A sewing machine should do the trick. It’s better than hand sewing it, it’ll hold more. Most standard sewing machines should have the same stitch, it’s just a matter of looking for it. If you don’t have one, they can fix it at dry cleaners usually and it shouldn’t cost too…

"Yes, but I mean it." Carlos is using his parent voice, soft and respectful. "I want to go to college."

The words hang before them in the air like glittering ice, like water flung from a falling glass frozen. A fiasco paused. These sounds are nothing new, no desire he has not voiced already but there's something very sincere in his tone that makes his father stir.

Carlos shuts up. He tries again at dinner.
