Hello everyone and welcome to the start of the weekend - whoop!! These are five glorious paperbacks that I bought on an excellent catch-up and bookshop trip with @keeperofpages 😍 The Remainder is translated by Sophie Hughes and is set in Santiago, Chile. The city is covered in ash. Three children of ex-militants are facing a past they can neither remember or forget. Phenotypes is translated by Daniel Hahn and set in Brazil. It’s the story of two brothers, Federico and Lorenço, one of whom “passes” as white and has been able to avoid the worst of the racism Brazil has to offer. The author proves the old wound of race in Brazil, and in particular the loss of a black identity independent from the history of slavery. I’m still to read anything from Benjamin Myers but here is Beastings, whose cover screamed at me to buy it! This is an American Southern Gothic tale set against the violent beauty of Northern England, Beastings is a sparse and poetic novel about morality, motherhood and corruption. I’m hoping to read The Rooftop, translated by Annie McDermott with @keeperofpages It’s a claustrophobic novel about freedom, and also about fear, violence, motherhood and loss. Finally An Orphan World, translated by Juana Alcock and Sophie Hughes is a novel about poverty, and the resourceful ways in which people manage to confront it. At the same time it is a reflection about the body as a space of pleasure and violence. Perhaps above all else, it is a brutally honest love letter between a father and son. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Bast leaned closer until their faces were mere inches apart, his eyes gonewhite as opal, white as a full-bellied moon.

“You are an educated man. You know there are no such things as demons.” Bast smiled a terrible smile. “There is only my kind.” Bast leaned closer still, Chronicler smelled flowers on his breath.

“You are not wise enough to fear me as I should be feared. You do not know the first note of the music that moves me.”

Act 2 Coming Out On Itch Tomorrow

After around 6 months of passionate development, the next piece of the puzzle finally drops tomorrow on itch.io

Act 2 (Including all Act 1 content) will have, 86k words, a few mysterious new characters to meet, and dozens of routes to explore and secrets to unravel.

It will give more questions than answers, in typical The Remainder fashion.

Pricing

Since Act 3 will be the conclusion of the saga, we will price Act 2 as the full game at $20. Those who buy it now will support us to finish the game. 

If you’ve already paid for any The Remainder content on itch, thank you so much. Anyone who’s paid at least $20 for the itch version will get a free update to the full game when it comes out as well as the Fanpack which includes a bunch of bonus material like OST and Art+Lore book.

When the full game is released, the fanpack will be priced separately, on top of the $20. This is our way of thanking our early supporters.

Steam 

Act 2 will release some time around October on Steam, it will get achievements and any updates, fixes and refinements we add from now until then.

Act 1 will remain free.

I’ve been doing some studies, developing a style to use for future projects.

Some of this might be seen in The Remainder.

Next up I’ll post the next stage of this process including some full body studesigns(That’s study-turned-designs) of Magi(that’s plural for magus).

So, I was planning to do a post today of books I had read and loved from South America (for next month’s #readtheworld21 challenge), but when I went to pull them I realized I had lent away too many of my faves. So instead, the stack of books I will be pulling from for my September TBR. Five books of fiction from South America, four of which are #womenintranslation! One book of Latin American history. Two from Chile, one from Brazil, two from Argentina (Cortázar spent a lot of time in Europe, as well). Two of these books are new to my shelves, the rest have been there for a while. Of course I want to read all of them! But I will probably be pleased if I finish even one. Which of these do you think should be at the top of my list? . . I got this journal entry quite late. It was huge shift in overall mood of the game for me... it was one of the rare moments we get to know something more about them. I just wish we could read more about Ilar's exploits as curious travelling mage :')

We’ve just released the demo! (ver 0.02).

This being our first game, and the beginning of releasing playable content into the wild, we wanted to keep it somewhat small and cozy, without as much marketing fuss as we could have done.

If you’re reading this, you’ll be among a small handful of people who’re playing the game in its first incarnation. We think it’s a special thing because we truly believe The Remainder is something at least a bit interesting and will only get better with time If you play it at all, that would already be cool, but if you decide to tell us what you think about it, and potentially help us improve the game, that’d be cooler still, and you’ll have our gratitude. 

Also, do have fun! We hope you’re here because you’re genuinely intrigued by what you see and that you get some enjoyment out of the story.
