alright, first real new post! and what better pick than the manga i finished reading a few days ago, parasyte (寄生獣)

volumes: 10 (original print run)

language: japanese (official translations available)

difficulty: high n3, low n2-ish. there was some n1 grammar

i don't think this is an especially unknown manga (it had a high profile anime in 2014, some live action films, and it got a korean netflix adaptation recently) but i never watched the anime so this was all new to me! and god damn is it good.

it follows the story of shinichi (pictured there on vol 3), a high school student whose right arm gets infected by a parasite from space he calls migi. as well as the various other man-eating parasites who have arrived on earth at the same time, the story mainly follows shinichi trying to get to grips with his new co-existence and the threat of the parasites on both him and the wider world.

cannot stress enough that the art is fantastic. there's a lot of great gore and very creative designs for each of the parasites and all of them are so vividly depicted. even beyond that, the characters' facial expressions are really good at showing complex emotions - even with no dialogue at all - and the art really sells some of the more hard-hitting moments. and boy are there some hard-hitting moments!

but in between the tragedy of it all there's some good humour, some philosophical musings on what it means to be human, and a strong dose of environmentalism which feels remarkably modern for something written 30 years ago.

i do have my gripes with it, though. some of the character designs look very similar to each other to the point where it's difficult to tell who's who, the plot flags a bit in the latter third, and murano absolutely deserved better, but i'd still wholeheartedly recommend it.

Important to me that Kakashi and Iruka are both the "bad boys" of the relationship but in the sense that everyone assumes Kakashi is the reserved standoffish one when actually it's Iruka. Iruka is the one who smokes and goes drinking and will put graffiti up the walls and has the worst potty mouth you've ever heard in your life and Kakashi is the one that enables Iruka's prankster nature, is an unrepentant pervert who whispers dick jokes during diplomatic missions to try and break his teammates composure and has absolute no regard for locked doors or windows he's a breaking & entering fiend

They make eachother worse just not in the ways you expect

i seriously need more narumi and mina moments because just imagine the relief mina felt when narumi joined, similar age to her and was also considered a prodigy in the force.

to have someone to share the burden of the defence force’s future with must’ve felt so freeing. because before he joined it was just her, age 18, being told that she was going to change kaiju extermination with her exceptional synergy with firearms. and she was so, so scared.

narumi doesn’t have the kind of skills or talent for long range combat like she does, but he’s also a top candidate (despite his behavioural issues- which aren’t much of a hinderance anyway) and mina doesn’t have to carry the burden of the future alone anymore

(although she’d never admit, given she probably views narumi as someone completely shocking i just think it’s so funny how she stood there like O_O when she first saw him)

like i LOVE seeing the contrast. mina who was sent onto the battlefield for the first time and was deathly afraid vs narumi who was sent out and immediately took action because that’s how he always lived (fighting)

and now they’re the top two strongest captains in the force and they will be the ones to lead the new generation..

I have realized that I don't know how to draw gender. I've actually known this for a bit but when I go to draw the transfem Ed and Wrath they just. Look the exact same plus a skirt or whatever outfit I can think of (not saying men can't wear skirts, but that's part of the things too).

I guess the reason why Al looks kinda feminine, to me at least as this has been engraved in my brain, is the fact I draw eyelashes on Al - but I do that bc her design has very very very noticeable eyelashes and would be weird if I didn't draw them. Again, this is to me.

Also, I dunno how to draw ship art. Been struggling since drawing Edling (holy SHIT I need to draw more Edling, but Wrath and Ed have been consuming my mind lately) for Edling week bc I dunno any romance stuff except kissing. And biting too ig.

this post isnt going to sound serious at all but it is. daisuke is magical girl aligned in spirit like hes a shoujo mc not a shounen mc so rather than beat the shit out of anybody his first priority at all times is to protect and make friends with them. power of friendship blah blah dream arcs and love no tournament arcs and bare chests. but he's still CRIME aligned. his entire family is and canonically has deep blackmarket / other random shady ass connections. daisuke himself has only met maybe like. one of these people, who also happened to be another student at his school and on the niwa family's side, but there's nothing stopping me or him from having more random shady ass criminal aligned friends/figures.

Like, Shockwave knows it's on Earth and he was planning to create a protoform army anyway. If he got unfrozen and dug up the Emberstone, could he also create some robot kids? (Although I doubt he'd want to. But what about Soundwave or Starscream?)
