After losing to Yugi in the ceremonial duel, Atem found himself in the monotony of exactly the things he detested most: Being Pharaoh. One day, Atem is bothered by the sounds of someone pleading for their lives followed by a blood curdling scream. It is then he decides then he needs to return to the living world in order to aid whoever it is. He is fairly certain this is something that is going to happen in the future and not something that has already happened. He decides that he will do whatever it takes to aid the person who has called out to him, no matter the cost.  But what a cost it is... While is he granted the chance to return, it is not without difficulty, and it will come with a price. Anubis warns him of this before he starts The Trials: Three brutalizing tests to measure if Atem is strong enough to return to the Land of the Living. He passes, only just barely escaping with his soul, and is allowed to return. But the way is not for the faint of heart. Washed up on the docks shivering and alone, Atem finally finds himself in domino again. As part of the deal with Anubis, the God of the underworld tell Atem he will set him up with everything he needs, including identification. Anubis cryptically tell Atem it’s the least he could do for what Atem has done for him.  Atem now lives in a ostentatious flat and is trying his best to live his new life, but…he hasn’t tried to find anyone. He’s too afraid.

He has no idea who he heard cry out in the night, but he knows he needs to find out and help them…before it’s too late. The price of leaving the Afterlife was nothing he expected. Anubis gave an ominous warning about unending darkness, but Atem was not prepared for what that meant. Now, living with Malice, a spirit he is all too familiar with, Atem is avoiding people at all costs. He wants to keep his friends safe, and if that means hiding from them, so be it.

In chapter 82 we see snippets of tsukasa and amane alive... as I'm sure you know! The issue is we can't know how canon it is, but I like to believe they're real as they seem a bit too grandiose for a kid like Tsukasa to imagine. (Plus, the reveal of Tsukasa's face in the school entrance ceremony...) He seems kind of Tsukasa-ish all things considered. maybe a bit more placid and normal? Less crazy-looking?

every time one of these flashback minicomics happens or a more context-filled color spread I’m like *on my knees* PLEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE WHEN YUGI!!!!!!! PLEASE LET ME SEE THEM TALK *shaking bars of my cage* PLEAAAASE SHOW ME THEM PLAYING LITTLE GAMES, WHAT IS THE DYNAMIC LIIIKE AT AGE 8??? They be catching bugs and playing katanuki but pleeaaase, is Amane like, a doting big brother??? Is Tsukasa like, more attentive or placid?? Or more wiley??? Would Amane pick on him with little games and stuff??? Did Tsukasa pull back on his rowdiness at all, is he still super clumsy, AAORUGORGH it feels like we cannot see anything more substantial yet.... the random few silent shots are edging me. Did Amane compare his stupid kokeshi doll to a penis back then????? At what age does his sexual irreverence start?? Does he subject Tsukasa to his boob talk?? I have 100 questions. AND WHAT WOULD TSUKASA SAY OR DO??? I can’t begin to think about ‘Tsukasa with others’, I CAN’T EVEN QUITE TALK ABOUT LIVING TSUKASA WITH AMANE....!! *visibly dying on the ground* did they draw zoo animals together. What would Amane say about Tsukasa’s drawings. Did they give eachother Valentines. What kind of Christmas presents would they get each other. What are birthdays like at 8-13. Does anyone COME to them or is this insular? 

Besides that, we also have Tsukasa at age 8, who is allowed to go out with amane and roam the festival. All we know about him here is that he hyper focused on a stall game for hours and starts to あばれる if anyone stops him. This is still not a lot, but it does paint a picture of a volatile and independent child... still, it's interesting how AidaIro still refuses to show his face most of the time.

Oouuuuhh I can’t use the word volatile, despite, the phrase, being so like wildin’, look at how incredibly affectionate Amane is as he talks about it, hims little blush, it makes me envision Tsukasa flailing his little arms around and whining and Amane not having the heart to drag him away. 

this panel is my lifeblood......... Amane referring to Tsukasa doing something sooo inconvenient but so warmly ..... he’s like... *sigh* that dog of mine ..... maybe he just knows this will happen every Tanabata. Resigned. Its even Amane’s favorite game too, argh..... I wonder how long he ‘lasts’ having fun with Tsukasa ... *losing the plot*

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 2021 Recap+my moots. 🌈✨

So, idk if any of yall remember when my account had a very soft purple theme to it. I made this blog when I was 17, following a pretty bad breakup in February because I found that writing helped me a lot. My blog changed as soon as I turned 18 because the soft theme wasnt really the right vibe and I wanted to try my hand at writing more smut (obviously I like writing angst and more fluffy stuff now and shitposr constantly). I started my blog back in March (dont remember the date) and since then, I never thought I would have as many moots and close friends like I do now. My lovely moots generally hear from me more and I’m so glad that I have them. I’m so thankful to have all you lovely amazing beautiful, and talented people in my life. 🍓 I Ship You With Yugi Muto! 🍓

Let’s get started! I feel like you guys met through school! It wasn’t love at first sight but, Yugi definitely had a small crush on you. But he didn’t know how to tell you, let alone barely knew you aside from being acquaintances! You guys didn’t really share the same friends either, which didn’t help the situation. But everyday he would try talking to you and getting to know you! Starting with just simple passing phrases and eventually small talk, he was determined to get to know you better! After interacting more and becoming better acquaintances, he asked you to join group of pals, and they welcomed you with open arms! It didn’t take long for them to warm up to you and treated you like you had been part of the group since the beginning! ✨

After becoming closer friends and getting to know you better, he fell in love with you that much more. He could immediately relate to your shy + awkwardness. When you two were first getting to know each other, your conversations probably went something like this -

“Um, hi.”

“Hi.”

“How are you today?”

“I’m good, how are you?”

“I’m good as well.”

“...”

“...”

“Did you finish the homework for today?”

“I did, did you?”

“I did, somehow.”

“Haha, that’s good.”

“Yeah.”

It was...a work in progress from you two both being a bit shy and awkward but, you both understood and managed! For him, it was good to know someone could understand how hard it was to communicate on the spot like that! I feel like you two hanging out would be a comfortable silence of you both just doing your own things. He completely respects and understands your need for alone time! If you’re ever in a public area and you just need some time, he will do everything in his power to make sure you are able to get what you need! He has a deep respect, as he also just needs that time to himself and will let you have as much as needed!

After getting to know you more, he decided it was finally time to confess to you, and got advice from his pals. He already had a clear idea of how he wanted to confess but, some outside input was never a bad idea! This all was a bit puzzling to him (yes i am a master at humor), but he felt confident as long as he stayed true to himself! So, here’s how he confessed:

He invited you to the local park that weekend - He had known you liked photography and told you that it had some gorgeous sceneries that maybe you’d be interested in, so he wanted to take you there! Though aside from photos, there was also many other things to do! You guys played DM, worked on your decks together, walked through the park, got some snacks at the local vendor, and some other little relaxing activities. The day was coming to an end though, but Yugi didn’t want to leave quite yet.

“Wait, before we go, there’s something I want to show you, if that’s alright!”

In a little secluded area in the park, if you go there at juuuusstt the right time of the day, you can perfectly see the sunset over the horizon.

“Um, I know you mentioned you liked taking photos of sunsets, so I thought you might like this..!”

After this, he’d tell you he wanted to let you know something and confess his feelings to you honestly and wholeheartedly. He also brought a bouquet for you! Where he had the bouquet this whole time? Who knows. But he had it then, ready to give it you! He was extremely nervous about your response (though he’d never let it show), and would understand and respect your decision to say no, but after hearing you say yes, he was so happy he could cry! He didn’t, but, asked if he could give you a hug. 🥺🥺 Later that night when he got home, he got a ‘Good job Aibou!’ and a thumbs up of approval from Yami Yugi. And maybe even a bit of teasing from him (LOL).

Now, onto your relationship! Dates with Yugi are always so sweet. 🥺 Small cafés, window shopping around the local mall, hanging out at the park, quiet evening strolls, hanging out at the game store, he loves little quiet dates where you can spend quality time together! Even if it’s just you two at home watching your favorite shows together - he loves it. Of course though, he’s down to do whatever you want to do for dates! He’ll always ask you what you want to do first before he gives an idea. He’d also totally take you on little dates to go photograph the things you like!

He’s so happy when you trust him enough to be playful and act silly around him! Just knowing you’ve warmed up to each other enough for you to be comfortable with him makes him so joyous! You two making small jokes and giggling together whenever you remember them 🥺💗

Also - wearing your sweatshirts. One day you let him borrow one because it was cold out that day but - he loved it so much! He always gets so excited to borrow your sweatshirts, they remind him of you and it feels like he’s carrying a little piece of you with him wherever he goes. If you ever decided to give him one he’d cherish it so much!!

Whenever you’re hard on yourself, Yugi’s always there to make sure you don’t go too hard on yourself. He’s always ready to be there to help you and make sure you take care of yourself! He has a problem of being a bit too hard on himself as well, so he wants to make sure you’re taking it easy and will be there to encourage you and has your back! Since he does the same thing though, you two will have to look out for and encourage each other that they got this! 💪🏻

Whenever you draw something for Yugi, he makes sure to handle it with the utmost care. He’ll go home and frame it to make sure it doesn’t get harmed and just keeps them all - whenever you draw for him he’s over the moon! He could also just listen to your singing all day. I feel like Yugi can definitely sing (his japanese VA used to be a singer in a band, little fun fact!) but he’d rather not, he’d much rather listen to you! And if you wanted to coach him, he’d be more than happy! You two doing a little duet together 🥺🥺

Yugioh S3 Ep 43: Tea Can Just Knock Over Joey Wheeler With Her Index Finger

Guys guys guys, my favorite Character is back. That’s right--the storyboarder!

So this episode looked helllla nice for a Yugioh episode (again, this is Yugioh, it will win no awards.) It wasn’t as nice and fluid as the episode where they temporarily killed off Joey Wheeler, but I give it a good 2nd place.

You can tell we’re getting to the climax of the season because they’re throwing down their most entertaining art people onto the screen, giving us about 5 zillion dutch angle fashion close-ups of Marik’s cabbage face, and a whole lot of zany and hard to very hard to draw fish-eye lens angles of Pharaoh.

Also, everyone wears flared bell-bottom pants now. New stylistic decision, as decided just now. Everyone in pants now has flares. Even if their pants are cargo pants. How very 00′s. (my pants were flares from like birth until 2006, it was a good trend, super comfy, bring it back.)

First off, Evil Marik decided to rewrite Marik history a little bit with some hilarious retconning that only the most evil Marik would think is legit.

I mean I was there when Marik was introduced and was a complete asshole all of S2. I remember when Odion considered murdering the hell out of his little brother because this Marik guy was such freakin tool and his Dad was an evil cultist bastard. I...I’m gonna go on a limb and assume that calling Marik a “loyal servant” is a freakin stretch. Marik made his choices. Yes, his bad side killed his Dad, but they have made sure to indicate that yes, this is the evil inside of Marik, something that he himself caused--but most of the things that Marik has done (with the exception of killing his own Dad) is still Marik. He did that.

The fact that his evil side can’t quite connect that his good side and evil side are at all the same however, is fitting for an evil Marik to think. More and more, Marik and Marik are becoming 2 different people, and this game is the deciding factor to finally give this guy full autonomy of his other half.

We’ve seen this type of contrast before with Bakura and Ryou--where Ryou and Bakura don’t really get along but have always been clearly different people, so the culpability of what they do tends to fall on Bakura. (which is a pretty GRAND assumption, I still think Ryou is a precious but absolutely still shady little bastard) So, it’s a little different that Marik considers himself two completely different people when it’s just...not the same. Marik’s alter ego is just an ego. More like how Yami was in Season Zero but a little bit more evil. Both Marik’s have the same upbringing and the same source.

It’s been kind of an interesting progression now I can look back on it, where slowly the two have been clashing to the point that they are in fact different, disparate people now. The fact that Marik points out how his situation similar to Yugi and Pharaoh being a host is almost like “well yeah, it would have been nice to see how the whole Season Zero Yami evolved into more of a separate person over time, I’m glad you inferred that, and I’ll never get to see it, thanks” But again, all that is inferred. Whether Yami Yugi eventually became Pharaoh over time or whether Pharaoh is a big retcon of Yami Yugi for the new series in order to keep the culpability for what he does off of Yugi Muto was never directly spoken in the show so it’ll be left to your fanfictions.

Meanwhile, Yugi has decided that they’re going to try and purify the Marik situation and save the good side. This is sort of the Yugioh thing, to dispel the bad forces from people and leave behind hollow husks, so yeah...it tracks. I mean...there’s very little Marik left to save, but it’s better than a husk, amiright? Better than what happened to freakin PaniK, RIP. I’m sure erasing over half of your identity will go over real well for Marik and be absolutely painless.

And then we had a lovely scene that, for those people doing scene redraws from anime, as has been a popular trend on art blogs lately--this is your episode for Yugioh. This episode’s got moody lighting, we’ve subdued all our weird ass colors into one concrete palate (remember how green the carpet used to be?) we got interesting elements of Marik being here despite being chopped into pieces. We got so many ellipses drawn in perspective (y’all I could write an entire posts just about ellipses but I’ll spare you). It’s like Yugioh gave itself a redraw.

I can’t believe this shot came out of freakin Yugioh.

Also, this guy was an ASSHOLE for the past 2 seasons but the show was like “time to make him likeable” and so they dropped some good ass cinematography and sung that sad backstory tune on the trumpet and you know what? It works.

+++++++++++++++RANT ABOUT REDEMPTION ARCS FEEL FREE TO SKIP THIS MASSIVE WALL OF TEXT++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now I think the arc of Marik is pretty simple and people are pretty chill with it. But, I’m gonna talk about villain redemption arcs just in general--gonna sidetrack a little from Yugioh for a moment. Partly because I watched 6 seasons of Once Upon a Time, which is basically Villain Redemption Arc Controversy: The Show.

It bothers a hell ton of people when TV shows have to make a villain redeemable, but there’s only one episode left so they put their hands up and say “but I swear the good side of him was always good” But, does that mean Marik’s going to make up for all the murder and sending people to the shadow realm? No. He never will. Even if Marik was completely his bad half the whole time, it still wouldn’t make up for the damage done. Dead people are...DEAD.

Marik can’t actually make any choices right now to redeem his character. All he’s doing is accepting he will never be a full person ever again. Hence why he is in slices and pieces, and in several shots is trapped either in an empty glass or a window. The choice to redeem him is entirely on other people.

And that’s the thing about redemption arcs that I want to bring up--how much of a character’s redemption relies on what the villains do to “Make up for what they did”, and how much relies on everyone else to redeem them. I think the tendency is for people to assume that the villains should be doing 90-100% of the redeeming, but unless they have a time machine--they can’t do any. Even if they freakin die to sacrifice themselves it’s still like “that character was basically little Stalin, right?

I’ve seen like a million ways to write a redemption arc, but none of them, not a single one that I can think of, can ever truly make up for the things the villian has done. There’s no way that Darth Vadar was suddenly going to become a good Dad, no matter how many Palpatines he can toss into a...whatever that was at the end of that movie. That’s the riddle behind what makes redemption arcs so engaging--By all cultural standards these villains should always be tagged a “bad guy” but, we, the audience, are being challenged to ignore those standards.

And I know a lot of people see redemption arcs as a quasi-religious sort of adventure into atonement, where we’re supposed to see ourselves as the villain searching for some type of forgiveness from a higher, most-likely-a-reference-to-Jesus-power, but I don’t really see them that way. Maybe it’s because, I dunno, I haven’t killed anyone recently or possessed other people’s minds or strung them up to anchors and dropped them into the ocean. But if you see yourself as a Marik, then go for it, I won’t stop you.

But, to me, a redemption arc is more of a question posed for us as viewers. Since it is impossible for the writers to ever fully redeem a character, the only ones doing the redeeming are the people watching it, who’s reaction will differ wildly from person to person, and that’s what makes it fascinating.

And like, that’s my thesis here at the very last paragraph of this long meandering rant. Redemption arcs aren’t about “hey is this person good enough to be redeemed (because that will never happen)” it’s “are you too good to redeem that person?” It’s a large scale experiment on the viewers watching and that’s why it makes people so freakin pissed and uncomfortable. Every redemption arc calls them out directly, and for some people it’s just like--the world ends or something. I have seen actual internet mobs develop over...a villain redemption arc. Which is weird.

And so I’ll leave it with my other spicy take that...you don’t have to redeem every villain when the question is asked. I mean these aren’t real people. The questions of “would you redeem this person” is asked entirely hypothetically. And that’s what makes up stories, not just the interaction of the people inside the stories, but when it affects the moral structure of the readers directly, and seeing how for some people, that can be a very intense and deep reflection. (which usually leads to a hell ton of either retconning fanfiction or a hell ton of really, really angry posts)

bro’s just told me that Yugioh is just a redemption arc for season 0 Yami Yugi. Bro and his spicy headcanons. This one holds some water though, lol.

So it was only a matter of time before the people who actually care about being possessed noticed this situation, it just took like...a season longer than I thought it would. I’ll be honest it was quite cathartic for them to actually address for the first time in what feels like a long time “SHOOT, GHOSTS!?!?”

Although it was kind of funny that the biggest reaction to all of this came straight from Joey. Yugi still doesn’t care, Tristan’s decided to just accept this, and Duke is just slowly backing away. But Joey’s going to try and do the work that Yugi should have done last episode.

So, lets go over the Yugioh power chart here. Tristan can punch out Bakura. Tristan can also defeat Seto Kaiba with a broomstick. Joey can kick Tristan, even when Tristan is armed with a broomstick, so hard that Tristan flew through a metal door and bent it completely over backwards. Tea, however, can knock Joey completely over with one single index finger.

How has this girl ever been abducted? Was she just bored?

Superhero AU tidbits

Just some simple notes about what is going down for the subjects when the Project was in effect. You can find the story on my AO3 under “the Failings of Project Millennium” or under the Superhero AU tag here!

MODIFICATIONS

HORUS- Enhanced (right) eye used for information and communication, as well as monitoring the vitals of himself and every other subject. Can travel to and from the Void at will. Abilities can be used for offensive and defensive combat. The source thus maintains all abilities shown in the other subjects. (Tracking chip placed in the base of the skull prior to stasis)

ANUBIS- Gained super strength and agility from Subject Horus’ ability transfer. Eyes enhanced as tools used for judgment When properly maintained, can access every criminal data base to decide proper execution of abilities. the Anubis mask acts as a backup drive for this ability. (Shock collar later implemented to pull him from Subject Anubis to his more docile identity; Yugi Mutou.)

RA- Abilities given can be used to see and communicate with beings in the Void. Can track all subjects at will. Enhanced (left) eye used for information and communication. Can monitor the vitals of Kuk and himself. (Mask can be used with addition of the Eye as a means to track and find other Subjects at a wide distance.)

KUK-Abilities allow him to walk in and out of the Void at will, as well as use it to lock others in. Enhancements in the eyes allow for increased sight, especially in a dark place such as the Void. Can not sense anyone outside of Ra with the Horus Abilities. Relies on Ra for that information.

SET- Abilities given as a means to track all remaining project subjects and terminate them. Highly gifted in offensive abilities with little to no ability in defensive and teleportation to and from the Void. No technological modifications implemented. (May have been used and modified by the subject if such enhancements were implemented. To put it bluntly; Subject Set is enough of a pain in the ass as he is.)

BAST- High defensive capabilities. Needs proper training in her offensive techniques. Can travel in and out of the Void almost as well at Kuk or Horus. Has a tendency to attach herself to other subjects and vow to protect them. (Deceased via Kaiba Corp)

OSIRIS- Abilities Unknown. Tends to stay silent and unmoving during testing. Everything simply tends to go into his favor. Never looks surprised at  event changes. Seems to have more influence on Horus than Horus has on him. (Deceased via Kaiba Corp)

THOTH- Began with very few abilities other than use of the Void. Has the ability to learn techniques and abilities from other subjects at will but cannot hold it for much longer after an interaction. To be kept away from Anubis until we can judge his stability of mind. (Deceased via Subject Anubis)

HATHOR- High offensive capabilities but no motivation to use them. Can travel through the Void but is the slowest at this ability. Able to hold a high influence on people that are not the subjects in question. (Deceased via Subject Anubis)

Data transfer- Horus and Ra can share data with one another via enhancements in their eyes and wrists. This can include emotions and memories depending on if they wish to share.

RANDOM TIDBITS

- G. Kaiba tried to get the height and weight estimates for the adult version of all the subjects. Horus was the only one he had the information for to give a proper one

— Because of the height of his family members, Horus was expected to be about 5’ 7”. Because he was malnourished, he only made it up to a height of about 5’ 0”

-Out of all the subjects alive, Horus is the smallest and Set is the tallest(around 6’2”).

-Aside from Horus, Hathor was the youngest subject to the project. She was adopted at two months while most other subjects were nearly a year.

-Anubis was the only subject found by Sugoroku Mutou. Everyone else went through vigorous testing to ensure their survival.

-Osiris was the first to receive the Horus abilities. It nearly killed him.

-Kuk was adopted alone. He was violent to everyone up until the day Ra was introduced to the project. From then on, his violence was dependent on Ra’s state

After his defeat, he and Sera were transported back to Egypt - likely in an attempt to have them start over. But Diva has never really been able to let things go.

So they picked up what little they had and found themselves heading back to Japan - to Domino, where their lives had almost been erased. He’d said that he wanted to make a new life for them there, but really…

He just wants the Plana back.

Hey guys it’s been too long since my last incoherent ramble about Yugi so strap in.

I just want to start off saying that I absolutely love all the people I got to meet and talk to while having this blog up. Even if we really don’t talk much anymore or not as much, but I wouldn’t have gotten this far without my muse highkey. 

When I started this blog, it was for season 0 Yugi. It was the most recent series I’ve watched of Yugioh at the time and I just could really appreciate the gaming fanatic nerd that was Yugi. But it was pretty slow decline from the intent I wanted verses what my blog is and what my muse turned into. Not only was S0 the last series I watched, I also assumed since Yugi was the main protagonist that everyone and their mother would rp him. I ended up making it harder for myself with having my basic world be the very beginning when everyone else was either last season [later DSOD] and post series.

I ended up taking the initiative and bending my muse to fit whatever spot other people needed or wanted so that I could get a jump-start. I don’t necessarily regret doing that, but I never really put my foot down on the interactions which put me in awkward situations of some people asking “oh so you’re only season 0? what about post?” or “I’ve only seen you doing things with post characters”. Again these aren’t really bad things, but it made me confused as to what my Yugi was.

At multiple points, I’d ask my friends and rp partners about doing something new and different like “What if Yugi never solved the puzzle? What if Yugi could use the  Prana’s power since Diva did try and persuade him to join him? What if being possessed by a spirit that a piece of Zorc inside actually did some damage to Yugi?”. These are things I wish I would’ve put more effort into promoting and talking about.

Another thing that was brought to my attention more recently was the sudden spike of active Yugi’s again. I don’t view other Yugis as “competition” but I do feel a sort of solidarity since Yugi as a muse means so damn much to me. Its probably extremely misguided since not everyone got viciously bullied during their earlier years, but I was and just feel good when I see others pop up. Its another reason why I chose season 0. Yugi got beat up a lot for literally standing there, or having fun, or genuinely did something a clumsy teenage boy would do.

Just, I clear up a lot of my own feelings with dealing whatever my Yugi’s going through. Of course its not the exact same, somethings Yugi’s experienced in the past isn’t in my history, and vise versa, but in my eyes it makes him special. Special enough for me to feel rightfully feel upset when he’s mistreated in a way that down plays anything he’s going through to give another muse their time to shine. It’s happened so many times on this blog and maybe in the past I didn’t care or thought little of it, but man I have a problem with even knowing what the hell I’m feeling in any given time so it hit me hard as hell earlier this year.

I’m saying all of this to basically say that how I run my blog and how Yugi reacts will be different. If I do go with any of the above ideas, then Yugi will also be classified as Canon-Divergent.

Hell I might just smash up Season 0 and Post Yugi and see where that goes.

Wait, was someone actually threatening people over ships? because: 1) I've been concerned PUZZLE will become a target bc they "look alike" plus Atem is technically 5000+ yrs old (even if he doesn't act it/etc); 2) Multishipping is a thing, people, I ship Yugi&Atem with not just each other but multiple others (Polyshipping is a thing, too!) and 3) am I the only one who sees their relationship as kinda being "canon" like...? They could be bi/pan/poly?? (+ I highly doubt Takahashi is homophobic?)

 I apologize for taking this long to reply, generally, I tend to stay away from discourse for this very reason. I don’t like bringing drama to any of my blogs but lately, its become such a trend that avoiding it seems almost impossible at times. To answer your question, yes there has been some “problematic” shippers in the puzzleshipping fandom. It’s not nothing sort of new, I been around YGO fandom far TOO long to know this, but it’s become like I said, such a trend that is grossing me out lately enough to speak out.

I will cut the rest because I realize this got too long!

To answer your very first question, I have seen people insult and even yell at others for specific ships, not to a level of other fandoms where Puzzleshippers are telling others to KILL themselves for it but I am afraid it is going to get to that level sooner or later? (I had literally come reblog my previous post saying how I should REMOVE myself from Puzzleshipping tags, in which case they forget to check my blog IS about puzzleshipping? So you have absolutely no right to tell me to go when I ship it but I am expressing my CONCERN for this fandom, mainly this ship because I have seen enough discourse thanks to another fandom I DON’T want this to end this way because one. IT WAS NEVER this way when I was in YGO fandom and two it’s NOT right.) Just because our ship has more canon screentime (well duh given and all) doesn’t automatically make you entitled to be an asshole to someone else who MIGHT not. 

In case people forget this show is about FRIENDSHIP, not shipping per say, there might be some romance hints like Yugi crushing on Anzu, and Honda crushing on Miho (in season zero) etc. but that’s just it, that’s the extent of it? There is no shipping at the end game, so everyone is free to ship freely.

Like so many others, (YOU AND I), We are drawn to the softer ships, Yugi and Atem to be more specific. It is something about them that makes us HAPPY, but there is a fine line between what is canon and what is fandom. People seem to cross that line every day. As for the rest of your question, Atem and Yugi might look alike but that was purely because Takahashi wanted it that way. Because he wanted to toy with the idea of a darker theme for original YGO.

Originally it was not going to be about duel monsters, it was going to be Atem playing dark games using Yugi body as a host for it. Likely sort of a demon possessing Yugi? At least that was the original design until his staff made him change it claiming duel monster cards would gain more money. You know what speaks faster than anything else? Selling.

It’s always about toy selling.

To take note as well, Atem may very well be soul wise 3000 years old (I am going by Japanese, not English dub) but he was at the very least sixteen-year-old boy when he died. Giving him literally no room to do anything in his short period of time he was ruling before his father was killed off. That means the entire time he was trapped IN the puzzle, guess what? No social interactions? no skills to improve, he was literally going MAD inside the puzzle, hence why season Zero exists. 

Yugi was literally Atem rock, he stables him to be human again. All Atem has known all his life is darkness after he was sealed off, so it means his mind still the mind of the time he died, a sixteen-year-old boy. He took the only option he had, death, by sealing his soul and Zorc inside the items.

Yugi is another who guess what? Was fifteen when YGO started and became sixteen as the series progress. So he and Atem are literally probably only months apart from each other (Yugi being born in June… ?) But I never believe age as a power imbalance because my parents are years apart and they were happily married until my father pass away. They had happy, 24 years of marriage before then. 

So really, toxic things can exist within the same age gap, as well as separate, it is the matter of how personality is. People seem to forget this? -shrug- 

No, you are not alone in this feeling,  I, too, feel they are very close to being a couple if you can factor the fact Atem is… well… dead? If the god’s somehow found or granted mercy enough to give him a body, at the end, Atem would be given a teenage body because it is the way he dies. But like I said.

There is a FINE line between what is canon and fandom.

I don’t know what it is about this generation specifically that feels so self-entitled to things but like yourself, I am also a multishipper.

OKAY U GUYS LMAO TY FOR THE ASKS <33333 I’ll do ygo for all the letters here! It’s long so I’ll put it under a read more! So dive on in for some talk about my writing and puzzleshipping fics! (Also some snippets I posted below so wink wink)

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

Not like directly, but I definitely put some of my influences into them. Like Yugi wanting to be a knight in The Beast Within was 100% because I used to want to be a knight lmao. 

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Ohhh off the top of my head? Gosh mmmm. Okay so off the top of my head there’s this one scene in an AU I’m probably going to abandon actually, so it’s kinda ehhh to show it now and tease u all like this lmao, but I did really enjoy writing the interactions between Yugi and Atem in them, so I’m going to put one of those for this! I just like the way they butted heads and Atem refused to relent, but then so did Yugi so they just tip toed around each other looking for the weak spot while referring to ‘the pharaoh’ as if it’s someone else and not Atem lmao. For context, it’s from an AU where everyone is an anthro animal, felines are considered the high ranking ones, spotted cats (Yugi’s species) is endangered and highly revered, Atem is a lion.

“You’re under the protection of the pharaoh, and as such are to remain in the palace where said effect can be carried out.” Atem answered as dully as he could manage. It seemed to work, as Yugi’s expression dropped.

“That order can be extended and revoked by the pharaoh himself should he wish. Do you think the pharaoh realises that? I wonder…” Yugi clicked his tongue, a thoughtful hand tapping his chin.

“I believe the pharaoh wishes for the spotted cat to remain within the palace walls, where he would be safest. I wonder if he realises that he could have servants fetch anything he needed from the city.”

“He wants to go look at what the city has to offer. With his own eyes, not those of servants not belonging to him.”

“You have your own staff I have assigned to you.”

“They’re not loyal to me.”

Atem paused, finally giving his full attention to Yugi. So that’s the kind of game Yugi was playing today. It seemed he had slipped up, however, and Atem wasn’t beneath taking advantage of this blunder.

“You question the good intentions of the pharaoh, who has given you his place as residence while asking nothing of you?” Atem tsked, turning back to his scroll, attention slipping from Yugi. He knew that would irritate the little cat, and sure enough, Yugi gave a soft growl in warning.

“I do not question the pharaoh, only wonder if he remembers whether or not he will honour his agreement.”

“What agreement?” Atem rolled his eyes.

Yugi pushed off the desk, slamming a hand down on the table, tail lashing angrily behind him. “You cannot keep me locked up here, pharaoh. Protective rules or not, if I leave, you cannot stop me.”

“No, I can’t,” Atem responded calmly, adjusting the scroll in his paws. “But you lose my protection if you venture into the city. You go alone.”

"I will be going into the city, pharaoh. And you will provide me with the necessary guards."

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

I tend to write random scenes around as I get inspiration for them, but mostly I write it chapter by chapter to keep it consistent! But if I’m in a slump, I write scenes that I had the motivation to work on, even if it’s for like three chapters ahead. I did this a little with my Big Bang fic because I had a deadline and needed to be working on it lmao. Fun fact tho, The Living Daylights I started off with the opening scene from chapter nine! Yeah nine chapters in right crazy ahaha, but that was what inspired the AU! xD

H: How would you describe your style?

I dunno? Semi-decent descriptions enough to understand locations and a fuckton of travelling montage work and fighting scenes. I couldn’t tell u dude I dunno my own style lmao.

Magic AU, which u can find some snippets of here! I don’t plan to take this further than a longshot, even with the potential for more there, I just don’t have the time for another fantasy AU world to build rn lmao. But I hope to have something of this to share soon!

Lion Atem, which I gave the snippet of above, where they’re all anthros. I never wrote much for this, and although I liked the concept, I don’t think I’ll work on it anymore. Maybe I’ll post the 6K I wrote just as a ‘read if u want but don’t expect more pls’ kind of thing. But yeah, at this stage this one is p much discontinued because I don’t have the time to work on it. 

And that leaves Elf King Yugi, something that has definitely been on the back burner for MONTHS now (ever since Trial and Error, so u do the maths lmao) which I have written a fair amount for, but need to do some serious plot work before I consider doing more. Since there is a chance I’ll continue to work on this one tho, I’ll post a snippet here!

"You know the council isn't going to like this Yugi. You're in for a long and dangerous fight with this one."

"I know Anzu- you don't need to treat me like a kid." Yugi scolded her with a quick frown.

"I'm just warning you. Be prepared to argue into the night."

"I am- believe me." Yugi groaned, a hand rubbing his forehead as if to still a headache.

Yami tittered at the edge of the room near the door, unsure if he should interrupt what looked like a conversation (or argument) between friends.

Luck wasn't (or was) on his side though it seemed, as Yugi took that moment to crane his neck to where Yami was standing, his eyes lighting up. Yami suppressed a groan as he waved him over. Yami stepped lightly, his steps hesitant as he approached the two.

"Oh wow Yugi is this him? Your narcissism is showing with this one." The girl’s eyes gleamed with something predatory, like she was sizing up how long Yami would last in... Something.

"Would you please stop saying 'this one?' It implies I do this frequently- which I don't." Yugi said, shooting Yami an apologetic look. "This is Anzu- she works at the castle here-"

"You forgot to mention I'm your best friend." Anzu said in a sing song voice. Yugi shot her a look this time.

"Yes, and you're my annoying best friend." He turned back to Yami. "She's going to give you your tour, alright?"

Yami nodded. "Where are you going?"

"I have to go to court today. We'll see each other later, my dear Yami." Yugi smiled at him, reaching out to pat his shoulder as he passed him, disappearing out of the room.

Yami turned back around to immediately jump in surprise.

Standing way too close for comfort in front of him was Anzu. She had a wild grin on her face, like she knew a secret Yami didn't.

"Well well Yami. Looks like it’s just the two of us for the rest of the day." She practically purred.

"Uh... Okay... Should I be worried?" Yami frowned, not liking the glint in her eyes. It's like a maze of demons here, Yami observed. You turn away from one only to find another.

"Not at all," Anzu hummed, patting Yami's shoulder. "We're all friends here I assure you. Yugi wants me to take extra good care with you. And I must say- I can see why. You're a keeper."

"A keeper?" Yami's frown deepened, and he suppressed a sigh of exhaustion. Just what have I gotten myself into here? He was beginning to seriously regret his decision to break the elves' border seal now.

"Never mind." Anzu waved him off, trotting over to the door only to swing back around, her hand on the handle. "You coming? Yugi wants you to see the castle."

"Oh, right, of course." Yami muttered, following Anzu as she made her way out into the hallway.

"Alright, first things first- unless Yugi gives you public permission to travel around, don't go anywhere without an escort, okay?"

"Why? I'm not a kid." Yami scoffed.

"Mmm, technically you are to a lot of these folk. Most of the population in the kingdom are elves, and they tend to be a lot older than they appear."

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

LMAO YEAH REALLY WISH I DIDN’T HAVE TO WRITE THE REST OF PRINCE AND KING BUT WELP IT’S MY FIC AND I’VE COME THIS FAR SO I GOTTA FINISH IT RIP. I just reaaaaaally crave the day I can slap a COMPLETED on it :’’’’D

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

The plot! Mainly because fanfic so the chars already exist lmao. I usually start with one thing that catches my interest, and work out from there. Sometimes my AUs start from dreams, like Demon Prince started because I had a dream Yugi was a demon in jail trying to seduce Atem to come work for him so lmao there u go. 

P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)

I’m much more of an architect, because without a decent plot written out in front of my, in like a chapter by chapter format, I will easily lose motivation and focus because I won’t have a ‘oh yeah that’s what’s happening next!’ sort of thing. It helps with building up foreshadowing and stuff too for me. The stories I try to ‘gardener’ for I guess are the ones that often don’t see tumblr or AO3 lmao. AKA u will never hear of them because I have a few lmao.

Q: How do you feel about collaborations?

Interesting question! I suppose it depends what kind! I like collaboration ideas, in fact my first multi chapter fic The Living Daylights was a collaboration in ideas between me and my pal Ren! But I still wrote the entire thing lmao. I guess I like to have control over the writing for style consistency, but I think tackling the entire concept with another writer would be fun! I’ve never tried to write something with someone else so I dunno how that would go!

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

[kinda nsfw] INNOCENT PURE YUGI MUTOU WHO MUST ALWAYS BOTTOM FOR ATEM BECAUSE ATEM IS SEX GOD AND YUGI IS VIRGIN WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT SEX. Listen nothing rustles my JIMMIES more than that that troupe which is EVERYWHERE in puzzleshipping. I don’t understand why it’s so popular??? Like, this isn’t to say Yugi 100% CANNOT bottom because he totes can! But of ALL the puzzleshipping I’ve ever read that involved smut, especially in multi chapter fics, Yugi topped like... once, maybe??? ???? That’s SO MANY fics where Atem almost NEEDED to top. It kind of feels like people were too scared to write it at times? Like some stories I could totally see it either way, but it was ALWAYS with Atem topping, always. I don’t really understand why people are so against Yugi topping in puzzle but auuuugh I just wish there was more of it u know? Character in general: SO ATEM. When I first really got into the anime (dubbed) I really didn’t like him. He annoyed me, was too good, generally I’m not down with good characters. Like where is the fire and brimstone. BUT THEN I PICKED UP THE MANGA. And that’s when I began to like him, one hockey puck explosion later and I was in love. Slightly concerning that I didn’t like him until he did some questionable things like yoyo some holes into the floor and let some boys fall through the holes. BUT NOW WE’RE CHILL AND COOL.

How they play them: I was so intimidated by this blog for aaages when I first came because this Atem is s o good and I was like  s h i t  I am not worthy. I adore this Atem, he’s balanced that level of dark inside him with the things he learnt from Yugi, he’s still all about that justice and righteousness but isn’t afraid to get dirty. Incredibly 3-dimensional character profile who has clearly had lots of thought and work put into him, doesn’t let himself get pushed around by my brat of a thief. He’s very human with a touch of that God complex lurking. I love him to pieces.

Looking at your blog has me speculating arc v, and I just realized some shit. Did Kaiba not have any idea of what was happening at Academia? Does he ever find out? How do you think the series would've gone if he was involved?

Interesting question!

The one thing that we should probably always keep in mind is that KaibaCorp was the main force behind the development of duel holograms (season 1 of DM) and later, duel disks (DM through 5Ds). Just as we can’t the separate the contemporary card game from Pegasus, dueling technology can’t be separated from Kaiba. He and his company created the foundation on which every other dueling-related technological advancement stems from.

Which means that no matter what universe we’re talking about, Kaiba had to have existed in it. His life and his work is a ‘fixed point’, so to speak. And we know that although the meat of his story was told in DM, that he had a presence in both 5Ds (through the Momentum Generator) and GX (through Academia). Even in Zexal, the fact that duel gazers existence can be taken as proof that Kaiba was once alive.

Arc V’s version of Academia would not exist without Kaiba. But in order to fully answer this question, we’d have to look at the timeline of the five spinoffs and see how they connect.

@astraldirectrix and I were just talking about this recently, and we came up with a tentative theory. There are some vague points just because there isn’t any canon evidence either to support or refute the theory (though if anyone can think of anything, by all means, jump in). But stick with me, I have a method to my madness.

We know that DM-5Ds was one continuous timeline, but that things started getting dicey in the Zexal era. Unlike the first three, Zexal took place not in some incarnation of Domino City, but in an entirely new setting—Heartland. There were instances of people using Advanced, Fusion, and I thiiiiink even Ritual summoning, but not a word on Synchro. D Wheels were also never mentioned.

It’s almost as though… Zexal is what the world would have become, had Zero Reverse never happened.

Old theory, I know. But again, no matter the timeline, Kaiba exists. Zero Reverse was caused directly by the overload of Momentum, a form of energy developed by the MIDS group… founded and funded by KaibaCorp. So working on the assumption that 5Ds and Zexal are two completely different timelines: Zexal is specifically a version of the world where KaibaCorp never went into developing Momentum.

I know you asked about Kaiba and Academia. Don’t worry, I’m getting there!

Now, we know that one of Kaiba’s main, defining character traits is ambition. He’s a risk taker; the threat of disaster doesn’t deter him if he considers the goal to be worth it. So what would stop him from pursuing the development of Momentum?

We can theorize that in what would become the Zexal timeline, something happened to Kaiba towards the end of GX/the beginning of 5Ds’ backstory. Frankly, the only thing I could picture stopping Kaiba from running his company is death, so let’s go with that. Kaiba dies. Mokuba takes over. He continues to conduct research into dueling technology, but does not pursue Momentum energy. Thus, the development of D Gazers, the absence of D Wheels, XYZ instead of Synchro, ect.

So 5Ds and Zexal take in concert with one another, on alternative timelines. They happen, they end, that’s it.

Remember, DM and GX took place before all of this.

Then… something happens to merge the two timelines back together, thus creating the Original Dimension. The only thing I can think of is the creation of solid vision—a momentous occasion that would give duel monster spirits a physical host in the corporal world. We can theorize that it happened at once, in both timelines, allowing the worlds to merge.

And it’s necessary for this to happen, because both the history of 5Ds and Zexal would need to be present in the Original Dimension—because this is the only way both Synchro and XYZ monsters to exist at the same time.

And then, we all know what happened: Zarc goes wild, Ray stops him, the Original Dimension splits up into 4.

Because of this, the timeline is reset. The events of DM, GX, 5Ds and Zexal never happen. Several characters are reborn/remade to fit this new reality (Asuka, Jack, Crow, Kaito, possibly others). Everything is given a clean slate.

One of my favorite Arc V theories is the one stating that Zarc somehow took out our previous 4 protags, and replaced them with his own reincarnations. He would want to minimize the chances that his revival would be stopped, right? And if he couldn’t take out Ray specifically, then the least he could do was take out 4 proven, capable heroes.

And this is supported by the fact that the boys are all foils to the protags who correspond with their main summoning method. Yuya foils Yugi; Yuri foils Judai; Yugo foils Yusei; Yuto foils Yuma.

Back to Kaiba and Arc V’s Academia: Kaiba became the character we all know and love largely though his interactions with Yugi and Yami. Think back all the way to DM’s first episode: Kaiba attacks Grandpa, Yami duels and defeats him… and as a result, is able to exorcise the evil in Kaiba’s heart.

But in Arc V’s time, Yami isn’t around to do that, because Yugi isn’t there to finish the puzzle. So Kaiba stays just as he was in DM’s first episode, with every ounce of vitriolic evil that comes with it. And because everything happening in the four dimensions is happening in concert, there is no time for him to go through character development by any other means. Evil!Kaiba develops duel holograms, develops duel disks; Leo comes in with solid vision. The Fusion Dimension is morally decayed as a result.

I also believe that evil!Kaiba would have been the founder of Academia—whether or not he intended it to be a military school is unlikely, because even at his worst, he never wanted to be like Gozaboro. He founds it to operate as part duel school, part orphanage (seeing as Serena, Yuri, and possibly Sora were all born and raised there).

He runs the school from afar for a few years. Then Leo, in Standard, regains his memories, and for some reason chooses the Fusion Dimension as his base of operations.

And it’s here that we enter the realm of pure speculation. I… don’t see Kaiba willingly selling the school—evil or not, we know because of his history that he wouldn’t want it to be a place churning out child soldiers. I also don’t see Leo successfully deceiving Kaiba with what his intentions for Academia are, nor would he have been able to con Kaiba out of ownership.

You see where I’m headed, right? Leo likely took Academia from Kaiba by force. There’s no evidence that they were ever in any sort of partnership, and knowing them, they wouldn’t have worked well together anyway. There was probably a duel. Kaiba likely lost that duel. Leo, if he had the technology for it already developed, would have carded Kaiba to keep him out of the way.

So to answer your first two questions: Kaiba likely would have had an idea of what Leo’s plans were. He likely didn’t live long enough to stop them.

Now, for your last question: how would the series have gone had he been involved? Remember, Kaiba is still his early DM (possibly even season 0) self. He’s evil. He may not care for child soldiers or war, but that doesn’t make him a good guy. I could see him entering a partnership with Leo, all the while making plans to dispose of him at the right moment.

Would Leo tell Kaiba about Ray, and what his true plans were? Depends: would Leo know about Mokuba? Would this, their only true source of common ground, be something these two villains would ‘bond’ over?

Keeping in mind that here, Kaiba is evil—as opposed to Leo the anti-villain—I don’t think Kaiba would be sympathetic at all. He would regard Leo as laughably weak for not being able to protect his daughter, or his original home. I think he’d also be one of the few to see plain as day that all Leo’s plans are really doing is accelerating Zarc’s revival.

So things would have been different in that Academia’s internal structure would have been disorganized. There would be staff loyal to Kaiba, and staff loyal to Leo. Leo would have to deploy his troops behind Kaiba’s back. Kaiba, again, would be working constantly to get rid of Leo—because this is his home, his school, his students, his legacy, his domain. To Kaiba, Leo is an interloper who has to go, ASAP.

And let’s say he does get rid of Leo? If it’s before the invasion of Heartland, then fine. Leo’s gone, things go back to normal. Kaiba rules the Fusion D with an iron fist but doesn’t wage total war on a defenseless population—mostly because he’d have no reason to.

But if he isn’t able to do away with Leo until after the invasion? Especially if he’s already taken Ruri and Rin? Then shit just got real—because now the boys know when and how to find each other.

What he’d likely do is stop the invasion and send the girls back home, but… the boys still know how to find each other. Yuri has tasted enough power—and Yuto and Yugo, enough grief—for Zarc to awaken and influence them towards each other. So Zarc will be coming; it’ll just take longer. And by the time it does happen, Kaiba likely won’t intervene (seeing it as not being his problem) until it’s too late and the Supreme Dragon King is destroying Academia proper.

Above all, Kaiba would not be a hero here. He’d only be heroic in that he’d oppose Leo; and he’d only oppose Leo because their goals and values wouldn’t have much overlap.

As for Kaiba’s presence in Standard, the Sycnhro D, and the XYZ D? Kaiba could’ve been the one behind The City’s toxic capitalism-gone-wild political structure. Perhaps Standard is only as good as it is because of Yusho’s influence. We don’t know enough about the XYZ D to say why it’s a utopia, but… well, Zexal is the one world where Kaiba, presumably, wasn’t around to see himself. So maybe that could explain it.
