honestly my bad that it took me so long to tag ou no kemono: enpei no arcana as 'queer character' considering prince tenyou unambiguously fell in love with rangetsu thinking she was a boy and even sought advice from his bi/gay brother on how to make that work.

The Leaves We Left in Autumn
the leaves we left in autumn by TheMagicSchoolBusDropOut
Kaminari grips the sides of the sink, staring at the mirror. He's all lidded eyes and tautly pulled lips
A broken sob threatens to escape him; he doesn't let himself cry. ‘Smile.’
Kaminari Denki is alright. He swears. It's okay if there are cuts on his thigh, it's fine if there are bruises on his wrists.
Just leave the thoughts behind, like the leaves they leave in Autumn.

no wait i want to hear ur thoughts on the my next life as a villainess queers... personally im leaning towards yuri bait but i could be convinced otherwise
This is gonna be steam of consciousness rather than actual thoughts because I need a nap. But essentially I feel as though whilst the fact that there are multiple female love interests whose love for Catarina is presented as being on pa with that of the boys, the fact that the boys have had more character and relationship development with Catarina does make it feel as though there is a certain amount of heteronormativity in progress.
We see declarations of love and affection from both male and female, but in terms of kissing and explicit romance we've only seen it from the boys. Which has also ALWAYS been non-consensual, so in many ways I'm HAPPY that Catarina has not been forced to experience that from any of the girls but regardless when 3/3 kisses have been from boys then one needs to start to debate whether the series is just queer bait.
It's interesting because we KNOW that the society Catarina lives in does have at least SOME tolerance towards same sex couples since she was able to find queer stories suitable for pre-teens in just the local bookshops. However at the same time, we only ever see M/F couples surrounding them! None of her fellow pupils have same-sex parents. We don't see same-sex couples wondering about. We don't have any evidence that same-sex couples exist outside of the world of fiction!
We've also not had a "But I'm a Girl?!" moment either which, on the one hand, I'm grateful for because I don't want these girls to have any ounce of heteronormativity. I want them to just fully accept their love for Catarina right away and not view it as something that needs questioning like that. However, at the same time, "But I'm a girl?!" Is SUCH a Yuri Trope that to NOT have it feels as though they're actively avoiding being seen as a Yuri series?
There's also the Yuri Manga Anthology spin off to be considered. It's advertised as being a series of Yuri side stories from the canon, but when you read it there's not much to them? They're fun enough, and obviously cannot go further than the canon does, however they don't feel especially YURI? The girls don't have any big internal confessions or draw hearts around their names or contemplate getting married. It's just... more the same.
Don't get me wrong! I think the series is a LOT of fun, and it's great to see a Bisexual Reverse Harem! It's also good to see that there isn't the same level of blatent homophobia/fetishization that you get with some of these series. Or at least in the past-- re-watching something like Ouran can be kinda YIKES at times.
So yeah, on the whole whilst it definitely presents us with some level of queer representation and content, the series' inability to commit to the female love interests in the same way it does the male ones means that -- to my mind -- it skews more towards Yuri Queer Bait than anything else.
Now this MIGHT be different in the manga and light novels! But I have only read the Yuri Anthology and seen the anime. So only have that to go off of.

weekly (monthly?) media roundup
ok so I do want to actually do these on some sort of schedule but unfortunately, as you already know, brains,
listening: Malice in Wonderland by Fangbanger, which I found from a tumblr post that described them as band for “if you have a complicated relationship with gender, had a falling out with god, hate the government, or just think that vampires are neat" and y’know? yeah. my notes on this song from several weeks ago are that I might not know any of these people’s genders but I do know they’ve listened to MCR
youtube
reading: the new Cassandra Clare book, Chain of Iron. it’s boring and homophobic. in the first book of this series, we find out that the heroine’s brother is gay and in a relationship with a man who has no intention of ever coming out publicly because 1) the book is set in 1903 in England, it was literally illegal and 2) he’s trying to have a career in politics. the heroine decides that this means he’s ashamed of her brother and doesn’t deserve him, and she is present and active in their breakup conversation.
above is the relationship chart I made from the first book, it really hasn’t changed much except now the main guy and the main girl are married, the lesbians got back together and then broke up again, the main girl’s gay brother hooked up with one of her husband’s friend, who’s a Good Gay and therefore worthy of love unlike the Bad Gay ex who is constantly mocked by just about every character for. checks notes. caring about appearances and manners given that his life and career are based on those things. the brother and his new love interest break up because the brother still thinks he’s a bad person for ever having dated his ex. also the main girl has now platonically run off to Paris with her husband’s platonic soulmate who is allegedly in love with her but it’s really unconvincing that he’s not actually in love with her husband (he’s not for very stupid lore reasons, the whole ‘parabatai are magically prevented from being romantically in love, except for these two straight people, when historically parabatai pairs were two men’ makes my fucking blood boil)
you might ask why I still read these books even though they make me angry and the answer is the 1) the aesthetic slaps 2) some of the characters are fun 3) the premise has enough potential that it could be good if it was good 4) sometimes I need to get cathartically angry abt bad fiction bc it just. does not matter
watching: so many things that I’m gonna just. run through them real quick
Word of Honor: gestures vaguely at how it’s slowly taking over my blog
Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty: love a found family, eh about the politics, can’t believe I predictably got a new fave character within the last two episodes of the show because one of the main characters is betrayed by his second-in-command and I think treason is the sexiest part of a relationship
SamBucky show: in the original draft of this post I said that it was so boring that week (episode 3) that I completely forgot about it until I saw the draft below this one talking about how bad and boring it is. at least more happened in later episodes and they’re finally giving me some tasty queerbaiting but the premise and the politics are. wow. it sure is military propaganda
My Hero Academia: new season is fun, love a tournament arc. don’t love that they tell us right away that the double agent character is a double agent, it was more fun in the manga when you’re not sure if he’s a traitor or not for a pretty long time
Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun: new season is cute, there sure is some gender happening. there’s a tsundere bisexual catgirl
Backflip!!: I usually avoid high school sports anime for backstory reasons but my roommate wanted to watch it with me and oh boy these gymnasts sure are gay for each other huh
Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood: my roommate pitched this to me as ‘cyberpunk but in the 1930s’ and there sure is dark lighting, lots of glowy neon stuff, and government oppression, which are the most important elements of cyberpunk apparently. not sure how I feel about it yet, because there’s a cool shapeshifting lady assassin with a revenge quest but there’s also a trans character who was revealed to be trans in a way that I personally did not enjoy. yes you can have transphobic villains but like. hmm. maybe the audience shouldn’t find out that someone is trans because the villain cuts his shirt away specifically to ~put him in his place. or maybe I personally am just sensitive to that but either way no thank you
on the other hand, the main character is sick as shit
The World Ends with You: god I love an anime about the power of friendship. I’ve only had these kids for two episodes and I would lay down my life for them
Nirvana in Fire: we’re only three episodes in and I did spend the first half of the first ep being like. oh god which of these people are actually important who am I supposed to care about here. and then by the end of the first ep I knew which ones I cared about and am now very afraid for their safety. do love the political intrigue though
playing: got through the first mission of Brigmore Witches. I love a good undercover mission, I wish I hadn’t been too afraid of like. alarms going off if I freed the other prisoners because I think Comrade Daud should do a jailbreak, and Lizzy Stride can call me anytime
also recently have played various ttrpgs including Firebrands, more Things, Eldritch and Terrifying, Link, and of course more Beam Saber (oh shit I meant to do my recap post for last session OOPS)
making: Zan and I made some real good chicken parm the other night, vaguely based on this recipe. by which I mean, we looked at the recipe to see how many eggs to use and how long to cook it and pretty much nothing else. the egg marinade step seemed unnecessary and I made the sauce the way I always make tomato sauce, which some day I should write down because it does in fact fuck. the secret is a shit-ton of oregano and basil and no chunks of tomato because fuck that. bad texture
Zan made the zucchini which also slapped, using some of the leftover bread crumbs
writing: I’ve posted a couple of things but most recently I wrote some rarepair femslash. this is the first fic for this ship on ao3 and the second ship in the f/f tag for this fandom that’s actually about the women in the show (as opposed to showing up in the f/f tag because it’s marked as “multi” or like. genderbent versions of the main m/m ship) but like. look at them. they’re terrible evil assassin women and they’re in love. anyway I’ve gotten over being embarrassed about having written a sex scene and moved on to wanting people to read my fic. there’s sparring as foreplay it’s a good time

MHA Request Rules
MHA Request Rules
For reference I mostly watch the anime and read the wiki’s. For anime I am in season 4 and I watch dub. (due to eye issues and dyslexia I cannot watch sub no matter how I would like to) I have not read the manga, but I know quite a bit of what happens and spoilers do not bother me at all for this fandom.
SFW and NSW requests allowed. Swearing will occur.
Reader insert preferred. Will be gender neutral unless gender is absolutely relevant.
If I am uncomfortable with a request or do not fully understand it I will let you know. Depending the situation we may be able to compromise or something. If not it is my right to say no.
Headcanons: Can be about most anything, once again if I am uncomfortable or so I will tell you, even for anonymous I will post it with my reason to why I do not wish to answer. You can request up to 4 characters for these, I may not write for all 4 depending my knowledge of the character and length just depends on my inspiration and thoughts.
Scenarios/One-Shots: Same as headcanons except only request up to 2 characters.
I will NOT write for villains
I will write for Pro heroes and students. It is easier if you ask for specific ones then me trying to list everyone. I will look them up if I do not know them and do not be afraid to ask about the ‘less popular’ characters. (I love Gang Orca)
LGBTQ+ very welcome here! I am bisexual and genderfluid myself. I have never really felt dysphoric and I know that I have a lot to learn about the community yet and while I may not understand everyone and their feelings I do my best to be respectful. Please educate me if I mess up and please send requests if you are comfortable.
Any pairing welcome as well, m/m, f/m, f/f etc
Canon relationships: If characters are married in canon (Bakugo Parent, Jiro Parents, Rock Lock for example) I will not break them up, divorce, widow etc. Especially if it is a happy marriage! I will still write headcanons for them or give my opinions if you like.
Trigger Warnings: I will do my very best to list them at the beginning! If I miss something please tell me! I will let you know if I will not write something, but the ones that come to mind now are self-harm, suicide, rape, abuse and incest. Now if it happened in the characters past/scars there is leeway, but I will not write it out in detail.
I want this blog to be a safe space so would prefer to write more positive scenarios, but slight angst can be alright.
NSFW can have a lot to it so I welcome communication. The only big thing I will say is I will NOT write underage characters. If you want any of the current students they will be aged up and out of high school.
AU’s: The only one that I really like and will write for is A/B/O or Omegaverse depending how people call it. Feel free to ask questions, my thoughts on characters, etc! For this, though, I would prefer that any Alpha i write for is male, but Omegas can be male or female. It is just my current comfort level for this AU and it may expand in the future, these can be SFW or NSFW as well!
I think that covers most things, if you have questions please ask. Even anonymous questions are valued and I will try to respond to all I get, even if it is to politely decline/deny
Have a wonderful day!

According to Goodreads, my average rating is 3.8, which doesn’t feel quite right, but who am I to argue with data. As of now, I am 98 books in, but I fully intend to finish a short book and manga before midnight. it’ll be my first recorded year of reaching 100 books a year, but as I explained earlier, I feel like it made me bypass longer books. My longest book was On A Sunbeam, at 533 pages. That’s weak.
Read Bricks: My 2020 Reading Goal
This isn’t exactly a top books of 2019 post, because there are 2nd or 3rd choices of some months that are better than the #1s of other months. But I did notice a trend (3 months) where I would read the best book of the month as the first book of the month, and those were also the best books of the year.
January
Stats: 6 books, 2 contemporary, 1 fantasy, 1 classic, 1 manga, 1 mystery
Rep:
And the best book:
If We Were Villains, ML Rio
I love this book, it was my favourite of 2019 and I still think about it. I found it on a whim, while I was aimlessly browsing the library. It’s about a Shakespeare group in college a cult, where one of their members were murdered and they all have something to hide. There’s a slow-burn m/m romance tragedy that was painfully simar to my own gay awakening. But alas, I don’t own it, so if you guys want to gift it to me…
February
Stats: 7 books, 3 Contemporary, 1 horror, 1 manga, 1 historical fiction, 1 mystery
Rep:
The best book:
Darius The Great is Not Ok, Adib Khorram
This follows an Iranan-american boy whose granddad in Iran is ill, so his family is going to visit them so Darius can know him before he dies. It isn’t about the granddad though: it’s about Iranian culture, soccer, and a boy. Being gay can be a death sentence in Iran, so while there’s definite gay undertones, they never actually do or say anything. Their friendship is the purest thing, some hope while Darius is struggling with depression.
March
Stats: 6 books, 3 manga, 2 horror, 1 contemporary
Rep:
The best book:
Autoboyography Christina Lauren
This book made me upset. It’s about 2 boys, one who’s at peace with his bisexuality, and the other who’s a mormon. It deals with his struggle to love someone and go against his family and community. There’s also a writing seminar, where one has to write a book with the other coaching him. I thought that part could’ve been expanded more. There’s secret hikes and secret gay moments.
April
Stats: 8 books, 5 Contemporary, 1 satire, 1 horror, 1 manga

Radio Silence, Alice Oseman
Kat @ paperback dreams loves this book so much, if you didn’t know. I was expecting some letdown, but I still love it. It’s about a gang that produces a sci-fi podcast called Universe City while they muse about what they’re going to do after high school. It’s an exploration of why college isn’t for everyone.

Everything Leads To You, Nina LaCour
F/F in LA! i loved how ingrained movies were in their lives, how it was their jobs, their relatives’ jobs, their passions. There’s also a realllly slooow burn romance! If Nina wrote a how-to slow burn guide, it’d be the book on how to write relationships.

December
This is a no-brainer. The Deep by Rivers Solomon is about merfolk descended from pregnant captives on slave ships that were thrown overboard. Their babies were born in the water, barely functioning merbabies. 100 years later, the society remembers three days a year, the memories too heavy and their capacity to short for them to be held by anyone other than the Historian. But now she’s sick of it and wants to find herself. Super gay, written by a nonbinary author.

My December TBR plus #currentlyreading The Deep by Rivers Solomon and Tarnished Are The Stars by @rosieethor The Deep is about the decedents of the people captured on slave ships that jumped overboard, a society that can't bear to remember their past and gives all of the memories to one merperson a generation. Tarnished Are The Stars is set in a future where technology is banned, least humanity fall into the trap of destroying the planet- but our main queers use it to help people with medical problems. #amreading #bookstagram #ilovebooks #lgbt

Throughout every year, I don’t just read. As is made obvious by my Film Friday and Music Monday series, I love to talk about pretty much everything I come into contact with- films, TV, video games, music- you name it, I enjoy it!
In this post, I won’t be talking my favourite books of 2018, but I will be talking about pretty much everything else I enjoyed this year, starting wiiiiith….
F I L M S
Bohemian Rhapsody: a very divisive one. I went with my sister to see it and it was such a lovely experience; I know some people hate the way bisexuality was portrayed, but I loved it.
Set It Up: I love Zooey Deutch. Also, if you ever want to see people acting drunk and doing it accurately, watch the pizza flirting scene, cause it’s amaaazing!
Venom: this film was trash and I love it! The cryptid love story we’ve all been waiting for Marvel to commit to since the original Spider Man noughties films.
Thor Ragnarok: ya girl can’t remember if this was a re-watch in 2018, but I’m including it. So beautiful and colourful. Infinity War could never have characterisation quite like this film :]
Baywatch: I realise I’m just exposing my terrible taste in movies, oh dear. I put off watching Baywatch because of all the criticism, but I actually loved watching this with my dad. It’s funny as heck, has looooads of eye candy to satisfy my bisexual heart, and I actually love all the romances! [also Logan Paul gets dragged in this film]
Howl’s Moving Castle: My first Studio Ghibli [don’t yell at me] and I loved it! More than the book, actually, which was a surprise. I love Sophie, and Howl lives for the drama, which I can respect.
Kubo and the Two Strings: This is amazing. So soft and wholesome, amazing stop motion animation, an incredible look into feudal Japan and Japanese culture, and just left me feeling so warm inside!
Clue: I am so ashamed that I only watched this film for the first time in 2018. It’s so funny, to the point where I literally cried watching it, and I’m glad I watched it with my sister, who makes everything we watch together even better with her commentary.
The Duff: I am so glad this adaptation was good, even if it did get rid of all the sex positivity talk from the book. It’s super cheesy, but the romance is developed well, and I loved Mae Whitman as Bianca!
The Shining: My sister forced me to watch this after years of being a chicken who only saw the clips from Twister [the best disaster movie, holla] and was bored by the book [don’t come after me, my opinions on things are pretty all over the place and I stand by my dislike]. I have a great picture of my sister drinking a glass of milk and melting down all her easter eggs to dip strawberries into as we watched the film.
T V A N D A N I M E
My Hero Academia: I watched the dub and I love it. Clifford Chapin as Bakugou? Amazing. Clifford Chapin giving a whole rundown of Bakugou’s character that made me love my angry misunderstood boy even more? SHOWSTOPPING, SPECTACULAR, OWE HIM MY LIFE.
Runaways: Seeing Gregg Sulkin and Ariela Barer portray my favourite couple in comic book history destroyed me. Ariela Barer killed it with every single outfit, and she’s only a year older than me, so I’m hoping we’ll bump into each other one day and we will fall in love. A girl can dream, okay?
Over the Garden Wall: My third re-watch of this animated show! I go hard for the Southern Gothic!
The Alienist: This show is so so dark, and I still haven’t quite finished season 1, but it’s incredible as both a period piece and a crime drama. Also has disability rep, Jewish characters, a man questioning his sexuality, and a woman in a main role who kills it, which is pretty new to me for a period show!
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Uh, no offence, but this is the superior FMA anime. I’m still not quite finished, as I’m still reading the last few volumes of the manga, but boy I love the dub. I tend to watch this while I do other things on my phone or blogging, so I always lean towards the dub.
The Haunting of Hill House: Would I die for the Crain siblings and also the fact that the fifth episode at the funeral was filmed in 5 shots? YES. Did I actually die during that scene in the car in episode 8? 100%. I cried from fear at that scene. I had to go to sleep because it scared me so much. A beautiful ghost story, one that has cheap Hollywood jump scares quaking.
Criminal Minds: I included that specific poster because it has my three favourites on it. I’ve managed to watch over 4 seasons of Criminal Minds since December 1st, while I was completing uni reading and research for essay, and I honestly must congratulate myself for my dedication. It’s cheesy and not entirely accurate, but I love it anyway, and would willingly give my life for Dr Spencer Reid without thinking twice.
M U S I C
Reputation by Taylor Swift: A 2017 release I only truly appreciated this year. I had a rough time with a lot of stuff, and listening to Taylor Swift validate being angry kind of made me feel better? In a way that I don’t want people to look too deep into, thank you very much, I still uphold my Hufflepuff standing, but I am allowed to be angry and frustrated with the way people use me [thank you to all the Slytherins in my life for teaching me that!] [favourite song is End Game]
A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships by the 1975: Anxiety! Online culture! Matty singing more about addiction! I love this album, and cannot wait to see them at the O2 in January. I’ve been listening to them since midway through November nonstop. [favourite song is Sincerity is Scary, but my favourite 1975 songs are probably [So Far] It’s Alright and Medicine]
MANIA by Fall Out Boy: Fall Out Boy are really still killing it! This album has religious undertones throughout, which I loved, and it’s so loud and angry! Hell yes! [favourite songs are Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea and Heaven’s Gate]
The Now Now by Gorillaz: Really, all of Gorillaz albums got me through this year. I spent at least a month only listening to them and watching all their music videos in chronological order. [favourite song is Fireflies, but my favourite Gorillaz songs are Melancholy Hill and Every Planet We Reach Is Dead!]
V I D E O G A M E S
So…. the only video game I got into, again, was Night In the Woods? Woopsie?
Night in the Woods is about an anthropomorphic cat called Mae, who moves back to her home town of Possum Springs after dropping out of college. While it focuses mainly on Mae’s friendships with Bea [a snarky smoking alligator]; Gregg [a fox, and her childhood best friend]; and Angus [a bear, and Gregg’s boyfriend], there’s also major themes covered that I love in these small-town set stories, as well as stories in general: mental illness, family struggles and found families, and ‘the slow death of small town America’. It’s SOOOO GOOD, and I highly recommend it, especially for the story.
There was another bit of video game news I thought I’d talk about, as well as put down here certain games I have yet to watch people play, but am planning on doing.
THE LAST OF US 2 YAAAAAAY! I am such a big The Last of Us fan, so much so that I literally cried when I first saw the trailer/footage from the second game. The return of everyone’s favourite lesbian, Miss Ellie Williams, and everyone’s favourite gruff dad, Mr Joel Miller, so I’m buzzing. So so excited.
Now, two video games I swear I’m going to get to:
South Park: The Fractured but Whole: The Mysterion episodes of South Park have always been my favourite, so having a whole video game centred around them as superheroes? A DREAM. I also can’t wait to see Craig and Tweek, and Butters [who is my favourite South Park character besides Kenny!]
Finding Paradise: this is the sequel to To The Moon, one of my favourite video games of all time, so I am highly anticipating getting to this finally! I just need to know what’s in that pill bottle, okay?
And that is all of my favourites! What films, TV shows, music and/or video games did you enjoy in 2018? Anything you’re excited for in 2019?
Thank you for reading, and happy new year!
Favourites of 2018: Films, TV Shows and More! Throughout every year, I don't just read. As is made obvious by my Film Friday and Music Monday series, I love to talk about pretty much everything I come into contact with- films, TV, video games, music- you name it, I enjoy it!
