Album Review: George Harrison "Living in the Material World" 50th Anniversary Edition
Through this blog I've had the honor of covering The Beatles a number of times over the years and just this month I got to review their new box set. Now I am getting the chance to review a new reissue from my favorite Beatle, the Quiet One himself, Sir George Harrison. In 2021 I got to review the 50th anniversary edition of his magnum opus All Things Must Pass, but this is only the second time I've gotten to review a Sir George album. Now to celebrate the 50th anniversary (actually the 51st but who's counting!?!), Living in the Material World is getting the deluxe edition treatment.
album cover
Originally released on May 30, 1973, it went to #1 on the album charts and went gold in the U.S. It got a remastered released in 2006. Then it was remastered again for inclusion in the 2014 box set The Apple Years 1968-75 (which I named my #1 Reissue Album of 2014). This new 2024 edition was overseen by George's widow Olivia and son Dhani, who have done a great job with his reissues since George's 2001 passing, and a new mix from Paul Hicks, who is part of Dhani’s band Thenewno2 as well as a noteworthy producer who worked on the music for the documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Disc 1 is the 2024 mix of the album. Disc 2 is alt versions and alt takes. Some versions also include a 7" single of the newly unearthed "Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away Raymond)" and a blu-ray of the deluxe edition in blu-ray audio. There's also some excellent liner notes and photos from that era.
50th anniversary edition
For the album itself, it was a solid follow up to All Things Must Pass...even if it wasn't nearly as amazing as that album. It kicks off with "Give Me Love (Give me Peace on Earth)", the only single off that album. Then it goes into "Sue Me, Sue You Blues", one of the many examples on Beatle solo albums where they were lashing out at each other on their own albums, i.e. John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?", only this was Sir George's sadness about all of the lawsuits between The Beatles and each other. The album features some trusty musicians including Sir Ringo Starr, who shared drum duties with Jim Keltner, and the late great Gary Wright on keys. But much of the album is about living in the material world and searching for a higher guiding light beyond material things (I'm sure there's a joke that could be made about this box set being a material thing fans need to buy!?!). You always felt like Sir George was hunting higher game than other rockers of his era, especially when you hear an album like this. The alternative takes and rarities are interesting but don't really add much to the album. In the end, it's great to see this get the remastered treatment it deserves!
For info on Living in the Material World
Original album: 4 out of 5 stars
50th Anniversary Edition: 3.5 out of 5 stars

so, to someone who is starting, what music should i get into first in dhanis and julians career?
Well, I started with Julian's most recent, Jude. It's really good. He does have a similar sound to John. There's not a skip on the album.
And Dhani, I started with IN///PARALLEL, his first solo album. All of the songs on it are good save for the one about Poseidon bc it's got weird effects. And he has his new album too, INNERSTANDING. The opening song on that one is weird, don't let that throw you off.
He has albums from a couple bands, thenewno2 and Fistful of Mercy, but their sound is more rock oriented, not a ambient or electronic.
And with Dhani's solo albums, do NOT go in expecting to hear George's style of music. You'll be disappointed if you do. He's tried to distance himself musically, which, wise move.

HEAR: Dhani Harrison - “New Religion (Ft. Graham Coxon)”
Multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning musician and composer, Dhani Harrison, has released INNERSTANDING, his first solo album in six years. The new album is available now digitally, with a 2LP Neon Yellow color vinyl edition being available on February 9th, 2024, via H.O.T. Records/BMG. The album features Blur’s Graham Coxon on several tracks, including the single “New Religion”, as well as guest appearances from Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit and critically acclaimed Australian singer Mereki. Watch the visualizer for “New Religion (feat. Graham Coxon)” below: “Here we are in a new world and here is the new album that has come forth from it.” Dhani Harrison on his new album, Harrison previously previewed the album with the single “Damn That Frequency”, which also featured Coxon on saxophone – stream HERE. In addition to his appearance on that track, Coxon also features on guitar on four other songs on INNERSTANDING. The album was produced by Harrison and co-mixed with GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Paul Hicks (The Beatles, Joe Strummer, The Rolling Stones). Originally stepping onto the global stage with his band thenewno2, Dhani Harrison first earned critical acclaim for his innovative sound and approach with performances at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and on multiple late night TV shows. However, it was as solo artist that Harrison truly demonstrated his creative autonomy. 2017’s IN///PARALLEL served as a testament to his evolution as a musician, weaving intricate melodies and a subject matter that forewarned much of what the world has experienced in the years following its release. Rolling Stone hailed IN///PARALLEL writing that it was “psychedelia-tinged journey into modern-day disconnect.” Harrison is also known for scoring film and TV projects as well as collaborating with an array of diverse artists including Wu-Tang Clan, UNKLE, John McLaughlin, Annie Lennox, Pearl Jam, Nitin Sawhney, Perry Farrell, Prince, Regina Spektor, and Fistful of Mercy (alongside Ben Harper & Joseph Arthur). Since his 2013 debut as a composer on Richard La Gravenese’s Beautiful Creatures, Harrison has gone on to score the Sundance Award- winning MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A., for which he and his scoring partner Paul Hicks received an International Documentary Association (IDA) Award nomination for “Best Music Score Award.” Additional scores include R.Z.A.’s CutThroat City, Obey Giant – The Story of Shepard Fairey, Amazon’s original series Good Girls Revolt, Showtime’s White Famous, and the much-lauded HBO docuseries, The Case Against Adnan Syed. As an artist who defies categorization, Harrison continues to explore the boundaries of music and creativity. His ability to seamlessly blend diverse influences while maintaining his individuality has solidified his place as a contemporary musical visionary. With each new composition, performance, and collaboration, Dhani Harrison invites us to join him on a sonic journey that knows no limits. Read the full article

Happy Birthday Dhani Harrison!
On this day in 1978, Dhani Harrison was born in Windsor, Berkshire, UK to proud parents George and Olivia. Between his work with Thenewno2, Fistful of Mercy, and he is also quite the solo artists as well. I've been lucky enough to do album reviews of IN///PARALLEL and INNERSTRANDING. I even included INNERSTANDING on my Best Albums of 2023 list.
Here is the official music video for "I.C.U.". Happy 46th Dhani!

Being a musician whose parents are hugely famous can have a share of perks, though we can agree this type of players have to prove more later on. Sure, they can easily churn out their debuts, yet they eventually reach the point, where they have to show they are more than their name. This might be the reason Dhani Harrison formed Thenewno2, since he wished to hide his name behind a faceless entity. The early works of the band did achieve this thanks to them sounding unlike anything Dhani's father did. Sure, you can point the similarities between their voices and the vicinity of their soundscapes might be close, though Thenewno2 felt something closer to the indie rock of the time than a possible modern revival of Fab Four.

@missanthropicprinciple tagged me to do top 7 albums
My music collection is VERY extensive, so my top favs change all the time, but here are some I absolutely love in no particular order.
Skylarking - XTC
Love me some Swindon boys. Xtc has so many great albums, but Skylarking will always have a special place in my heart. I adore albums where the songs flow beautifully into another.
Modern Life Is Rubbish - Blur
Ok, so y'all who know me know I'm obsessed with Blur, so it kills me to pick a fav. Modern is a beautifully depressing album, peppy, yet down.
Separations - Pulp
You bet your ass I'm gonna have more than one britpop band on this list. Jarvis is a killer song writer, and this album has some good tunes. Enchanting melodies with depressing lyrics is always a bop in my book. Also, any pulp album that has my boy russell is Great. Later pulp is good, just lacking in the violin department..
Stop Making Sense - The Talking Heads
THE best concert film. EVER. Also, Tina Weymouth and her murderous bass, must I say more?
You Are Here - Thenewno2
Dhani Harrison definitely inherited his father's amazing musical talent. I sorely miss this band, last release was 2013. I was lucky enough to see them open for black rebel motorcycle club back in 2013. I'm planning on getting one of those dudes from the cover as a tattoo.
The Spinning Top - Graham Coxon
Graham's songwriting was sidelined by damon's in blur, so his solo career is heaven. The album's a few years before this one were more upbeat and instrument heavy, the spinning top is a wonderful break from his usual telecaster ways. Acoustic guitar frontline and his soothing vocals. The cover is possible to be my second graham tattoo.
Night Thoughts - Suede
Brett's vocals are a lot rougher than they used to be, but I love night thoughts regardless. Another album that flows nicely together, it paired with a film they did of the same name. Erie tunes to chill and depress.
It's 3am as I type this so excuse any typos or grammatical errors.
Honorable mentions,
In//parallel - dhani harrison
Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette
Trainspotting Soundtrack
And the entire careers of the artists I chose.
