what do you think the "Please forgive me and Purple" mean? considering the Miku (and Teto!) version it could be stand as a prayer like "Amen" yk? I always thought it said "please forgive me Empurple" as if "Empurple" was an entity
please forgive me and "purple", the wavering me dyed purple
So empurple means "to become purple", hence why in the official english lyrics "empurple" is replaced by "dyed purple". I think the 'and "purple" ' in the lyrics is representative of Mafuyu's emotional state, as in, her true and genuine self waiting to be found/freed. The real Mafuyu - her image color is purple after all. I think to understand what it means to Mafuyu at least, we need to look at the SEKAI ver instead of Harumaki Gohan's version. It was written for Mafuyu, so most likely Mafuyu is the origin of this lyric, which was then put into a different context with Harumaki Gohan's MV.
In the first verse where Mafuyu sings "the real me feeling stuck in my throat is empurpling", which gives us an image of Mafuyu struggling to open up about her feelings. The longer she feels stuck and keeps everything in the more purple it becomes. This is confirmation enough that the "purple" that she's asking for forgiveness for is just the things she kept hidden from her parents. It makes a lot more sense if you consider that this is the event where she starts to reconnect with her dad, and truly starts to trust him and open up to him. You don't have to read past this part, I have answered the question.
I think it's worth mentioning as well that we see these red and blue strings throughout the entire MV, obviously red and blue being the colors that make purple. We'll get more on what red and blue mean in the context of this song later, but just briefly I want to talk about this specific frame here. Strings have been a recurring motif for Mafuyu from as early as her first ever event, Captive Marionette. In that event, Mafuyu likens herself to a marionette doll, with the way she feels completely under the control of her mother and like she's being used for her mother's own performance (that will get its own analysis in due time). Her card for that event shows her dressed as a marionette doll bound by strings.
The strings come back for her aptly titled My True Feelings card in her fourth event, Saying Goodbye to my Masked Self. She's seen cutting the threads here, symbolising how she ran away from home and effectively cut off her mother. And now back to Empurple. In the opening shot of the MV, we see red and blue strings wrapped around Mafuyu's ankles, binding her to something offscreen. Behind her, towards the area she's being bound to, we see a bunny plushie and some apple slices cut into the shape of rabbits.
These are taken from her Memories of Warm Affection card, which shows kid Mafuyu being taken care of by her mother. The event Empurple was commissioned for, Reeling in the Lights, heavily calls back to Mirage of Lights, Mafuyu's second event and the event this card originates from. It's pretty clear here that Mafuyu is being bound to her mother, and her memories of her mother's care for her when she was younger. Continuing on with the actual song:
The next part of interest is the first pre-chorus. The first shot here is one of a child's hand holding an adult's, obviously meant to be Mafuyu and her father based on the card for this event (below). The next shot is of kid Mafuyu's eye, much brighter and with a far lighter blue color. These two shots are accompanied by the lyrics "Try to open my left hand and have a look? It's still embedded with blue eyes." (It is in fact her left hand that she uses to hold her dad's hand in her card). Now here's where we get to the meaning of blue in the song and MV.
The blue here is meant to represent Mafuyu's younger self. Her more genuine and innocent self before her parents started setting more pressure and expectations on her. The first line of the chorus is "If I saw that, would I be surprised", which I think perfectly encapsulates how Mafuyu feels when looking back at her childhood. In both of the "Lights" events focusing on her relationship with her parents, she looks back on these childhood memories that are so distant from her reality that she'd almost forgotten them, and yeah, it's surprising how different her life was and how she was when she was younger. The second line of the chorus "I just want to live once with genuine feelings only" plays into this too. And then we come back to the "purple".
If we hold hands, it would be great if you could understand, Please, Forgive me and "Purple", The wavering me is Empurpled
It's very clear here that this is all directed towards her father. In the event, we flash back to Mafuyu's dad comforting her during a thunderstorm, and although its one of her only memories of him because he was very absent from her childhood, she realises that she associates him with being a source of support, and decides to tell him more about how she really feels. She affirms her trust and comfort by holding his hand. In the context of the song, she's asking him to forgive her and all the things she's been hiding over the years.
The next point of interest is the second prechorus, which is very similar to the first, only this time, it's about the "red". Once again we get a shot of Mafuyu holding her dad's hand, only this time it shows the present day, and Mafuyu is using her right hand this time. Like how the first prechorus mentioned her left hand, this one mentions her right, with the precise lyric being "Try to open my right hand and have a look? You'll find a crimson sky.". An aside, her eyes aren't crimson here, I won't deny that, but they can't exactly just give Mafuyu red eyes, so for the sake of this analysis, pretend she has red eyes or something or that crimson and indigo are the same thing. We see the shot of teenage Mafuyu's dull indigo right eye over the lyric about the crimson sky, a direct contrast to her bright blue eyes from the first prechorus.
The "red" in this song references Mafuyu's current state of being. A girl struggling with expectations and appearances to the point she lost her sense of self, her emotions, and her will to live. All of this has been kept well hidden until the mask finally came off in her previous event, and now her father is seeing this completely new side to his daughter too. It's far more impactful though with the knowledge that he was an absent father, and never really got to spend any time with Mafuyu due to his work schedule. Like he never really knew Mafuyu to begin with in some ways. All he knew of her would've mainly come from how other people saw her, which is what caused this in the first place.
The first line of the second chorus is "If you see it, will you be shocked?", obviously referring to how she has her worries about telling her dad these things about herself. He is, in fact. shocked by the situation. He's completely stunned when he finds out Mafuyu can't even taste the food he's been buying her back in The Tone Played on that Day, because this is nothing like the Mafuyu he thought he knew. At that point he knew Mafuyu had been struggling, but he had no idea of the severity of it because Mafuyu had been holding these things in her throat.
The second line interests me quite a lot though. "The crimson sky is so beautiful, yet you'll never know." I've been trying to think about what quite we're looking at here for a few minutes, but here's what I've interpreted it as. Where we are right now in the story, the crimson is the closest we can get to the real Mafuyu. It's her true self as much as her current emotional state will allow, and obviously there's some beauty in that. It's far more authentic that the manufactured facade of blue that she'd been putting up for the previous few years. "yet you'll never know" could refer to three things in my opinion. Number one: Mafuyu's unwillingness to open up before the end of this event. No one gets to know her real self, because she won't let people see it. Number two: Mafuyu's father missed out on a huge amount of her childhood, and missed many of the signs that Mafuyu was going through mental anguish. Obviously, this ends up being remedied at the end of the event. And number three: This is aimed at Mafuyu's mother, who doesn't understand how this has happened and refuses to accept that this is who Mafuyu is.
And the last part of this chorus is "If we hold hands, it would be so warm... Please, Forgive me and 'Purple' ". Warmth is something that comes up a lot in Mafuyu's story. It's a sign of comfort for her. Her mother, or even just her presence, physical or not, is consistently described as cold and icy. It's unnerving and chilling. However, being around Niigo, holding their hands, brings her an unfamiliar warmth. Mafuyu associates this warmth with how she felt around her mother when she was younger. She can't quite place it, but it's a feeling of safety, comfort, and happiness. As I mentioned earlier, although Mafuyu has very few memories of her father from when she was a kid, what she does remember of him brings her that same feeling of warmth. And it's different to how her memories of her mother give her warmth, because he's still here, now, trying to help her.
I particularly like the bridge and final chorus too. There isn't much to say about the MV here aside from the fact it gets darker during the bridge, connecting with the "crimson sky that was hidden at all costs" lyric. Mafuyu is the last person to sing, and as expected it's darkest then, though it does get brighter as she finishes her line, probably because she's going to be more open from now on. I like the "still tinged with blue, these eyes" part too, because obviously, her happier and genuine "blue" side is still a part of her, she's just lost sight of the genuine manifestation of it over time. Blue and red make purple after all, and you can't get the true purple form of Mafuyu without combining her blue and red sides.
The final chorus refers to the event story again. "The important things, I'll keep them with me" obviously references the memories of her dad comforting her that she never let go of, "Inside my body, something is still broken" because Mafuyu isn't fully healed yet, and "If we hold hands, please fix me" because she is going to let her dad help her from now. Them holding hands was a sign of trust between the two of them, and a sign that Mafuyu is going to be genuine with her father because it is what's best for her, for real this time. He says in the event that he's been looking into getting her seen by a hospital (therapy), so he truly does want to help her.
The MV ends with the same shot as we started with, only this time, the camera has moved over to the left a bit, fitting with the fact that her "blue" childhood happiness was said to be on the left. The strings binding her also fade away, and allow her to step towards a new person whose feet have appeared in the frame, who is obviously meant to be her dad (Mr Asahina canonically wears sliders). We're finally seeing Mafuyu make some significant progress following her running away. Even after she ran away, she was still bound to her mother, and the warm memories she had of her, but now she's found someone who can give her that support and love for her genuine self in the present. She's freeing herself little by little.
#i saw this as an opportunity to vaguely use my media gcse for its intended purpose. didnt even mention any theory but wtv. hope this is ok#asks#songs#summer vacation analysis 1/4 (?) i'm gonna tentatively say 4#anyway mr asahina's a good character or something like that and his relationship with mafuyu is incredibly well written and interesting

Dinner Bell the Mafuyu song ever …
Starting off — “warmth” is a word Mafuyu uses a lot in the story, the physical feeling she associates with love, though she doesn’t quite know that it’s love yet. However, as a child, she still understood and could experience emotions, and in memories, she associates the positive ones, again, with warmth. In the events Mirage of Lights and Guiding a Lost Child to What Lies Beyond (+ the cards associated with them), she has memories of her childhood and feelings associated with warmth/cold, specifically in relation to her mother. Mafuyu wants to go back to the way she was a child; she wants to understand what she’s lost sight of now but had when she was little.
No big analysis or connections for this one, just Hey Haha That’s So My Favorite Character Lyrics HEY!!!! Deep down, Mafuyu wishes that her parents would love her for herself, and not her accomplishments. She doesn’t want to be their good girl, their smart girl, their prodigy doctor-in-training daughter who they can brag about — she doesn’t want to need to be special to be loved. She just wants to be loved like everyone else.
(Left: Dinner Bell, right: Tricologe)
I just found these similarities really interesting. I think Tricologe is a song that Kanade wrote to be from the perspective of someone who is both like her (self sacrificial, the outside “savior”) and another person who is like Mafuyu (trapped in a life that is slowly “killing” her, the imprisoned “saved”); and these lyrics are clearly about the latter — Mafuyu even sings them in the group cover of the song. I think that both songs, “eating” refers to the state of…being, though that’s somewhat vaguely put. More specifically, eating something you don’t want to means being a self that is not truly you — Mafuyu is “fed” the unwanted expectations other people put on her, which she then mindlessly accepts and tries to fulfill. Similarly, the protagonist of Dinner Bell has “things [they don’t] want to eat” — I think this is a similar setup to Mafuyu if the previous lyrics about being “special” are any indication of their relationship with their family. I believe that the protagonist has run away from home in some capacity because of a bad familial life, and even though they still crave love and acceptance that can only be given if they live up to their family’s wishes, they know that this will “kill” them if they keep going with that. Conversely, Mafuyu already became “a corpse” due to her accepting her parent’s expectations of her and focusing her whole life on living up to them.
いい子 (good child/girl) THE ULTIMATE MAFUYU REFERENCE! Also — “The rule mom … set / I lost it by the roadside”:
Both of these cards (arguably both “by the roadside” but either way close enough) are moments where Mafuyu’s illusion/high opinion of her mother shift. First, Mizuki telling her that it’s okay to run away sometimes: Mafuyu realizes she’s not obligated to put up with this, she can put herself first — something her parents have taught her, where her consciously or not, is bad and selfish. Second, (IMO) when the image of her mother truly shatters — it’s revealed to her that that her mother doesn’t care about Mafuyu the way she’s has convinced herself she does.
Alright so I probably should have put this earlier but this is primarily a Mafuyu analysis not a Dinner Bell one so you’ll just have to deal with me here. I believe the “dinner bell” in this song represents being loved and wanted by someone, and the singer so deeply desires that — to be called to enjoy a meal because they are wanted there, to be surrounded by warmth and to be loved enough to be called back home. Mafuyu craves unconditional love and acceptance from her parents, but she only gets love on the basis of her performance in school, as well as her performance as a Person, as a “good girl”. She so desperately wants to be called by the dinner bell - to be wanted no matter if she strays from her family’s wishes, to be loved even if she’s not always with them, following them and their plans for her. She…doesn’t get that. Not from her parents, that is.
In the event Mirage of lights, Mafuyu gets sick (with a fever, woah haha that was in the song) and stays at Kanade’s house to recover. She has memories of a similar experience when she was a child, when her mother took care of her, and she makes the same request both times — to not be left alone.
Both times, the caretaker in the situation stays with her and holds her hand. But Mafuyu’s grown up now and she doesn’t get that kind of kindness and care from her parents — her mom doesn’t even notice she’s not doing well and she has to go to school sick, sacrificing the time she wants to spend on her own tasks to help other people. Her parents, especially her mom, have somewhat stopped seeing her as a Whole Person — instead, she’s their perfect little girl, a straight-A student who helps everyone around her and has a bright future. Anything outside of that is foreign to them. Mafuyu probably won’t ever get what she wants — unconditional love — from her parents. But she will get it from her friends, her true family. And that’s more than enough, I think.
#talks#mafuyu#analysis#<- double welling analysis of a vocaloid song and My Fucking Guy#wielding*. help.#I woke up in a cold sweat at 3 am and my brain was telling me to write this and also tumblr crashed twice and didn’t save for me so LOL …#This shit is written like my English essays god I should just ask my teachers to compare everything I have to analyze to vocaloid music#This also falls into my greater insanity about food as a representation of love But we shan’t get into that#Just know . Op, i want to add on to this because I always had a similar way of Mafuyu meeting MizuSis (taking your MizuSis name for continuity)
TL;DR — I want Mafuyu to not be an only child and want said sibling to beat Mafuyu's mom in a court battle for custody of Mafuyu, maybe get a new PjSK unit with older sibling NPC's and two of their buds.
Mizane comes home for a long bisit / graduated so she doesn't have to live in overseas land anymore
Mizuki gets their Mafuyu sleepover and Mizane is like "Damn you remind me of this music major friend of mine" ; absolutely doesn't fall for the good girl thing
Nightcord is meeting up near Vivid Street the next day so Mizane tags along to meet everyone else.
Ena and Kanade are watching this super sick performer sing and even outsing Kohane for one song they both know
The non-gender conformers and their chaperone approach and listen after Kohane runs off for practice
Person performing sings two more songs, one in English and one in German. Both are covers of Japanese originating songs, and you can tell cause it doesn't scan quite perfectly, but still sounds amazing.
After performer sees Mizane and shuffles over, the super happy and excited face now almost void of all emotions (like a certain other black-purple haired person nearby) ((yes performer's hair is black-purple)) (((if you didn't know, Mafuyu technically has black hair, like ichika. Similarly to how like Kanade has white or silver hair not blue.)))
Mizane introduces the gang to the performer, who goes by Yuki.
Yuki takes one look at Mafuyu, hears just one word of the good girl persona and stops Mafuyu.
Mizane sorta confirms to Yuki with interjections by Niigo (minus Mafuyu) about the situation
Yuki just goes “so. The [more child friendly word for bitch that has the save vibe] is still that strict, huh...? I thought that was just for the failure kid she had before Mafuyu."
Niigo is all UNDERSTANDABLY CONFUSED AS SHIT
A few events later with way more Niigo and Mizane+Yuki bonding, Mizuki and Mizane find Yuki arguing with Mafuyu's mother ((we'll call her Madoka simply because i dont wanna type more than I need to))
Yuki is being called "a burden", "a terror" and other rather hurtful things by Madoka, hitting back with passive aggressive things based in truth.
Eventually, Madoka says if Yuki sees Mafuyu to not corrupt her and stay away, saying "my daughter doesn't need more terror in her life."
Yuki instantly hits back with "Follow your own advice then. Cause you're right, Mafuyu doesn't need more terror in their life and that's all you are.”
Madoka storms away, past the Akiyama's, grumbling about a "failure daughter".
Mizane just goes “so THAT'S why Yuki was wanting to know how much it would be to go to court here now. Welp."
Mizuki (And Kanade cause they were meeting up, so she appeared just in time for Yuki to walk over after seeing them) learn that Yuki is way about 15 years older than Mafuyu and is Mafuyu's disowned older sibling.
Why were they disowned? Cause music was the only thing that they were able to get any work done with and was good at, but because their mid grades were combined with "music is a distraction" despite being good at it, so because that was a bad influence on the baby Mafu, they were kicked out and legally disowned.
Yuki then legally changed their name from a "gross boring name" to Yuki.
And then it becomes Mizane, Yuki, Kanade, Ena and Mizuki vs Madoka as Yuki+Mizane go to court to prove child abuse and Niigo try to help Mafuyu adjust to the fact that she has a caring loving big sibling who wants Mafuyu to pursue music if she wants, or cut her hair if she wants or yadda yadda. Mostly Kanade, since its after the 3rd Anni and Mafuyu lives with Kanade.
Bonus stuff under the break
Bonus where Mizane pulls up old friends from the Legal Department of their overseas uni and we get a new unit with those four because Rhythm Games are known for after a while adding more units and even PjSK has set up for a few new ones that I person wanna see. Not sure what it would be called, probably something to sort of mirror Nightcord's darker vibe with a light one. Maybe Chasing Dawn at 1 or something like that. As a treat, they get only Miku to start and its a sekai originating only from Yuki. (Kind of a mirror to the Empty Sekai and Nightcord's story, but with a more positive outlook on how being abused can rarely do.)
As a small note here, while almost every case of mental abuse tends to end in a form of PTSD or trauma that hinders the victim after leaving, it can sometimes actually have the opposite effect. The victim can sometimes emerge from the abuse with a more knightly complex or even sometimes a hero one because they want to protect others from it. Essentially, different trauma responses.
Nightcord seems to focus on how getting out of negative trauma responses ((overmasking, excessive people pleasing, etc.)) are very strong and hard to break. The mirror side of that would be how ones that can be positive outwardly can be just as bad and soul breaking as the negative ones. And how its just as bad to get out of those ones. Or how you can turn something that seems never ending dark into something with a sliver of light. Things like that are what I'm calling "mirroring Nightcord."
The order of VS that would arrive through events would be reverse of Nightcord's (which was Rin, MEIKO, Luka, Len, KAITO) [KAITO, Len, Luka, MEIKO then lastly Rin] with only Miku to start off with as well for them. UNLESS they tried something new with the unit, in which I would like to suggest KaiMeiLuka as a starter pack and as Yuki becomes closer to being the legal guardian of Mafuyu, the three "adopt" Miku, Rin and Len.
Pjsekai scenario [feel free to rb with ur own ideas and thoughts]
Mizukis sister comes back for a while to visit
To finish the Trifecta of sleepovers, mizuki and mafuyu were gonna hang out
Mizukis sister[who ill call mizane from this point on] is curious abt mafuyu and basically immediately sees through her persona
She connects it to mizuki and how they were
Mizuki gets gifts from their sister
At one point mafuyu begins to get irritated as her hair keeps getting in the way, mizuki offers to cut it but mafuyu says no cuz mother would get mad
Insert mizuki annoying her with several ideas on how to come up with an excuse to cut it
Mizane wonders if mafuyu and mizuki are more alike than they think [perhaps the real transgenders were the friends we made along the way]
And Yada Yada Mayne mafuyu gets a haircut maybe they don't idk but the summary of this would be mafuyu is transmasc

That chord made the dusty air vibrate and their eardrums vibrate. There arises ... our music. Mafuyu's voice penetrates deep to stay there. It's a dangerous weapon, it's crazy. Both the guitar that he loved so much, and the basketball that he enjoyed so much, have already lost their charm in the monotonous life of Ritsuka Uenoyama. Until one day, he meets Mafuyu. A shy boy, with an old guitar in his arms. Uenoyama felt drowned out by the tireless Mafuyu, who grew fond of him ever since he tuned his guitar strings. But she heard him sing ... and his voice penetrated to the depths of her being.

OMG GUSARI!!! just.. her way of characterizing them and just her art like she has incredible talent with story-telling and pacing and a wonderful way of putting everything together with a metaphor (whether the metaphor is something obvious or not). like she has this sense of "settled unsettledness" with her writing if that makes sense. if you haven't read the matsuhana oneshot as well - i highly recommend it!!!! idk if you read given either but the moment mafuyu sings for uenoyama is VISCERAL
HHHHHHH I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS ABOUT GUSARI TTTTTT i literally start gnawing on the nearest possible object whenever i think of her doujins, like literally. i just. HHHHH the way she writes is so quiet...like i like how the love she has in her stories is not just like,, its powerful, but in a quiet, subtle, mundane way. it feels real. it feels Raw.
there's that one doujin where its about how like, UGH there's so many but there's that one doujin about iwaoi's past and how oikawa had to go into the hospital and iwaizumi was blaming himself and there's that line about how tooru & hajime's names were like,,,they had a one character difference or smth?? and how their moms wanted to symbolize that iwaizumi completed oikawa i just UGGGHHJDJSKFKKS i read all of the gusari doujin translations when i was home alone and i have never Wailed so viscerally in my life before 😐
AND YEAH I TOTALLY AGREE HER METAPHORS ARE JUST 🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌 HHH i don't think i've read the matsuhana oneshot, i think i didn't come across it when i was doing my gusari binge :( i'll look for it in the morning tho!! matsuhana just...matsuhana <3
DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON GIVEN I JUST 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 given has me by a chokehold and Wont Let Go... i Hate to be one of Those People but i just think the given manga is better ,,, like dont get me wrong the anime is so good Esp With That Soundtrack <3 but after watching the movie i'm kinda sad they took away the complexity of the overlapping storylines of mafuyu letting go + ugetsu letting go too,,,like they were such good foils for each other so im kinda just 🥲 (+++ THOSE PANELS WHERE MAFUYU GETS REMINDED OF YUKI JUST MAKE ME AAAUUGHHHHHHDHSHHDJWJEJ LITERALLY K WORD ME IT WOULD HURT LESS I THINK .) yeah the ugetsu plotline and everything surrounding that arc is just so. [clenches fist and cries a little.]
also i Love the set up currently with mafuyu's two childhood friends?? i forgot their names but 😭 once again i love how every one of gusari's relationships is depicted with so many layers and it just feels so Raw And Real . i think she's really mastered the art of depicting beauty, in its happiness and its pain.
#HELP YOU KNOW WHAT GETS ME REALLY CRYING#THAT 4 PART STRAWBERRY SWING BONUS CHAPTER THING#MYYTTT GOOOOODDDDD#i will never shut up about it jfc i will keep crying until the ends of the earth#got mail 🎐#anon

Altered-Karma’s Year in Review
It’s late because work and traveling and stuff has kinda wiped me out, but at long last, here’s a list of all the stuff I published last year! Starts in May with the TDDK BB:
plants & stars: TDDK for the TDDK BB 2019: Magician Deku shows up on Shouto’s father’s World Famous Talent Show, and proceeds to rock the lonely judge’s world. T, 29.4k, BnHA
brittle bones and brittle hearts: Inspired by some art here on tumblr: Danny meets a strange teenager in the woods, and hears something that he's needed to hear. G, 2.1k, BnHAxDP crossover
bees love their flowers (and their flower boys): Written on an adrenaline high to claim my rightful place as the first author in the tag for a crackship rarepair my server/guild spawned: Bee Movie AU Natshig :3 G, 393 words, BnHA
Country Boy Take Me Home: TDDK Oneshot just because: Shouto learns something interesting about Izuku. And about a hobby Izuku picked up (it’s the guitar). T, 1.5k, BnHA
corruptio optimi pessima (the fall of goodness is the worst fall): For want of a Nail fix it fic for Ardyn and Luna, who both deserved better, but lbr, everyone in FFXV deserved better. T, 13.3k, FFXV
what if all the things I'd done (were attempts at earning love): TenChako feels smacked me outta nowhere, right around when I first started playing SV, so cottagecore happened!: Ochako dreams of one day owning a cottage out in the woods. Tenya dreams of Ochako being happy. Thankfully, Tenya's rich enough to make things work. Now if only he could keep his heart under wraps and his mouth shut, life would be great. Instead, he has an unrequited love a mile wide to contend with as he and Ochako move in together. G, 17.5k, BnHA
Light your fire: Triple TDDK BDay gift for three of my friends, this time Lighthousecore: Shouto lives in a lighthouse, and one day, on one of his frequent ventures, he sings a song to a seal, and gets the companion of a lifetime. T, 8.5k, BnHA
Hold your onions (it's time for honey): Second Crackfic, TDDK but with Shrek and Bee Movie flavors because I’m a bastard. T, 760 words, BnHA
an eternity of yeses: Birthday fic for my friend Felix, TodoShinDeku which needs more love: Hitoshi has withdrawn from human society and lives separate from everyone else. Two paranormal investigators wander into his house uninvited, and offer him an invitation of their own. M, nothing explicit but implied, 4.8k, BnHA
Paw Prints at Midnight: Nother BDay fic! TDDK, and I ended up with an accidental Halloween them between this one and the fics on either side of it:Park Rangers Shouto and Izuku live out in the middle of the forest managing their assigned park. Shouto also happens to adore conspiracy theories, and tries to convince Izuku that the occasional messes that follow the full moon are the result of Bigfoot. Izuku just hopes Shouto doesn't discover the truth: that once a month, Izuku is wolfier than usual, and haunts the forest at night. T, 2.4k, BnHA
The best lack conviction (while the worst are full of passionate intensity): Currently ongoing (I’m editing the next chapters now I promise!) Villain!AU, which I had a lot of fun writing even though I joined late as a pinch hitter: Vigilante Pluto gets a tip that a villain has infiltrated UA's prestigious course, and in spite of all the odds against him and everyone telling him otherwise, Midoriya Izuku joins the course to try and prevent an impossible disaster: the death of All Might. T, 29k as of this post, BnHA
Good Omens? Not with these idiots at the helm...: HQ AU BB, Kagehina Centric Good Omens AU currently on Hiatus: Heaven and Hell have decided: it's time for the end of the world. It's been a good 6000 years, but it's time for something fresh and new. They're desperate enough for it to happen, that they pick the worst possible (or best possible, depending on whether or not one is interested in humanity surviving the literal end of the world) agents to follow through. Unfortunately, the best laid ineffable plans of Heaven and Hell often go awry in the hands of two (or eleven or twenty or a hundred, but mostly two) volleyball idiots. T, 4.5k as of this post, HQ
your name is...?: Secret Santa for my server/guild, the first of three fics posted in a haze of Holiday cheer! A BSD Soukoku Your Name AU (and I promise I hadn’t realized this combo of it had been done, so now I’m tempted to write the reverse!): When Osamu wakes up one morning in a stranger's body in Tokyo, he's having the time of his life. Too bad things are never quite that simple. T, 10.5k, BSD
Detours: Yet Another BDay fic, for Egg this time. A Given piece, make sure to check the tags if you give it a look: Mafuyu is late to a practice session, so of course the others send Ritsuka to find him. He does, but it takes a little conversation and a lot of tears for them to get anywhere. Ritsuka doesn't have any regrets, though. T, 1.3k, Given
under a sea of lanterns and firework jellies (I see your dragonfly heart take flight, ignite): A thing I put together when my friends in the 365 Days of TDDK informed us of a vacancy, a TDDK Spirited Away/Nutcracker AU: Izuku is swept into a magical evening when a dragon wishes for a companion. T, 3.2k, BnHA
Which puts my grand total for the year at...... 146510 words! Holy cow, that’s, way more than I thought. And this year is going to be worse *stares at wip pile*
Anyways, thanks for all of the responses! If you see this,. and liked any of the fics on it give it a reblog!

Bookshelf Briefs 3/7/20
Ao Haru Ride, Vol. 9 | By Io Sakisaka | VIZ Media – Ao Haru Ride is probably the most straight-up dramatic shoujo that I am reading at the moment, and though it relies largely on story beats that would usually annoy me—like misunderstandings and poor communication—I still really enjoy it. Kou and Futaba have feelings for each other, but Kou’s misguided decision to reject Futaba in favor of hanging out with a sad former classmate kept them apart. Now, Futaba believes Kou and said classmate are a couple, so she’s trying to move on with Kikuchi, a very nice boy whom she’s trying her best to fall for. I love that Kou’s actions have consequences and also that we see their friends discussing the situation and deciding that they can’t fix things for him; this time he has to be the one to act. I also note that Kikuchi is especially likable for a romantic rival, which is kind of rare. Recommened! – Michelle Smith
Given, Vol. 1 | By Natsuki Kizu | SuBLime – Ritsuka Uenohara got so good at playing the guitar that he started to find it boring. That changes when he meets a mysterious classmate named Mafuyu Sato, who is carrying around a very nice guitar yet has no idea how to play it. Mafuyu sings for Uenohara the melody that keeps running through his head, which proves to be the spark that gets Uenohara excited about music again. Mafuyu joins Uenohara’s band as their new singer—the other members are two college guys who seem poised to have a love story of their own—and they’re quickly gearing up for their first live show. Meanwhile, Uenohara’s confused about just how he feels about Mafuyu. Given already has a lot to love: the band dynamics, the relationship between the two leads, the mystery of Mafuyu’s past… I’m eager for more! – Michelle Smith
Komi Can’t Commmunicate, Vol. 5 | By Tomohito Oda | VIZ Media – Komi Can’t Communicate is a very charming series with likable characters. (The exception, of course, is Yamai, who continues to be thoroughly gross.) In this volume, the gang patronizes a run-down restaurant whose proprietors think Komi is a famous reviewer, meets a couple of new characters (Komi is up to 13 friends now!), and plans/executes a maid café for the cultural festival. What I really like is that though there are many comedic moments, Komi continues to make genuine progress in overcoming her communication difficulties. Her mom is shocked and happy to see her talking on the phone, she’s able to say something when out shopping with the two new characters, and she even manages a brief solo dance with Tadano before Najimi turns it into a group thing. This series is sixteen volumes and counting so far and I am definitely here for the long haul. – Michelle Smith
A Man and His Cat, Vol. 1 | By Umi Sakurai | Square Enix – A flat-faced exotic shorthair keeps getting passed over at the pet store until a kind older gentleman arrives to take him home. Through a series of short chapters, they get to know each other. The human (Kanda) names the kitty Fukumaru, and it soon becomes apparent that he has lost his beloved wife, who had spoken of the possibility of getting a cat when their children were grown. This is an extremely sweet series about two beings who need each other, with dashes of humor provided by typical cat behaviors. I laughed out loud at a particularly evocative panel depicting what happens when Kanda removes an offending cover from Fukumaru’s litter box. I also appreciated seeing the pair through the eyes of Kanda’s long-time friend, who hasn’t seen him smile this much in ages. I’m looking forward to volume two! – Michelle Smith
My Androgynous Boyfriend, Vol. 1 | By Tamekou | Seven Seas – There’s a certain type of advertising line that goes “come for the _________, stay for the _________,” and I definitely feel that this works with My Androgynous Boyfriend. The androgyny is definitely a strong part of the title, such as needing to hide Meguru’s relationship with Wako to avoid fan rage, and pairing him up with another pretty boy model, Kira (which goes south fast when both disagree with the idea). But mostly I loved the simple loving relationship between Wako and Meguru, which is strong, sexy, and not something I was expecting in this sort of series. Wako also gets a lot to do, as well as some of the best lines. It’s a series where I come away going “is the next volume out already?” – Sean Gaffney
My Hero Academia: Smash!!, Vol. 3 | By Hirofumi Neda and Kohei Horikoshi | VIZ Media – Smash!! continues to be pretty fun, though there seemed to be an inordinate amount of Mineta in this particular volume. True, much of that consists of the girls orchestrating his punishment for being such a total creep, which I guess is better than it could’ve been. Story-wise, volume three takes readers through the League of Villains’ attack on the training camp, but there are many diversions prior to that, including summer vacation hijinks, rescue drills, Halloween, etc. What I like best are things I’d never had reason to think of before, like Tokoyami’s inability to perform CPR, or just completely absurd visuals like Todoroki being depicted in a poodle costume or Aizawa playing the victim in a rescue scenario. I don’t know how much reread potential this series has, but… well, “pretty fun” about sums it up. – Michelle Smith
Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu, Vol. 6 | By Natsuya Semikawa and Virginia Nitouhei | Udon Entertainment – This is still, for the most part, a lighthearted series about people enjoying delicious pub food, but there is an ominous undercurrent to the whole thing that implies that the conservative forces are starting to rally against the izakaya as being a den of witches and that things may not be bright and sunny for long. Till then, there’s omelettes, and Hamburg Steak, and any number of tasty food that the customers, even if they may be reluctant at first, come to love. The question is whether that love of food can enter the hearts of the Church, which is very much in a “everything progressive and non-traditional must go into the fire” frame of mind. – Sean Gaffney
Scarlet, Vol. 1 | By Chiri Yuino | Seven Seas – This proved to be a lot darker and less fanservice-filled than I expected given the cover… and yes, I know the cover shows a vampire and her (rather happy) victim. But the vampire’s not all that happy, and in the end this is a book about the horrors of drug addiction, albeit one coached in the language of fairy tales and legends. Fine is a tragic vampire who wants to be human again, and Iris Redblood gets to be Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf at the same time. Together, they do indeed fight crime, but they don’t always win the day—sometimes the cute little girl ends up dying. And yes, there’s more than a tinge of yuri to this, which is why I suspect folks here will pick it up. It’s pretty good, but not sure if I need more of it. – Sean Gaffney
Takane & Hana, Vol. 13 | By Yuki Shiwasu | Viz Media – Another unbalanced volume, this is definitely front-loaded, with the first half having some of the best material in the entire series, as Takane and Hana open up to each other in a private moment (that turns out to be a little less than private) and admit their feelings. The second half shows them trying to negotiate this thing they now have, going on a date (well, more of an endurance hike), and a trip to Okinawa, where they run into another annoying little problem—they still have to hide things, so she’s the “kid sister,” which irritates Takane no end. And, well, there’s also the problem if Hana lacking a certain sense of shame—fortunately Takane has it for her. The first half, though? Magnificent. – Sean Gaffney
Tales of Wedding Rings, Vol. 8 | By Maybe | Yen Press – I enjoy the art and characters, but the series does love its one plot, which is “make it look like sex will be happening any day now but never actually have it occur.” Yes, they figure out a way to get out of the “bone or die” space without actually boning, and are able to move on with the fantasy part of the plot. Which actually involves the somewhat unwieldy party splitting up, so the next book should at least try to move away from will-they-or-won’t-they? a bit. In the meantime, this is another one where there’s no real conflict between the girls (as opposed to the previous generation of ring bearers). Even Saphir, seemingly the one who cares the least, is more a jerk with a heart of gold. Getting sort of trying. – Sean Gaffney
Umma’s Table | By Yeon-sik Hong | Drawn and Quarterly – Having greatly appreciated Uncomfortably Happily, I was excited that Drawn and Quarterly would be releasing another of Hong’s manhwa in translation, Umma’s Table. The narrative follows a cartoonist named Madang and his struggle to balance (and to some extent keep separate) his life as a new parent and his life as a caregiver for his ailing mother and father. Although shadowed by his father’s alcoholism and the lasting impact it has on multiple generations, some of Madang’s happiest and most nostalgic memories are those of family meals and his mother’s food. Overall, Umma’s Table is a bittersweet, wrenching work, but it’s not without moments of hope as Madang reflects on the complexities and parallels of his experiences both as a father and as a son. While not as explicitly autobiographical as Uncomfortably Happily, elements from Hong’s life are present in Umma’s Table as well, providing a sense of visceral honesty. – Ash Brown
