#History #Ourstory #TheScottsboroBoys were nine black teenagers ages 13 to 20, who were falsely accused in 1931 of raping two white women on a train. An all white jury found the young men guilty, although the women eventually admitted to lying about the rape. The youngest of the boys was blind, and was born with syphilis... proving the boys could not have raped the women without spreading the disease. The Scottsboro Boys collectively served more than 100 years in prison. Only one of the men survived, after serving several decades in prison to later be exonerated. He died shortly after he was released from prison. (The right of blacks to serve on juries was established by their case.) #BlackHistory365🙌🏿 (at Scottsboro, Alabama) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzo2qVcHhe2/?igshid=193yz8ytxja7t

“The Play” The Scottsboro Boys The cast’s interpretation Was beyond stellar. A haiku by @freedomclay If you aren’t familiar with this important account of American history particularly, as it relates to white privilege, the inhumane treatment of Black boys and men in this country and how it continues to shape and inform the criminal “injustice” system, I implore you to become familiar. This play was painfully beautiful and the cast was simply sublime. FYI, the weekend shows are SOLD OUT!!! Maybe if enough people petition to see it, they will do some encore performances. #fctalk #thescottsboroboys #scottsboroboys #theatreraleigh #kennedytheater #575acollectionofhaikubyfreedomclay #haikupoetry #haikuoftheday #haikuofinstagram #poet #author #writer #blackpoetsmatter #blackauthorsmatter #book #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #poetrybook ##creatingsociallyresponsibleart (at Kennedy Theater) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2ZisK6hlr5/?igshid=16hqqevbjakbv

Reposted from @kishlb - #thescottsboroboys #thescottboroboys #ados #tangibles2020 The #ScottsboroBoys were nine #African American teenagers, ages 13 to 20, falsely accused in #Alabama of raping two whitewomen on a train in 1931. The landmark set of legal cases from this incident dealt with #racism and the right to a fair trial. The cases included a #lynchmob before the suspects had been indicted, all-white juries, rushed trials, and disruptive mobs. It is commonly cited as an example of a miscarriage of justice in the United States legal system. On March 25, 1931, two dozen people were 'hoboing' on a freight train traveling between #Chattanooga and #MemphisTennessee, the hoboes being an equal mix of African-Americans and #Caucasians. A group of white teenage boys saw 18-year-old #HaywoodPatterson on the train and attempted to push him off the train, claiming that it was "a white man's train".A group of whites gathered rocks and attempted to force all of the #blackmen from the train. Patterson and the other black passengers were able to ward off the group. The humiliated white teenagers jumped or were forced off the train and reported to the city's sheriff that they had been attacked by a group of #blackteenagers. The sheriff deputized a posse comitatus, stopped and searched the train at #PaintRockAlabama and arrested the black Americans. Two young white women also got off the train and accused the African American teenagers of rape. The case was first heard in #ScottsboroAlabama, in three rushed trials, in which the defendants received poor legal representation. All but 12-year-old Roy Wright were convicted of rape and sentenced to death, the common sentence in Alabama at the time for black men convicted of raping white women, even though there was medical evidence to suggest that they had not committed the crime. - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/Bt4lAWMnJSu/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=17vuvu6xxlhyl

Description: The few shows I have been fortunate enough to catch at 42nd St. Moon have always provided this enthused audience member quite the entertaining experience. Their productions of Scrooge in Love!, The Most Happy Fella, and Me and My Girl were incredibly produced and performed. This coming season for the Moon is certain to be one that will entertain, challenge, and grow its audiences who have the opportunity to see these incredible titles. And until then, find a way to support them by donating or purchasing tickets in advance; our theatre companies need as much support as possible. The Scottsboro Boys! Such an underrated musical! It deserves a revival! It would be so much more well received now due to the racial discourse climate of the country right now!

Musical Monday...err...Wednesday
With us continually on Shelter-in-Place orders (Californians, New Yorkers, the majority of the country lol), it’s easy to lose track of time/days/motivation. Thank the theatre gods for musicals, though! This week’s highlighted show is in my top three of all-time favorites. I can’t believe it was shutout at the Tony Awards, nor that it had such a short run. I wrote an open essay about it after the 2018 Tony Awards, and here it is now for a little Musical Monday highlight! Commencing to Chattanooga!
Musical Monday date: 3/25/2020
Musical: The Scottsboro Boys
Book, Music, and Lyrics: David Thompson, John Kander and Fred Ebb, and John Kander and Fred Ebb
Broadway Run: October 31, 2010 - December 12, 2010
Awards Won: None
Other: It did receive eleven nominations, including Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, dual nominations for Susan Stroman (Director, Choreographer), and Best Orchestrations for Larry Hochman, among others.
Fun Fact: The Original Broadway Cast included such theatre royalty as Joshua Henry (Haywood), John Cullum (The Interlocutor), Josh Breckenridge (Olen), James T. Lane (Ruby/Ozie), Rodney Hicks (Clarence/Preacher), and Colman Domingo (Bones/Attorney General/Clerk).
I saw a regional production at American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, with Ms. Stroman’s staging reproduced for the run, and I tell you, it was a magical, heartbreaking, inspiring evening of theatre. Even though these are dreary times we live in, it is always important to re-visit the mistakes of this country, and its leaders, so that we dare not repeat them again. The score is a rapturous work by Kander and Ebb, so grab your beverage of choice and give the cast recording a listen; you’ll tap your toes, laugh a little, and maybe even cry, all things a stellar show like this should bring out of you. Have a safe, meaningful week, y’all!
