I'm honestly not sure whether bboy is supposed to mean bad boy or baby boy but either way i'm voting for yoongi 🫣🫣
HELP ME SDJDFHKD we mean bboy like breakdancing!! when they were trainees (and pre-injury) yoongi showed off some breaking (starts here at 0:23)
youtube
remnants of his breaking exist in his dope ass footwork (dna, idol, etc.), and the way he hits moves sharp while also looking distinctly smooth doing it (bs&t, black swan, etc.) really his textures are so damn good.

Quick question: what do you mean when you talk about "tricking", and can you give an example?
I was just reading your Kingdom reviews (I had skimmed over it before because I like your analysis, but I had not watched Kingdom at the time) and you mentionned that some of the younger groups used "tricking" a lot instead of dancing, but I don't see it, mainly because I don't have a clear idea of what "tricking" is and I can't find a definition that helps
you are SUCH a trooper for deciding to watch kingdom in the big year of 2023, i salute you.
i'm kinda....using an old definition of tricking which is probably why looking it up didn't help. 'tricking' is a style related to breakdancing where the focus is more on elabourate flips and acrobatics rather than traditional power moves. i'm referring to the sentiment that tricking isn't/wasn't really considered 'dancing' bc it relies much more on increasing spectacle of the jumps instead of musicality, and although i personally still agree with that sentiment, tricking has evolved a lot and that might not be true anymore.
what the boys on kingdom are doing isn't actually 'real' tricking (just in the same way that a lot of kpop dance isn't 'real' dancing, it's a simpler variation), but broadly it's the best word i can come up with that gets the closest to what they were trying to do.
you can see an example here of some tricking sets, plus a bboy set that shows a bit of comparison between the two.

A-T-3 214 Nona Hendryx
Sean Combs sampled Transformation by LaBelle member (and their main songwriter) Nona Hendryx a few times - see yesterday's post for more about about tracks sampled by Puff
LaBelle split up in 1976 and Nona Hendryx embarks on a solo career but she's also writing and contributing backing vocals. Hendryx sings on Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain In The Light and 1983's Speaking In Tougues as well as touring with the band (recorded for the live album The Name Of The Band Is Talking Heads). This led to the 1981 single Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart, a cover of the The Supremes original, produced by Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison and TH's session musician Busta Jones. Then there is Material, Hendryx's performs lead vocal on the 1981 singles Bustin' Out (written with Hendryx) and It's A Holiday, in 1982 she appears on Material's sophomore album One Down. And also in 1982 Hendryx features as guest lead vocalist on the Rusty Egan, Pete Barnacle (Visage), and his brother Steve Barnacle (Night Moves) project The Cage and their cover of the T-Connection classic Do What You Wanna Do
When it came to Hendryx's second album Nona it was Material who she chose to make it with, it was a great choice and of course Bill Laswell/Material had recently made that series of hip-hop/electro 12s for Celluloid. Nona Hendryx carries on working with Bill Laswell after the Nona album
Lets start with the biggy Nona Hendryx - Transformation the queer classic that she still performs live
youtube
Nona Hendryx - Design For Living features an amazing array of women: Laurie Anderson, Tina Weymouth, Patti LaBelle, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson (of Heart), and Gina Shock (of the Go-Gos)
youtube
Nona Hendryx - Steady Action there's some incredible players on this album
youtube
Nona Hendryx - B-Boys Hendryx' nod to burgeoning bboy culture, there's an instrumental on the b-side it's not really a bboy track though which I've always thought was a shame
youtube
Nona Hendryx - Keep It Confidential was also a club hit, remixed by Nick Martinelli & David Todd
youtube
Nona Hendryx - Run For Cover

Do you think bgirls and bboys should have separate categories like in sports? Because people say they do due to physiological differences.
However I have been following breakdancing for a while and I don't see much difference in their performances? Obviously there are some moves including levitation that are incredibly hard but I don't see most b boys able to ace it either.
No. Breakdancing is an acrobatic performance art, not a sport.
In Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain, there are no separate categories for male and female acrobats. And female acrobats still get half the awards. Performance arts isn't about pure athleticism. A great acrobatic performance is about risk, showmanship, charisma, timing, and grace.

who in your opinion should win SDC this year?
oof there's so many good dancers this year but i really wanna see kyoka or zaizai in the finals. (better yet if both of them are against each other). kyoka style of hip-hop is my favourite. there's so much groove in it and it looks like she's always enjoying it which just makes me wanna start dancing with her.
zaizai is also my favourite. his skills are amazing and all the big moves he keeps on surprising with every week. not to mention one of the few bboys we've seen so far who's great at musicality.

other than the two of them probably zyko or carlton. they're both so talented.

A-T-4 028 You Can Break Dance Too
Tumblr media
1984 is the year of the breakdance craze and officially the peak year for 'learn to breakdance' records. Compilations titled Breakdance in 1984 could have anything on them, some albums contain original tracks, club or pop hits of the day, others are studio rerecords, sound-a-like albums. The funny thing is none of them have any bboy tracks on them, NO BREAKS! it's all electro for the poppers, lockers, robotics, and street dancers? at least The Rock Steady Crew album had a cover of It's Just Begun on it, it's an awful cover but the original is a bboy record. Anyway, all the music below are original compositions
The Wildstyle Club - Everybody Break (B-Boys Version) + (Up-Rock Freestyle Version) this one is from Italy. The tracks are co-written by Tony Carrasco of Klein & M.B.O. et al. The b-side features Spyder-D which is cool
youtube
Merrill & Brown – Waterfall Steven "Boogie" Brown was the other half of Snatch with Bernard Fowler (not to be confused with the no wave group Snatch). Fowler & Brown were also in the NYC Peach Boys together and The Smurfs who did Smurf For What Your Worth. The a-side of the record is narrated by Rosey Rose who it says was the choreographer at the Roxy niteclub
youtube
Merrill & Brown – Planet Rock the blurb on the sleeve reads Learn How... with this explosive package of breakdance music with vocal instructions. Plus... 50 full-color dance photos, authentic "hip-hop" music, step by step directions
youtube
Super Coper & Clarence Breakers - This Is the Way You Do the Breakdance this is a Peter Brown thing which has been reissued recently. I've gone for the 7" edit ,the full length track is almost 9 minutes. I'm thinking the bass line is from an earlier P&P associated production but this time played on a synth, it's going to drive me mad that - I know what it is, it's Gt Down by Horace Andy but that doesn't come out for another year
youtube
Mr. Robot - Dancing Like A Robot (Break My Style) following the Rock Steady Crew onto record is Mr. Robot... and here he is performing in the film Breakdance Sensation 84
youtube
All Rounder - Break Dance true to his name All Rounder gives breakdance a bajan twist
youtube
Alex And The City Crew - Breakdance this is an easy one to find. Alex And The City Crew were a crew from Holland. The a-side is filled with electro hits, Rockit is a rerecord by B.T. & The City Slickers. The b-side has original material and a few of the tracks have instructions. It's worth buying for the poster if it's still in the sleeve (see image below). There was also a video. I'll spare you the music
Tumblr media
Larry Wolff & The Streetbeaters – Breakdance out of California, no instructions just all original breakin' tracks. It was remastered in 2021! and it's on Apple Music - you can hear the appeal, nowadays it sounds close to old arcade or early console music and that has a following
youtube
The Breakers - Breakdance U.S.A. (The Original Step By Step Method!) this is The U.S. Break Express Dance Team and they narrate moves over versions of popular records from the day like Thriller and Beat It. I can't find any snippets online
Tumblr media
Finally here's a breakdancing class on Germany's ZDF
youtube
I'm off to watch some breakdance battles

Music May 2023 #6: Ten - Birthday release: October 2022 genre: Kpop
Welcome to part two of two in the 2022 Birthday Song Adventure! Look, it's been a long week and that's the best I can do right now. Pretend we're having a fun and exciting adventure? For me? ^^;
So I'd noted yesterday's "Birthday" was the second of two. By the time of this "Birthday"s official release, Ten had already previewed a version of both it and a possible choreography as part of his time co-hosting/mentoring the show Great Dance Crew in China almost six months earlier - Leader TEN special stage "Birthday" - which both showcased his power as a dancer and ended up being far tamer than the official release choreography. But we'll get back to that in a minute. Perhaps unsurprisingly, between having two completely different writing teams and being written for very different artists, the songs don't sound anything alike. So the fact that they still end up having a sameness in underlying message - you're someone special, so let's make today all about you like it's your birthday - amuses me to no end. But where Red Velvet's song is a bass-heavy, brassy bubblegum pop party song, Ten's is a much slower, sensual groove that flows smoothly between his standard tone and falsetto with the same seeming ease as his dance moves.
Ten is rather famous for being a top-tier dancer in multiple styles, including contemporary and bboying, so it's hardly a surprise that the video spends most of its run time focused on him dancing. The sensual sounds of the song are complimented with a very physical dance routine that perhaps only a handful of dancers in the world could hope to match as Ten shows off his high level of mastery over his own body. What's easily missed by people who may not know better is the number of subtle ways he's playing with gender expression, combining costume elements that are both masculine-coded and feminine-coded to create styles that are entirely Ten. The stacked bangles, the veils, but also the bolero jacket and various chains. It's a whole sensual feast and I keep getting lost in it because the way he dance is, as always, art in motion.
"Birthday" is Ten's fourth SM Station single and available now wherever you prefer to do your Kpop streaming.
*This is another instance of genre being a bit of a thing - I settled on Kpop because TEN's most known for being an SM artist, but most of his activity is with WayV, NCT's Chinese subunit (he himself is Chinese diaspora via Thailand), while the song itself is entirely in English. Which is not unheard of in Kpop! But it is still a thing, so.... Want to sponsor a song selection? You sweet angel! For the low, low price of one (1) KoFi, I'll write up the song of your choice. ANY song of your choice. Yes, even that one that's been played to death. Yes, your obscure faves too. Sponsor a current CB for the next open Music Monday slot or sponsor a throwback for a Thursday feature! DW | Twitter | Mastodon | Ko-fi | Patreon | Discord | Twitch
