Have you ever bought a YouTuber’s merch?  No. Most of the merch that had been put out when I was still into YouTubers were always underwhelming and overpriced, anyway.

Do you think oatmeal tastes better when made with water or milk?  Eugh, I don’t like oatmeal. Ate it everyday for breakfast as a kid and I just want nothing to do with anymore.

If you could volunteer for any charity, which one would you choose? Do you think it’s more important to help humans, or are animal and environmental charities equally important?  I don’t think acts of charity should be compared. Personally though, I tend to lean towards causes for animals.

Do you prefer holidays where you relax, or actually do things? My family alwaysssssss makes sure our itineraries are absolutely packed when we go on vacations. Seems like a waste of money to travel to a new place just to stay holed up in our hotel room.

Have you been falsely diagnosed with something by a bad doctor?  Not necessarily misdiagnosed, but I’m pretty sure I was prescribed the wrong set of medicines for my UTI last year...nothing came out of taking those pills and I felt just as sick (and dead) as I was after a couple of days. The only reason I got better was Angels’s mom is a doctor and gave me the right meds to take, which worked on me within a couple of hours.

Teen Mom: Ranking the Most Insane Feuds of All Time!

From on-camera brawls to social media feuds and legal threats, the cast of Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 sure know how to go hard. Moments that made you cringe 'cause they were so painful, or smile ear-to-ear. Scenes that were fights, or made you fight back tears.

The franchise really does have it all, and as such, it's become one of the most entertaining in the history of the reality TV genre.

Below, we look back at some of the MTV gang's most explosive feuds, and however you might rank them, this much is undeniable: Way back then. Not so way back then. Last year. Last month. Last week. Probably right now. There is no shortage of beef.

NOTE: We’ve saved the craziest for last, so we suggest that you a deep breath, sit back, grab a hat and hold the f--k onto it …

When Briana DeJesus joined the Teen Mom 2 cast in 2017, she was not welcomed with open arms. In fact, she quickly became persona non grata at her first get-together with the cast - with one exception. Jenelle Evans, Briana said, “is the only one who was acting like her s--t ain’t stink. Plus she was the only one who wasn’t acting fake and choosing sides.” Leah Messer’s response was to “pay no attention to those who try to bring you down … they’re just envious of where you are and how well you’re doing.” As we'll get to in a bit, relations haven't exactly gotten more amicable since.

Maci Bookout and Taylor McKinney's relationship has produced three kids, and they seem very happily married ... most of the time. Like, 85 percent of the time. Bookout alarmed fans with the confession a few years ago that revealed some trouble in paradise: “Eighty-five percent of the time we’re good to go … Fifteen percent is hell. All of our stress and emotions, we take out on each other. When the cameras leave, we’ll drink and freak out. It’s always literally the smallest things. It’s such small stuff but it blows up. It’s not going to go away.” Yikes ... but at least they've had plenty of time to work on things?

So Jenelle has this weird thing about Chelsea -- she accused her of copying her because she made a website for herself after she'd already made her own, because making a website is something totally special and unique. She also kind of accused Chelsea of copying her when she gave birth to Watson the day after Jenelle gave birth to Ensley, which is just wild. On another occasion, Jenelle went off about Chelsea ignoring her older daughter, Aubree, after having Watson, insinuating that she's a bad mother. Chelsea liked a tweet from someone who called Jenelle "pathetic" for bringing up Aubree, which is pretty much the most she's ever participated in this feud.

This one is pretty weird -- one time Babs "jokingly" threatening to "kill Kail" during an Instagram Live session with Jenelle. Lowry was understandably not amused and threatened to quit the show over Barbara's threats. That didn't happen, of course, and it's no longer an issue since Jenelle and her family are no longer on the show, but how bizarre, right?

Brooke Wehr was never a Teen Mom 2 cast member, but due to her mercurial relationship with Jeremy Calvert, her impact was felt just the same. A few years ago, the couple's engagement ended after Brooke accused Jeremy of cheating on her with multiple women, one being a Teen Mom 2 producer, another being her best friend, and a third possibly being his ex-wife Leah Messer. Brooke even shared a screen shot of a text message conversation between Jeremy and the best friend as proof, while Calvert responded in a drunken stupor that yes, maybe he did sleep with Brooke's best friend, but ... only because Wehr slept with some other guy first. Or, as he put it, Brooke was "f-cking his brains out, every day," and he was single, so "my dick was happy to do whatever the f-ck it wanted to do, and it did." Shocking that these two didn't work out ... but neither party was completely off base with their allegations. Just saying. Jeremy and Leah did hook up.

Briana hooked up with Luis in a bathroom while she was drunk, and she got pregnant. They tried to make a relationship work, but he cheated on her and was generally just not great. He's never really been around for their daughter, Stella, but he did come back around last year for a bit. Briana even decided to give him another shot -- except this time, she got the clap. So yeah, they're not on the best terms.

Devoin is the father of Briana's first child, Nova, and they haven't gotten along for many, many years. Briana says that Devoin is a deadbeat dad, Devoin says that Briana won't let him be an active father, it's this whole thing. However, things got especially bad last summer when Briana let him take Nova for an overnight visit and he ended up getting drunk while he was with her alone at a pool. More recently, she criticized him for not giving her any money to help with Nova.

This feud has been going on for years, but has taken on many new forms due to ever-changing circumstances and new tensions. The main point of contention for awhile was Javi's relationship with Briana DeJesus, who came on board the cast of Teen Mom 2 in 2017 amid a lot of controversy. Bri and Kail are bitter rivals (more on that later), so it's not surprising that Ms. Lowry would take issue with DeJesus hooking up with her ex ... or proposing to her. Kail was so salty over Javi's new relationship that she even canceled plans to collaborate on a pair of memoirs with Marroquin. android tv boxThese days, the two of them seem to be doing OK for the most part, but of course that could change at any moment.

Jenelle and Leah used to be friendly, but then things changed -- possibly because Leah became so close with Jenelle's mortal enemy, Kailyn Lowry. Jenelle has thrown plenty of jabs at Leah on social media, like the time she claimed CPS removed the twins from Leah's care and that there were more shocking details about all that that no one knows about. She's also criticized Leah for allowing her daughter to wear makeup and short skirts for cheerleading. As for Leah, she doesn't really seem to pay too much attention to anything Jenelle's ever said about her, although she did speak out after David killed Nugget, Jenelle's dog.

There was a time when Jenelle and Farrah were friends, but no more -- to be honest, both ladies seem to have trouble maintaining friendships with anyone. Jenelle has made remarks about Farrah's plastic surgery and her adult entertainment ventures, and Farrah has called Jenelle out on her bad parenting and her horrific taste in men. After Jenelle left David last year, Farrah offered her support, then ultimately decided to block her on social media because it's none of her business.

Jenelle didn't like Cheyenne from the moment MTV announced she was joining the cast of Teen Mom OG because of some tweets she'd made about white people several years ago. But the feud really started last year when Jenelle made a comment about Amber Portwood's assault charges -- Cheyenne tweeted that Jenelle "should be the last person throwing shade." Jenelle told her that she had no clue what she was talking about, then Cheyenne hit back with "Coming from the real racist, dog killer, abuser and honestly the most unstable individual I’ve witnessed.. GREAT STATEMENT.. get custody of ALL your kids and stay out of court before you talk about me." Jenelle tried to come back from that by calling her a "replacement," but Cheyenne said "And you're fired... soooo?" Beautiful.

Mackenzie has often criticized the network that made her a D-list star -- she once blasted both MTV itself and Teen Mom viewers who have been critical of her relationship with Ryan, particularly her decision to let him drive to their wedding while he was so high that he lost consciousness behind the wheel. "It’s easy to show the ‘half truth’ and portray it as a whole," Mackenzie wrote in a lengthy social media tirade. "But that’s ok because regardless of what happens, whether right or wrong, you’re considered scum.” She's also accused MTV of making her and her husband look bad with editing, but we'd argue that Ryan has always made himself look bad just because of who he is as a person. android tv box

Jenelle Evans' relationship with David Eason has been suspect from the start, even to members of their inner circle - and their own families. One of the loudest voices of disapproval of Jenelle is David Eason's sister. Her complaints were nothing new - Jenelle's a bad mom, a violent criminal, a drug addict, etc. But just because Jenelle's heard these criticisms before, that doesn't mean she took them lying down. In a public Facebook exchange that was at once amusing and horrifying, Jenelle tore into Jessica Eason Miller, accusing her of child abuse and hard drug addiction. Jess shot back by accusing Jenelle of going to great lengths to keep her numerous abortions a secret. Needless to say, these sisters-in-law won't be meeting up for cosmos anytime soon.

Following a slew of gossip stories shared by her co-stars a few years ago that she deemed unflattering, the Carolina Hurricane unleased her legal fury ... to widespread mockery. Jenelle sent cease-and-desist letters to a number of her co-stars, including Leah Messer, Chelsea Houska, and Chelsea's father, Randy Houska. She also took legal action against peripheral friends such as Ryan Dolph, and even her own mother, Barbara Evans. It's yet another reminder that Jenelle is not someone you want to mess with. Not because there's any legal merit to what she was alleging, but just because she's certifiably bonkers and when you kick a hornets' nest of that size, you open yourself up to all kinds of mayhem, bedlam and chaos.

Farrah hasn't gotten along with her former co-stars for years, but on one memorable occasion, she hopped on Instagram to allege that Lowell is a closeted pothead and Baltierra is secretly gay. Yes, for real. Catelynn was unable to defend herself as she was in rehab at the time being treated for various emotional issues; Tyler simply dismissed Farrah's claims as the ravings of seriously unstable woman. Probably the best way to conduct one's self in that situation, but they don't always brush it off. Tyler later stirred the pot once more when he said MTV was right to fire Farrah for her porn career, to which Abraham responded with an iconic word salad in the third person. android tv box

Catelynn has also attacked Farrah over the years - who could forget when she called her fellow Teen Mom a "hoe bag," or when she pretended not to know who Farrah was and instead started talking about Farrah Fawcett? What about the time that she charged out during Farrah's reunion fight with Amber yelling "TRASHY BITCH"? And then there was the time that Catelynn posted this just before Farrah's canceled boxing match with Hoopz. Stay classy, everyone!

This was a feud no one saw coming. Apparently Ryan was active on the dating app Tinder, despite the fact that he's, ya know ... married. When Mackenzie found out about this RIGHT AFTER they tied the knot, she was understandably not pleased. Catching your husband swiping and chatting with other chicks after you married him days earlier? Insane. But, instead of taking out her frustrations on Edwards himself, she decided to let loose on a random girl he was chatting with online. Edwards' Tinder Girl was the undisputed victor in this one, destroying Mackenzie's argument simply by stating, “Your husband is the one on Tinder.” Enough said, really. Incredibly, they stayed married, Mackenzie got pregnant ... TWICE. To quote the legendary Kieffer Delp, "You know how choices be."

Jeremy has never been a fan of David and Jenelle -- he spoke out against the homophobic remarks that got David fired, and he got into a spat with Jenelle after she was shown pulling a gun on that guy (he called her a "dumb bitch" in case you forgot). Later, David commented on a photo that Jeremy shared to tell him that he looked "like a bitch," and Jeremy went off on him in a long rant that concluded with "keep f-cking with me and I'll fly my ass to nc and I'll show u what kind of bitch I am pretty boy." So yeah, they don't like each other.

Where do you even start with these three? Ryan and Maci have experienced their share of rough patches over the years as they've struggled to peaceably co-parent their son, Bentley, but in the past, they've always been able to sort out their differences eventually. But then Ryan started doing heroin and brought Mackenzie into the picture, and that's not really the case anymore. Maci thinks that Mackenzie enables Ryan, Mackenzie thinks that Maci stresses Ryan out -- it's a mess. The two ladies have said plenty of nasty things about each other over the years, while Ryan went in and out of jail and rehab. Like we said, it's a mess. Poor Bentley.

Farrah has said a lot of things about the network that made her famous, like that time that she bizarrely claimed that MTV forces stars of the Teen Mom franchise to continue having children, even when they'd prefer not to. Abraham also accused the producers of encouraging Amber Portwood to attack her during their reunion show melee (more on that later), and even claimed she was fired from the network for partaking in "adult" pursuits on the side. Even more amazingly than the fact that she threw around the term "hate crimes" to describe how MTV treated her? The apparent fact that the folks who made her famous are actually willing to continue working with Farrah. Or were, until she finally got fired or quit, depending who you believe. With Farrah, every day is another day in the Post-Truth Era.

Where do we even begin with this. In late summer 2019, a 911 call was placed from Javi's home, following a dispute there. No charges were filed, but the truth came out. You see, Javi had recently gotten engaged to Lauren, with whom he welcomed his second son. Not long after that, he got busted cheating on her, banging one of the members of his CrossFit gym ... IN HIS BATHROOM while Lauren was asleep (or so he thought) IN THEIR HOME. As if that weren't crazy enough, he then called Kailyn to mediate; Kail later put him on blast, claiming he'd been cheating on Lauren back when she was pregnant and chastising him for wanting her to "clean up their mess." Don't worry, Javi posted a cheesy apology on Instagram, for everyone to see, and it was all good with Lauren after like 12 minutes.

There's always been some seriously bad blood between Farrah and Debra -- remember that time that she hit her in the early days of Teen Mom OG? Deb forced Farrah to become a mother when she insisted she wasn't ready, she didn't support her after Sophia's father passed away, and she was just generally awful towards her. Things got so bad between them that at one point, Farrah said that she'd wished that her mother would "just f-cking die already." They've been estranged for a long time now, although Farrah does sometimes allow Deb to see Sophia.

Jenelle Evans and her mother, Barbara, have always had a tumultuous relationship, with Babs unafraid to dish it out as much as she's forced to take it. In previous years, they would fight a lot and trade zingers (such as this classic image), then eventually put it behind them. For a good long while, Jenelle and Babs were at each other's throats more often than not, and the stakes couldn't have been higher. Barbara now has permanent custody of Jenelle's oldest son, Jace, and Jenelle has mostly come to terms with it. Thankfully, they're not fighting so much these days -- yep, they're actually managing to get along. For the moment, anyway.

Things neared a boiling point between Amber Portwood and Matt Baier after he vowed that would never marry her ... because she wouldn’t marry him on the spot in Las Vegas, obviously. “I will not marry her,” he said. “I will not marry her now, ever! I’m not gonna let her [brother] dictate my life. That f—king f—got. She wants to marry her brother. That’s who she wants to marry. F—k her. She just humiliated me on TV. I’m done!” Matt, who was livid at Amber’s reasoning for not eloping in Vegas - her brother Shawn not being present - went on to tell a producer, “I don’t care who you have to give oral pleasure to, keep the Amber and Matt wedding thing off [the air]. She just embarrassed me in front of 12 million people.” We’re pretty sure you did that to yourself, Matt …

As if it wasn't bad enough that Matt Baier offered Catelynn Lowell a Xanax before a press event, casting serious doubt over whether or not he remains drug-free, he ultimately took a lie detector test to prove his faithfulness to Amber Portwood ... and failed. The polygraph revealed that Matt made sexual advances toward other women during his relationship with the Teen Mom star, and that was it for her. "Trash! TRASH! I got you money. I got you deals! And you tried to f--k her! F--K YOU!" Their breakup, which was a long time coming, was not undone despite a stint on Marriage Boot Camp ... though she did meet crew member Andrew Glennon while on the set and went on to have his baby. Perhaps the longest-running feud of the franchise, Chelsea Houska and Adam Lind face off mostly through their lawyers these days, because the derelict of society can't stay out of trouble or pay child support. In recent years, he's failed drug tests with meth in his system, and he's also been arrested more than once for domestic violence. Because of all of that, he's only allowed to see his daughter with Chelsea at a visitation center (which he rarely seems to do), and he gave up his parental rights completely for his other daughter, Paislee.

Amber and Jenelle have never interacted all that much since they were on different shows, but still, Amber felt the need to speak out after one of David's many abuse scandals -- she ranted about it on Instagram, calling him names like "bitch" and "disgusting clown." Jenelle told her to leave her family alone, and she also said "You’re the one who went to jail for domestic violence but you’re sitting here pointing fingers at my husband?" Amber then threatened to beat her up, because of course she did. Their feud was reignited months later when Jenelle started saying that it was unfair that she got fired when Amber got to keep her spot on the show. Amber never responded, but a source did report that “She doesn’t feel the need to get into a feud with Jenelle with everything going on in the world right now."

This feud has been going on for a long, long time, and it started back in the day when Jenelle needed Kailyn to post bail for her, but then she never paid her back. These two have traded insults over the years, and Jenelle was actually low enough to leak the news of Kail's pregnancy with Lux. Since then, they've been making snide remarks about each other on social media, with David even joining in to insult her about things like her weight and her sexuality. Most recently, Jenelle took a break from her newfound body positivity to call Kail "a giant compared to me," and Kailyn hit back by saying that at least she has custody of all of her children. Classic stuff there.

Nathan and Jenelle were terrible together, and things didn't change after they broke up. The big issue was that she didn't waste any time in getting with David, and David has always hated Nathan. Like, a lot. The feeling became mutual after a while, and Nathan started claiming that Kaiser had told him that David was abusive. Nathan once even tweeted photos of some suspicious bruises on Kaiser that he said were from David hitting him with a stick, but Jenelle turned it around, suggesting that Nathan was the abusive one. Nathan has been talking about getting custody of Kaiser for a while now, but of course he has his own issues on top of everything else.

Amber Portwood and Farrah Abraham’s iconic beef may never be topped, at least in terms of how it came to a head on an MTV reunion special with the cameras rolling. It was pretty standard - or at least it was until Farrah said that Amber's then-boyfriend, Matt Baier, looks like a pedophile. With Farrah and her then-boyfriend, Simon Saran, just trolling Matt incessantly, Portwood hit her breaking point off camera. She stormed the stage, trying to fight Farrah, hurling insult after insult at her rival, and even throwing a punch that missed. Baier and Farrah's father, Michael, then got into it physically, forcing security to break it up. Crew members stormed the stage to pull Amber away from Farrah and it was all a mess. The bad blood from their epic reunion fight lingered long after the dust settled and only worsened in the years since.. Farrah said Gary Shirley should have full custody of Amber’s daughter, and that Amber needs to stop "using me to get attention … I want nothing to do with [her] criminal behavior or lying evil groups of people [she associates] with.” Fast forward to 2019, in the wake of Amber's arrest for assaulting Andrew Glennon (below), Farrah said again: "I do not speak to others who are very vulgar and abusive. I haven’t spoken to her. I feel that children, adults, family members, everyone associated should be treated with care, love. And that’s where the society and the world is going. I really hope that, not only Amber, but I hope Catelynn, I hope Maci… gets some help. They seriously need it." Vintage Farrah word salad.

This feud never really stops, but boy does it take more twists and turns than we can even count. Most notably, Javi started dating Briana, and even proposed to her in 2018, resulting in a lot of bitter feelings from Kailyn. THEN, he broke up with Briana and started dating Lauren Comeau ... who quickly became pregnant with his child, prompting more feelings from both Kailyn and Briana. THEN Kailyn revealed that after his split from Briana, but prior to him impregnating Lauren, Javi tried to bang Kailyn repeatedly. After that, it came out that Javi was actually juggling all three women at the same time. Who has the energy?

One of the best, for obvious reasons. As we mentioned, Bri's was dating Kailyn's ex-husband, Javi Marroquin, a move that effectively drove a dagger into the heart of their friendship - whatever that consisted of. They had a very heated argument at one reunion, and at the next, they wanted to physically fight each other. First, Kail invited Briana for a private chat in a room backstage, but Briana left before things could get bad. Later, when it was time for all the girls to to onstage together, Briana tried to attack Kailyn, but security guards were able to keep them away from each other. They don't do reunions together anymore, but they do get sassy about each other on social media!

There's a lot here, so let's just breeze through, all right? Kailyn met Chris at college, she slept with him when she was still married to Javi, and he ended up impregnating her when the marriage was over. He was never around throughout the pregnancy, and she even said he had another girlfriend, though he did show up for the birth and for a little while after. Kail has said that things went bad a few months later, and she's even claimed that he broke into her house and broke a window in her bedroom at that time. Still, she had a big thing for them, and they hooked up every now and then. Eventually, he got her pregnant again, and she soon got an order of protection against him. Right now, she's nearing the end of that pregnancy, and things don't seem to be much better with Chris.

Nothing funny about this one. On July 5, 2019, Portwood was arrested and charged with two counts of domestic battery and one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon after she struck her boyfriend, Andrew Glennon, in the neck as Glennon held their son James in his arms. She then threatened to commit suicide by overdosing on pills, and used a machete to attempt and break into the room where Glennon was hiding with their son. She was convicted on felony charges of domestic battery and intimdation, and she's currently on probation. Later, audio recordings were released in which Amber could be heard verbally abusing Andrew, and in one she even admitted to punching him in the face. There's no contact between them now, and Amber has been allowed visits with their son. h96 tv box

Where do we even begin? Jenelle and David have always gotten in awful fights, and they've only gotten worse as time has gone on. In the beginning, they argued a lot, but a couple of years ago, she called 911 in hysterics, claiming he pushed her down so hard she thought he'd broken her collarbone. She called again a few months later because she'd locked him outside and he was beating the door down. Last year, she left him for a while after he killed her dog, which resulted in them losing temporary custody of the kids, and she even got a restraining order against him after telling a judge she feared for her life. She went back to him, but things definitely haven't been good -- she recently left him again and threatened to get a restraining order. She didn't, and we guess things are supposed to be OK right now, but it's only a matter of time until things get bad again.

YEAR OF THE GHOST DOG

[TL;DR version for the New Yorker -- I loved many great short songs and became obsessed with (1) a very old, much longer one (2) and YouTube comments this year.]  [links to previous year’s lists at the bottom]

A while back, I found myself in an extended funk. The reasons are uninteresting and honestly a bit dumb, a mix of everyday bummers and more existential stuff, all of which manifested in a kind of 360º sluggishness. I couldn’t really figure my way out of it but I believed that I would eventually stop feeling this way.

One night, I saw that someone online was selling a copy of the Emulations “These Are the Things,” a magnificent soul ballad 7″ out of Oakland. I wasn’t exactly homesick for the Bay Area, but something about the song’s roots, as well as its overwhelming feeling of optimistic yearning, resonated with (through?) me. There’s a moment when the singer’s falsetto peaks, and the piano starts cascading, and things feel like they’re going to work out after all. The copy for sale wasn’t in great shape, and it cost $100, an extravagant amount of money to spend on a piece of music. But I convinced myself that I’d feel better at some point, weeks, months, or years later, and I’d listen to my Emulations single, and recall that weird summer/fall.

As often happened with independently produced records of the sixties and seventies, “These Are the Things” was pressed on styrene, rather than vinyl. Styrene is a kind of plastic that’s lighter, cheaper and much more fragile than vinyl, and you can tell the difference by a kind of hollow plink when you put it on a turntable. Styrene also means that it has a limited life, and that each time the needle drags across its grooves, the record degrades a little bit. Over time, styrene records that get played a lot no longer sound as crisp or clear (or so it seems). I listened to it once it arrived, feeling a bit of regret at this wild expenditure, but also imagining my future self’s gratitude. I imagined entering into communion with everyone who had played this copy before me. I decided to only listen to the song once a year, if that--after all, each time I listened to the record, the song was changing, slightly.

A few months later, I felt normal (whatever that means) again, and the record became a marker of...I’m not sure what--maybe a kind of blind, stubborn optimism. Someone years later uploaded the song onto YouTube, which means I can listen to it whenever I want. This fall, I was trying and failing to spend less time on the Internet. But I decided that, instead of going on Twitter and Facebook, I would just read comments fans left on YouTube. I became obsessed with reading all the intimate histories people shared with one another--the chance encounters, the teenage dates and breakups, the seventies shop owners who recalled the days when stocking the right hit single could cover an entire month’s rent. I was listening to the Emulations when I noticed this comment, from Deric Jackson, who was apparently one of the group’s members: “I sung this song when I was 19yrs old. It was a pleasure to record and send this messageout into the airways. I have been with the women that God had given me to marry when I was 22yrs old. I did not understand at that time I was singing about my own life and the women who I had not met, but how wonderful it is to be with my wife fo 35yrs and life is still a breath of fresh air and wonderful. I would like to say to all real men love your wife, never worship her only one to worship is God alone.“ I’m pretty agnostic about most things relating to providence. But I felt as though I had been living in these words: “I did not understand at that time...” Jackson’s song was a prophecy, maybe even a conjuring, of his own path, and I wonder what he hears when he listens to it now. Sometimes you don’t know what’s coming next. But there’s always another song, and it doesn’t always sound the same as the last time.

Jefferson grabbed his phone off his desk and headed out the door, eager to leave his office and the Capitol before he could be detained yet again. Madison had left over thirty minutes ago and was probably eagerly waiting for Jefferson to bring home dinner. Once he was safely in his car, Jefferson shot him a text.Hey hon I’m finally out. What do you want to eat tonight?Can you bring in a pizza?

Not exactly surprising coming from Madison, but pizza hadn’t been at the top of the list since Jefferson had seen him eating a slice at lunch earlier that week. Still, who was he to deny the love of his life his favorite meal?Of course hon.As soon as Jefferson pulled out of the parking lot, another text followed. At the first red light, he glanced at it.CANCELHe didn’t have time to respond before he got moving again, so he simply changed his course from the pizza parlour to Madison’s house. He probably had a surge of heartburn and wanted something gentler for dinner.As he made his way up the walk, Jefferson did a mental inventory of what was in Madison’s fridge, trying to plan something he could throw together quickly. He opened the front door and called out; “Hon, I cancelled the pizza!”When Jefferson caught sight of Madison seated in the living room with his parents, he realized that the man had meant cancel the visit. Madison looked more resigned than anything, so Jefferson hoped that meant Madison wasn’t mad that he’d misinterpreted the message.“Mr. and Mrs. Madison,” Jefferson greeted. “I didn’t see a car outside.”“We took a mover,” Mr. Madison said, standing to shake Jefferson’s hand.“An Uber, Love,” Mrs. Madison corrected. She put her arms around Jefferson, pulling him into a tight hug. “It’s good to see you, Thomas.”“Good to see you, too,” Jefferson said as the couple sat back down. He didn’t take a seat of his own, wondering if he could maybe still make an escape. Madison was digging his fingers into the armrest of his chair and looking more and more like he wanted to become liquid and be absorbed into the seat cushion. “What, uh, brings you into town?”“We just wanted to see our boy and take him to a nice dinner,” Mrs. Madison said. “You too, of course. So I’m glad to hear you cancelled your pizza.”Jefferson cleared his throat. “That’s a very kind invitation, but while I can get away with having dinner with my best friend in public, having dinner with his parents might be a bit conspicuous.”“Fair point,” Mr. Madison said. “Maybe we could order in after all.”“I have a better idea,” Mrs. Madison said. “Jimmy, why don’t you drive somewhere and pick us up something?”Jefferson saw Madison stiffen. “Why don’t I go?” he said quickly. “James is already comfortable and I haven’t even sat down yet.”“He is absolutely not comfortable,” Mrs. Madison said. All right, baby?”Madison took a deep breath and let it out slowly, his fingers loosening from the armrests. “All right,” he said, pushing himself to his feet. “Chili fries are happening, and you can’t stop it.”Once Madison was out the door, Jefferson finally gave in and took a seat.“So….” he said, now that it was clear that the person they were really there to see was him. “What would you have done if we’d gone out to dinner?”“Asked you to drive us while Jimmy drove himself,” Mrs. Madison said. “Same reason, to let him catch his breath.”“Well, the chili dog place has pretty fast service, so what did you need to talk to me about?”“Here’s the thing,” Mr. Madison said. “The other day, Fanny was–”“Taylor, honey,” Mrs. Madison cut in.“Right. The other day Taylor was laughing at her phone, and when I asked her what was so funny she showed me one of those, uh, those pictures with words that people like to post around Facebook.”“A meme?” Jefferson offered.“Yeah, one of those. Jimmy had sent it to her, and I guess it was supposed to be funny somehow, and I don’t remember exactly what it said and she never told me how to find it on my phone, but it was something about suicide.”“Well, sir, from what I understand, that seems to be the kind of thing that kids today find funny.”“I know that. That’s why I’m not worried about Fa- about Taylor. But Jimmy is the one who sent it to her, and he’s not some ‘kid today’ with a weird sense of humor. He’s a grown man with a… history of worrying behavior.”“Jimmy has always been a bit… morbid,” Mrs. Madison added. “I’m sure it has to do with his first baby sister dying. But it really got concerning after that boy from Princeton passed away.”Jefferson furrowed his brow; he didn’t know about Madison losing a friend in college. “What boy from Princeton?”“If he hasn’t told you, I’m not sure we should.”Madison’s father put a hand on Mrs. Madison’s knee.“Nelly, the context matters here.”She sighed, putting her hand on his and squeezing before continuing.“His roommate passed away the summer after their first year. Jimmy went really hard into school after that. We didn’t think much of it because he was already going hard into school before that, but we didn’t realize it was worse this time. Towards the end of his second year, he passed out in class. Exhaustion, dehydration, low blood sugar. Now, you know Jimmy’s not a healthy-living kind of person, but that was downright negligent, and just not like him. We asked him what happened and he said why try to take care of yourself when you can just drop dead out of nowhere on a beautiful day?”“That’s what happened to the Princeton boy?”“Yes. He had a heart condition no one knew about. We took Jimmy home from the hospital. His grades were excellent, and the school was worried about how it looked for one of their students to have a breakdown, so they let him take his finals late. Ever since then we’ve had to keep an eye on him in case he ever got too self-destructive—or got more direct. You’re the closest one to him now, geographically and emotionally. You’re the one who can keep the best eye on him, and I’m sure you have. How has he been?”Jefferson took a moment, having to recontextualize his own observations and ideas about the man he loved with this information that had been previously withheld from him. The Madisons seemed to understand this, not prompting him to speak sooner.“He’s not the worst I’ve seen him,” Jefferson said finally. “If he’s making jokes about it with his sister, then he’s probably mostly fine. I think if it was something he was really thinking about, he’d avoid the topic. You know how nervous he gets about saying the wrong thing. I’ve actually been here a couple minutes, but I was worried about the chili fries getting soggy and cold.”Jefferson glanced over his shoulder at Madison’s parents. Mrs. Madison stood up. “Bring the food in, baby. I’ll set the table.”“You don’t need to set the table for chili fries,” Madison said as he moved past Jefferson to join his mother heading for the kitchen.Jefferson shook his head and let out a sigh before closing and locking the door. When he turned to move to the kitchen, Mr. Madison had stood up as well. Summary: Recruiting Estela doesn’t seem too hard, but who’s side is she on?

“Estela Montoya.” Mike notes, as a sleepy Taylor barely sits up in her bed.

“You’re up early.” She comments, furrowing her eyebrows at him.

Did he recite some sort of name at her?

“Couldn’t sleep too well. If what you’re saying is true, we have to solve this mystery fast.” Mike explained, munching on a leftover piece of cold pizza left from last night.

He threw one Taylor’s way and she was lucky enough to catch it before it gracefully hit her in the face.

She shook her head, but bit in the cold pizza, savoring it’s taste.

There was something about college food that made it both disgusting and delicious at the same time.

She chuckled to herself as she continued. “You were saying?” She asks, getting back into Mike’s previous words.

“Estela Montoya.” He notes again.

“What about her?” Taylor knew her from around campus. They might’ve had a few classes together, too.

A quiet yet intimidating girl, that seemed to have just the right amount of scary in her.

“She’s our next lead.” Mike shows a photo of her, even though Taylor already knows how she looks.

“Why?” She asks.

“She’s the daughter of the scientist Rourke was fooling around with. And from what I’ve gathered... She hates his guts.” 

“I have a class with her today.” Taylor points out after checking her timetable.

“Then I’ll talk to her.” She added. Mike nodded, agreeing.

“It’s almost semester’s break, so we should work fast.” He tells her.

“Already?” Taylor’s eyes widen in shock. She barely blinked and the semester was almost over.

It feels as if just yesterday she first confided in Mike with her weird dreams.

Now look where it got them.

Mike nodded, and laid back on his bed. They didn’t have classes for at least an hour, and could rest a little before actually getting up.

Taylor rested her head over her pillow as well, as memories of the last night flooded back to her mind.

She had more, of those dreams, lately.

She didn’t tell Mike, though. Not because she didn’t trust him - Nothing like that, but because they were getting more and more ridiculous.

Time travel? Yetis? Ice foxes and blue people? Sabertoothed tigers?

She could remember more and more details, too, but nothing that made sense. 

She still couldn’t make out the faces of her friends, in those dreams.

Oh, and one last thing.

She was pretty sure she was married in those dreams.

But that couldn’t be true, right?

She wasn’t even in love... With anyone.

So get married?

Nah.

She shook her head to herself, and wrapped up in the blanket, setting an alarm clock for a little bit later.

She’ll have a nice nap and forget about all of this.

"Vanuu! Answer me!” Taylor hears her own voice once again.

A clear figure makes its way towards her, and Taylor takes once hesitant step back.

“Vanuu?” Her voice wavers.

The figure glows with something, and presents it to Taylor.

Taylor looks down at his hand, and then back up at the figure’s face.

In the spurt of the moment, she takes them in hand.

Looking down at her hand, she sees it. Dog-tags. 

Why would Vanuu give her dog-tags, anyway?

Before she can wonder, Vanuu speaks, but she doesn’t see their lips move, just hears a voice inside her own head.

“Protect him”

Right after that, she jolts awake.

Gasping for air, she tries to wrap her mind around her newest dream.

It was different than before, but still... Equally weird. It gave her the sensation it was related to the others, but at the same time something was more important about this dream.

She had more dreams lately and yet all of them faded into the background in comparison to this one.

Who’s Vanuu? Who does he want her to protect?

Those are questions she’d have to put off for later, since she has to get ready and head to class already.

She headed to class. More confused than before, but determined with a mission.

She suddenly heard an engine roaring beside her, and saw a dark haired girl on a motorcycle passing beside her.

She caught a glimpse of the girl and then her eyes lighted up. Estela!

She watched as Estela parked her bike, and walked over to her.

“Estela Montoya?” She asked, maybe a little too formally.

Estela raised her gaze to her, startled.

After a few seconds of studying her up, Estela got off her bike and faced Taylor.

“Yes,” She nodded.

“Hi. I’m Taylor. We have history class together. Wanna walk with me?” She extended her hand.

Estela hesitated but grasped her hand, lightly, and shook it.

She seemed as if she didn’t know herself why she did it, but just rolled with it. 

“Sure.”

Jake stood in front of his mirror in his old house.

It was so weird being here again, and yet - So exciting.

He was filled with a warm feeling of joy whenever he stepped inside his house, knowing he had a loving family who supported him, that he was finally free to visit.

Also, the fact that Mike was there, not that far away from him, was the best thing that could’ve possibly happen.

Not only that Jake got to be happy, reunited with his family, but so did Mike and hadn’t the whole story with Rourke in Costa-Rica happened, maybe Jake could’ve been truly one-hundred percent happy for the first time since he left the army and escaped Lundgren.

He sighed, before reaching for his razor.

Time to say goodbye to his beard.

His mom urged him to shave it.

“You’ll never get a date with that rusty beard of yours.” She teased, and felt a teen all over again.

“Who said I was planning on scoring a date?” He frowned at her but his mother was a stubborn woman, and the beard probably reminded her of all the time Jake was away.

He understood why she’d want that away.

Smirking to himself and starting to shave it off, he finally listened to her advice.

“Mom, I’m off,” He said, walking down the stairs.

“Again??” She asked, almost saddened.

“Yeah I need to meet a friend.” He tells her.

Well, he could call Estela a friend - if she actually remembered who he was.

Somehow, Jake doubted it would be an easy task…

The moment he’s at the bottom of the stairway, his mother’s whole face lights up.

He shaved the beard.

She collects him into her arms, and Jake chuckles nervously but hugs back.

“See you soon.” She smiles, and lets go off him.

He nods and goes on his way.

“So, this is gonna sound weird, but I was wondering if you could tell me anything about your mother?” Taylor asked, her eyebrows arching upwards into a hesitant but hopeful expression.

Had she had the luxury of time she would’ve taken her time, got to know Estela, got past her walls and friendly asked her about it, but she didn’t have that luxury, so desperate times called for desperate measures. 

“Anything at all?” She added.

Not only she suspected Jake, Aliester and their friends, but she also had a really, really bad gut feeling that something was about to happen soon,

And both she and Mike would have to work fast to stop it from happening.

Estela looked her up and down, as if she was seeing her for the first time.

Usually, Estela was this quiet, distant and a little hostile girl, who everyone were both mesmerized by but terrified off.

Most people preferred to stay away from her, since she was too much for them to handle.

But as far as Taylor could remember, she was always nice to Estela. Their interactions didn’t go past sharing a couple of pens during exams, but it was a beginning, right?

She looked Estela up, studying her features. Her glance was unreadable, her lips sealed in a narrow line, and face stiff.

Taylor thought she’d made a mistake, she bet all she had and lost everything, before Estela’s eyes glistened in something familiar, and her confused and stern expression broke into a grin.

Was that a yes?

“Sure.” She said. “But why don’t you tell me about yours first?”

Taylor gulped.

Well, that was an unexpected turn of events, but Estela wasn’t being unfair.

Fine.

She took a deep breathe. “She passed away my freshman year.” She admitted.

The memories flooding her mind, only...

That something felt incredibly forged with the images in her mind.

She remember it happening to her, but... It felt as if it had happened to someone else. It felt as if Taylor was witnessing someone else’s loss.

Her grief and pain were real, but the memories seemed wrong, somehow.

She shook her head and ignored it.

“Oh.” Estela looked as if she regretted asking, but Taylor hurried to reassure her. “I’m sorry--”

“-It’s okay. My aunt kind of took care of me. Me and Mike visited her over the course of the last holiday season. We really had a blast.” She smiled at her.

There was something melancholic about her smile, but it was an honest one.

Estela must’ve seen that, before she nodded. “Okay.”

After that, it seemed Estela was ready to cooperate completely. “What do you want to know?”

Jake made his way towards the local Hartfelt cafe. It seemed Aliester and the gang from La-Huerta really liked spending their time there.

He walked through the doors and was surprised to see Taylor was there as well.

He spotted her sitting in a distant corner along with Estela, the person he was supposed to get to first.

Well, screw that.

Maybe he still had a chance, though.

Aliester waved him from the other side of the cafe and Jake made his way towards him.

“What’s up?” He asked, sitting down.

After ordering something and getting an update from Aliester, Jake sat back in his chair and waited for the right moment to approach Estela.

“So you think she remembers?” He asked Aliester, wondering how hard is it gonna be to convince her to help them.

“I talked to her earlier today. She agreed to meet up, and while she didn’t really give away whether or not she has regained her memories... Well, she was awfully nice to me.”

“Then she must remember.” Jake snorted.

“I thought so too.”

Estela told Taylor everything she wanted to know.

Even the things she didn’t really like.

She told her about Olivia and how she worked for Rourke for years.

She told her what an outstanding scientist she was. She told her about the... Less legal work Olivia got to do for Rourke Internationals.

She also told her how Olivia didn’t agree with Rourke’s course of actions, and how eventually she turned against him - even though she had an affair with him at one point.

“So, Roruke didn’t run away because the news about his affair got out, he ran away because-”

“My mom almost exposed him, yeah.” Estela nodded, confirming.

Taylor gulped. “Can I ask...”

“He killed her.” Estela shut her eyes, still pained and furious with Rourke...

But the memories of La-Huerta and how she’s grown past that soothed her. She took a deep breathe, and reopened her eyes, sending a weak smile towards Taylor.

Taylor took her hands in hers and thanked her.

“That couldn’t have been an easy story to share.”

Estela just shook her head. “You’re going after Rourke, aren’t you?” She asked, in a half smile.

“How did you know?--”

“Whatever helps you in your investigation.”

Taylor nodded, maybe a little too fast but at least she was getting somewhere.

She was about to continue the conversation with Estela when she noticed a familiar figure striding their way.

She was so deep in conversation with Estela prior to that, that she never even noticed him coming into the cafe.

“Ladies.” Jake approaches them, his signature smile smeared over his lips.

She looks up to him, and something’s different about him.

He shaved off his beard and suddenly Taylor’s chest filled with a warm, confusing feeling.

Wait, what? No you can’t do that, don’t be silly!!

“Wow… You- You look-” Taylor mumbles, before she can stop it as she examines him thoroughly.

“I look?” He smirks at her.

He doesn’t know what gotten into him, but he uses a mischievously flirty tone.

Maybe to annoy her even more, now that he knows she doesn’t like him.

He didn’t have to try to ‘impress’ anymore, so he could let loose and have fun all he wanted.

She blushes. “Different.” She blurts out.

Plan worked.

Jake snorts and walks past her, leaning over the table closer to Estela.

“May I have a word with you, please?” He asked nicely, sending Estela a knowing look, making sure Taylor wouldn’t see that.

Estela considered for a second before agreeing.

“I’ll be back in a minute,” She promised Taylor, and took off with Jake.

Personally, I like the fact that I’m detail-oriented. Wrestlers write autobiographies ALL THE TIME which means that not all of them will be a home run, and AJ’s was neither earth-shattering nor bad. I definitely didn’t appreciate the unintended-but-casual sexism/misogyny in it or the extreme hyperboles, but it’s AJ and I love her work nonetheless.

#Gotham Season 4 Episode 4 "The Demon's Head" Spoilers, Rate, and Review

…..I have no banter to start this episode review. So…..let’s just get to it. This is Gotham season 4 episode 4, “The Demon’s Head”.

            Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) take the embalming knife of the Mesopotamian King Balahsi to be inspected by an antiques expert of the natural history museum in Gotham, Niles Winthrop (Dakin Matthews) and his budding antiques expert grandson Alex (Benjamin Stockman). Both of them seem to take a very particular interest in the knife. Bruce gives them the knife to gather as much information as they can for one day.

Meanwhile, Edward Nygma (Corey Michael Smith) is residing in a creepy, poorly lit room, complete with newspapers and articles placed all over the walls, to create a good enough riddle to take out Oswald as well as prove to himself that he has not lost his Riddler touch.

            Later on that night, Winthrop takes a closer look at the knife and discovers ancient symbols on the knife that speak about “a demon’s head.” Alex asks about what the demon’s head is, and his grandfather replies that the demon’s head is not a thing, but an actual person. A thousand-year-old legend tells of a man that has the power to resurrect. That man went by the name of Ra’s al Ghul.

            It just so happens that at that moment, Ra’s al Ghul himself (Alexander Siddig) appears at the museum. Sensing that this is no ordinary guest at the museum, but an intruder, Niles orders Alex to go and hide until help arrives.

            Of course, Ra’s got word that Bruce Wayne had dropped off the embalming knife for a night in the museum, and has stopped by to procure it. Despite being interrogated and threatened, Niles does not give up information as to where the knife is. Ra’s then snaps his neck, killing him instantly, leaving Alex alone to hide and cry in the dark.

               Hours later, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is called to investigate the scene of the crime in the museum. Bruce tries to get involvedand reveals Alex’s involvement in the situation. Bruce also mentions that someone else seemed to be interested in the knife other than Ra’s: Barbara Kean (Erin Richards).

            Speaking of whom, Ra’s meets up with Barbara to introduce a man-dog like a creature named Anubis. Ra’s has brought out Anubis to track down the knife and Bruce Wayne……..seriously, look at him.

            At the Iceberg Lounge, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) has a meeting with Sofia Falcone (Crystal Reed), with Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan) present.

            Gordon goes off to interrogate Barbara, but their meeting is awesomely interrupted by Bruce, who is very passionately angry about Ra’s putting Alex, an innocent, through the exact tragedy that Bruce is familiar with. He accuses her of working with Ra’s….so obviously, Barbara denies it with her sass.

            Jim and Bruce go to the museum library to find Alex when they’re suddenly attacked by Anubis and his new trainer and assassin (Owen Harn), who speaks in what appears to be in an ancient dialect. They are searching for the knife. He and Jim have a little scuffle and manage to beat some mess out of them and head on out to the precinct, however, Bruce and Alex have apparently escaped.

            At the precinct, speak of the Demon’s Head, Ra’s al Ghul arrives and wants to talk with Gordon under the guise of a Namba Parbat officer. (For those who do not know what that is, Namba Parbat is a place in the DC comics. Kind of like Shangri-La). While being questioned by Jim, Alfred barges in the office and goes all bad ass butler on Jim and Ra’s, demanding to know where Bruce is. After Alfred recognizes him, Ra’s seems to vanish from the area.

   Sofia meets up with a few of loyal mob members of Carmine, but are interrupted by Penguin and Victor Zsasz (Anthony Carrigan). While Zsasz takes care of the mobsters the only way, he knows how Cobblepot takes Sofia to another room to have a chat. In actuality, Cobblepot used Sofia to weed out any traitors to avoid any more competition. It’s a new Gotham. And there’s a new way of doing things. Oswald then receives another message from Edward’s messengers to have another meeting in another location since the last one was such a bust.

                Bruce and Alex manage to escape and flee to the National Museum and get the knife but are once again attacked by Anubis and the assassin. Jim Gordon arrives on the scene and takes care of both of them. Unfortunately, another guest has arrived late at the museum. Ra’s appears and holds Alex hostage at knifepoint, demanding the knife in exchange for Alex’s safety. Jim urges Bruce to give him the knife. But a very torn Bruce can’t just give Ra’s the knife. If a man that dangerous wants the knife for something, there’s no telling what may happen. Impressed by his unwilling heir, Ra’s slits Alex’s throat and lets himself be caught and taken to Blackgate Prison.

           Fed up with Oswald not showing up to either one of his riddled locations, Edward storms into his lounge, waving a gun and ranting. Oswald appears and explains to Edward that he did not show up to any location was because well….his riddles sucked. They weren’t clever and could not have one distinct answer. And in spite of Edward’s claim of them being right, his riddles were completely illogical and nonsensical. Adding insult to injury, Cobblepot points out that Edward’s intellect has been damaged and gone and that he is not the Riddler anymore. He’s barely even Edward Nygma.

            Bringing him out for an encore, Cobblepot calls out Victor Fries (Nathan Darrow) to freeze him again. Once Edward seems to be completely reluctant to be frozen again, Oswald decides not to freeze him, feeling that Edward not living and being known as the Riddler is humiliation enough than being a frozen centerpiece.

Jim and Sofia make out and do it.

            The last thing we see is Ra’s al Ghul being taken into Blackgate. Being escorted by the police and arriving at the gate, Ra’s smiles.

This episode was written by, wait for it……..are you waiting?......I hope you are, cause this episode was written by Ben Mackenzie himself! Well done! Showing off your mad directing and writing skills in Gotham.

            I know I haven’t done my likes and dislikes in a while, but this new schedule change for Gotham is still sort of causing my schedule with work and everything to become somewhat hectic, so please, bear with me for now.

            But one thing I really did love is the talk between Alex and Bruce. It had some sort of magnitude to it. It was, I guess, weirdly cool....

I’d give this episode an 8.5/10

Lukewarm Stove: Trading Pederson to Sign Pollock, Cardinals Extensions, Bogus Pirates Rumors, More

Although I’ve come to terms with the Cubs’ budget this winter, one thing remains elusive: What happened to the Cubs trade rumors? I’m very much not rooting for a trade right now – especially any trade involving guys like Kyle Schwarber or Ian Happ, because I’m still high on each still – but it’s weird right? Especially as the trade market has been so ripe with transactions.

I suppose a busy market filled with alternative trade partners can lower the perceived/market prices of Cubs youngsters, but I still expected more noise than we’ve heard. And, sure, we’ve been warned of core-player trades for several years now without much action, but this winter really felt like it could be different. I’m not sure I’m bothered by it, because I like the Cubs core, but I do find it odd.

Speaking of confusing winters … the Los Angeles Dodgers, who earlier traded outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig (plus starting pitcher Alex Wood) to the Reds, are apparently also now considering moving a third outfielder this offseason, Joc Pederson. The White Sox have come up among the interested parties, perhaps as a backup to missing out on Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, but they’re not alone.

One thing’s for sure, though: If the Dodgers are really trade away four big leaguers, including *three* outfielders in one offseason, they’re obviously going to turn their full attention to Bryce Harper, as expec… wut?

I’m not saying A.J. Pollock isn’t a good player and doesn’t make sense for the Dodgers, but being right-handed does not make up for the fact that he’s nowhere close to the hitter Bryce Harper is. He’s also five years older with an even scarier injury history. I can’t understand why the Dodgers would be out on Harper, but in on Pollock, after clearing so much money off the books. Well, I mean, I *can* think of a reason why, but it’s pretty lame for a team with as much revenue as the Dodgers.

Circling back to Joc Pederson, the Braves have also apparently checked in on the 26-year-old left-handed slugger, but they haven’t ruled out free agency either (Adam Jones, Carlos Gonzalez, Gerardo Parra, Nick Markakis, and others). Again, if there’s a trade out there for Pederson, there’s probably one for Ian Happ and/or Kyle Schwarber, but there may just be too many options out there for a trade partner to feel any upwards pressure on the acquisition cost. The Cubs may be best off holding onto these guys and hoping they play themselves into a higher tier of value (and they can always keep them, themselves). Moreover, what would the Cubs even target in trade right now with those guys, other than attaching them to a salary dump so that they could make some other move? So many moving parts, and you might not be all that much better for it in the end.

Hey, remember when the Cardinals traded for one of the best players in baseball this winter? Yeah, well, they still intend on trying to extend Paul Goldschmidt beyond his one year of remaining team control and they’re not being shy about it. Owner Bill DeWitt Jr. and President John Mozeliak have both publicly signaled their intentions and are preparing a pitch. Although Goldschmidt could probably sign a deal at any time – after he learns more about the organization, for example – but they’ll probably want to get something done before the season starts. Because if they don’t, they can always flip him at the deadline if things go awry for the team.

Relatedly, the Cardinals are no longer interested in trading Jose Martinez, who was displaced by the addition of Goldschmidt and re-commitment to Dexter Fowler. Martinez, 30, has been quite the offensive force in his three big league seasons (130 wRC+), but he’s extremely limited defensively, and might otherwise make more sense in the AL. Nonetheless, the Cardinals did not find appropriate value for him on the trade market, so it sounds like he’s sticking around. He’s not a bad insurance policy for Goldschmidt – in the short and long term – so that’s not a bad idea. Of course, if a great offer comes along from a DH-needy team, I wouldn’t count out a trade.

The Cardinals are also in talks to extend starter Miles Mikolas, 30, who reclaimed his career after returning from Japan last season. According to Derrick Goold, Mikolas’ extension could be worth as much as Mike Leake’s 5-year, $80M deal with the Mariners, and if that is, indeed, the case, I’d be happy to watch them sink that money. Mikolas was legitimately good last season, but color me skeptical that he’ll repeat a 2.83 ERA, 3.28 FIP season again. Let’s see if the league adjusts back to a guy whom no one saw for four years before giving him $80M. Or, actually, never mind … it’s the Cardinals. Give him $100M.

Yesterday, there was a random report floating around that the Pirates were actually the mystery team on Manny Machado. Jon Heyman has heard otherwise:

Although I can understand the theoretical positional fit and the theoretical availability of money considering a lack of other large commitments, the Pirates are just not going to drop that much money on Machado now (or maybe ever), and that’s without considering the already competitive NL Central.

The Rangers are inking Asdrubal Cabrera to a cheap deal as they continue to grab possibly-flippable pieces:

I’m surprised the Brewers didn’t jump on that, given that they need a third baseman or a second baseman, and Cabrera can handle both with a solid stick. Makes you wonder if a re-up with Mike Moustakas is the preference.

Speaking of which, Ken Rosenthal says the Padres and Phillies are interested, as well. Obviously, the Phillies interest might be contingent upon some other, bigger deals they have brewing at the moment, but it’s still unclear when any of that will resolve itself. The Phillies might also consider Josh Harrison, instead of Moustakas, if they miss out on Manny Machado, but, again, so much of this depends on what happens with the two big dogs.

And unfortunately, there’s really been no update on either guy lately, other than, I don’t know, more confirmation the Cubs are legitimately out and the Dodgers’ continued lack of interest. The Phillies, it seems, have almost no big-market competition for Machado and I’m still suspicious about the Nationals’ interest in paying Bryce Harper, so there might not be too much competition on that front, either. Silence from the Cubs, Dodgers, and Yankees on Harper/Machado is making a record contract so very difficult for Harper and Machado to land.

Rewatching “Transformers”

Yep, the Michael Bay one.  Because I felt like it and it’s the only Transformer movie I enjoy as a guilty pleasure.  Dab.

I like how they put the transformer noise over the shooting stars for the Paramount logo.

Compared to the other movies in this series that I’ve seen (Revenge of the Fallen and Age of Extinction), this one actually feels a little more... slow... like they take more time to explain things instead of just throwing explosion porn at you.  I mean, they still do in this movie and I consider this one to be the un-laziest in this series.

“Spooky 3-2, use 1-0-5 shells.  Bring the rain.”  The best line in this movie.  Hands down.

Me and my sister pretty much quote this entire scene where Maggie goes to consult Glenn about the signal, including the “SHUT UP GRANDMAAAA!” and “GET OFF MY GRANDMAMA’S CARPET!”

“We’re not told where they’re going.”  Of course because the Hover-round takes them where they wanna go.

That’s the same hologram dude who was the helicopter Decepticon in the beginning and now he’s in the police car.

Dude, the random rock music?  What?

Barricade just said “AIYAIYAIAYAIYAIIII!” as a battle cry.  I can’t take that seriously.

Six Tips for Better Communication & Connection

I might sound like the worst millennial when I say thing, but nothing drives me up the wall more than when I’m out with a friend, family member, or my husband and they spend all of their time staring at their phone.

I’m sure there’s a lot that could be taken away about me as a person from that statement, but at the end of the day we can all agree - it’s a bad feeling when someone you love accidentally makes you feel unvalued.

In the spirit of working on connections in your life, let’s talk about a few ways that you can be a better communicator with the people in your world - and how you can set the stage for how you want to be treated.

Set Time Aside

If this is with your partner, it might look like a weekly date night.  Or maybe it’s monthly brunch with your besties, or a particular workout class with your work buddies.  Whatever it is, schedule that time to focus on just connecting with the people you’re spending time with.  Mark it off in your calendar, silence your phone, and give it your all!

Especially if this is with close friends or a partner, you could even take turns planning out adventures.  Maybe there’s a local park that you’ve always wanted to explore, or a new paint & sip place opened up locally.  Great! Check it out and try something new - you never know what might turn out to be a new favorite!

Express Appreciation

I can personally be really bad at this, but take time to thank the people in your life who go above and beyond when they do something.  My husband, because he’s an unsung hero, will almost always take out the gross trash without being asked.  He also makes sure to take care of the dog at night when I find the yard spooky, and he gets the mail every single day without fail.

All these little things felt like nothing to me - until he deployed and I was overwhelmed by all the things I needed him for.

Especially if you’re friends with or in relationship with someone who’s love language is words of affirmation, this is a big way to show someone how much you appreciate all that they do for you, and how much it means to you. 

Be Open and Honest

I know that this is a tough one, because in a lot of ways we’ve been conditioned as a society to first act like nothing is an issue to maintain the peace, and then eventually blow up about something small and make it into a huge deal.

But rather then letting things fester under your skin, call attention and speak honestly about things that are causing your stress, hurting your feelings, guilty, or just in general causing you to feel icky.  It’s uncomfortable in the moment for sure - but the more you let things like this fester and get under your skill, the more you’re risking isolating yourself from someone important to you.  

It’s always better to have a productive conversation about the things that come up, rather then eventually exploding because of something else unrelated.

Don’t Hide Your Weird Side

Look, your best friends and partner have probably all seen you on your worst days and still love you- so why is it that you’re pretending you don’t listen to Backstreet Boys and that you’re super excited for the Taylor Swift documentary?

Be real about who you are, and connect with people over it!  Maybe they won’t get it - but I promise you, there’s something weird that they’re into that to you is totally bonkers.

For instance, I absolutely love Harry Potter.  I have them all on Audible, and when I’m sick or stressed, I listen to them. My husband has not only never seen or read them, he once announced that when he watched it in Spanish class, there were no wands. Clearly he has a limited interest. 

On the flip side, he loves to collect bottles and research their history - which is a bit of a snooze fest to me, to be honest. 

But we both support and embrace the other’s weirdness, because it’s what makes us fun together - and also, strangely effective at trivia.  Don’t hide the parts of you that are silly or different - just enjoy them with the people you love!

Be a Safe Harbor

This ties into the last point, but essentially learn to accept people in your life as they are, and don’t be a jerk.  If people feel comfortable and safe around you, they’re more likely to connect with you and be real about themselves.

In a way, it’s easier to explain what not to do here - don’t be the person who is always saying mean things about everyone else, don’t focus on the bad over the good, and don’t shoot down your friends or partners goals.

Instead, focus on being that positive inspiration for people, support their goals, and speak praise before negativity.

If there are people in your life currently where you simply can’t be this person for them, you have to ask yourself - is this person worth keeping in my life? 

Make Eye Contact

When you’re talking to someone, for goodness sake - make eye contact.  Staring at your phone gives the impression that you’re not really paying attention.  Instead, look people in the eye when you’re chatting, or at least when you’re listening to show that you’re engaged in the conversation.

Lukewarm Stove: Trading Pederson to Sign Pollock, Cardinals Extensions, Bogus Pirates Rumors, More

Although I’ve come to terms with the Cubs’ budget this winter, one thing remains elusive: What happened to the Cubs trade rumors? I’m very much not rooting for a trade right now – especially any trade involving guys like Kyle Schwarber or Ian Happ, because I’m still high on each still – but it’s weird right? Especially as the trade market has been so ripe with transactions.

I suppose a busy market filled with alternative trade partners can lower the perceived/market prices of Cubs youngsters, but I still expected more noise than we’ve heard. And, sure, we’ve been warned of core-player trades for several years now without much action, but this winter really felt like it could be different. I’m not sure I’m bothered by it, because I like the Cubs core, but I do find it odd.

Speaking of confusing winters … the Los Angeles Dodgers, who earlier traded outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig (plus starting pitcher Alex Wood) to the Reds, are apparently also now considering moving a third outfielder this offseason, Joc Pederson. The White Sox have come up among the interested parties, perhaps as a backup to missing out on Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, but they’re not alone.

One thing’s for sure, though: If the Dodgers are really trade away four big leaguers, including *three* outfielders in one offseason, they’re obviously going to turn their full attention to Bryce Harper, as expec… wut?

I’m not saying A.J. Pollock isn’t a good player and doesn’t make sense for the Dodgers, but being right-handed does not make up for the fact that he’s nowhere close to the hitter Bryce Harper is. He’s also five years older with an even scarier injury history. I can’t understand why the Dodgers would be out on Harper, but in on Pollock, after clearing so much money off the books. Well, I mean, I *can* think of a reason why, but it’s pretty lame for a team with as much revenue as the Dodgers.

Circling back to Joc Pederson, the Braves have also apparently checked in on the 26-year-old left-handed slugger, but they haven’t ruled out free agency either (Adam Jones, Carlos Gonzalez, Gerardo Parra, Nick Markakis, and others). Again, if there’s a trade out there for Pederson, there’s probably one for Ian Happ and/or Kyle Schwarber, but there may just be too many options out there for a trade partner to feel any upwards pressure on the acquisition cost. The Cubs may be best off holding onto these guys and hoping they play themselves into a higher tier of value (and they can always keep them, themselves). Moreover, what would the Cubs even target in trade right now with those guys, other than attaching them to a salary dump so that they could make some other move? So many moving parts, and you might not be all that much better for it in the end.

Hey, remember when the Cardinals traded for one of the best players in baseball this winter? Yeah, well, they still intend on trying to extend Paul Goldschmidt beyond his one year of remaining team control and they’re not being shy about it. Owner Bill DeWitt Jr. and President John Mozeliak have both publicly signaled their intentions and are preparing a pitch. Although Goldschmidt could probably sign a deal at any time – after he learns more about the organization, for example – but they’ll probably want to get something done before the season starts. Because if they don’t, they can always flip him at the deadline if things go awry for the team.

Relatedly, the Cardinals are no longer interested in trading Jose Martinez, who was displaced by the addition of Goldschmidt and re-commitment to Dexter Fowler. Martinez, 30, has been quite the offensive force in his three big league seasons (130 wRC+), but he’s extremely limited defensively, and might otherwise make more sense in the AL. Nonetheless, the Cardinals did not find appropriate value for him on the trade market, so it sounds like he’s sticking around. He’s not a bad insurance policy for Goldschmidt – in the short and long term – so that’s not a bad idea. Of course, if a great offer comes along from a DH-needy team, I wouldn’t count out a trade.

The Cardinals are also in talks to extend starter Miles Mikolas, 30, who reclaimed his career after returning from Japan last season. According to Derrick Goold, Mikolas’ extension could be worth as much as Mike Leake’s 5-year, $80M deal with the Mariners, and if that is, indeed, the case, I’d be happy to watch them sink that money. Mikolas was legitimately good last season, but color me skeptical that he’ll repeat a 2.83 ERA, 3.28 FIP season again. Let’s see if the league adjusts back to a guy whom no one saw for four years before giving him $80M. Or, actually, never mind … it’s the Cardinals. Give him $100M.

Yesterday, there was a random report floating around that the Pirates were actually the mystery team on Manny Machado. Jon Heyman has heard otherwise:

Although I can understand the theoretical positional fit and the theoretical availability of money considering a lack of other large commitments, the Pirates are just not going to drop that much money on Machado now (or maybe ever), and that’s without considering the already competitive NL Central.

The Rangers are inking Asdrubal Cabrera to a cheap deal as they continue to grab possibly-flippable pieces:

I’m surprised the Brewers didn’t jump on that, given that they need a third baseman or a second baseman, and Cabrera can handle both with a solid stick. Makes you wonder if a re-up with Mike Moustakas is the preference.

Speaking of which, Ken Rosenthal says the Padres and Phillies are interested, as well. Obviously, the Phillies interest might be contingent upon some other, bigger deals they have brewing at the moment, but it’s still unclear when any of that will resolve itself. The Phillies might also consider Josh Harrison, instead of Moustakas, if they miss out on Manny Machado, but, again, so much of this depends on what happens with the two big dogs.

And unfortunately, there’s really been no update on either guy lately, other than, I don’t know, more confirmation the Cubs are legitimately out and the Dodgers’ continued lack of interest. The Phillies, it seems, have almost no big-market competition for Machado and I’m still suspicious about the Nationals’ interest in paying Bryce Harper, so there might not be too much competition on that front, either. Silence from the Cubs, Dodgers, and Yankees on Harper/Machado is making a record contract so very difficult for Harper and Machado to land.
