What is Therapeutic Recreation (TR)?

According to Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO), TR can be defined as, “a process that utilizes functional intervention, education and recreation participation to enable persons with physical, cognitive, emotional and/or social limitations to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently with the least amount of assistance and participate as fully as possible in society,” (2023). But what does that really mean? What do Recreation Therapists actually do? Rec Therapists are trained professionals who practice in clinical and/or community settings (2023). Clinical settings are places such hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities, while community settings are places such as community recreation centres, schools, and sports centres. In these different settings, Rec Therapists have a variety of responsibilities, but at the core of all Therapeutic Recreation work is a professional helping groups or individuals improve their quality of life through meaningful participation in recreation and leisure (2023). Recreation and leisure is a huge category that encompasses many different activities. Below are some examples of recreation and leisure: - sports and exercise (ex. walking, weightlifting, dancing, soccer, volleyball, tennis) - art (ex. drawing, painting, colouring, sculpting, knitting, embroidery) - gardening - spending times with friends and/or family - cooking - baking - yoga - meditation - reading - birdwatching - doing a puzzle - board games - video games - going to a museum or art gallery Another big part of a Rec Therapist’s role is adapting activities so that the participants can engage fully and get the most out of the activity. For example, for individuals with mobility issues, yoga may be adapted into chair yoga so that it is more accessible to these individuals. Another example could be painting with fingers and sponges for individuals who may have an issue with gripping a paintbrush. In Therapeutic Recreation we want to make activities accessible to everyone because everyone can benefit from therapeutic recreation and leisure. The last vital part of TR that I will touch on in this post is the domains of wellness. The theory of domains of wellness posits that for an individual to achieve optimal quality of life, each of the six domains of wellness must be addressed. The six domains are: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, behavioural, and social (2023). These domains can be addressed and improved in an individuals life through recreation and leisure activities. To conclude, Therapeutic Recreation is a complex and diverse profession which is based upon the improvement of individual’s lives through meaningful engagement in various recreation and leisure activities. My Connection to Nature & It's Evolution

Hey everyone, welcome to my blog!

Today I'll be discussing my relationship with nature and its evolution over the years.

As I’ve progressed through university, I’ve found myself developing a greater appreciation of nature. Not that I ever didn't respect or appreciate it, but it was just always there, so I never took the time to truly immerse myself in its entirety. That's kind of the reality of growing up; you learn that life isn't simple and easy but rather that things can change quite quickly. When I was a kid I never thought about the future of the planet or of the colossal impacts we have on our environment. Now that I’ve grown up and taken classes detailing the science behind our planet and environment, I know how fragile it is and how unpromised its future is. 

I grew up in Sudbury, Ontario. Sudbury is a city in northern Canada known for its rich natural surroundings and historical significance. The city is located on the Canadian Shield, and as such, has an abundance of rocky terrain and greenery. My house was 30 minutes out of town and ‘deep into the bush’ as some would say (I've included a picture below for context). Due to this, I was surrounded by forests and lakes with really no urban influence. Living there, surrounded solely by nature, I found a “sense of place”. Nature was not just a backdrop in Sudbury; it was an intrinsic component of my daily life. The trees provided a safe place, the lakes brought serenity, and the hard terrain was like a huge playground. Growing up I had a deep connection with the land, creating memories that were linked with the rustling of leaves, the smell of fresh pine, and the cool winds that blew around us while we played outside. As we had no real neighbours and about 140 acres of land with our house, me and my brother were often left to do whatever we pleased outside. This allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in nature and, honestly, gave us no other choice even if we didn't want to play outside. There was nothing even remotely close; just us and nature. This led to me having a more recreational connection to nature. I think this is why as a child I never truly appreciated nature, as I thought that it was just standard to always have it around us. It was only when I was old enough to understand the realities of the world that I developed a stronger appreciation for nature. 

Over the last several years, I've been fortunate enough to have taken various courses and learned a lot about nature. So far, Climate Change Biology (ENVS*3010) has by far been my favourite and truly opened my eyes about our impacts on the environment. As a result, my viewpoint on nature as a whole has changed significantly. I have also developed new kinds of connections with nature recently, including therapeutic, scientific, and sustainable-based connections. I now use my early memories as a source of reflection and thankfulness, displaying the long-term evolution of my relationship with nature. 

I also have such a love for nature as it allows me to spend time with my family. Going out for walks and looking at all the diverse scenery is a great way to clear your head and take in its beauty. Recently, I've been training my new puppy how to walk on her leash. My parent's house is up north still so there aren't any sidewalks. Due to this, it's been challenging to get her to stay on the side of the road and walk off the paved road when cars pass. She seems to love cars so this has been quite a challenge. Especially when she tries to run in front of them or after them 🙃

Reform Once More

"The reformers of the 1920s and 1930s kept up their efforts for improvements in the face of some frustrating circumstances. One of the most encouraging developments during the period came with the appointment by the federal government in 1936 of a royal commission to investigate the penal system of Canada. The mandate included the treatment of young offenders. Justice Joseph Archambault chaired the commission, which reported its findings and recommendations in 1938. In the section pertaining to juveniles, the report suggested that for serious cases a more structured procedure was needed before convicting juveniles. This procedure should include a formal charge, evidence presented under oath in the presence of the accused, and the accused entitled to counsel. Cases of minor offences, in contrast, should be dealt with by the courts in a ‘social clinic” context. They called for less formality, such as dispensing with judicial robes. Presiding officers should be called children’s magistrates or, in French, “magistrates des enfants.”

The commissioners called for properly educated magistrates and probation officers and for the widespread use of psychiatrists’ and pre-trial reports. They favoured the expansion of children’s courts and the increased use of foster homes rather than reformatories. The report recommended that training schools be located in the country, and that their programs include ample recreation and competitive games. The mainstay of the rehabilitation treatment would consist of “rigid discipline, efficient education, and ample healthful physical work.” The commissioners also called for a good classification system and the segregation of the mentally deficient. In keeping with their desire to create treatment programs that were more therapeutic, the commissioners recommended the establishment of boards of commissioners for each training school. Members would help out with the program and would visit the children. The report also underlined the importance of crime prevention and called on the public, the churches, and social service agencies to cooperate in preventing juvenile crime. There was little that was new in the recommendations on juveniles in the Archambault Commission Report. Most, if not all, had been circulating in reform circles for many years, and some dated back to the nineteenth century. Locating reformatories in rural areas, for example, was a long-standing issue. Critics argued that it was of little use to take urban youth, locate them in the country, train them in farming skills, and then release them to live and work in towns and cities. The many old ideas contained in the report once again illustrated how little real progress had been made over the years and how long it took to get ideas translated into action. Nevertheless, the report focused public attention on the need for action and provided a blueprint for government."

Towering Toronto Trading!

Canadian traders, investors and advisors showed up in strength last weekend for the Toronto MoneyShow at the Metro Toronto Convention Center in the shadow of the CN TOwer overlooking Lake Ontario. The folks up there in the Great White North were thoroughly engaging and on top of their game.

After my workshop on Tactical Trades for the Q4 Pre-Election Year Rally I hosted interviews with Patrick Ceresna, Founder & Chief Derivative Strategist at BigPictureTrading.com. We discussed Patrick’s outside the status quo approach where he starts with a macro top-down view and then optimized his analysis with technical analysis and option strategies. Plus his outlook for the next commodity bull market. I’ll be on Patrick’s podcast in November when the 2020 Almanac comes out.

Next I interviewed Allan Rewak of Emerald Health Therapeutics (EMHTF) a Canadian cannabis licensed producer that sells dried cannabis and cannabis oil for medical and recreational purposes. This vertically integrated, seed-to-sale enterprise is on the verge of profitability.

Rob Carrick, the renowned investing and personal finance columnist at The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper, sat down with me next to discuss his passion for everything ETFs, his penchant for indexing and dividends and his views on online brokers and robo-advisors.

I spent the rest of the day immersed in the MoneyShow’s Cannabis Investing Event where the prospects for a rebound in the beaten down cannabis stock sector appear to be improving. Whatever your position or take on the cannabis industry, it sure looks like its here to stay.

The researchers analyzed the data from two double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies. They looked at the analgesic effects of marijuana in 42 respondents who were recreational marijuana smokers.

Some were given active marijuana to smoke and others smoked a placebo form of marijuana. The respondents were then asked to immerse their hands in a cold-water bath until the pain became unbearable. It was followed by a short pain questionnaire which the respondents had to answer.

Among those who smoked active cannabis, men reported a significant decrease in sensitivity and an increase in pain tolerance. But women did not notice any remarkable decline in pain sensitivity, albeit they reported a slight increase in pain tolerance immediately after smoking active cannabis.

None of them, neither a man nor a woman, reported any differences in his or her level of intoxication or the extent of the effect of the active marijuana.

Researchers call for further studies

To know more about the impact of analgesic effects of cannabinoids, the active chemicals found in cannabis products, their strength, the efficacy of the delivery mode (smoked vs. oral), usage frequency and measuring the types of pain, etc., the researchers called for further studies.
