Immigration Fiasco: International Students

It’s nothing new. Tory government ministers contradicting each other and contradicting their own policies.

In March 2019 the Tory government announced plans to increase the number of overseas students.

“Government has published a new International Education Strategy outlining plans to increase student numbers and income generated from international education.” (www.gov.uk: 16/03/19)     

The plan was to increase international student yearly numbers from 460,000 to 600,000  by 2030.

Following on from the success of this Tory immigration policy, the then Home Secretary Priti Patel, introduced a complimentary scheme (The Graduate Route) to allow international graduates to remain in the UK after graduation.

“Priti Patel Launches Graduate Route For Best And Brightest International Graduates...The Graduate route provides an opportunity for talented international graduates who have been awarded their degree from a UK university to stay in the UK and work, or look for work, at any skill level for at least two years."  (KeepTheFaith: 03/07/21)

This Tory policy proved to be so popular that the target recruitment figure of 600,000 by 2030 was reached much earlier.

Enter Suella Braverman and Rishi Sunak. Suddenly, the mood music has changed. Now we are being told we have TOO MANY overseas students. Cutting immigration is top of the Tory agenda because they rightly or wrongly believe being tough on immigration (of ALL kinds) is a vote winner.

“Legal migration too high, says Sunak." (BBC News: 19/05/23)

Backed up by his Home Secretary Suella Braverman, the goal is now to REDUCE the number of international students staying in the UK .

“Suella Braverman is set to restrict number of foreign students who can stay in UK after finishing their studies.” (MailOnline: 15/10/22)

Followed half a year later by this headline:

“Suella Braverman announces crackdown on foreign student visas.” (inews: 23/05/23)

You really cannot make this stuff up! One Tory government has a successful policy to encourage international students to enrol at UK universities, only to witness another Tory administration a few months later complaining numbers are too high. The irony is that if numbers are too high, they only have themselves to blame.

With the news of no active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand. Universities are discussing plans to use charter flights to assist international students in coming into New Zealand, while the Australian Chamber of Commerce has suggested a ‘trans-Tasman bubble’ to allow Australians and New Zealanders to move freely between the two countries.
