She should have kept the lights off, let him remain a shadow, a monster hiding in the dark rather than the snarling beast snapping in her face. But it was too late for her to do anything now. The fact that she holds a knife in her hand doesn't register through the bone crushing grip he has on her jaw, all she can focus on is the pain and the cold ice of his eyes boring into hers. For a brief moment her expression betrays her, wincing at the initial sting of his touch. The true fear shines in her gaze then, before she steels herself to keep a stiff upper lip. Defiant to the very end.

Even when he swats her knife away, as easily as taking scissors from a child. Even when he smacks her forehead against the countertop, the only weakness she allows an involuntary hiss of pain. Even with a knife pressed to her throat, she resolves herself to continue her rebellion. Slowly, careful of the blade against her skin, she turns her head so that her cheek is pressed into the cold tile, and she can fix him with the same, impetuous look from the corner of her eye. "You mean we're not already having fun?"

She's acutely aware of the proximity of his face, close enough that his breath stirs the fine hairs framing her temple and brow. His body is like a large weighted blanket of muscle and bone, pressing her further and further into the countertop. A wolf playing with his food, but she was no innocent lamb ripe for the slaughter. Never one to back down from a challenge, she squirms against the confines of her cage knowing it would be nearly impossible to escape.

Despite the way her heart pounded in her ears, she couldn't deny the part of her that buzzed with excitement. There was small pleasure in the fact that the man responsible for her entrapment could kill her, but an even greater thrill in knowing that he wouldn't. If he wanted her dead, he could have killed her long ago. Pounced on her the moment she walked through the door, silencing her before she could have even screamed, and yet he held back. No, she would not die tonight, the knowledge of which brings a smug smile to her lips.

"If you're not going to punish me, then what are you doing here? Are you trying to scare me into giving up? Because no matter what you do, it's not going to work." She's taunting him, a stupid decision knowing that would likely only anger him even more. But she doesn't care. Her pride won't allow her to succumb to whatever fucked up machination he had planned without a fight. Without warning, she reaches up behind her and claws harshly at his cheeks. Marking him in much the same way he had along her jaw.

HIS CHILDHOOD MEMORIES ARE PAINTED IN BRUISES AND BLOOD. jacob had fought their father, tooth and nail, to protect them from wrath. he had learned, even at a young age, that there was no place in this world for weakness. there were always predators, there was always prey. and their parents were the first predators to sink their teeth into their skin. it wasn't long after graduating high school that he was shipped off to fight the gulf war. little john and joseph were split between two homes, destined to become victims of the system. he would be lying if he'd said that there weren't countless nights that he stared up at the stars, wondering if they were staring up at them the same. that naivety was lost in the war, crushed beneath the weight of gunfire and explosions.

when joseph pieced the family back together, there was hope. at least in the eyes of the father. jacob had a hard time subscribing to the idea of the voice, or this destiny they were meant to carve out. he couldn't relate to his brothers, or the countless faiths that lined up to slaughter. war prepares you for death, for the inevitable loss of your brethren. so, why did the news of john's death pull at something dead inside of him? his youngest brother was an idiot, controlled by his own weakness, but - his bloodshed was celebrated by those who did not deserve to breathe the same air.

and at the center of it all was the deputy. the golden girl. the beacon of hope the people of this county clung to in the midst of the reaping. she was weak. even now, as she wandered through her home, unaware of the danger that lurked in the darkness. he had sat at this table for an hour. a patient predator always gets its prey. and, like a lamb wandering from too far from the flock, samira finds herself in the jaws of a wolf.

the knife she holds doesn't pose any threat to him. he could kill her before the opportunity to use it would even present itself. it doesn't take much for jacob to rise to full height and close the distance between them. her defiance was unacceptable. her willingness to continue to fight with the resistance would be noted. his hand is almost as big as her face when he grabs her by the jaw. it's worth noting that the grip would likely leave its mark in the morning. she could stab him now. right through the heart. but he doubts she has the guts to try, not when he was commanding all of her attention.

" do not mistake my tolerance for weakness, angel. your worth does not outweigh your crime. " that's a threat. there's something serious about the way he speaks now. no more mind games, no more dancing around the point. the deputy had managed to take something from him, and she would pay the price. when he lets go of her face, he shoves her against the countertop and confiscates the knife. it's all done in a swift motion. before samira knows it, her face is pressed against the cool tile with a knife against her throat. the weight of his body against hers is a restraint. there's a long pause before he speaks against her ear. Also your quilts are super impressive. I've just started getting into fiber arts recently and quilting is something I haven't tried yet because it looks like it requires so much patience, but they're so gorgeous and practical!

I'm not gonna lie, I already know the answer to the question is going to be significantly shorter than the response to the second paragraph because I always love to talk about my quilts and quilting in general.

All of the mains in The Hidden Stairwell like the idea of kids. No one interacts with any (which, in hindsight, is weird???), but Meg absolutely wants some. Flynn has always just assumed he would have kids someday, so he's on board for that. Charlie doesn't want any kids for herself, necessarily, but she'll be the coolest aunt of all time and dote on any kids they have.

AS FOR QUILTING. Thank you so much for your kind words. <3 They really made my day. I always loved quilts growing up for those exact reasons! It's pretty, unique, and also you have a blanket! I will say the main issue with quilting is less the time involved (there are certainly different patterns that are faster than others; my quickest quilt was done in about 8 hours, start to finish, including the quilting and binding) and much more the expense. I've said it before and will probably say it again after this, quilting is not a cheap hobby. Between the sewing machines, fabric, notions, patterns (if you buy those), batting, etc. a single quilt costs easily hundreds of dollars. I quilt because I'm bad at video games and sports, haha. So, while I would love to encourage people to get into quilting, I do feel obligated to warn them ahead of time that this is not a money-saving hobby. THAT SAID, the feeling of napping under a blanket I made is one of my favorite things. Even years after I finished a quilt I still feel proud of what I achieved whenever I have my quilts on my bed. So, if you do decide to try it out, I would love to see pics sometime! If not, I completely understand.

I haven't made a ton of progress the last few weeks 'cause I shifted my attention back to editing back when I thought revisions would only take a week and have somehow taken nearly a month now, but here's where the postage stamp quilt was at as of today:

The blocks are not sewn together, so this is not a final layout. That's 16 of 81 blocks completed. It's roughly 4'x4', and contains 1024 squares.

I also tentatively committed to making a quilt to donate for a benefit raffle in June soooo that will probably be a thing I post about in the near future.

I'm thinking about how in the TF2 comics, Merasmus doesn't have constant pronouns.

like, in-game during Halloween, when you can fight him, all the Mercs use He/Him pronouns.

but in the comics, everyone who doesn't know Merasmus refers to her with She/Her pronouns.

Merasmus doesn't really care for gender. they never correct anyone for using whatever pronouns, so they either use all pronouns or just don't care for it

Ok, ok, ok. Hear me out:

TF2 emote that's just a hug.

Like, that's it. It's a partner taunt (cause duh), but everyone has their own animation to it. It'll add so much to the characters in how they react to being the one to start the hug or just going into it.

Like, bear in mind, it's 3AM again, and I JUST thought of this, but!

All characters start the taunt the same way, with their arms open, kinda like a "free hugs" way. But they all have different animations for each character (just for size differences, but it'll still be roughly the same)

Also, they'll all hug with their right arm going over the others left shoulder, and left going under the right arm. Like a "/" of sorts. Instead of both on top or both on the bottom

And maybe they'll say something? Like "you looked like you needed it" or "hugs all around!" And maybe "I needed that"

Example: most mercs will have to bend/stoop down in order to hug someone shorter, and others will have to look up/stand on their tiptoes to hug the rest.

Ok, now for animation ideas

Scout: Scout will give the merc that "trying to be the big brother hug". He gives a small pat on the back or squeezes them close. He smiles when he does it, and closes his eyes. When he disengages, he might say "thanks man. I really needed that"

Soldier: It's a stiff hug for sure. He pulls the other person in close, but it's not a bear hug. There's a slight smile on his face as he does it. He also puts his chin into the crook of the body where the neck meets the shoulder.

Pyro: They are super excited to get/give hugs! They jump as they wrap both arms around the other. They let out muffle sounds of content as they hug, and maybe some laughter. They also relax into the hug.

Demo: Given the way his outfit is detailed, Demo is careful with his hug. He has a big grin on his face when he does give a hug, though. He rubs the other's back and gives them a slight squeeze.

Heavy: Bear hug. Every single time. He might even lift the other off the ground when he does it! Heavy also has a huge smile on his face and laughs as he hugs. The other grunts a bit as they're crushed.

Engie: Dad hug. Engie gives the other a very comfy-looking hug. Even if he has to reach up with hug the others, he doesn't care. So long as he can give them some comfort, he's not gonna let his height get in the way of a hug. He rubs the others back a bit and says some encouraging words to them

Medic: Also a stiff hug, but not as much as Soldiers. His hug is a bit awkward with the medi-pack on him, but he makes it work. It starts a little stiff, but he relaxes into it as well. He has more of a soft smile on his face and closes his eyes as he relaxes.

Sniper: An awkward hug. Mans always been a bit awkward, so of course, his hugs gonna be that way as well, especially with his gangly limbs. He gives the other a small pat but chuckles a bit.

Spy: He is NOT one for hugs. Like the "Do-Si-Do" taunt, Spy doesn't want this, and he makes it clear. However, when he DOES get a hug, his body may be stiff, but his face relaxes. He lets out a quiet content sigh, and kinda realizes, he did need a hug. He doesn't admit it though. He just goes "this never happened" and goes on his way

Love this article. It includes info from Paul Nation’s research.

I refer to Paul Nation’s 2014 corpus-based study, in which he calculated the amount of input necessary to learn the most frequent 9000 words.1 Here are his findings:

Let’s imagine that you already know the first 2000 most frequent words. In this case, you would have to read just about 300 000 words (or 3 books) to pick up another thousand words at the 3000-level.2

For a rough estimate: 120,000 words is roughly 240 pages in english. this will equal one “token” from the table above.

For comparison (see this article https://chinese.stackexchange.com/questions/1685/for-magazines-or-books-how-much-does-text-volume-differ-when-comparing-chines) “An average result will be that 1,000 Chinese characters can be translated into about 600-700 English words, or 1,000 English words can be translated into about 1,500-1,700 Chinese characters, varying depending on the natures of the source contents and target writing styles. “ (this is what they referenced https://www.actranslation.com/chinese/chinese-wordcount.htm).

So 120,000(.7)=84,000 chinese words per ‘token.’ 

Or “or each 1000 English words will be translated into about 1500-1700 Chinese characters“ (https://www.actranslation.com/chinese/chinese-wordcount.htm).  So 120,000 english words, will mean 120,000*1.6= 192,000 chinese characters per ‘token.’

So, if I know the word count or character count of a novel, I can estimate how many novels/characters it will take to get to X level.

(I’ve read 69, 315 characters of guardian so far, that’s the length of first arc)

163,913 characters as of sundial arc.

53 chapters of guardian is ~191,000 characters.

54 chapters of guardian is ~195,000 characters. One chapter on average about ~3600 characters.

So since guardian is about twice that amount of chapters (106 plus extras), the whole novel would be ‘2 tokens’ and count as that much.

So I would estimate, at least in priest’s novel length, every 53-54 or so would count as 1 token on the table above.

For future reference, that’s about 20-21 pages per chapter in Pleco for on average ~3600 characters.

I’d guess a 10 page chapter in pleco to be half that number of characters, 1800 characters. So for those ‘shorter’ chaptered novels, I would need 106 chapters to reach ‘1 token.’ (192,000/1800).

Out of curiosity, I’ve read 66 chapters of hanshe at 10 pleco pages each, 66*1800= 118,800 characters. 

Plus how much I’ve read of Guardian, 69,315+118,800= 188,115

Plus Xiao Wangzi, and the chapters of Tamendegushi I’ve read,  14,718 （小王子）19*1800=34,200（他们的故事)

188115+14718+34200= 237,033 is at least how many chinese characters I’ve read so far (I’ve also read a few chapters of various things but didn’t count them well).

237,033/192,000= ~1.23 ‘tokens.’ 

And, if I want to go easy on myself? I literally re-read the sundial arc a second and third time ToT (because I really love Guardian).

So I may well be at: Read sundial arc twice: 188115+14718+34200+69315= 306,348 or 1.59 tokens. Read sundial arc three times: 188115+14718+34200+(69315*2)=375,663 or 1.96 tokens.

***So I might be in the ‘learning the 3000 most common words’ section that is going to take 576,000 more characters to get through. which is 160 more priest-novel 20-pleco-page chapters, or 320 more 10-pleco-page chapters. 

Qi Ye ~79 chapters (~284,400 characters, 1.48 tokens) , Tian Ya Ke ~81 chapters (~291,600 characters, 1.51 tokens), Mo Du ~185 chapters (~ 666,000 characters, 3.46 tokens).

So: Qi Ye + Tian Ya Ke = finishing 3000-level (or just Reading Mo Du on its own).

From the article, it summarizes that to learn all 9000 common words in a language from reading: This equals to something like 92 books. With the reading speed of 200 words per minutes (which is comfortable enough: I tend to read English at 295 wpm, and English is far from being my native language), it would take you 150 minutes a day (2.5 hours) to process all this beauty in a year.

So I am guessing, if I read 150-200 (unfortunately - but I read a lot of much shorter books when I push into extensive reading), at 30 min to 1.5 hours a day on average, I may get to that point in idk 3 years? 

Also from the article:

Any activity you do in your target language will contribute to that cherished number of 11 million tokens you need to upload to your brain. You may listen to podcasts, watch movies and YouTube, talk to strangers, read magazines, play games… When it comes to vocabulary acquisition, anything goes, seriously.

Diversify your input, and you won’t ever feel bored. But keep in mind that spoken input is often way slower than written. Read a book for two hours and you will process approximately 24 000 words. Spend the same two hours watching a movie and you will get just about 10 000 words3With a typical speech rate for movies of 83 words per minute.4.

So an hour of reading (at speaking speed) is ~12,000 words, 30 minutes is 6,000 words, 15 minutes is 3,000 words (that tracks as Guardian chapters take me 15-20 minutes to read being 3000-4000 characters and I read at around speaking speed).

A movie per hour is 5,000 words. A drama is 40 min, 1/3 of a 120 minute movie, so idk probably on average ~3,333 words per drama episode (watched in target language obviously). 

I’m not counting how much time I spend on those, because who knows, and I obviously spent lots of time listening to the Guardian audiobook (though Idk if this person’s article thinks ‘repeated reading/listening of a single material’ counts as multiple things or not).

The article suggests:  Instead, aim to cover, say, 1000-5000 levels in the first year, 6000-7000 in the next, and gradually work your way through 8000-9000 levels during the following 18 months. This way, you’ll consistently read 20-30 foreign language books a year, which is more than manageable. 

(that’s 15 chinese books in first year, or 2,880,000 characters... I feel like I’ve heard of a book easily that long in chinese... anyway, that would be 15 ‘chunks’ of 54 chapters 20-pleco-pages, or 15 ‘chunks’ of 106 chapters 10-pleco-pages... which for chinese novels typical lengths of ~100 chapters that would mean more like ~7.5 actual novels read total and possibly less if the novels are significantly longer).

Did a lot of these calculations for me (too bad I didn’t read it first).

They said at about 11.6 million words you will have learned a 35,000 english vocabulary. So 11,600,000*1.6 (the english words to chinese characters scale) = 18,560,000 chinese characters. 18.5 million characters. 

That is ~96 ‘chunks’ of 54 chapters of 20-pleco pages, (or 5155 chapters to reach all 18.5 million words). Because chinese web novels are often 100+ chapters, it would be around ~48 novels at 100-ish chapters each. 

So to get back on track: this article estimates 11.6 million english words to be 137 novels. For chinese, the equivalent would be 18.5 million characters is either ~96 chunks (54 long-chapters) or ~48 novels (100-ish chapter novels). 

48/137= 0.35 so you need to read only .35 the amount of ‘novels’ you’d need to read in english to reach the same level.

In this article, it says 100 books in english would get you to 25,000 words learned. So that would be 100*.35 = 35 (100 chapter) novels read in chinese to get to the same level maybe? And 80 books in english to get to 20,000 words learned, which is 28 (100 chapter) novels read in chinese.

I would guess, based on the two articles combined, yeah 28-35 novels read would probably get you to a comfortable reading level, possibly les novels than that.

Things I want to read: hanshe, guardian, modu, sha po lang, can ci pin, poyun, liuli, qi ye, tian ya ke, xin xiao shi yi lang, dao mu bi ji 1-9, dmbj ten years, peach blossom debt, san ye.... that’s 22 novels by name (likely more if i were to count in 100-chapter segments), plus some other novels and fanfic... i think if i just keep following my plan of reading books i want to read i will eventually hit those benchmarks.

3. “It’s three in the morning.”

“It’s August 17th. Grass is green. That sleeve is way more trailer trash than badass punk rocker.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Oh, I’m sorry, were we not just reciting a list of the obvious at each other?”

“Fuck, Victoria, just get in the car before I change my mind,” Chloe practically growls, leaning across the cab to throw the passenger side door open in invitation.

“Why would I do that?” Victoria asks, but doesn’t stop, forcing Chloe to keep creeping down the street in her truck with the door open, like some kind of stranger danger-ass creep.

“Because it’s three in the morning and you’re walking down the street alone at night by yourself, like an idiot,” Chloe barks. She’s trying to do the right thing, trying to be like… all conscientious and shit. It hardly feels worth it, when once again, Victoria Chase finds a way to make her feel like a totally useless idiot the moment she opens her mouth. “Why are you walking down the street alone at night by yourself like an idiot?”

“Why are you stalking me in your truck?” Victoria tosses back. “You know, you’re not doing much for all those awful stereotypes about predatory lesbians, Chloe. What’s next? Going to offer me some candy? What, are you a friend of my mom’s?”

“Your mom and I aren’t friends, she just eats me out when your dad’s not home,” Chloe says and the tension in her shoulders, the sharp sting of humiliation reddening the back of her neck eases when Victoria chokes out a laugh. “Now stop being a bitch and get in the fucking car. It’ll be faster. Put us both out of our misery.”

Victoria actually pauses this time, glancing around the street before eyeing Chloe’s truck with suspicion. 

“No one’s gonna see,” Chloe rolls her eyes and leans back into her seat. “Literally everyone smarter than you’s at home in bed right now. So, like, the whole town.”

With a huge sigh, Victoria hauls herself into the truck, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the whole cab. She smells like expensive perfume, peppermint schnapps and wood smoke. She kicks her towering heels off immediately, pulling her stockinged feet up onto the bench and tucking herself into the corner of the cab.

Stockings. She’s wearing stockings under that short skirt, riding up even shorter with the twist of her legs. Stockings, like some kind of sexy old-timey movie star fantasy run amok. Chloe wonders how Victoria Chase finds a way to be 18 and 81 at the same time. 

“Whose party?” Chloe asks once she drags her eyes away from Victoria’s legs, pretending she doesn’t see the smirk on Victoria’s face that means she absolutely noticed.

“The Vortex Club’s. Who else?” Victoria asks, running a hand through her hair. It’s shorter now than the last time Chloe saw her, a few months ago. It makes her look older, more mature. It leaves Chloe feeling even more like a stupid teenager, fumbling and uncouth, even though she’s technically older than Victoria.

“Yeah, stupid question,” Chloe mutters. It feels dangerous, just the two of them in Chloe’s truck like this. “Not like you hang out with anyone else.”

“It’s called having standards,” Victoria sniffs. “Maybe if you tried it sometime you wouldn’t be nearly twenty and still getting busted by the cops for smoking pot and blowing up GI Joes with firecrackers behind the Circle K.”

“You heard about that?” Chloe laughs. It’s a little embarrassing, and David had given her absolute hell over it once word got back to him from his little buddies in blue, but Christ, it had been funny. 

“About how somehow you’re an adult who has the life of a Toy Story villain and you’re, like, fine with it? Yeah, Chloe. I heard about it.”

“And you think my life would be, what, different? Better? If I just wanted it to be? If I had your standards?” Chloe asks, pulling into the darkest corner of the Blackwell student lot and killing the engine. The cab is dark but for the light streaming in through the back window from streetlamp a few rows over. The night is silent without the rattle of the truck’s old engine. Chloe slithers across the seat like she’s been wanting to do since Victoria got into the truck. Closer, she can read the expression Victoria’s face a bit better – a little expectant, a little disbelieving, like she always seems to be when they’re together like this.

Like she’s halfway between scared and excited and she likes it best right there, between the two.

“I think our lives are what we make them,” Victoria says, voice even and calm, despite the quickening of her breath. Her makeup’s gently faded from the night, except for the lipstick Chloe saw her touching up on the street before she pulled up alongside her. It’s bright red, applied just a little too thick, Victoria a little too drunk to make it perfect. “I think if you want to be successful and you work hard for it, it will happen.”

Chloe wants to lean in and mess it up. She wants to taste it herself, scrape it off Victoria’s bottom lip with her teeth, smear it messily down her chin, her cheek. She wants that lipstick staining the collar of her shirt tomorrow when she wakes up.

But she waits.

“So people who don’t succeed, it’s just their fault for not wanting it enough, huh? For not working hard enough,” Chloe says and it makes her mad, kind of. But it doesn’t make her want Victoria less. Victoria says nothing, just keeps watching Chloe from across the bench, leg still tucked up under her. “Pretty rich girl like you, you would think that. Mommy and Daddy sending you to a fancy private art school. You would think that.”

“I worked hard to be here,” Victoria says.

“Yeah,” Chloe nods. “You and your standards.”

She leans forward, one hand behind Victoria’s head flat on the glass of the window, the other grasping the inside of a thigh, just under her skirt, just over where the stockings end. She applies the gentlest pressure, feels Victoria turn for her, legs falling open for her, hears the breath catch in Victoria’s throat.

Chloe knows an invitation when she sees one. She slides her hand higher.

You wouldn’t know how she was being touched from that perfectly cool look on Victoria’s face. Smug, almost bored. Chloe kind of admires her for it, even though she wants nothing more than to ruin that poise. It’s the challenge, the vaguely adversarial nature of the sex that keeps these encounters, brief and few that though they’ve been, interesting. 

It doesn’t take long, really. Chloe’s good enough at this by now and Victoria’s drunk enough to not care that she’s being obvious. Within minutes she’s writhing against the door, shaking and swollen, dripping down Chloe’s wrist and begging to come.

So, of course Chloe pulls away.

Victoria keens, scrabbling desperately at Chloe’s retreating arm, panting and lipstick-smudged and nearly delirious. “Fuck. Fuck. Why’d you stop?”

“Well, I figured you wouldn’t want any handouts, right?” Chloe drawls, and reaches over her shoulder for a fistful of her tanktop. She yanks the shirt up and over her head, liking the sound her necklace makes when it falls against her bare skin. And yeah, technically, this is a tremendously bad idea because they’re in the Blackwell parking lot and there’s security wandering around out there somewhere but, well. Fuck it. Life’s a risk.

“Are you serious right now?” Victoria glares, looking very regal and pissed off for a girl with her skirt hiked up over her hips. All the incandescent rage in the world couldn’t disguise the way her eyes keep drifting down to Chloe’s exposed breasts, though, the way she has to fight to meet Chloe’s eyes when she speaks.

“Well, it wouldn’t have been very fair of me not to give you a chance to earn it,” Chloe shrugs. “But, y’know, most people don’t know this about me but I’ve actually got a pretty fuckin generous spirit and shit. So, like, if you were to ask me nicely, I’m sure I could…”

“Oh fuck this,” Victoria snarls and for a moment Chloe thinks she must have finally pushed too far, that Victoria’s going to fumble her way out of the cab and stalk back to her room.

But instead she launches herself across the cab, shoving Chloe up against the other door so hard and clumsy and fast her elbow bounces hard enough off the steering wheel to make her whole arm go numb. But before she has a chance to complain about that Victoria’s in her lap, grinding against Chloe’s bare stomach while her fingers tug insistently at the metal bars through Chloe’s nipples.

She’s rough and pissed off and neither of them is going to last like this but, well. Victoria’s kind of a perfectionist, control-freak weirdo, right? Chances are she’ll want a few more rounds, to make it perfect.

Chloe’s never been one to back down from a challenge.

Blueprint for Murder

Kemi Adeyoola

On June 28 2006, 18-year-old Kemi Adeyoola, daughter of a multi millionaire, was sentenced to the murder of an elderly woman after an incriminating 'blueprint' was discovered. The blueprint was written during her stint in a young offenders institution. The plan? A truly 'fiendish' crime, brutally stabbing 84 year old Anne Mendel 14 times. She was convicted at the Old Bailey yesterday and sentenced today to a recommended minimum of a least 20 years behind bars.

No one could understand why this twisted teen targeted elderly Anne Mendel, they were neighbours for a short time in North London. On first meeting Anne Mendel the first thing that you'd notice would be her size, at around 7 stone and barely 4 foot 10 she was a small woman who had spent her whole life helping others.

Kemi Adeyoola was her complete opposite. She was working at the time as a £500 a night prostitute and had served time for shoplifting. The 'blueprint for murder' that she was later found to have written while she was in a young offenders' institution was over 18 pages long, and detailed her plan to make £3 million by killing a 'wealthy, quite elderly and defenceless' victim.

The blueprint was actually discovered in her cell while she was still in the institution, but all that was done to protect te outside world was the creation of a council monitoring team to supervise her for three months after her release. But unfortunately psychiatrists decided that Kemi wasn't a risk to the public and tragically less than a month after the supervision ended, Anne Mendel was dead.

81 year old Leonard Mendel, Anne's husband, found Anne Mendel wearing blood soaked pyjamas and pink dressing gown, with a pile of clothes thrown on top of her.

Kemi who is the daughter of a property tycoon worth around £10 million, faces a life sentence. After this verdict those closely following the case stated that they believed that she was 'born to kill' and that she was a 'supremely arrogant phschopath with a total disregard for humanity'.

Kemi has since been disowned by her father Bola Adeyoola, he stated:

'Nobody is born evil but what she did was evil. She is no longer my daughter. I will never see her again, and don't want her anywhere near me. I regret the day I ever met her mother. When I saw Mrs Mendel's picture I started crying. As a Christian, I can't believe anyone would do that.'

Mr Adeyoola, a 49 year old former boxer who lived in a £2 million Berkshire home with his latest wife, had previously given his daughter free accommodation in the home as well as a £140 a week job.

Discussing this he said, 'She was staying with me until a month before the murder, when I found out she had been shoplifting. I do wonder wether this woman would still be alive if I hadn't kicked her out. At first I couldn't accept that somebody with my blood in her veins could do this to anyone - but then I saw the evidence. She should rot in hell.'

His marriage to Kemi's mother Mercuria lasted barely 4 years, and he had very little contact during the upbringing of his three children. Mercuria also has a fourth child from a different relationship.

She and her children moved to a succession of homes in places including Cheltenham and Peterborough, frequently alienating neighbours. While staying in one specific property in Gloucestershire, Kemi reportedly killed the goldfish in a neighbour's pond and blamed it on a cat.

The teenage killer briefly boarded at £23,000-a-year Wycliffe College. The independent school at Stonehouse in the Cotswolds prides itself on its academic and sporting achievements, but Kemi only lasted a few months because of a row over who was paying her fees.

The family then moved to Elmcroft Road in Golders Green for several months, living next to Mr and Mrs Mendel.

The elderly couple had been married for 50 years and lived a quiet, rewarding life. They had two children, and 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Their son Yitzhak appealed for help after his mother's murder said 'My mother spent every day of her week performing good deeds and charity work. She devoted her whole life to visiting the sick, helping friends and neighbours and bringing a smile to everyone she knew - even complete strangers.'

In her youth Anne Mendel had worked as a hospital secretary and joined the Army during the Second World War, helping to track German bombers blitzing the East End of London.

While living beside Anne Mendel, Kemi locked herself out of her home and was quickly allowed into Anne's home. Anne Mendel did this despite the fact that neighbours reported Kemi subjecting residents nearby to a 'reign of terror'. Reportedly abusing young children, harassing neighbours due to their race and even smearing excrement on windows.

A resident who wanted to remain anonymous stated, "She gave a lot of trouble to one particular family. Once she lay in wait for the man, an Asian, behind a bush and punched him in the face, breaking his nose. She called his wife a "Paki lover". He said she tried to poison his dog as well.' Kemi was later arrested for this.

Other neighbours recall Mr Adeyoola sometimes turning up in his Rolls Royce to see his children, but the visits were brief and infrequent.

Kemi pretty much ignored her and by the time that she was 15 she had already fallen into bad habits. She was stealing frequently from high Street stores. She told the jury when in court that it was a skill and explained how she became adept at changing receipts to get refunds for these stolen goods.

However her arrogance outweighed her skill it seems, as after a string of convictions found herself finally facing a custodial sentence.

Her self-obsession continued and she reportedly talked to one of her siblings bragging about her acting talents when she was questioned by a youth worker. She said that she wept, mumbled and arched her back in an attempt to convince her of her 'innocence and vulnerability' to try and get herself a shorter sentence.

'It worked such a treat I could tell she was touched,' she wrote. 'I felt she sensed my anguish.'

However, her arrogance once again got in her way and she ended up at Bulwood Hall young offenders' institute in Essex for 3 months.

This young offenders institute is where she would craft her devious plan.

Her blueprint was discovered during a routine cell search, it was titled Prison and After - Making Life Again and included a shopping list and logged in detail her plan to kill dismember and dispose of a victim in pursuit of £3 million. The shopping list consisted of sharp knives or butchers knives, guns, drugs and handcuffs.

She imagined several different scenarios including stalking an elderly woman in a wealthy area, posing as a student carrying out a questionnaire.

'Run lightly and silently behind her and cover her mouth with a gloved hand,' she wrote. 'Make her so scared she co-operates. Keep calm, composed and silent. She must co-operate or take a knife to her throat. Tell her, "This is your only warning... With your butcher's knife, remove her head. Wrap it in film to contain bleeding, detach limbs one by one.'

When these writings were discovered she told her psychiatrists and prison staff that her notes were part of the draft of a novel. And incredibly, they believed her. The psychiatric assessment carried out after the document was discovered claimed that it 'did not indicate any concern that Miss Adeyoola would be pre-disposed in any way to this type of violence - nor was there any evidence of this type of violence in her past'. It described her as a 'highly intelligent and sophisticated young person . . . who with good support should make a good recovery and engage in her A level studies.' Kemi told a psychiatrist that she had accused 4 grade A GCSE's which they believed and said they felt it was a shame that she had been arrested.

However after her release in November 2004,1 education wasn't even on her radar. She moved into a flat with another teenager, telling the court that her job as an 'escort' easily paid for her £800 a month flat. She claimed that 'It is a completely legitimate and professional business. We earned up to £5,000 a week.'

In March 2005 her first month without any supervision at an end, Kemi turned her words into action.

Mr Mendel left the home for just an hour to pick up the plane tickets for their upcoming trip to Israel, and within this hour, Anne Mendel was dead. Kemi attacked the elderly woman in her home, inflicting deep wounds to the victims torso, right arm and blade with a blade that was proven to be at least 1 inch wide and 5 inches long.

A spokesman for the Barnet Youth Offending Team said: 'There was nothing in the file that would have predicted homicide. The psychiatric report did not predict any likely occurrence of this.'

Kemi appeared at her trial dressed in a pinstriped suit pink trainers and spangly belt, and she reportedly seemed completely unmoved by her crime. She was smiling and actually exchanging text messages during court recesses.

She lied to the police over the nature of the DNA evidence that had been found on Anne's body, claiming that she had actually visited the pensioner the day before the murder and that the elderly woman has scratched her hand as she helped her across the road.

Kemi then used a 16 year old girl, who can't be named, to try and construct herself an alibi for her brutal crime.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Morris called her 'a callous and devious young woman', adding: 'Her cold, calculated use of extreme violence beggars belief.'

The police investigating the case believe that Kemi never intended to stop there. In fact, they believe that Anne Mendel may simply have been a 'dry run' before targeting a wealthier victim. Detective Sergeant Paul Belsham said: 'If she had got away with this then God knows what she might have done. She is very very dangerous.'

Mr Mendel, who has moved to Israel to live with his daughter, described his wife as someone 'whose life was taken up with kindness and giving up of herself to others The unjust end she met, having so much taken away in such an undeserving manner, left us in total shock.'
