Love yourself challenge

Okay so I have been tagged by a lot of people ( @cherrydreamer @prettyboyporter @thursday-knight and @gothyringwald ) to do this, and I’m sorry if it’s taken a while. It was fun, but also kinda difficult because this year has been ... well, I’ve had a lot to do with work and not really DONE a lot, I feel. But nontheless, the tag thingy shall be done! :D

1. Okay so like I said I haven’t done a lot, but I have done a couple of doodles, and out of them, maybe the quarantine one was the one that I was personally most entertained by? (Or *snort* the one time I drew naked Harringrove ... I totally blame @wrecked-fuse‘s gorgeous art for that one, and have to apologize for that one, once again ...)

2. Art-wise, it’s been a very very very lacking year. I was, however, inspired when I read @immortalitylostandfound‘s fic “He needs”, and had to draw what popped up in my head for that one. It’s not good but I’m proud of it nontheless. I haven’t really been drawing (not doodling) for fun in quite a while, so it was nice to do just that.

3. And speaking of art things ... This isn’t really a thing I’ve DONE, but it’s a thing I’ve been a PART OF. You know the “Summer of ‘85 Harringrove fanzine”? Well, I’ve been a part of that process, and I am ... in awe, over this fandom’s talent. I am very very proud to be a part of this fandom, and I am even more proud of being a part of such a great team. It has been a lot of work for everyone (special shout out to team leader supreme, @klayr-de-gall!!), but the result is turning out amazing and I can’t wait for everyone to see just that. Like. I’m getting emotional just talking about it. It’s not technically a work I’ve created (the doodle I did for that one - to @bentnotbroken1fanfiction‘s writing - is ... just a doodle), but it’s been the process of it.

4. I haven’t done a lot of art, but I have done some writing. And I guess the one that makes me smile the most is “Of Cats and Men” which somehow turned into 39K, just because I wanted that one scene with Billy and kittens (don’t you just hate it when you want ONE SCENE and then you have to write a whole fic around it?). It was fun to write, and people seemed to like it, which felt very rewarding.

5. I’ve been writing more fics than rhymes this past year, but I have done a couple. One of the ones I am most proud of is “Notes”, that I wrote for @socknonny after they donated for Harringrove for Australia for something including “secret love letters, with a somewhat angsty, pining mood“. I am pretty darn proud of that one, especially since I HEARD it (because socknonny recorded it and it is so so so so so much better now!! I still freak out every time I listen to it!)

I had to wear this thing called a halo, which is a weird thing that gets drilled into the front of your head (I have two tiny circular scars above each eyebrow from that) and on the back are some weights attached to it that hang down. It was put on after my spinal fusion surgery and is meant to keep your back straight and things in place. It was awful. And heavy. Do you prefer today's trends/styles, or ones from the past? Both have awesome stuff, there’s no need to pick. I’m really into the mom jeans of the 90s, but I also like the yellow trend that’s been going on recently.

Being too cold or too hot? I’d rather be shivering but be comforted with a thick blanket, than sweat bullets and have absolutely no way to cool myself down.

Uploading music to your iPod, or buying CDs? Depends. I used to buy the CDs of my favorite artists then just download the other music I’m not as passionate about.

Loote’s Take on Authentic Pop Music, New Relationships, and Shawn Mendes [Q&A]

In just over a year, Loote released their debut EP, collaborated with a range of artists from gnash, David Guetta, to Joe Jonas, and they are by no means slowing down. Originally signed to Universal Music Publishing Group as a songwriting/production duo, they began to find their signature sound following writing the mega-hit “No Promises” for Cheat Codes and Demi Lovato, as well as the release of “High Without Your Love” in 2017. As they’ve explored new collaborations and new relationships, they’ve collected their experiences into their highly anticipated EP.

Following in the wake of their single, 85% with gnash and downtempo ballad “tomorrow tonight,” comes the five-song lost. The collection explores both the awkward nuanced lingering of post-breakup relationships and the cautious excitement of new ones.

Full of sunny guitars and reminiscent of the upbeat pop-rock that largely filled the soundtrack of the late 00s, the titular track evokes a sonic throwback to the punky-but-uplifting music that Avril Lavigne dabbled in. However, Emma Block and Jackson Foote have no interest in rewriting the same story. “She’s All Yours” presents a different perspective in the messy aftermath of ended relationship, and the EP closes with the cautious “Are You Sure?” that dives into the uncertainties that comes with sharing a deeper part of yourself with someone new.

We caught up with the electronic-pop duo ahead of the last two nights of the Betty Who’s spring headlining tour in Los Angeles.

OTW: lost feels like a follow up to pure breakup songs. What was the most challenging part about writing this EP?

Jackson: Keeping things cohesive was kind of challenging because we like so many types of music and we have so many different inspirations and influences. But really, it doesn’t ever feel forced at all. It’s always challenging to write good songs, but a lot of these songs in a cohesive body of work like this EP are just a reflection of the reality of both of our lives, you know? It doesn’t always take an enormous amount of digging––we just try to look at things and be truthful and be honest, and to say, okay, how can we express that? This stuff is just the realities of what Emma and I are going through, and we’ve always found that we get the most pure, true material if we just talk about our lives and try to put in a poetic and relatable way.

OTW: Between this EP and your debut, single, you’ve collaborated with some producers that are more heavily involved in the dance scene. How do you balance writing for other people and maintaining your signature sound?

Jackson: There’s a very different distinction between our Loote stuff and when we write for other artists. A lot of times we’re thinking, “What’s the most fun concept?” or “What’s an interesting take on something?” and “What’s a really fun way to express it that a lot of people can relate to?” With the Loote stuff, those things apply, but the first priority is, “What’s truthful? What’s real about how we’re feeling and what’s going on in our lives?”

Emma: I agree with that 100%.

OTW: So many songs these days deal with unrequited love, like I love you, you don’t love me -- how do you try to tell that story in a unique way?

Emma: I think it’s the same thing as the difference between writing for other people and writing for us. It’s less about trying to find a unique way of saying it and just being the most truthful when we say it because at the end of the day it’s us, and I don’t want to misrepresent myself.

Jackson: And I think a lot of times we push ourselves to find truthful takes that aren’t as common, aren’t as––

Emma: Conventional.

Jackson: Yeah, aren’t as seen all the time and heard all the time. That’s where you find special ideas––like “She’s All Yours” is a great example. A lot of them come from conversations that we’re having where Emma will be talking about literally what that song is about, like “Oh yeah, he’s still messaging me that his new girlfriend is not into Fall Out Boy” and we’re sitting in the room with Andrew Goldstein (FRND) and the three of us go, “Well that’s an awesome idea to do a song about” because it’s truthful and it’s a little unique. So we try to let conversations flow and have no filter and then if something jumps up in the air we try to grab it and capture it.

OTW: Is your writing process different when the subject is more focused on new relationships and not breakups?

Emma: There’s a different approach for sure, but it’s not different in terms of the actual songs themselves. I’m not pulling teeth writing a song about somebody even though I’m in a happier relationship because there’s so many aspects of a relationship. It’s not a one or two dimensional thing. It’s like, this is a living breathing person that you’re sharing a lot of your time and energy and favorite and least favorite things with. There’s so much stuff in there, a lot of ups and downs––I mean, two out of the five songs off of that EP are about one person in particular, you know? That’s crazy that I can still end up writing these sad, melancholy-like, longing songs, even though I’m in a happier relationship. There’s so many times where it’s about me feeling doubtful about things, and that is something that everybody feels.

OTW: Could you share more about the last song on the EP, “Are You Sure?”

Emma: Jackson came in with a lot of that song already written one day, and I was just sitting there crying because I was like, “How is it that you came up with this and you are not me, but you wrote it and it’s about me?” That’s so weird.

Jackson: Yeah, that happens a lot.

Emma: It’s like having somebody write your biography and then you’re reading it as they’re writing it.

Jackson: Sometimes, you have a better take on something when you’re seeing something from the third person instead of the first person. In a way, I’m just absorbing what’s going on with Emma and have this full view of it because I’m not her, and I think sometimes that’s what enabled us to pull songs out of each other, like “Your Side of the Bed” was the same thing.

Emma: Right, that’s exactly how that started off. You know, Jackson’s not looking at it under a microscope, he’s seeing the whole picture. But I’m stuck in this one very specific moment because it’s my life and then all of a sudden, I have a narrator just telling the story.

OTW: Do you feel like you bring the writing out of each other?

Emma: Always.

Jackson: Yeah, 100%.

Emma: Jackson’s one of the few people that actually does that to me. He knows, I don’t know if he does it consciously, but for whatever reason it just works.

Jackson: Yeah, it’s something that evolves and becomes functional and effective when you just get to know somebody really well and become comfortable with them and have been working with them for a while, so that’s one of the main benefits of us working together for so long.

OTW: Is there ever this fear that your music comes across less authentically because it’s pop music?

Emma: I didn’t grow up listening to pop music, but I am a big fan of people I just like in general, who cares what genre you’re in. That’s how I feel about music. And most people are starting to feel the same way because of how many different crossovers and features there are. You’ll see them all on the same playlist, and for some reason, it’s all working because good music is good music. If you can get behind something, there’s no reason for somebody to knock your taste in music. When I was in high school, it wasn’t cool to be writing pop songs but that’s what I wrote, even though I listened to classic rock and show tunes. I was writing all these pop songs and I felt so lame because they sounded so “mainstream.” It wasn’t until I got to college until I realized there was a lane for that. It’s scary when you think about it as “too pop” but then you realize––

Jackson: We just make music we love, and we love what we make. And if other people love it, that’s awesome.

OTW: Is there anyone you haven’t worked with yet that you’d love to?

Jackson: Oh, the list never ends. I’d really like to work with Shawn Mendes at some point. I just think he’s brilliant, a world-class voice and entertainer, and one of the best role models in every sense of the way. An absolute expert at what he does from everything from songwriting to singing, whatever.

Jackson: ARIES, love him I’ve been obsessed. YUNGBLUD, for sure. He’s just so unique.

When asked how it feels to be 100 years old, Betty Reid Soskin gave a subtle shrug, smiled and said: “The same way I felt at 99.”

But she’s not just any centenarian: Soskin is the oldest active ranger in the National Park Service, and after celebrating her birthday on Sept. 22, she’s still going strong.

Seated in the study of her apartment in Richmond, Calif., while dressed proudly in her park ranger uniform, Soskin reflected on her life.

When it comes to sharing her story, Soskin is not shy: As a park ranger at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, she spends her days recounting her rich and complicated history, in the hope that her firsthand account will resonate with people and encourage them to share their own stories.

“I think everyone’s story is very important. There is so much diversity,” Soskin said. “It’s in that mix that the great secret of a democracy exists.”

It wasn’t until 21 years ago, though, that Soskin truly started telling her own tale — and it happened by coincidence. While working as a field representative for a California assemblyman, Soskin attended a meeting with planners from the National Park Service.

They were organizing the development of the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, created in 2000 to honor Americans on the home front who worked in various industries across the country to bolster the war effort.

The park paid homage to Rosie the Riveter, a pop culture icon, symbolizing civilian women who worked in shipyards and factories — assuming the vacated jobs of men off fighting — during the war. But the depiction of a red bandana-wearing white woman didn’t speak to Soskin’s own experience on the home front as a Black woman in segregated America, she said.

During the war, Soskin worked as a file clerk in a segregated union, Boilermakers Auxiliary 36.

“Black women were not freed or emancipated in the workforce,” she said in a 2015 interview with The Post. “Unions were not racially integrated and wouldn’t be for a decade. They created auxiliaries that all Blacks were dumped into. We paid dues but didn’t have power or votes.”

Sitting in that meeting with the National Park Service planners as the only Black person in the room, she realized something: “The history, as I had lived it, was nowhere in sight — not one minute of it.”

Soskin decided to change that. She became a consultant to the park in 2003 and a park ranger in 2007, at the age of 85. Sharing her story with as many people as possible, she decided, was her way of reclaiming her history and that of countless others whose tales have gone untold.

She’s become known for saying: “What gets remembered is determined by who is in the room doing the remembering.”

So, Soskin made it her mission to stay in the proverbial room — which, in her case, was in the park’s visitor center, where she has sat on a stool countless times, sharing her story with a room full of strangers.

When she recounts her history, “something comes alive in me,” she said.

Tom Leatherman, the park’s superintendent, said Soskin has had a profound impact on the park.

“She has been fundamental to us being able to tell a more complete story,” he explained. “She has become a symbol of how we can do a better job of incorporating stories that haven’t been shared before.”

Soskin has propelled the park, Leatherman added, to seek out other stories of people who have been marginalized, and ensure they are heard — including voices that are Latinx, American Indian, Japanese American and LGBTQ.

During her ranger talks, Soskin encourages audience members to “always ask questions,” she said. “If I was still asking the same questions that I was asking 10 years ago, I would be showing no growth at all.”

The content in her presentations is dictated, in large part, by what visitors want to know. Often, Soskin speaks of her upbringing in a tightknit Cajun-Creole family and of her experiences with racial discrimination growing up in Oakland, Calif.

After the war, she and her first husband opened a music store together, where they sold “race records” — music by and for people of color. Black artists didn’t record music with major record labels until the 1920s.

Music has always played an important role in Soskin’s life, she said. Not only does she appreciate listening to it, but she also enjoys producing it.

She started writing songs in the 1960s, “at a point in my life when I was having trouble trying to figure out where I was going,” she recalled. “I found that I could sing things that I couldn’t say.”

Over the years, Soskin — who has four children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild — wore many hats: mother, musician, civil rights activist, antiwar advocate and finally, park ranger. Her most recent role is what pushed her into the national spotlight.

Just like that, “someone dropped a uniform on the life that I was already leading,” Soskin said.

That very uniform has become a natural appendage to her small, 5-foot 3-inch frame. Wearing it, she said, feels right.

“Little girls that see me in uniform see possibility. They have a feeling there’s an option open to them that they wouldn’t have known otherwise,” she said. “I think that’s why I wear my uniform with such pride.”

Since becoming a ranger, Soskin was awarded the Silver Service Medallion by the National WWII Museum; was presented with a commemorative coin from President Barack Obama; and has written a memoir, “Sign My Name to Freedom,” which is being made into a documentary.

The media attention she’s received — especially in recent days — is very humbling, she said.

“I know that the people who are honoring me now are such important people, and I have no idea what anyone sees in me,” Soskin said shyly.

Either way, “I like it.”

Her most recent accolade came just in time for her 100th birthday: A local middle school was renamed after her.

“I didn’t know that would mean so much, except that it does, because I think that it means that I will go forward into history along with all the other people,” Soskin said, pausing to wipe a tear, “who have tried to make a difference.”

It amazes me how much I still remember considering I haven’t taken a Spanish class or even really practiced it in almost 10 years. :O I mean, I’ll occasionally try and speak it or if I hear or see it somewhere I’ll try to translate it, but it’s not very often, so I’m surprised I’m still able to at all.

92. Do you decorate your home for the holidays? Yesss. Well, for Christmas. I used to for Halloween, but I haven’t the past few years. I should do that this year.

94. Are you good at delegating group projects? I felt like I always had to take lead in group projects and make sure everything was getting done. I hated doing them, they stressed me out even more.

95. Do you know how to demonstrate things in order to show someone how to do something? I do feel like I suck at trying to explain things to others for the most part, but I guess it depends on the thing. 

96. In what ways do you deviate from “the norm”? I’m soon to be 31 years old and I still live at home with my parents, with no plans to move out anytime soon. I don’t have a job. I don’t have much, basically none, relationship experience. I’m a virgin. I’m just not a functioning adult.

97. How long after you take a painkiller does the pain start to dissipate? It typically takes about 30 minutes, but on really bad pain/flare up days it can take an hour or so and sometimes not until I have the next dose.

98. Do you feel the need to dominate in conversations? Nooo. I’m much more of a listener and I’ll throw the convo back to the other person.

99. Would you ever domesticate a wild animal? Why or why not? No.

104. What elevates your stress level? My heath, my life (including things related to my loved ones in my life, such as their health issues and things they’re dealing with/going through), and just...life in general, man. There’s a lot going on this year alone.

[Street Fighter V] Extra Battle: Viable Ryu

If you were lucky enough to get the Extra Boss Battle before July 1, 2018 you got a chance to fight Ryu dubbed "The Master" it cost 1000FM to fight him and just like with Fortnite Thanos was for a limited time this is something I want to see more of in the future with different games and even more possible limited time crossover events that keeps interest and can change, add, or improve gameplay keeping things fresh, fun and unpredictable for the gamer. I think both are cool ideas and watching MDZ Jimmy fight what he calls him Viable Ryu was funny and entertaining check it out. This was pretty cool I had just made a post about the new DLC character G and the speculation on who he is and some of the boss battles of SFV so it was cool to see the Ryu The Master "A True Martial Artist" in his traditional Gi. G and Ryu's rival Sagat are the last 2 planned DLC characters planned coming out later this year, and with ideas like this they can keep the game fresh for years to come.

VesperArcade has been putting up a lot of quality strategy and advice videos for many of the top games this year including the fighting game genre. With the release of the character called G getting closer wanted to revisit one of the best years for fighting games.

Extra Bonus:

With Street Fighter celebrating its 30th Anniversary and speculation on who G is, Mortal Kombat coincidentally just came off of celebrating its 25th Anniversary and many anticipating a new Mortal Kombat game (Mortal Kombat 11) and whether the game would take place before or after Armageddon. SMGxPrincess, Dynasty, BruskPoet, History Behind the Warrior and Super have some of the best informative, fun insights, and gameplay with Mugen creators Borg117 & Bleed having some of the best new gameplay ideas, and Mortal Kombat Addict has his own Krypt Secrets with some of the best Mugen Mortal Kombat games. Mortal Kombat has a huge following and a strong enough background to keep the game going with all the secrets and characters already in the game but it would still be cool to see something new. Many wanted a crossover game with Street Fighter or even Killer Instinct but on its own it is still one of the top fighting games of the genre.

Kreate-a-Fighter was one of the best features from Mortal Kombat Armageddon between that and the Epic Gears and Shaders from Injustice 2 they are the perfect combination.

Update: 

Dynasty has just posted New Mortal Kombat details in the form of a movie instead of the anticipated Mortal Kombat 11 game. Here they introduce a new character and a new story not necessarily what we know of Mortal Kombat. More of a spin off or a custom Mugen game, even though I was hoping for some kind of answer what happens after Armageddon I welcome any new idea and if done well it can work even though not canon (like the Japanese/Chinese relationship with Liu Kang & Kung Lao - ninja/shaolin monk brother relationship but without stereotyping it can happen right? I'm sure they will explain it like they picked which martial art or style they wanted when they were young). Mortal Kombat Rebirth pitch wasn't exactly canon either but looked good enough that we wanted to see it anyway. They did Mortal Kombat Legacy 1 & 2 instead but Mortal Kombat Rebirth I think would have worked. 

New ideas sometimes keeps interest just like in the Kreate-a-Fighter post where Dynasty, Brusk Poet, SMGxPrincess and other fans game post ideas that gamers actually want as well as Borg117, Bleed, and Mortal Kombat Addict reinventing Mortal Kombat with gameplay that adds new experiences. RED FACTION GUERRILLA RE-MARS-TERED AND SAINTS ROW IS BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE!

Volition earlier in the year was bought by THQ Nordic reuniting them with old Volition titles from the past like Summoner and Red Faction. If you are not familiar with the Red Faction series you are in luck Red Faction Guerrilla is being remastered and if that’s not enough Saints Row 1 and 2 are now backwards compatible on the Xbox One. MrSaintsGodzilla21 has posted 2 videos so you can see how well these two have been upgraded as well as detailed explanation.

Agents of Mayhem had mixed reviews when it came out but it was a different perspective that even though is chaotic it is different enough you won’t confuse it with a Saints Row game kind of how Saints Row the Third separated itself from being a GTA clone. Jamie Foxx has been confirmed to play Spawn in this new reboot by the comic creator and artist Todd McFarlane in association with Blumhouse Productions which made news last year with its movie Get Out. It is said that they are taking more of a horror approach, as well as Spawn not really speaking. That works good with Jason or Michael Myers but some dialog would be good I hope they rethink that. I would like to see what the official word is from Todd McFarlane himself but Spawn not saying anything doesn’t sound right to me.

Since Spawn has been anticipated by fans of the comic, movies and video games here is the History of Spawn by Variant very entertaining and knowledgeable to watch and History of the Warrior talks about the real reason Spawn wasn’t in Injustice 2 well thought out and entertaining.

WILL 2 JOKERS BE THE BRIGHT IDEA THAT WILL DO DC COMICS JUSTICE?

If you had to choose the next Joker movie to be based around the one from Batman or Suicide Squad which would you pick? Personally as a fan of Suicide Squad and wanting to see something new I think it was good news that Jared Leto was getting an opportunity to play that version of the Joker to see where the story goes as this version looks different and even acts different. But for the sake of argument Joaquinn Phoenix playing the original Joker and having this version also a standalone movie seems like the best of both worlds.

MCU Could Tackle Horror Genre According to Kevin Feige

Marvel is thinking about getting in on the horror movie action and thinking about a few characters like Man-Thing and Blade. Blade one of the more popular characters in the Marvel Comics Universe already has a trilogy out on DVD and Blu-ray but getting a revamp wouldn’t hurt and I would like to see the direction they would. There is currently a Blade television show called Blade The Series you can watch now on the CW staring Kirk Jones (Sticky Fingaz from the group Onyx)

Batman: Return to Arkham includes what is considered to be 2 of the best games ever made now remastered for the new generation of players on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. The game comes with 2 classics Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. With the power of the Unreal Engine 4 giving it that graphical upgrade it looks better then before. Even though it has received mixed reviews it is still worth the pick up whether you are a new to the series or played it on the previous systems.
