Morgan walks out to support Kaitlyn as the crowd cheers.
"Here comes Morgan, again," Miz said.
"Come on Kaitlyn!" She supported at ringside.
"I'm surprised that she's out here. She lost to CM Punk earlier." Josh looked on.
AJ gets hit with a backbreaker by Kaitlyn as the crowd cheers. She elbows AJ down and starts to build momentum by giving her clotheslines. She pins her for a two count and throws her to the ropes. AJ kicks her on the shoulder but runs into the gut buster.
"Awesome!" Morgan cheered. Kaitlyn pins her for a two count. "So close."
Kaitlyn tries to pick her up but AJ catches her in a submission.
"AJ has locked that submission in deep." Josh said.
Kaitlyn manages to power out by throwing her to the turnbuckle. AJ gets on the middle rope and goes for a crossbody but Kaitlyn catches her. She tries to go for the gutbuster but AJ counters with a roll up and wins.
AJ starts skipping around Kaitlyn and she stands up. Suddenly AJ jumps and grins at her before giving her a hug as the crowd cheers.
"What the heck?" Josh asked
"I was thinking the same thing," Miz said in confusion. AJ got off of her and fixed herself while Tamina got in the ring. Once Kaitlyn turned around, she gets kicked by Tamina as the crowd boos. "Oh!"
Morgan quickly gets in the ring but AJ and Tamina escape.
"Really? Really Tamina?" She retorted as she helped Kaitlyn.
AJ grins and leaves with Tamina while Kaitlyn sits up and holds her head while she helps her.
"You okay?" Morgan asked.
"I fall for it every time..." Kaitlyn sighed. "Do me a favor. Kick Tamina's ass for me and win the divas championship for me, the next time you win it."
After she stood up, they both embraced as the crowd cheered.
'Backstage'
Melanie and April give each other sad smiles when they see Celeste zipping up her bag.
Celeste sighed. "Goodbyes are too hard..."
"Yeah, they really are," Melanie replied.
"You two better stay and kick some serious butt. And Melanie, I hope you continue proving yourself by wrestling more superstars."
"I will, hopefully."
Celeste showed a sad smile and had her arms out while Melanie quickly went to hug her and began crying. "Haha, don't cry Melly. We'll see each other soon."
"I'm such a baby. I'm sorry. I'm just going to miss you and you attacking me with pillows all the time."
Celeste started to have tears in her eyes and released her. "You're gonna ruin my makeup. Tomorrow is going to be the first day of my new life. There's so much to look forward to."
Melanie nodded and wiped the tears from her eyes. "I can't wait for Celestial Bodiez to debut. I'll be checking that out."
"You better." Celeste playfully glared at her.
"She's leaving!" Ettore (Big E) playfully sobbed and showed a sad face before hugging her.

'Next Day, in Philly At The Fearless Athletics Cross Fit South Philadelphia Gym'
"Hey! There you are! What took you so long, weenie?" Leah dragged Melanie into the gym.
"I was hanging with my family." Melanie chuckled. "And I am not a weenie, you're the meanie."
"Beanie."
"Tortellini."
"Darn you. Ready for the Smackdown taping?"
"Yep, I can't wait to perform in front of my hometown again."
"I heard about Celeste, you okay?"
"I'm happy for her. I just miss her."
"Aye, you still got me, and the other divas."
"True."
"So how's the bet with Jon going? Anyone make a move yet?"
"I'm going to. I just need to find him."
"He's over there, lifting weights. It's pretty dead here, so it's not hard to find him. Plus, his crazy, curly hair is easy to spot these days."
Melanie giggled and took off her sweat jacket, leaving her in gray sweatpants and a black sports bra. "I will be right back."
Leah chuckled while The Philly Diva started walking over to Jon. He was lying down, lifting weights, while he was shirtless and wearing shorts.
She decided to straddle him, which quickly distracted him and made him groan.
"Hey. You don't mind if I sit here, do you?" she greeted
"Not at all." he managed to say.
"Great, you're comfortable. You look really tense. I could change that if you just give in." She smirked and put her hands on his chest. She heard him grunt when she moved forward a bit. "So? Are you going to give in?"
Amused, he smirked. "You're not going to win this bet this easily. You just caught me off guard a little bit."
"Suit yourself." She got off him. "I'm going to let you off easy, this time."
He stood up. "You seem really confident. That's going to come back to haunt you."
"Sure..." Melanie grinned. "That's just a preview of what I'm going to do to you."
He leaned forward to whisper in her ear, "You know Mel...I know all your weak spots. I'm going to make you so hot and bothered, you're going to beg." He moved away and slapped her ass before walking away.
"Really?" She rubbed her behind.
Leah laughed at the show. "That was good."
'Smackdown'
Morgan was stretching backstage while bending down. She saw boots in front of her and stood up, letting out an annoyed sigh.
"Hello, Morgan." Rosa grinned.
"What the hell do you want...?" She retorted.
"Oh Morgan, you're so moody." she giggled.
"What do you want, Rosa...?"
"Oh nothing, just listening to Roman vent. We've been talking lately. He said some interesting stuff about you."
"First of all, how about you mind your business and stay away from my teammate."
"I can't. He is my business. He's been venting to me."
"Why do you always lie? Why would Roman want to talk to you? Besides he always goes to me to vent."
"Not anymore chica. You lost that title. And soon, you're going to lose the title of being The Shield's Girl."
"This is getting old. I'm tired of you divas thinking you can take my spot. It's not going to happen."
"Morgan, you walk around, thinking you're top diva, well listen up because I'm about to take you down and watch you crumble and fall in despair. It's going to be very entertaining. I can't wait for the next few weeks."
"Listen to me." She sternly said and stepped up to her. "Stay away from my teammate. I know what you're trying to do. You want to gain your spotlight so you can be a part of The Shield. That's not going to happen. Back off of Roman or there are going to be some problems."
"Have a good evening, Morgan," she smirked and strutted away.
'Later'
Morgan found Roman at The Shield's Hideout, sitting on a crate and walked up to him.
"Hey." She smiled.
"Hey. What's up?"
"Can you be honest with me?"
"Always." Roman ran his right hand through her hair.
"Is there something going on between you and Rosa?" She asked and he removed his hand.
"Huh?" He looked confused.
"I saw you two back at Main Event. And she said that you vented to her. I'm a little confused as to why. I thought I was the one you vented to. Did I do something wrong?" She asked while he sighed. "Look, I don't care who you want to talk to but I just care about you and really don't think she's the one to talk to. She's manipulative and I don't want to see you hurt."
"I'm already hurt..."
"What did she do?"
"She didn't do anything."
"Then who did? Who hurt you?"
"...You did." He stood up.
"What? How did I hurt you?"
"Can we discuss this later?"
"No. How did I hurt you?" She repeated.
"It's nothing."
She was about to ask him another question but stopped.
"I just-I want you to be careful." She gave him a worried look as he started to hold her hands. "I don't want you to get distracted and be under Rosa's manipulative ways. You're on a roll. Don't crash and burn because of her. Please. As a friend, please be careful."
"Yeah. Friends..."
"And we have each other's backs. I'm going to be here for you. Please don't forget what I said about Rosa. Be careful."
"I will,"
"Good. I'll see you," she kissed his cheek and walked away.

~~~~~~
"You..!"
A deep, threatening and rough voice bounced against the walls of the passages.
Not much further ahead was a woman, pushing a man of what looked like a high status to the side. She was running like a madwoman, fleeing from what people would think; the devil.
That woman is you. Yes you; surprising, isn't it?
What did you do to get yourself ending up in this peculiar predicament, you probably wonder?
Well then, no need to look further nor to scroll down to nitpick every sentence in this story to make even the slightest sense of what's going on in this world of chaos. It shall all be explained right here and now!
If you didn't care nor wonder what, how, and why this all happened, then too bad! You have no power over this story! Haha, take that!
Ahem, anyway...It all happened at a feast around midnight before all this chaos came to be.
*(*)*(*)*
Fili and Kili dragged you with them. The blonde prince led the way as the younger brother pulled you with them.
They had been spouting stuff about "the greatest idea ever." and "going in the history books for being the legendary mischief-makers." Or something like that. You didn't really listen, like at all, only perking up and paying a biiit more attention when they mentioned 'you' and 'food.'
Were you getting an all-you-can-eat-buffet?
Aww, such sweethearts! They shouldn't have.
Weelll, you did deserve it, after all. Going along on this journey and defeating a dragon is not an easy feat. They should make you an entire statue while they're at it!
Yes, one right next to the entrance so all visitors and passers-by could see you and know of your magnificent and heroic deeds.
You mentally patted yourself on the back. The look on your face was a mix of smugness and pride.
But you were forgetting one small itty bitty detail (or two) in your only sliiightly intoxicated state:
You weren't the sole hero who slew the dragon. You already got your fair share of the reward: a high status in the kingdom - a place in the High Court of the company who went on that dragon-slaying quest - and a luxurious comfy home included. And not to forget the gold you were promised. Thorin also offered work in a high place in the kingdom like a royal scholar or something, but you gracefully declined. You liked working in the toy shop with Bofur and Bifur - so...no statue for you.
But you didn't remember that.
You snapped out of your daydreams when Fili softly helped you to sit down on your bed.
How did you get here in the first place?
"Are you alright Y/N?"
Fili or Kili, you don't know which one as they looked the same to you at the moment, wiggling in front of you with their two clones.
When did they become a quadruplet?
"Y/N?"
Oh yeah, you still needed to answer them.
"...'M fiiinee."
You managed to slur out with difficulty, sleepiness slowly taking over. The brain cells were already going to bed, leaving behind a heavily drunken brain to operate the whole system.
What could go wrong, am I right?
...A lot.
*(*)*(*)*
"Ugh, stupid hangover..."
You moaned, resting your chin on the edge of the bucket pathetically.
You felt like you died and came back to life again, moaning over a bucket you desperately tried not to look into, for you knew the meal you had yesterday would not be a pretty sight.
At least you could tell what was up and down...yay for you...
You didn’t forget that you had somehow convinced Fili and Kili you were really fine and totally not wasted. How was beyond you, and you were not in the mood to figure it out.
Maybe they were also drunk or just took advantage of your pickled state. Yeah, they would do that to guilt-trip you into going along with their prank. They knew you never break a promise, even if you made it in your totally half-sober state. They were too cunning for their own and others’ - mostly others’ - good.
Anyway, somehow (not surprisingly) without knowing what you were getting into, you had nodded along with everything they had said.
You vaguely remember Kili or Fili tucking you in and saying goodnight.
Note to self: Never try to win against Bofur - or any dwarf for that matter - in a drinking match ever again.
You chastised yourself while staggering towards your wardrobe.  How late would Fili or Kili pick you up to set his prank in motion? You didn’t even care which one it was - you hated them both at the moment...Okay, who are you kidding; you would do the same thing again in a heartbeat for either of them. And of course, they would give poor little you the hardest and most dangerous job to fulfil... Great. Just peachy.
Sigh.
Let's get this whole shenanigan over with, dammit. They’d better sing tales and praises about you once this is over.
Not long after you put some clothes on, The two brothers barged into your chamber, loud and boisterous as ever. How they both could be so lively in the morning (with probably a hangover too) was beyond you.
"...Stupid dwarf genes..."
You mumbled to yourself as you let the two princes drag you to the training hall with their arms hooked around yours on either side.
You felt dread pool inside your stomach as you got closer to the training hall.
Now, normally you loved the training hall. After all, it was the front row seat to a heavenly sight of young warriors and their amazing muscles being put to use in a workout. Not to forget there was one dwarf in particular who you just loved to watch while he flexed his muscles by throwing other dwarves around.
But right now, you feared it with a burning passion, for that place was undoubtedly the place where you would meet your inevitable doom.
"Don't worry dear Y/N, it's gonna be fun!"
Kili spoke up happily, seeming to notice your unease Oh, how you would love to give him the big finger. But knowing Kili, he would drop you for the fun of it and make a whole drama show out of it, gasping and acting like a stereotypical blonde rich girl, one who just overheard the most scandalous gossip about herself. You cursed yourself for showing Kili how to be a true drama queen. (Prince, in his case, but you get the point.) The traitor uses all those tricks against you every chance he gets. You could just kick yourself for being so stupid to show him the ropes. What's worse is that if you would put Kili in a dress he would be the definition of a diva! How he does it?
No one knows!
Why couldn't you just say no and walk away?
"Because you're too nice to leave your favourite dwarves hanging, Y/N. You promised you would help." Kili said. Technically, your autopilot did, not you. Unfortunately for you, Kili was right. You wouldn't leave him hanging.
You glared at Kili and the stupid cheeky grin he gave you. You would have rolled your eyes at him if that wouldn't hurt as much as it did, so you decided to roll your eyes mentally instead.
Wait...did you just say that out loud?
"Yes, yes you did."
"Fu-"
*(*)*(*)*
After what seemed like ages Fili and Kili had finally managed to drag your miserable self to the big wooden doors of the training hall. You had given up the struggle after the longest ten minutes of your life, deciding to formulate a master escape plan before you would reach the training halls. Unfortunately for you, it was too late. You threw your carefully thought-out plan down the drain when Kili accidentally slammed the door against the wall too loud when he kicked it open with his boot.
Still having his arm looped around your's, mind you.
Everyone and everything quieted down for just a moment. Heads turned towards the entrance where they were all, no doubt about it, greeted with a comical sight.
Fili and Kili, obnoxious as always and wicked smiles on their faces (and everyone who even remotely knew the young princes, grasped that the two were up to no good.)
dragged a very anxious looking you with them. One would guess you were about to be sacrificed as a dragon's dinner.  Which you were, in your opinion.
"Come on Y/N,  time to teach you how to disarm opponents," Fili said, leading the way to a part of the area where a couple of young dwarves were thrown on the ground by one dwarf in particular, one you came to recognise as the hottest and grumpiest dwarf in all of Grump Town. And oh boy, you were not ready to get destroyed by him, and you showed it, too, pulling and protesting and cursing at everything that lived.
How you wished you could tell people that you managed to free yourself from the boy's grasp and run for the hills.
Sadly, that wish didn't come true; God hated you or something, for Fili and Kili  - those little rascals - managed to push you right into Dwalin.
You didn't know if Dwalin catching you was a blessing or a curse. What you did know, however, was that you most definitely were blushing, if your burning cheeks were anything to go off of.
Dwalin was shirtless... His strong, hairy arms encircled your waist delicately, and you were practically pressed against his chest...
Against his strong, warm and bushy dwarven chest.
The scent of sweat, smoke and a vague hint of cookie dough entered your nose, and it strangely made you feel at home.
You were a goner, yep completely gone, nobody's home. Come back later or leave a message after the beep for Y/N dot exe has stopped working and took a vacation to cloud nine.
Sadly, your cloud nine had been sucked away too quickly by the dwarf himself who put you there in the first place.
Dwalin, being the grump that he is, grunted at you and pushed you back on your feet as if you had burned him!
"Rude much," you grumbled once you managed to keep your balance, dusting yourself off.
Dwalin (the ass) only grunted in return. Him and his damn grunts.
You ain't special enough for him to form a full sentence for you, now?
Fine, if he was gonna play it that way then, you were gonna give it to him back tenfold.
Screw consequences, the dick deserved this. You were gonna go all out.
You turned around and stuck your tongue out like a real child woman.
Fili and Kili started to giggle behind you, getting quiet real quick when they saw Dwalin glaring daggers at them.
You marched towards the two princes, whispering four words as you moved past them.
"Let's do this shit."
The boys definitely heard you, for their grins turned wicked.
One glance and you knew what was about to come. If being the two princes’ guinea pig for pranks with poor Bilbo the entire journey taught you anything, it would be to recognize the twinkle in their eyes.
It spoke in volumes louder than any dragon could roar; chaos was about to unfold, both in their brains (as they looked each other in the eye) and soon, in reality. You looked slightly over your shoulder.
Yeah, they were scheming alright, communicating with that brotherly bond they share or something.
Watch out Dwalin:
This. Is. War.
*(*)*(*)*
ShitshitshitshitSHIT!
Oh, how you came to regret tripping Dwalin up. In your defence, it wasn't your fault that he couldn't take his dark eyes off of you when you pulled your shirt off because the heat was getting too hot to handle.
Wink wonk.
Hey, at least you wore a white undershirt. One which clung to your breasts tightly. Yeah, that'll give him something to look at.
Anyway!
It wasn't your fault, either, when Dwalin marched towards you with purpose in his steps when you bent over to grab a dagger off the ground, showing him your assets in the process.
It was his fault, really! He should've noticed that Fili and Kili were waiting for him to stand on the grey X. And now you were running for your life with a very, very angry dwarf (who was covered in white glue and colourful feathers) on your heels. Thanks for everything, Kili. Thanks for shrieking out, "Y/N planned it!" The moment Dwalin glared at them...
The snitch.
You pushed dwarves to the side as you ran for your life, screaming sorry as you went, because you are a polite gentlelady. Dwarves watched you go with wide eyes, confused as heck as Dwalin stormed past them not long after.
Most of the time, you were glad they made the hallways mainly one straight line, but now? You cursed its existence and its creator.
There was unquestionably no doubt about it that Dwalin would catch up. Curse you and your hate of exercise.
You should have taken Gloin's offer of jogging with him when you had the chance, but Bombur's pastries were too tempting to pass up on at the time.
And now here you were, fleeing like the devil was behind you, with burning lungs and protesting legs. You were afraid to glance back; you could almost feel your pursuer’s breath go down your neck. You silently prayed to all the deities above and beneath you to help you out, and it seemed one took pity on your little mortal soul. For the moment you finished your prayer, you were rewarded with two things: two dwarves carrying barrels, and a small corridor you almost missed if it hadn't been for someone came out of said corridor.
You took the opportunity without hesitation and slammed against the two unexpecting dwarves, who dropped the barrels in surprise. You managed to slip past them before the barrels hit the ground - like freaking Indiana Jones - skidding through the corridor with a sharp turn.
Without a second wasted, you pressed yourself against the wall like a ninja on a mission and held your breath. This was the moment of truth. There were two possibilities: either Dwalin wasn't fooled by the stunt, or he runs right by you. You prayed for the latter.
Lo and behold, for your prayers have been answered again! The deities really loved you at this moment, or just had lots of pity for you.
Dwalin ran past the corridor.
You let out the biggest sigh of relief in your life Patting yourself on the back, you turned around with a smile... Only to come face to face with the king of the mountain. The smug-ass had a knowing smirk on his face.
Shitpopcicles...
"Why are you so out of breath Y/N? You look as if a warg was on your heels." the smirk faltered as Thorin rubbed at his chin as if he were thinking.
The grin returned tenfold. "Is a certain dwarf chasing you, perhaps...?" His voice was teasing; he dang well knew why.
Oh, how you wished you could smack that smirk off his face, but sadly that was not a good idea. The bugger knows about your crush on Dwalin and teases you often.
He found out about it during the journey and he had always put you and Dwalin on watch together.
He shipped it, you just knew he did.
You pointed a threatening finger towards him. "Watch out, boy." You were close enough to Thorin to be the only one allowed to do something like this.
"Or this little lady won't hesitate to tell the whole damn mountain and a certain someone that you have a crush on a certain hobbit."
His face stayed the same - stoic and not moving - but you saw it at his softly reddening cheeks that your suspicions had been right. You grinned victoriously at Thorin, who stood there without uttering a word. Serves him right! Now you had blackmail. Internally, you were cackling evilly.
Your body froze while Thorin opened his mouth to speak. You felt as if Hell had just frozen over for that's when you heard it:
"You...!"
It sounded like thunder rumbling. Deep, rough and threatening. You would have totally been turned on if you weren't scared for your life.
Dwarfzilla was coming...
Without noticing it, you pushed Thorin to the side and ran like a madwoman. This is how it all happened. Now you're all caught up, so let's continue.
Fili and Kili had better sing tales about you after this.
You turned many corners and hallways, zooming past Dwarves who flushed themselves against the narrow walls in haste as you ran past them.
Some of them called out to you, but you couldn't hear what they said; Being chased doesn't really give you the time to stop and listen to what they had to say, now does it?
At one point, you began to notice the path becoming disproportionate and rough. Stones stuck out of the floor and walls. You tripped over a couple of those, those little buggers. Soon, it was as if you weren't in a hallway anymore, but in a cave instead.
Dwalin had been calling out to you after a while of running through the cave-like hallway. But the thing was, he didn't sound angry anymore.
He sounded worried, desperate even, which was very much out of character for Dwalin, to be honest...
Sadly, you hadn't had the time to realize why Dwalin acted the way he did before you dropped down a hole in the floor with a yelp. At least you found out why he was so concerned.
What a great day...
*(*)*(*)*
A short cry reverberated throughout the chamber, and a high pitched voice followed after.
"Could you be more gentle!?"
You glared at Dwalin, who like always, grunted his replies instead of talking like a normal Dwarf-being!
Though he did what you asked and rubbed the ointment on your bruises more gently, which felt like heaven on your sore skin...
You felt absolutely stupid, sitting on a wooden bench with Dwalin treating your bruises and wounds. (Oin was too busy to do it himself so he shoved ointment in Dwalin's hand. The other was holding you at that moment, for Dwalin wouldn't allow you to walk yourself. Oin said that Dwalin should do it before promptly leaving.) Dwalin had to pull you out of the hole, though he spoke more words than he had said to you this entire day. You counted that as a victory.
You still felt your heart flutter every time you thought about it: He had been extremely gentle, lifting you out of the hole with both his arms. Cradling you to his chest while muttering in dwarvish. Checking all over your body before caressing the back of your head and pressing it against his shoulder as he held you close. This time, you understood his mumbles: "Thank Mahal, yer safe," his voice was so quiet, wavering with raw emotion;
"never do anything like that ever again, ya hear me."
Dwalin was still shirtless and covered in glue and feathers during the entire ordeal.
Your heart had skipped multiple beats right then and there, cheeks flushed red. You had been trying to process those words the entire way to Oin. Still trying to figure out the meaning behind the words he uttered with such intensity.
You were brought out of your trance by Dwalin tapping on your shoulder, you looked over to see him staring at you, "Lift yer left foot."
You did as he asked, lifting your foot. Dwalin grasped it gently in one hand as he removed the boot delicately. If this was in a different situation, it would have been very intimate. No, wait, scratch that; it's intimate even now, which was not good for your heart, which was doing summersaults inside your chest. Yep, you were screwed...
So badly, and heavenly screwed.
Yet you couldn't find it in yourself to really mind.
Once Dwalin removed the boot and sock, he started to massage your foot with ointment, muttering to himself. "Why did ya let yerself be dragged in the princes' pranks."
It wasn't a question, but you answered anyway, "Those princes made me promise to help them out when I was drunk- don't look at me like that Dwalin! You know I never break promises, even if I made them while I was drunk."
He averted his eyes, stilling his ministrations slightly. "Ya need to learn to say no."
His voice was almost too soft to hear, but you did.
You huffed in return, "I'm getting better at it though! I said no to Fleder-Fledder something when he tried to get me to marry him!"
Dwalin chuckled, "Aye ya did. Ya kicked him good in the nuts."
"Well, he deserved it, I didn't even know him and wouldn't take no for an answer, so I had to make it clear."
You grinned at Dwalin as he shook his head, a smirk on his face.
Your eyes turned soft, remembering how Dwalin had positioned himself between the man and you when the man tried to grab you by the neck. Your hero had glared at the man fiercely, threatening to gut him with his axe if he didn't take the hint and shove off.
The man had pissed himself before he had sprinted off, too scared to utter a single word.
You had hugged Dwalin to thank him and since then, he only acknowledged you with grunts... That was the day before the feast.
Balin had said not to take it personally, that Dwalin needed time to sort himself out. But damn was it hard to not take it to heart.
"Why did you do it?"
The dam broke, spilling your most inner thoughts. Fumbling with your fingers, you stared at the ground, missing the confused look on Dwalin's face. "What?"
"Why did you ignore me after I hugged you?"
You were not gonna beat around the bush with this one. You made your bed, and now you need to lie in it.
"You didn't acknowledge me for three days. Balin said to give you space, so I did. But damnit Dwalin, you ignored me for three days! Why?"
You didn't mean for your voice to crack when you looked him in the eyes. You didn't mean for the tear to slip past. Dwalin's eyes widened in return. Very slightly, but you noticed. He averted his gaze to the ground for a second, placing your foot down gently and then looked up into your eyes.
"I...I got confused," he began, eyes full with emotions, some you couldn't even place. "I got confused...Emotions which I thought I had buried deep down, long ago resurfaced..." you blinked. Were his eyes getting glassy?
"They resurfaced tenfold. I didn't know what to do or think… I didn't think," he grabbed your hand in his delicately, tracing the skin with his thumb, never taking his eyes off you even once. "I threw up my walls in a panic, I shouldn't have, but I did..." he took in a deep breath. "Hurting those dear to me." Dwalin pressed his lips against your hand, it was gentle and soft. Butterflies fluttered inside your stomach.
"Y/N, lass, I truly regret putting ya through such pain. Could you forgive this fool of a dwarf?" He whispered, staring at you with pleading eyes.
You did what everyone would do in this situation.
You hit him on the head and yelled, "you idiot!!" and slapped against his chest multiple times. "I thought you hated me...!" Dwalin grabbed you by the waist and raised you into the air without much problem. He stared into your eyes with passion as he uttered one word.
"Never."
The two of you were only a small length apart. Without hesitating, you closed the distance, pressing your lips against his. He passionately returned the kiss, both of you closing your eyes as you relished the feeling of each other.
Yeah, you were on cloud nine alright. The touch of Dwalin's hands holding you so gently set your skin aflame. You could get used to this.
Parting to gasp for air, you glanced at Dwalin's face. Eyes lidded, and mouth slightly open. You smirked then, leaning in, you brushed your lips lightly against his.
He groaned in return.
"Yer doing things to me, lass," he pressed his head against yours, his eyes soft as he looked at you. "Be mine?"
You only nodded, leaning in for another kiss to seal the promise.
Yeah, today was a great day...
#Noctislistening - Mimi Edition (7 of 12)
#noctislistening digidestined series for more, or click here for the master post!
Brought to you by @earlgreymon‘s Digidestined FM and @tangledupblue‘s Digidestined-inspired playlists. Listen!! Go, go, go!!
I’m giving myself more of a breather on busy work this week due to Thanksgiving coming up. What better way to break into singing and dancing with our girl Mimi?
Last time, we mellowed out with Iori (#6). Next time, we have our spirits lifted with Takeru! (#8)
Tumblr media
It’s Mimi’s turn now - get excited!!
Digidestined FM (Mimi version) @earlgreymon
“Style” by Taylor Swift? Yesss.
youtube
I also listened to “Out of the Woods” since that’s one of my favs off of 1989. Actually, I love that whole album - it was one of the albums that got me through, let’s just say a time period that ended with “Blank Space” and “Clean”. ;) Also one of my dearest friends burned a CD of that album for me and I had that album on loop for months on end.
I could totally see Mimi listen to these “powerhouse divas” and it makes sense to me being the one so quick to grab a microphone in the Digital World and charming her admirers with her sweet voice. I also love the Takeru “Lover” duet headcanon. :D
I like the ones listed here, but I am more partial to the 90′s divas. Mariah Carey was actually an idol of mine growing up. The Daydream album was my most favorite in my early teens and I thought “One Sweet Day” was the best song ever because Boyz II Men was another one of my favorites. But I’m going to show you the “Always Be My Baby” video just because:
youtube
My favorite from Celine Dion is probably “That’s The Way It Is” but she also has some amazing huge songs. I mentioned No Doubt in Miyako’s playlist, but I am more familiar with Gwen Stefani’s music with them than with her solo stuff. But I still think she is cool, and so are we (hehe).
I’d really like to give Carly Rae Jepson more of a listen since I only know two songs from her (I’m pretty sure I said the same thing about Owl City, who was mentioned along with her in Taichi’s post lol). One of them being “Call Me Maybe” (which is in Sam’s playlist, too!)
And Ariana Grande. I don’t have a particular favorite song but I have respect for her amazing vocal talent.
Ah, and Katy Perry! I wonder if I already mentioned her in an earlier post? “Thinking of You” is a classic and I enjoyed all of the ‘Teenage Dream’ album.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Peomimi @tangledupblue
When I first listened to this playlist, after the first song played (Taylor Swift’s “Welcome To New York”), I paused while I listened to the whole 1989 album. I love that album so damn much.
Mimi is just FUN. She is sassy and flirtatious but she knows who she is and she’s there for her friends. Don’t start any trouble with her or her girls, because she will not take that. (”Even if I’m loud, doesn’t mean I’m talking to you” xP) I also think from this playlist she can be someone to give into lust, infatuation, and maybe even love. But if her heart breaks, she’ll totally feel it, and once she’s over it the whole situation will be like a speck of dirt on her shoulder and she just has to flick it off.
I had a lot of fun listening to this playlist. I like the Ariana Grande song in this one. Mostly songs I could picture in a club or get you ready for a night out (Camila Cabello, Iggy Azalea, Selena Gomez to name a few) but there are some throwbacks like Gwen Stefani ft. Eve and Hilary and Hailey Duff. I also liked the song from Paloma Faith and yet another good tune from Betty Who. And I can’t not mention “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” because I mentioned it in Miyako’s playlist, but here, Miley Cyrus’s version fits Mimi. :)
It was hard to choose six but here we go:
Hailee Steinfeld - Most Girls // I love how empowering this is :)
Fifth Harmony - That’s My Girl // I’m glad there was this group and Little Mix around. I can’t think of any others that I liked before them, other than maybe Dream and B*Witched (I’m probably forgetting some others.. and I’m also probably showing my age lol).
youtube
~*~*~*~*~*~
Little Mix - Hair // I’m kind of obsessed with this song. I dunno if it’s because of my own long and growing hair, and during the rare occasions I went out with friends (a while ago, and I mean rare. Just need a Mimi- or Miyako- type friend to convince me to go) there were definitely some “get him out of my hair” situations lol. Here is where Mimi can do a dramatic flip and walk away to her friends because she’s not here for the hassle.
Dua Lipa - Blow Your Mind (Mwah) // I am liking her the more I listen to her. Side note - I happened to be watching the Grammy Nominations and saw that she was nominated. Yay!!
Janelle Monae ft Grimes - Pynk // Janelle is a QUEEN. All her songs are amazing and I love what she stands for. I was so lucky to see her live one year. This song is no exception
youtube
Troye Sivan - Bloom // I didn’t get a chance to talk about him in Iori’s post but I liked his song there and I loved the lyrics to the song here too. And omg I just realized, Bloom = Like Palmon! :) <3
~*~*~*~*~*~
Whatcha think? Karaoke time??? What are your favorites from Mimi’s playlists to sing to? Dance to? Or both?!
Hollyweird: The Tales of Tops, Bottoms, & Beards
Premise: What happens when Angel finds out about King Jade’s escapades outside The Kompound. Based off the following photos:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: This story is 100% fictitious and the results of what happens when I’m allowed to write/post whatever I want without restrictions. It’s meant to be comical. Just gotta put that out there for anyone that stans any of the celebs mentioned.
**************************
“Biiiiiiiiiiitch,” Angel’s thick Creole accent called through Charlie’s iPhone. She was between takes on her latest film and had just been given the juiciest tea that she’d ever heard. I’m talking boiling hot. And when she learned that it involved one of her sister wives, she had to FaceTime and get the firsthand account of the details.
“So you out here pegging actors?” The question caused Henny and Charlie to choke on their water.
“Excusez-moi?” Henny exclaimed as she tried to compose herself from the coughing fit.
“The fuck you talking about, Angel?” Erik’s deep voice could be heard from the other end of the phone. He’d decided to surprise both Hennessy and Charlie with a lunch date to their favorite ramen shop as a means of catching up with his two favorite doms and the news came as more than a shock to him.
“Ask Charlie,” she replied with a sly smirk. Charlie gulped hard as she realized that all eyes were on her.
“Okay chill, I’ll spill it. But Daka you can’t get mad because we were on a break,” she warned before regaling the tale.
“Aight so boom,” she started with a chuckle.
“The house was pitch black with red candles leading the way to the grand family room where the festivities would take place. They were smart, choosing to rent out a house in the Hills far enough away from civilization as to not raise suspicions. Each room was labeled with the type of activity that was taking place inside, a precaution so no one could say they didn’t know what they were getting into. Everyone’s face was covered with masquerade masks, a means of preserving identities. But being as cunning as I am, I knew roughly 85% of the crowd. I stood clad in a white bodysuit, my bountiful breastesses accented with sheer lace. Around my neck was the diamond choker Henny gifted me last Christmas along with the custom white fur jacket Bastion made for me. A matching white masquerade mask hid my face from the rest of the room as I ventured deeper into the space. Will’s voice could be heard over the sensual music that flowed from the hidden speakers.
“Release all of your inhibitions. Tonight you’re free to be whoever you want to be. Relax, have fun, and unleash your demons.” Riveting speech, Fresh Prince. I smiled as a young buff man made his way towards me. His chest was perfectly chiseled, not as nice as yours, Daka, but it worked for the moment.” Erik kissed his teeth in annoyance before leaning back in his chair.
“I really don’t wanna hear this shit,” he pouted.
“Shit, we do!” Angél and Henny called in unison. Charlie giggled before continuing.
“You looking for a party?” he asked once he was directly in front of me.
“Sweetheart, King Jade is the party. On your knees.” He dropped without question, looking up at me as if he knew I were a goddess on earth. He could tell.
“Worship me.”
“You’re beautiful. The most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. Your eyes shine like diamonds in the night and your thighs look as though they hide the greatest treasure known to man.”
“Damn,” Henny interjected, looking pointedly at Erik. “How come you don’t compliment us like that?”
“Girl if you don’t shut yo ass up and eat them noodles,” Erik fussed. “You don’t be worried about compliments with my di—”
“Aight nigga damn. Nobody asked you all that. Continue Cha Cha.” Charlie slurped a noodle before looking down at her phone.
“Exactly how much did Jamie tell you so I know what holes to fill,” she said causing Hennessy to erupt in another fit of laughter.
“No pun intended!” Charlie laughed when she caught the joke.
“He said he walked in on you pegging Leo DiCaprio and Robert Ri’Chard And something about Beyoncé pegging Jay-Z.”
“Oh so you in other niggas booties now, Charlie?” Erik asked, crossing his arms over his chest with an attitude.
“First of all, lower your voice we’re in public. Second of all, mind your business. I told you we were on a break.” Angél kicked her feet and squealed in excitement as Charlie continued.
“To spare our husband the gory details, yes I pegged them both. Leo was a diva and kept trying to touch me, while Robert was the perfect sub. Yes Beyoncé pegged Jay and Diddy engaged in some “questionable” activities as well. But the true tea is what went on in Will and Jada’s room.” Hennessy ordered another round of margaritas for her and Charlie and another double Hennessy on the rocks for Erik before urging Charlie to continue.
“After I was done with my little Hollywood twinks, I began roaming the house to see what everyone else was up to. I walked until I stopped outside a large, red door. The sign outside only had a black X on it, so being the curious little nugget I am, I went in. I was immediately greeted with the sight of women on women and double penetrations galore.” Hennessy and Angel were on the edge of their seats.
“Who was in there, girl?” Henny coaxed.
“All I’ma say is, Angél, if you have a kissing scene with Jamie, don’t do it.”
“Wait bitch, what?!” Angél screamed, side eying her co-star.
“That man, along with a few others, takes and sucks more dick than any woman you’ve ever met, including us!”
“Who were the ‘few others’?” Angél asked as her eyes roamed the set.
“I couldn’t make out everyone, but I remember seeing Terrance Howard, Taye Diggs, and Wesley Snipes to name a few.”
Erik perked up at this.
“On yo mama?” Erik asked with a wide grin. “Wesley Snipes? Blade? Out here taking pipe?”
“On my mama. I seen it with my own eyes.” The quartet laughed loudly as Charlie continued the tale. Erik ended up finding humor in it all rather than being angry at the fact that she’d topped someone else.
“I still can’t believe you went King Jade on another nigga,” he fake pouted, showing off the slight patch in his beard.
“Not my fault I got bootyholes in different area codes.”
blisters; tom holland
pairing: tom holland x reader word count: 1,118 summary: you like to go rock climbing and one time you take tom with you. the next day you have blisters all over your hands, which you have sometimes. he gets worried and takes care of you.  warning: I added a lil bit jealous!tom, also asshole!tom hehe. (promise fluff will come) request by @myaftertaste, hope you like it.  my other work
Tumblr media
‘Hey Darling, wait where did you go?’ Tom asked you as you entered the house. ‘Came back from indoor rock climbing’ You lightly said and got a glass of water.
‘You do rock climbing?’ He sat up. ‘I’ve done it since I was a kid. I actually like to go outdoor rock climbing, but unfortunately it’s not the season. I thought you knew I did?’ You sat down next to him and pecked his lips. ‘No I did not know that. Seems like fun’ He said with a smile. He thought it was cute how you talked about rock climbing. Full of passion.
‘Do you wanna come with me tomorrow? Oh my god, Tom it would be the best if you came with me tomorrow!’ You squealed in excitement.
‘Of course, darling. Besides, it’s not that hard right?’ He gave you a kiss and chuckled.
‘What do you mean I have to do beginners class?’ Tom said to your trainer. ‘Dude, (Y/n) has done this for like an eternity. You’re not as skilled as she is. Chop chop, of to beginners class you go’ He told Tom and laughed.
The beginners class was given by your trainer, Tom’s instructor, on a smaller wall. You decided to climb next to the class to support your boyfriend.
Your instructor helped you strap in and went over to Tom, and like seven kids. The beginners class was usually kids from age six to twelve. But now they also had a grumpy twenty one year old.
When it was Tom’s turn he sighed and rubbed his eyes. Of course he was good at it and he was gonna show that stupid instructor of yours. ‘You’re doing so good, babe!’ You yelled from the top of the wall to Tom who was rushing to the top. Obviously he knew he was doing great, he was Spider-man for god’s sake, he knew how to climb a freaking wall.
‘(Y/n) focus!’ The instructor said. You let yourself slowly fall down. ‘Yeah, that’s more like it. Looking tight’ He said with a wink. You just returned a smile and continued. As the instructor finished his sentence, Tom snapped his head around. The guy looked at him as he stared at him with a hateful look on his face. The instructor shrugged and smirked. He was hitting on you and you did not even see it! Tom was so buried in his fury he did not look what he was doing. ‘Focus, Holland!’ He heard the instructor before he crashed down to the ground.
‘Tom!’ You screamed and quickly lowered yourself to get off. You quickly walked over to him. He was on the ground groaning in pain. ‘Baby, are you okay?’ You were genuinely concerned. ‘Yeah, I am (Y/n), don’t worry’ He jumped up, ignoring his pain and got out of his gear. ‘I quit’ He said and gritted his teeth towards the instructor as he threw the gear on the ground. ‘If you break that, you pay’ The instructor told him to piss him off. ‘It’s not like I can’t afford it’ Tom ended the conversation without looking behind him and left to go home.
You stared at him with your jaw dropped. He went into complete asshole mode. You apologized to your trainer and went to get your stuff and your boyfriend.
‘You had been sitting in the car in tense silence. ‘Do you want to ta-’ you began. ‘No’ He cut you off and kept driving.
After you both took a shower you would normally cuddle up and watch a show together. But you both did not feel like it.
‘Are you willing to talk to me right now?’ you approached Tom who was sitting on the bed looking at his phone. He looked up and let out a ‘hmpf’. ‘You gotta talk to me about this, what’s wrong? Yeah you fell down, so what? You didn’t have to go all diva on that guy!’ You exclaimed.
‘Diva? Me a diva? (Y/n) he was hitting on my girlfriend the least was trying to be was a diva. I thought we were doing this together not you dumping me in beginners class’ he said and looked away. ‘Hitting on me? He wasn’t he was just trying to help you and if you had followed beginners class for 15 minutes you could’ve climbed up the big boy wall with me!’
You both got louder and louder and the argument got hotter by the minute. ‘You know what? I’m done. I’ll sleep on the couch tonight!’ You yelled in his face and walked off, slamming the door behind you. Tom sighed and rubbed his face. He combed his hair with his hands and let himself fall on your bed.
An hour later you were knocked out on the couch. Tom went down to get you in bed and noticed your eyes being red as he picked you up. He sighed, he hated to see you cry over him. 'I’m so sorry, darling. I promise I’ll make it up to you’ he kissed your forehead and carried you upstairs. He put you in your bed and tucked you in. One last kiss on your cheek and he went downstairs to sleep on the couch.
'Good morning’ You saw Tom leaning against the door post as dimmed lights illuminated his face. You looked at your surrounding and noticed you were in bed. You looked up at him and before you could ask he said: 'I slept on the couch’. 'Here’s some breakfast’ he sat down a plate and a glass for you. As you dug in he sat next to you. ’(Y/n) I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, I overreacted. I don’t know what got into me I just wanted to do something fun with you, I love you’ he said with a smile. 'It’s okay, I love your too’ you kissed him on his cheek.
He turned your face to kiss you and took your hands in his. 'What are these?’ He turned your hands to expose nasty blisters you got from rock climbing. 'Just blisters, they’re not a big deal, honey’ you said with a giggle. 'You’re sure? Because I will call up a doctor right now, I will take you to the ER’ He was already in the bathroom looking for the first aid kid. 'Tom I assure you, it’s common in rock climbing, don’t worry come sit down’ you laughed. 'No I gotta check if you’re alright’ and with that he started putting bandages around your hands. What a dork.
A/n: We hit 300 followers!! Thanks friends, welcome to all the new friends (; The respond on dogs was great by the way!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BABE ZENDAYA OMG.
I went to the glasses people for a check up, because I’ve not worn my plus glasses for two years. I did not think I would be leaving with a new pair of negative glasses, what the fuck. Now I have to wear fucking glasses again 24/7. FUCK OFF. (i did pick a really cute brownish, 50s styled pair, but still). I was kinda pissed.
Thank you all so much with being patient. I am in senior year and the first two weeks have been hard! (I have a very empty agenda this weekend, hoping to write a lot)
You are awesome! Wanna talk? hit me up! Requests are welcome! (for those who sent in requests, I am working on them I promise x )
give this a little like if you liked it!
and I’ll see you in the next one!
Working Together(17)
Tumblr media
Camila
Uh it feels so good to be back. Those kids were holding me hostage for a while. Today I'm doing a few things. First a early heels private class my favorite the one on one connection is always amazing. Most woman I get do private as a confidence booster or maybe for training.
Next some meeting with someone oversea. They are coming all the way from Korea just to meet with little ole me. I'm hoping its something where I need to go there I've always wanted to travel the world.
Lastly sexy daddy aka my husband and I are getting in front of the camera again. We are Atlantas number one magazine "IT" power couple of the month.
As I'm stretching Bre the receptionist and my private student walks in. She had a real shy type vibe coming from her. "First Lady someone is here for you."
"Thanks bre. Hi beautiful!"
"Hi thanks for taking me on." She smiled. "Rachel."
"Right so before we start I wanna get you stretched out and help you get comfortable."
She set her things down. We start on the legs sitting legs open touching our toes. I start up a small conversation.
"How did you find out about these private classes?"
"Well don't get creeped out but I watch all your videos on the SWIZZ website so one day I was just browsing your page and came across the sign up page." She smiled shrugging.
"So tell me what you want to get from this class."
"Well I'm going through a break up...we were high school gone college sweethearts. Some time after the first semester things got weird and we became distant. He was my world but I wasn't his." She said following my next move. "I just want to feel beautiful and confident again. It feels like he took my heart when he left."
"Ok first I'm sorry you have to experience that feeling so young. Would it be to much to know why you guys broke up?"
"No uh...he said he wanted something different."
"So are you doing this to get him back?"
"No no I wanna improve for myself because one day I'll meet the man who won't do me wrong and treat me like the black queen I am. This private class is a start for my confidence I watch all your videos and the heel ones are my favorite. Everyone always looks so care free...I want that."
See why these are my favorite.
"I'm glad you came to me for that. Dance is my go to when I need a boost when I'm down anything really. So we are about to bring out that inner diva your own Sasha fierce. My diva name is Storm."
She blushed. "Ok mine is...Fine Wine."
"Yes I love it! Let's get things going I chose Permission by Ro James it's my shit right now. Do you have any dance experience?"
"Yes I did cheerleading in high school and I was a majorette band dancer in college. It's been a while tho so let's do a beginners."
She was a easy teach we mostly focused on body movement rather the actual dance. Feeling the music letting her body in a way tell a story. Bring out the sexy in her.
  Xdance
As we are ending my husband walks in after knocking. He smiled standing to the side.
"You did so good and looked like the sexiest little thing. I hope to see you at some of my other classes."
"Yes this was so much fun every time I hear that song I'm gonna just break out into my Fine Wine."
"She's a magic worker huh?" Chris comes up his famous slick smirk on his face.
"Defiantly. Hi I'm Rachel." They shook hands before he came over towering me.
We look at each other just smiling. "What?"
He took me by surprise kissing me then walking away laughing like the villain he is. "Your meeting starts in a few hours."
"Thanks. Rachel I hope you had fun today."
"Yes I definitely did it gonna schedule another private before I leave out."
She got her stuff gave me a hug then left out. I got a water sitting against the mirror.
"Nah nah get on up First Lady." Chris came standing over me. "You can shower in the locker rooms by the gym then meet me in my office."
He helped me up tapping my ass. "Uh I don't wanna shower."
"You want daddy to help you get clean again?" He pulled my back into his chest.
His hands move down squeezing my thighs making me bit my lip. Looking up I catch us in the mirror. Kisses on my neck have me giggling and squirming.
"Baby stop before you start something." I tried pushing him off.
"I missed you...that whole hour you weren't with me."
"Aww I missed you to baby. Gimme a kiss so I can go start getting ready for this meeting."
He groaned squeezing me. "No let's steam up this room real quick."
*1 1/2 hour later*
I really hate him sometimes! In the middle of round two bre almost caught us. She only came up because who I'm having my meeting with was on his way.
Now I'm rushing trying to get dressed fix my hair do my make up. I probably look like a head less chicken! Getting off the elevator I run my hands down my skirt walking to Chris office. Knocking first I slowly step in. A older guy and four girls sat in front of his desk.
"오, 세상에, 그녀 야!" One said as the other three gasp. (Oh my gosh it's her)
They stood bowing. "Ok hi." I waved feeling a little awkward.
"Baby this is Mr Shaw and his girl group their from South Korea." Chris took my hand leading us back to his desk letting me sit in his chair while he stood behind it.
"It is very nice to meet you Mrs Washington I am their manager. My girls are huge fans of your work especially with Tinashe." Mr Shawn says reaching out for my hand and bowing.
"Oh thank you so much."
"They came all this way to meet you. Their first performance is coming up soon and they wanted no requested you to do the choreography."
"Awesome I've never worked with anyone from another country before. So what are you guys name since you know me already."
"I'm Lalisa you can just call me Lisa I'm the lead rapper."
"I'm Jennie vocalist I also rap."
"I'm Jisoo the vocalist."
"I'm Chae-young but everyone calls me rose I'm the lead vocalist and we as a group are BlackPink."
Tumblr media
(Names in order of picture)
I smiled nodding. "Cute name well thank you for coming to me and trusting me to make your first performance a big one."
"It was a must we watch your videos all the time! We just got signed to the Korean label YG and they want us to wow everyone." Jennie says.
"I can definitely do that. Where is your first performance?"
This is big! A girl group all the way from South Korea wants me little ole me to work with them. Since I'm keeping my professional face on no one call really tell how hype I am but just guess.
"It's for a popular music show all the most currant groups and artist start their and if they do good they shoot off to stardom." Lisa says.
"And we don't want to be like the others. Most people first thought of girl groups where we are from instantly think like twelve girls cute bubbly giggle every five seconds...we don't want that." Jisoo.
"Oh yeah I totally got that vibe from you guys your style is really street but a girly street. I'd love to work with guys so let's set everything up!"
They cheered. A contract was pulled out and chris helped me with negotiating to make sure everything was safe and fair. I got pictures with the girls and they gave me the song they plan on performing.
Right after the door closed Camila was jumping and screaming. Smiling I watched. "You excited?"
"Look at me of course I'm excited! Oh my god baby can you believe this!?"
"Hell yeah I can you are an amazing dancer and more and more people are seeing that. Congratulations First Lady."
She smiled cupping her face rushing up to me. "You had a big part in this to. They saw me because I came over here if it wasn't for that site this probably wouldn't be happening...thank you so much baby for believing in me."
Moments like this. We support each other I'm her back bone she's my cheerleader. I couldn't be more proud of my wife. We stood in my office hugging her flipping out every other second.
"Uh I'm so fucking hype like...AH! I want celebration sex." She smiled at me.
"What?"
"Drop the slacks daddy-O." She ran locking the door then started stripping. "Come on now baby hurry up." She whined.
"Ok ok. Claim your thrown my queen."
*2 1/2 hours* Right now everything has been pushed off my desk. We lay on top my wife riding me to the the mother land. She bounced her ass at a perfect speed.
"Shit girl." I groan dropping my hands from her waist.
"Oh papi." She wines her hips slow.
"Got damn I'm about to nut." Thrusting my hips into her she screams out letting her sweets leak down my dick and thighs.
Quickly hoping up she took me in her mouth sucking and rubbing until I reach my own climax.
"Mmmmm you know I kinda miss having you cum inside me." Licking clean she smiled still stroking me.
"I know we can always start using condoms."
She turned her face up at me. "Fuck that we've never used them before. I've been thinking more into getting my tubes burned or tied."
"Really?"
"Yeah why stop the supply when you can just close down the factory."
"Um ok if that's what you wanna do baby like always I'm here for you."
"I know let's get dressed and thank you for dicking me down oh so nicely."
We went home to shower and change before heading to our next thing of the day. In the car we hold hands as I'm driving. Making conversation here and there.
"Have you noticed Stanley and Mona acting a little weird lately?"
"Kind of they aren't together all the time."
"Yeah and I don't feel as close with them anymore."
"Why don't you try to do something with them? Take them shopping or to a salon then just talk see what's in those teenage heads. Maybe I'll do something with Maurice while y'all do that."
Since we both can be pretty busy time with the kids is special. Rather it's everyone going out to eat or movie nights in the house. Something for everyone. I love all my badass kids their all the product of the love I have for this woman next to me. Now I'm not gonna say I have any favorites but I do happen to maybe like three out of six a little more than the others. None of them have to know that tho.
"Do you think I'm a good mom?"
"Yes why you ask?"
"I'm softer on the kids I don't discipline them like you or at all most times. I just want to make sure I'm not setting them up for failure later in life."
"I think you are a great mother. Maybe be a little tougher on them cause I know you wouldn't like it if one day one of them decide they don't want to listen to you anymore. I know you sometimes think I'm to hard on them but it's all out of love. And then once their grown what they do is all on them out job as their parents is to teach them right from wrong what they chose to do with the knowledge they get is not our fault. So say if one of them goes to jail or something you don't blame yourself or your parenting skills that child just made the wrong decision."
She leaded over kissing on my cheek and neck. "I love you so much."
Smirking I pull into a space in front of the building. "yo te quiero más." She moaned kissing my lips this time. (I love you more)
Walking into the building we are greeted and taken to the second floor.
"Our couple of the month everyone!" A room full of people clapped as we walk in.
"Oh wow hi." Camila nervously waved.
"Welcome thank you for coming in. We are so happy to finally have you two featured on our magazine it's a shoing to be on of our best sellers." A guy shook our hands.
We sat in the last two free seats. "It's all love we are more than happy to be apart of this."
"Great wonderful so today we want to do everything! Being that you all have a big family it wouldn't be right to keep you for to long. I will be the editor for the magazine this month being that our company splits us up by months so no one gets left out."
Smart.
"This is our wardrobe and make up/hair team they will be styling you both. The photographer one of the best here, and the interview will be given by me recorded by my assistant."
"Sounds nice you guys are really put together."
"Thank you very much. We can start on the interview part now while these guys go set everything up and I'm gonna get started with the interview."
Everyone else left out.
British Soul-Singer Jessie Ware Talks Wig Snatching, BFF Sam Smith
Jessie Ware only recently learned what “wig snatching” means, and fresh off the European leg of her current tour, I’ve taught her “guncle.” The 33-year-old British songstress takes full advantage of this latest lesson in queer-speak, breaking from our phone chat just long enough to inform her gay brother, Alex, he’s a guncle (“I’ll take that,” he says). With Ware’s nearly-two-year-old baby girl in tow, the siblings have just arrived at a Palm Springs lodge they rented, a family vacation before Ware’s Coachella performance.
For her solo live shows, Ware’s culled a set list encompassing her three musically varied releases: her debut Devotion (2012), which features her breakout single “Wildest Moments;” her even-more sophisticated Tough Love (2014); and last year’s experimental Glasshouse, a collection so deeply personal she tells me she wants to turn around and record a full album of escapist club music next.
Though jet-lagged, Ware discusses her plans to start watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, her supportive friendship with Sam Smith, and how the queer community helped her through a very challenging time.
Speaking of your brother, is he dating one of your gay fans yet?
No, he isn’t dating one of my gay fans yet. But he was on tour with me and we were in Berlin, and I could see it was a really gay crowd. It was such a wild night, and I was like, “Listen, guys, my brother’s looking fab tonight, it’s Berlin, a lot of very handsome men out there; who would be up for taking my brother out?” It turns out that my brother had been on a date with one of them previously in the day, and Alex texted me after the show, “I don’t need you to pimp me out. I’m fine.” But I have tried. There’s been some admirers, but I definitely think he’s enjoyed — I’m sure he’s definitely used it to his advantage before. But no, we don’t have a new guncle to add.
“Taking in Water,” a song from your first album that’s about your brother’s struggle to come out, is so special and has meant a lot to many queer people.
You’re making me wanna put it back in the show. I haven’t got it in the set. I haven’t sung it for years, and I love that song. I remember how much people loved it, and you’re making me think maybe I should practice it with my band.
I’m sure that would make a lot of gay people very happy. By the way, I hear there’s been some wig-snatching going on at these performances.
Oh my goodness, the wig snatching has been a revolution and also so fun.
Didn’t someone throw a wig on stage at your Manchester show?
I’ve had multiple wigs, thongs, bras. The first wig I accidentally dragged around with my heels like a dead cat. I hadn’t seen it come on the stage, and then I walked around with it. It kind of ruined the wig-snatching moment; it wasn’t as fabulous as it could have been. But it did make everyone laugh.
A wig is one thing, but what prompts a fan to throw a thong on stage?
I don’t know if they’re all just trying to entertain me and they know I find it hysterical… but you know, it’s not just gay men — I think maybe that was from a gay woman, and that was fabulous.
Or a drag queen.
Or a drag queen! Absolutely. I’d kind of love it to be from a drag queen, but I didn’t see any in the audience. When the song “Midnight” [the first single from Glasshouse] came out, I had been away [from touring] for a bit. I came back and “Midnight” was this kind of fierce diva moment for me. I really sang out, and I think my fans really enjoyed it.
The online world has always been pretty positive for me, but just hysterical — memes and gifs. I feel like such a fucking old woman! It was just so fun, and I didn’t know what wig snatching was. It comes from RuPaul’s Drag Race, right? And I feel really bad because RuPaul has always been really sweet. From the beginning, RuPaul would retweet videos of mine, and I think some contestants have performed some of my songs on the show. So, I need to watch it because I had to Google what “wig snatching” meant, and it was kind of embarrassing. It made me feel very straight and very old.
You kept Whitney and Barbra vinyls in the recording studio while making Devotion. For Glasshouse, which divas were guiding you?
I think spiritual guides for Glasshouse were probably Carole King and Nina Simone, even though you probably can’t hear that in the record. And Joni Mitchell. I really got obsessed with the art of songwriting. That was something I felt I needed to improve upon, and I really appreciate what [those artists] were doing.
When we spoke in 2012, you couldn’t quite explain why the queer community connected with you. Six years later, has the root of that bond become clearer?
If I’m being honest, I still don’t know why they embrace me, but I enjoy it. It’s been so important to my shows: It’s given me energy, it’s given me confidence.
When I was a rabbit in the headlights [starting out] five years ago, they gave me the confidence I needed to feel like I could go into — as much as it was maybe tongue in cheek for me — that diva mode, which I think they really celebrate. And I tried to do that for this show. It’s almost escapism and it’s fun, and that’s how a live show should be. I’ll never forget how loyal they’ve been; that counts as something when you’re three albums in and fans come back from five years ago.
Sam Smith is a devoted fan and has been tweeting about you since the beginning of your career.
He’s a really good friend of mine, and we’re so proud of each other. He’s so supportive. And I love that all his backstage shots are of him in, like, the highest heels — that I can’t even wear — and a wig. Seems like every day he has a different wig and a different heel on. Above all, he’s a really good friend. He’s at the end of the phone [when I need him]  — like I am for him when he has worries and he wants to complain about this bloody industry. It’s a tough, old industry, and he’s incredibly supportive, and I love him. I love him so much.
What industry challenges have you had to deal with?
Sometimes the business side of the industry was [eclipsing] the creative side, and it took me to really just stop and be like, “I feel a little bit dead on the stage.” I was lacking confidence. I just had a baby; I thought people were going to judge, however stupid that sounds. It’s a very male-led industry — straight, male-led industry — and they have opinions. And those seep into you whether you like it or not. I’m a pretty strong woman, I think, but you can’t help but have that. You come back from having a baby, and I felt I had so much to prove. I had to kind of be — pretend to be — this superwoman who could do everything. It was just … it’s been exhausting.
This record was really important for me to write because it was documenting a stage in my life which was new. And I have all these emotions and feelings, and I think sometimes you feel a little bit dead, you run out of new feelings. Having a child was a different kind of love, which was so inspiring and amazing to write about, but also the most challenging. I think what’s next for me is, I wanna make a record that’s pure dance, and I think it’s because of the queer community.
What, personally, inspired this upcoming dance detour?
I think it’s a reaction to doing something so autobiographical for this third record. I don’t feel like I need to do that again. I wanna test myself — it’s a challenge. I see the reaction to songs like “If You’re Never Gonna Move” and “Midnight,” these more bombastic, uptempo things — I hate the word ‘uptempo;’ it doesn’t make it sound as important — but I feel like I really wanna enjoy that soul boogie. Can I say ‘disco’? I don’t know.
Club music?
Club music! Which is where I came from! Sometimes you kind of forget — I haven’t forgotten where I came from. I have a lot of love for that world that embraced me at the beginning, and I feel like I wanna go back to it and enjoy it and dance.
Who are your dance divas?
Chaka Khan. Any of the Whitney upbeat stuff. I love Róisín Murphy, I love Tina Marie.
Sounds like this album could help loosen you up.
And I think that’s what I need! This job is supposed to be fun, and sometimes you forget. It’s something that especially the queer community will enjoy. I’ve done enough mid-tempo ballads. It’s time for a bit of a switch-up.
Who are your dance divas?
Chaka Khan. Any of the Whitney upbeat stuff. I love Róisín Murphy, I love Tina Marie.
Sounds like this album could help loosen you up.
And I think that’s what I need! This job is supposed to be fun, and sometimes you forget. It’s something that especially the queer community will enjoy. I’ve done enough mid-tempo ballads. It’s time for a bit of a switch-up.
yellin’ at songs, week forty
oops
brief considerations of the songs which debuted on billboard on 10.11.1997, 10.13.2007, and 10.14.2017
10.11.1997
1) "Candle in the Wind 1997/Something in the Way You Look Tonight," by Elton John
princess diana seemed like a nice person and i don't agree that it is good that she passed on. i think she should have continued to live, and finally, i found a song that agrees with my worldview.
44) "Too Gone, Too Long," by En Vogue
So real talk this is late because one week I saw two Post Malone songs and I said fuck it because, like, it's, and I just, I don't think it's fair when older generations yell at younger generations? But the average '90s R&B track was infinitely better than the average '10s anything. You could drive down the street bumping the radio and a song like this, with that small miracle that happens around the 3:00 mark, and this would be like the seventh-best song you'd hear. Kids these days are just listening to songs that don't make any stabs at greatness, they just exist in a way that doesn't motivate you to change the station. The problem is with the children. I'm not actually talking about this song, I'm talking about the way people consume music. This song is heckin' great and everyone should listen to it 20 times and then try to get through a Post Malone song.
58) "Heaven," by Nu Flavor
In this overly intense '90s R&B slo jamz, the R&B boys plead to God to convince this woman to fuck them. That sentence is the last thing I wrote for YAS before taking a weeks-long sabbatical and I'm glad I found it.
63) "Love Gets Me Every Time," by Shania Twain
Where do we rank Shania Twain in the diva pantheon? Like, this is a song with a hook I recognized when I heard it, after 20 years of just not thinking about this song I heard "dolgurn gone and done it" and was like "oh yeah! This jam!" and not all singers can dig that deep into your memory, but in terms of historical import, where does she rank? You can't really argue that "country needs a rep in the pantheon" because um hello? Dolly? but there's at least four Shania songs that are absolutely legendary. Does that merit inclusion among the greats? Or is Shania just on that second tier with a Kelly Clarkson or a Carrie Underwood, reliable but not as powerful as the women we'll tell our grandkids about?
65) "Electric Barbarella," by Duran Duran
One of the things that struck me as odd about the film Sing Street was the reverence with which the film treated Duran Duran. I always sort of thought Duran Duran was a boy band, but there was a film set in the heyday of Duran Duran's popularity, with a scene where an older brother extols the virtues of Duran Duran's musicianship to a younger brother, and I'm just like, "I never would have guessed this band was at the vanguard of new wave?" But I guess maybe they were a less dark Depeche Mode and I should check this out because this song from 1997 probably isn't indicative of peak Duran Duran? Hello welcome back to YAS I'm already asking questions to no one instead of offering criticism, it's like I never left.
70) "They Like it Slow," by H-Town
Sometimes, when you abandon a project for a while and come back, you notice things about the thing you're doing that you never would have noticed if you had worked on it in the last two months. To that end: I just realized all the 1997 and prolly most of the 2007 music videos were shot in 4:3. Like, when they filmed these music videos, they were composing shots with the idea they would be on TVs. That's kind of interesting! Like, when you go to film school, you probably have the idea you're gonna direct films, so having to compose shots for a smaller aspect ratio probably fucks you up a little bit. Anyway, I can't tell if this '90s R&B slo jamz is a parody or not.
87) "A Smile Like Yours," by Natalie Cole
"I have seen the bluest skies/Rainbows that would make you cry." It's absolutely amazing which lines in these songs gain significance from 20 years of events. Like, that line about rainbows takes on a whole new meaning now that we've all enjoyed and then forgot about the Double Rainbow video.
91) "Alright," by Jamiroquai
groovy! i’m okay with this! this is like what all the calvin harris songs would sound like if they were good.
92) "Spin Spin Sugar," by Sneaker Pimps
there's so much cool stuff happening in this song and i really just wanna sit down and get to know this band a lot more because they've always seemed like something i was supposed to like and now i realize that i do actually like them, unfortunately WE'RE LISTENING TO 100 SONGS TONIGHT GOODBYE GOOD SONG I WILL KEEP THIS MEMORY WARM IN MY HEART UNTIL THE END OF TIME
10.13.2007
58) "Tattoo," Jordin Sparks
This is a song that just barely missed the lyric video trend. If any song needed to have words appearing on random actors' skin, it was this one, it would have been such a no-brainer decision. Like, you do it right, hire some calligraphers and tell them to take it up a thousand notches, you have a classic lyric video. Wasn't e'er to be, though. Just a standard music video, and I guess a nice song? It's very2007. It's very the sort of song you'd give to the winner of a forgettable Idol season. "Oh, that? Uh, yeah, keep it. It's either going on this album or in that trash can, might as well use every part of the buffalo that is my brain."
80) "The Way I Am," Ingrid Michaelson
this is the sonic version of a scarf worn indoors in june
86) "Our Song," Tay Tay
"Our song is a slammin' screen door." Did you know Tay Tay's dad was an investment banker? I have reason to believe Tay Tay's only seen a screen door in movies. I dunno. Do rich people have screen doors? I've never been in a mansion, but I don't think screen doors would be appropriate for mansions.
91) "Shoulda Let You Go," Keyshia Cole intro./Amina
I like how Billboard gave Amina an "introducing" credit. You don't see that in music nowadays. Now it's just "hey this 17-year-old has a million plays on Soundcloud, what do you mean you 'haven't heard of him,' he's already been responsible for thirteen memes and they're all dead, we're actually over him already, he's lame now." It is now known that Amina was actually a woman who was okay at rapping. The point still stands, I'd at least like to know that the randos on these songs are people no one but the people who made this song know.
96) "Hypnotized," Piles ft./Akon
"I know she wet 'cuz she told me." I don't know why, but this line tickles me! "Piles, you got me so wet." "YO, SHE'S WET! I MADE HER WET, GUYS!" "You touch mine and I touch yours." Piles must be hypnotized because in my (admittedly limited) experience with his work he doesn't seem like a man who gives head. He seems like a man who needs to be coerced into reciprocating pleasure.
97) "Nothin' Better to Do," LeAnn Rimes
OK so real talk, while I was listening to this song I got distracted because I realized I hadn't updated my Poke Bank subscription in like a year and I have so many precious little babies I need to keep forever, and you know what? This is a fun song. I didn't really need to pay attention to it! It's a song about being naughty that keeps it PG enough to play on country radio, and I wouldn't mind bumping into it again!
100) "Fake It," Seether
So Amy Lee and the dude from Seether broke up. After the break-up, Evanescence hit first with "Call Me When You're Sober," which isn't a particularly devastating song, but the title is incredibly unsubtle, and, like, Seether's a shitty post-grunge band, of course he's an alcoholic, and Amy Lee is right to say "yo I'm kinda done with this, I don't like dealing with the drunk you." Seether strikes back by saying Amy Lee is a liar and that he "feels so raped," and Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'm gonna go ahead and say that's #problematic! Amy Lee made a dumb but fair song about how she was out of patience, and here comes Donald Trump by way of Creed to say "YOU ARE RAPING ME WITH THIS BREAK-UP." Like, I'm gonna go ahead and say that the part using rape metaphors to describe their feelings is the one in the wrong in this mediation.
10.14.2017
65) "I Fall Apart," by Post Malone 100) "Go Flex," by Post Malone
i could have spent eight minutes sitting perfectly still listening to ambient noise and have had the same emotional reaction. "never caught a feeling this hard/harder than the liquor i pour." oh fuck off already.
70) "Good Old Days," by Macklemore ft./Kesha
FINALLY. The pop music gods have heard my prayers: Macklemore rapping about nostalgia. Everything I love, in one delightful package! ...He shouts out Minnesota and this is probably gonna end up being the best song from this week because of that and also because this week is lookin' pretty horrible.
94) "Losing Sleep," by Chris Young
OK so real talk during this bro country joint I got distracted because I was looking at new music releases and APPARENTLY THERE'S AN ANIMATED MOVIE BASED ON "ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU?" IT WAS MADE THIS YEAR? THIS YEAR. YOU CAN BUY IT ON DVD TODAY AND OWN IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR FUCKING LIFE. I'm sorry. I'm not going to bother processing whatever bullshit this song is about, sex I guess, because THIS WORLD IS CAPABLE OF SO MUCH MORE. This is a movie. This is also a movie which presupposes that this entire time "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is about a puppy that Mariah Carey needed for a... charity fashion show? "Great! We're short one girl with a dog!" "Oh..." This is a cinematic masterpiece and my life is better for having stumbled across it. This and Pokemon Christmas Bash.
95) "Like I Loved You," by Brett Young
So the writer of Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You is one Temple Mathews, who has also written The Little Mermaid II, Peter Pan II, and 101 Dalmatians 2. That is a fucking nuts credit roll, Temple. Dude also goes multiple years between projects, which suggests to me he's like someone at Disney's cousin, and every couple years that person at Disney goes "hey, Temple, wanna make $100,000?" and Temple says "fuck yeah bro" and Temple just lives off that. He makes smart investments and lives in a cabin in Montana and has never actually seen a movie because why would you look at pictures when you've got mountains in your backyard? Temple is living the best life. Dude's my hero. He has someone describe a cartoon to him and writes something based off that and never has to write a second draft.
97) "Round Here Buzz," by Eric Church
Listen, if Eric Church is gonna give us repeats of songs he's done before, at least he's giving us repeats of "Give Me Back My Hometown." It's a slower, sadder version of that song, one that can't be misconstrued as an "I'm poor AND PROUD OF IT!" anthem, this is a song that can only be about a dude thinking about a girl living a life without him while he lives a life with her ghost, but also "Give Me Back My Hometown" is more fun? I dunno, this still prolly gets 2017 SOTY, I've just heard it before. Also, Eric Church? Welcome to the Decade Dance Club. You are the 36th member, and the tenth white male country artist.
98) "Plain Jane," by A$AP Ferg
ok nvm this is song of the week, simply because in the first verse Ferg raised and lowered the volume of his voice. this song went somewhere! this song actually did something! it didn't just bleep and bloop for three minutes or be about how it's nice when things are good, Ferg had things he wanted to say and delivered his lines with actual emotions! he did the bare goddamn minimum, and by 2017 standards, that's pretty good! i'm actually going to remember this song a little bit!
Who won the week?
1997. Like, of course 1997 won. It had Sneaker Pimps and Shania, if 1997 lost to these other wack-ass years it would’ve been stunning.
Standings: 1997: 15 2007: 12 2017: 13 oh god all the songs for the next edition look awful, welp
Music: Personal Best of 2016
On the last day of 2016 I made a thread of the songs I thought were the best that year from albums I loved. This isn’t all inclusive or definitive. I also haven’t listened all the way through all of these albums, honestly, so some will just be songs that were introduced to me by Nathan Zed’s amazing playlists. Also, there will be A LOT of links here because you should listen to these songs. Here we gooo!
Infatuation - All-American Trash BROCKHAMPTON
This song. This mixtape. This group. I knew of Kevin Abstract because The Neighbourhood took him under their wing and had him open for them. I paid a little attention to him, but then Nathan Zed put Camp Green Lake on a playlist and I fell in love. I saw that the label was BROCKHAMPTON and I found just the name pleasing. I listened to Dirt and it was immediately what I wanted it to be. I decided to listen to their mixtape All-American Trash and was enthralled and infatuated (wink wink). It’s an incredible project and far from trash.
For this song in particular, I can’t even pin what I love--it’s everything. The melody, the strange second verse, the imagery it gives me, how cool it sounds, its flow, the beautiful way the singing, rapping, and beat come together. EVERYTHING.
Runners Up: Palace (very close second), Cotton Hollow
American Boyfriend - American Boyfriend Kevin Abstract
It is so hard to choose a favorite from this marvelous album. I thought MTV1987 was a masterpiece and Kevin kept tweeting his new album was “pop as f***.” I wasn’t sure I was ready. To be honest, it wasn’t my favorite upon first listen but I was into it. Then I decided I wanted to see him live and that I needed to appreciate the album in all its glory so I listened to it again and I had no idea what I was thinking before. It’s absolutely beautiful.
I think the titular song is my favorite, it’s exceptionally difficult to choose. I’m all about cinematics, and this song sounds like the slow motion sequence in every teenage romance movie you’ve ever seen--but in a good way. It’s simple but tells a story. It makes you want to slow dance at prom again then cry yourself to sleep. That may not sound appealing to some, but that’s pretty much my aesthetic.
Honorable Mention: Empty. Wow. This song. This is why it’s so hard to choose. Again, cinematic grandeur is highly appealing to me and the beginning of this song emulates that song. It sounds like a journey through a high school outcast’s day, you can see everything he’s going through. By the chorus, it appears to be a love song to another person, but it’s more about a vicious cycle of home struggles and consequent self-loathing. When looked at that way, the chorus sounds more like a deep need for support. I think it’s important that music tells an honest story and doesn’t try to be popular. Also, this song over all is just beautiful.
Runners Up (extremely close, basically they’re all in first): Empty, Miserable America
Me and Your Mama - “Awaken, My Love!” Childish Gambino
Most people have turned onto Redbone now, which is fine, but this song will always be close to my heart. I can envision this song, I’ve lived this song, and I’ve literally felt this song.
I was one of the lucky people that got to go to PHAROS back in September. Here’s the thing about Gambino: an album is not just a release, it’s an artistic event. He doesn’t put music out for money and notoriety, and doesn’t go halfway. I was too late for the era of Camp, but for Because the Internet, the man created a short film that connected BTI and Camp and wrote an entire screenplay for the album along with visuals for each song. For “Awaken, My Love!”, he brought PHAROS to life; a live album listening party/music festival. Complete with food trucks, an art gallery, and a theater to screen the first two episodes of Atlanta. And when he performed his album, he didn’t just sing his songs--he put on a show. I’ll go into more detail about it later, but this album was an event, not a music release.
I didn’t know the words or even the titles at the time, but Me and Your Mama was without a doubt my favorite when I heard it live. I didn’t even know it and I still fully appreciated it. When he released it and I finally got to hear the words, I was taken. I was already in love with him but this song made me go deeper. I remember saying, “This is the shortest 6 minute I’ve ever heard.” At a certain point with most songs that run long, you get bored. I’ve never got bored with this song, because like I said: I’ve lived this song.
For some people it’s lost love, for me it’s unrequited. It can go either way. But let me break this down.
In the first 2 minutes, I’m floating through space. A choir is singing me through space and what they’re saying may not completely make sense but in the most wonderful way. I can hear the stars twinkling. The bass begins to intensify and I’m rising and rising, and then it drops and I’m falling through a tear in the universe. I’m falling falling falling, there’s nothing I can do to catch myself. And the devil laughs at my demise. “LET ME INTO YOUR HEART.” I don’t have to write about that. I keep falling and it gets more desperate, you can hear it in Gambino’s voice. Even the choir screams. I’ve been falling for 2 minutes, then something catches me. And it becomes dejected acceptance. There are no lyrics, no choir, no twinkling stars or even laughing devil. I’m back on earth and I take a long walk home. For the last 2 minutes.
I’ve felt it too many times not to know. The song can feel different for everyone, it probably means something different to Gambino based on the title, but I know this is what it is for me.
I love it because of what it means, because the extremity, pain, and desperation in Gambino’s beautiful voice, because of the way he sectioned off, giving each a mind of its own that becomes one coherent story.
Runners Up: Redbone, Zombies
Janet - Berhana - EP Berhana
I’ll be honest, I haven’t listened to this whole EP, and I haven’t searched for a deep meaning in this song, I just like the way it sounds. It makes me want to sway in someone’s front yard and drink pineapple juice. I also love his voice. This was another song I found because of Nathan Zed.
Seigfried - Blond Frank Ocean
I’m not even really a Frank Ocean fan. I feel nothing about Channel Orange vs Blond/e, I have selective favorites on both albums. For this album, it was a labor to choose my favorite but I decided on Seigfried. Just because of the way it makes me feel. I also love singing along to it. It sounds like the kinds of movies I love watching and want to make. By now, you probably just think I’m an emo youngin. You’re... not wrong. But I’m okay with that. Because feeling people make some damn beautiful music. And art overall.
One thing I really love about this song is this sequence:
This, this fe-, this feel This feel, this feels This feels ironic This feels ironic Ironic, this feels ironic Ironic
If those are the lyrics, I’ve seen others. But it’s not about that. It’s about the fact that it restricts my breath. The fact that the confusion in the melody makes me tear up. In Flight of the Navigator, Gambino says, “And even when you laughed, you cried / And even when you were sad, you were really happy” and that part of Seigfried emulates that even better than Flight of the Navigator.
I also love Frank’s “monologue” toward the end; “Speaking of nirvana, it was there.” I can see it, I can feel it.
Runners Up: Pink + White, Skyline To, Self Control (they’re all in first place a third one is okay)
Slave - Bobby Tarantino Logic
I’m going to make a bit of a bold statement: Logic is the best rapper I listen to. As for discography and fan factor, I’m not as into him as I am Gambino, even Kanye. But his flow. Is unbelievable. When I was driving home today, this song came on and I just started screaming. 44 Bars and Deeper Than Money are extremely close seconds (that’s happened a lot while making this playlist and you can see). ANYWAY, what I’m saying is, his flow is the best out of all the rappers I listen to. It’s smooth as hell, rarely makes me laugh or shake my head, and puts me in awe of his talent no matter how many times I’ve heard the song. I can’t exactly explain why I chose this song over the other two, it just felt right.
Runners Up: 44 Bars, Deeper Than Money
All Night - Coloring Book Chance the Rapper
I wrote on twitter: “this song is so much fun it makes me wanna actually go outside & live.” That basically sums it up. I haven’t listened to all of Coloring Book yet because it takes me 20 years to get around to everything that’s good for me, but out of what I’ve heard, this is definitely my favorite. It makes me think one of the only parties I’ve actually had fun at and just puts me in a good mood, what else do I need? Yet another song Nathan Zed introduced me to.
Greedy - Dangerous Woman
Ariana Grande
I don’t care that Ariana Grande doesn’t write her own music and that all her songs are implicitly about sex, her talent is UNREAL. She’s one of the few uber famous pop divas that can actually sing and she’s not just “good.” Her voice gives me chills and she is a force to be reckoned with. Again, so hard to choose. It was even hard to choose the runners up. But Greedy had be from literally the first half a second. The first time I heard “GREEEEEDAAAYYYY” I thought, “THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG.” This song is a ton of fun and just one that displays her vocal ability.
Honorable Mention: Leave Me Lonely. A powerful and deeply emotional song that she sings with such care. Another song I can feel and that definitely displays her range. Also, Macy Gray is a great addition.
Runners Up: Leave Me Lonely, Bad Decisions
Daydream - Single Medasin
I was introduced to Medasin through Masego who I was introduced to by--you guessed it--Nathan Zed. I love Masego and Medasin’s collaboration album and thought I should look a bit deeper into Medasin. This song makes me want to sway and salsa by the beach drinking limeade. It’s like I can taste and smell it. And I do think it perfectly characterizes a daydream.
Dang! - The Divine Feminine MAC MILLER
If there’s any album I know I need to listen to all the way through it’s The Divine Feminine. I’m getting there, I promise. Dang! is another song that’s too fun and too groovy. This was just about everyone’s favorite and it’s easily apparent why.
Runners Up: Stay, My Favorite Part
In Your River - Don’t Explain - EP Snoh Aalegra
This song gives me 60s nostalgia. It’s cinematic and marvelous. My brother explained that this style is called Brills Building. It’s quite reminiscent of the Mad Men theme for a reason. Also, it samples Stark’s Reality by BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah. It all comes together wonderfully. This woman’s voice is incredible. It’s rough and smooth at the same time, and again, gives you 60s nostalgia from the upperclass side, even if you didn’t live through them.
Bad Blood - For All We Know NAO
If any song made me feel in 2016, it’s this one. It’s become the theme of a situation for me. Her voice is a new, refreshing one to me. She doesn’t “sound like” anyone to me. And I can identify with the hurt and contempt she emits through this song. Especially in the bridge. I haven’t listened to this whole album, but I know I should soon.
Highlights - The Life of Pablo Kanye West
I listened to this song just about every day for 3 weeks on my trek across campus to class. I love this album overall, although Graduation is my favorite, but I chose this one because it’s another that’s so much fun and that makes me want to go out, dance, and live. And the lyrics are GUTS.
Honorable Mention: Low Lights. The first time I heard it I thought, “oh that’s cool.” Then when I was really going through something and God kept me yet again, it hit my soul. All I can remember is raising my hand to Heaven, truly crying my soul out, and praising and thanking God for being so gracious and everything He’s done for me, especially when I didn’t deserve it. Because I never have. I still don’t. It’s not really Kanye’s song, but I’m grateful he put it on the album or I might’ve never heard it. I want a tattoo of a lyric from it, I just haven’t decided which.
Runners Up: Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1, Freestyle 4
Wifeable - Loose Thoughts Masego
This song, this album, this man -- all SO much fun. So carefree and joy-inducing. My roommate and I always used to dance to this song. And I just think it’s cute!
Honorable Mention: Small Talk. “Small talk, small talk, we don’t want no small talk / Dancin, dancin, yeah we love that dancin”: my absolute theme song. I hate small talk. I could write a book about the menial things I’d rather do. But you know what I love? DANCIN.
Runners Up: Small Talk, Too Much
For Free - Major Key DJ Khaled feat. Drake
I think there’s only one other song on this album that I really love, but that’s not the point. THIS SONG IS FIRE. MY ROOMMATE AND I BUMP THIS NIGHTLY. IN THE CAR, ON THE WAY TO CLASS, IN MY SLEEP. I LOVE THIS SONG. And the only song that can match that is: Child’s Play - Views Drake
I don’t care about Drake and I have no opinion about this album but TELL ME WHY THIS SONG BECAME MY LIFE. AGAIN: EVERY CAR RIDE WITH MY FRIENDS, ON THE WAY TO CLASS, IN MY SLEEP, NIGHTLY WITH MY ROOMMATE, EVERY PARTY, PROBABLY THE DAY I QUIT MY JOB I LOVE THIS SONG.
Outside - The Ride Catfish & the Bottlemen
At first 7 was my favorite song. I’m listening to it right now. It still is. But there’s something about Outside. There is something about Outside. I think because it’s so lovely but so desperate. It’s soft, longing and nostalgic, then aching, reluctant then forceful. Tortured. Regretful. Angrily apologetic. Then it starts all over again. It’s a painful memory and a remorseful giving in. I’m still trying to determine the significance of a cut-off instead of a true ending. It’s like an abrupt ending to the story, to the emotion. Like someone walked in you crying. Or invalidated your feelings.
Honorable Mention: 7. How could I not? My friend and I waited for this album for so long and finally someone put up a video of this song live. We were screaming our heads off. The last time Van cries, “And I’d beg you, but you know I’m never home / And I’d love you, but I need another second to myself” the emotion in his voice captures me. What I love about this album--and at first didn’t--is that every song is actually 2 or 3 songs. I plan on getting back to that thought.
Runnners Up: 7, Anything
Never Be Like You - Skin Flume
Another album and artist I’m sure I should listen to more of. This is one of the only songs that was playing everywhere all the time that I didn’t get sick of. Simply because it’s so beautiful. “Stop looking at me / with those eyes / like I could disappear / and you wouldn’t care why.”
Don’t Come to LA - Still Brazy YG
I’m not a YG fan and I don’t think gangs are cool. But some of his music is so hype I become a bit of a hypocrite. Not in the way that I support gang violence but that I support a gang member by bumpin his music because it’s too lit. I don’t want to but it’s SO GOOD. I love his West Coast sound.
Runners Up: Why You Always Hatin?, Twist My Fingaz
untitled 08 | 09.06.2014. - untitled unmastered. Kendrick Lamar
This song is sad in content, but it makes me want to dance. Not really out of joy, but for my goals and dreams. In “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin writes, “...Sonny was playing that piano for his life.” That’s what it reminds me of. Although I’ve been quite privileged throughout my life, this song still resonates with me.
You’re banking on good luck, you wishing for miracles You never been through shit, you’re crying hysterical You settle for everything, complain about everything
This part of the third verse struck me when I paid close attention one day. I felt so condemned. This is entirely accurate in my life. Although I have been through some things, my parents still sheltered me. I’ve never been through anything like Kendrick’s been through. I shouldn’t compare, but I know I’ve had a fairly easy life. I’m so grateful, but having things handed to me has put me in the niche of settling when I can get or deserve better. And man, if I don’t complain about everything. How do I have the audacity? Overall this song means much more than just what that verse means to me, but it’s important either way.
However, when I just listen on the surface, it makes me want to flashback to the 70s and rollerskate/dance through San Francisco.
Vowels - Single HUNNY
HUNNY is just an amazing band. Their music is melancholy but makes you want to dance. The way The Breakfast Club makes you feel.
Do You Wanna Get High - Single BAD FEELINGS
I don’t remember how I came across this song, but it’s unquestionably sexy. I quickly considered it one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I don’t even do drugs. And this isn’t even about the way it makes me feel, it’s just a well-written song in every aspect. And the raw emotion in the singer’s voice makes me love it more. And that guitar solo.
24K Magic - 24K Magic Bruno Mars
When this song dropped I said, “Bruno Mars know what I want.” I actually didn’t get too into this album and my mom thinks this is just Uptown Funk part 2, but I’m here for it. I love the 70s and it gives me a neo-70s (although others have said 80s... I guess a little bit of both). And you can’t not dance to this.
Honorable Mention: Perm. Another seriously fun song. That’s all.
That’s that. If you read through this whole thing, thank you! And thank you Nathan Zed for introducing me to some fantastic music.
And Memorable Takeaways I first read the audio version of this book, and then got the hardcover because I wanted to blog about it and wanted to be able to flip through for favorite passages. Both versions have their advantages. Since it is narrated by the author, the audio version gets my heartiest vote; her delivery is FANTASTIC! But I am also glad I got the hard copy because its design demonstrated what a truly unique book this is. The table of contents is in blocks instead of linear; the inner lining is hot pink zebra. It breaks convention in a fun way that doesn't detract from the excellent life advice contained in the book's pages.More in my blog inspired by the book: [...] Go to Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars Happily surprised! I am a HUGE Michelle Visage fan but I must admit I wasn't expecting much from her first book. However, this was pure gold! I was happily surprised at how well the book was written and by the content contained in the book. The forward by Rupaul was also a lovely look behind the curtain of their friendship. Bravo Michelle!
