some fun news

this year’s depaul pop culture conference is themed around sherlock holmes and i’m going to be one of the people presenting!!!!!!

i’m so excited i might yark on the rug but anyway. the subject of my paper is going to be about the line between fan and expert/scholar within sherlock holmes studies and the hierarchy therein. i’m probably going to talk about meta writing and maybe put william s baring-gould on blast, who knows! but i hope i will do our little hovel justice<3

also arwel is gonna be there. so there is that.

#i will be very normal about it i promise #but holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im so excited #now to go from outline and bib phase to draft phase. pray for me #btw this paper isnt going to be A TJLC ESSAY there are enough of those from weirdo outsiders and i dont intend to invite more scrutiny lol.#but i am gonna talk about the level of fan engagement in communities like ours rises to compare to ~experts~ and sherlockian scholars #and question why there is a value judgement made on one versus the other #WSBG's sherlock holmes biography is as much a fannish work of imagination as anything else right #with the nero wolfe thing and all. come on #but why is that a bad thing and why cant we be honest about it!#a treatise against fandom cringe sort of but not really #more like a treatise about media studies and fandom and why when old white dudes do it it's scholarship and societies #and when young ppl/women/lgbt people do it it's fan clubs and obsession and cult behavior lol.#there is a meaningful difference between scholarship and casual enjoyment but like when youve written 100s of pages of meta doesnt that #line blur considerably? i think it does #sorry these tags are unwieldy my god
