‘Highbone Theater’ by Joe Daly

Where does this amateurish reviewer even know where to begin, when used to pithy scribbles about photocopied magazines that usually go ne’er past 24 pages in length, by tackling such a book by Joe Daly; namely, ‘Highbone Theater’?  I guess this reviewer just has to write about how the book makes him FEEL.  Joe Daly is a bad ass cartoonist and we owe a debt of gratitude to Fantagraphics for consistently making his work available to us.  I don’t know what sales are, I don’t know what the story is, but to have gotten a steady flow of monstrous, I mean MONSTROUS, tomes of Joe Daly work is no small feat for an independent publisher.  Daly’s books are huge and this one is the biggest, clocking in at almost 600 pages.  His previous series, ‘Dungeon Quest’, which I hope has not been abandoned, is of similar size at three volumes so this one is an ambitious undertaking indeed. 

The story is a much more personal one than any of Daly’s previous works, which rely on usual tropes of satire and plays upon frivolous ‘hang out’ culture of the millenials that many of this era’s mid-thirties and somewhat reclusive comix makers always return to in their form.  This book is about ‘hang out’ folks but it doesn’t rely on the comedy and the surreal, ‘this could never actually happen’, stuff that a book like Dungeon Quest explores in depth and adventure; this book gives us a real feel of the soul of a maligned and questing young man who doesn’t quite fit in and doesn’t quite know how to express.  I am assuming this may be one of Daly’s more autobiographical works because he and the main character both have a beard. 

Taking a more spartan approach, perhaps at realizing that a 600 page graphic novel must be to some extent cranked out lest it take 20 years to complete, Daly has pulled back the hyper detail and extensive inking of scenery that one saw in Dungeon Quest in favor of a clean cartoon line and minimal and starkly graphic panels per page that occasionally are colored but most often in black and white.  Its almost as if Daly is incorporating a little bit of Chester Brown in his method, really relying on character and dialogue and letting that be in the forefront and backed by a subtle reminder that he is in fact a drawing bad ass.  Being a fan I was off-put just for the first 20 pages or so, disappointed that this wasn’t a ‘Dungeon Quest’ style get-lost-in-the-ink style of book where one could pore over each page for days on end but that frivolous and convenient whim quickly gave way to the fact that this is Daly’s best fucking work yet and a goddamn powerhouse of a comic book.  Barely anyone is capable of making a book like this any more, such a solid and well thought out and fully molded piece of fiction; with all these years of drawing awesome comics Daly has emerged out of that practice a true screenwriter of the finest form. 

I’ve read interviews where Daly says that his books are minimally, only 20-30% infused with his South African culture, upbringing, and experience but I don’t buy it.  I don’t know his life or his style of living but his books are so god damn FOREIGN.  But not foreign as in “god damn I can’t understand this shit” but foreign as in exotic and teeming with mystery and its obvious that theres layer upon layer upon layer of validity and harmony and this is happening in a place I know nothing about and will probably never get to so thank you, sir, for making it available to us.  And thanks to Fantagraphics to publishing it.

Jason (Far cry 5)

Okey the previous answers are here(Resistance) and here(Sheriff Dept.) now for the last bracket the Seeds.I think i’ve said this before but i’ll do it again: The Seeds are as obsessed with Jason as much he is with them. It’s a mess of emotions really, there are all these dialogues of the Seeds trying to convince the deputy to join them, these sad stories are not to justify themselves, but to explain the why, logical conclusions for them. The thing is Jason does the same thing, he sees hurting but also tries to explain why, despite past trauma, you can choose to be good. Its about choosing, it's like talking to a wall from both ends and I LOVE IT.  (traumatized people talking about their own coping mechanisms in theathers: SOON) At the end of the day, well, let’s say they all manage :)c

Cyrus (Fallout 4)

Nick, Piper and Nat, Ellie Perkins, Codsword, AdA, Long oldfellow and Danse (its complicated.) When he woke up from the cryo sleep, he first stumbled across the Cambridge police station, Cyrus was a vet back on the old days so it was kind of obvious he decided to gravitate towards the BOS, because it a body of power he atleast kind of knows. After so much time and seeing no progress towards finding Shawn on the BOS he decided to request a leave and go to Diamond City that's when he meets Nick :) Cyrus dropped from the BOS (Making the relationship with Danse complicated, the tension was high and somethings shouldn’t been said) and he started to work along side Nick, as his ‘Watson’ and a mechanic always comes handy when you’re a robot :P

Quinn (Misc)

Quinn has a lot of trust issues. One of the biggest one was when his ex (not properly ex neither, becuase they havent said or formalized anything) told him he was gonna write everyday but never did, not a single card, so when he finally came out and was there with a bouquet Quinn was understandably furious. There’s more to those cards but lets leave it like that :)c His time on prison change him a LOT. He needs a ton of reassureance that he is indeed wanted and theres, indeed, a ton of people that do want him :3c Quinn just needs time. He has his found family eventually, but its more ocs so <:’P its from a personal project I plan down the line, be patient with me!

Alisher (COD:Cold War)

:) He has... Let’s say a few. When you’re a spy is hard to have trust on others and yet also be ready to put your life on other people’s hands. He man he trusted the most was Perseus. Same reason why he trusted Adler so quick too, on this mind both took the same place and role, someone to -actually- trust. Both leading him anywhere. And yet Adler betray him, although Alisher later clicked the dots together, while he was high on pain meds, it still hurted. It changed him forever and its the reason why he is so paranoid and reclusive. He has a lot of endings :P But I think my favorite its that one where he becomes a Wrangler (cryptographer) and Sovietologist for MI6. He has narrow contact with people, Parker being one of the few to know where and that he actually lives. It could be said he got cozy with Parker for a time, but nothing serious at the end.

Alban (GreedFall)

Alban always consider two people his family. And that is Constantine and his own mother. He was raised as a reclusive man, for his heritage and mark and in a way to be the streak contrast of Constantine’s flaws, the bar to pass and Constantine in turn was a reminder of what not to be, always chastized for minor things and the king, never made an exeption for his own son. Reason why Alban stepped up to always be there to protect him, the king listens to him. So, when he went to the isle and a whole new world open to him, he was like a newborn, very clumsy, he even doubted sometimes, but he also growed. He developed very strong relationships with his companions, except with Petrus, which he sees as a means to some ends. Vasco and Alban had a very sweet toothing romance, tho.

Carter Shepard (Mass Effect Series)

Carter was the daughter of very sucessful alliance members, her mother always put her on a high standard. It affected her and their relationship in many ways. So Carter always tries her best, always be the bigger person and just role model, the thing is when she actually had to be on ground (Akuze from all places) It changed her world view. Her relationship with her crew went from ‘I trust you because both of our lives depend on it’ to caring beyond just work. She can let her guard down from time-to-time, not everything is work. She developed feelings with Miranda over Mass Effect 2 but acted over them after the event of ME3 when both where left stranded on earth.
