If these types ever took the time to just think about it without consulting some other lazy fuck to make sure this line of questioning isnt gonna send them to Hell then they'd probably end up waking every day intent on pursuing personal strife upon themselves showing initiative without begging for attention so they can become stronger and more powerful because then there'd be more energy transfer happening sorry but that's just my personal opinion so yeah basically anyone who calls themselves a person of god and has every opportunity to exert worthwhile effort into the world but is instead useless and stupid is just using their personal beliefs as a cope. I've only engaged in prayer when I knew I was strong so I could personally try to will the force I've cultivated to leave my body and be given to my cat so he could have a few extra days of life and it made me SICK and then I went and took care of him in those final days I was afforded. You cant just sit around close your eyes and say "dear god please help da starving children in war torn countries pretty please" then throw yo hands up like u done or given anything and leave it up to a god because "that's what god is for" I will never understand. Why would god be "for" anything as though summoning the very thought were a hammer. With that mindset of course all you see is metaphysical nails IDIOT you're the nail and you're the hammer. But dont consult me about it maybe you're some other shit I dont know

Hey uh sorry so i don't know if this is the right place to ask but heck i have searched the internet for answers and i still dont have one, and i have no money to talk to some professional about it. So, when do you think it is appropriate to start looking into colleges? I am still in highschool, second year out of four and i want to study abroad, specifically in an english speaking country (i am not from one) and i want to study film. I am really serious about this, and i've got a ton of anxiety, so i feel a strong need to know my future point by point and also to know the deadlines for my decisions.
Hey! This is a great question, and honestly, it is different for everyone.
I think there is never harm in starting to explore your options, especially since you are in your second year of high school, it might be a great time to start figuring out what kind of classes certain programs might require for the program you'd like to pursue.
You can even just start by picking your top 10 schools, then go through each one with more detail (money, location, program, resources for international students, etc) then you can kind of narrow it down to your top 5 schools, and deep dive into the program and see if maybe some schools have more courses that interest you, or more opportunities or co-op programs, etc.
But, don't feel like you have to do all of this now, because things change, you've still got two years left. But if you start by narrowing down your top 10 schools, and see what kind of admission requirements they have you can see if there are specific courses in high school that are required, for example, maybe you'd need calculus instead of just regular basic math, does that make sense lol
Don't stress too much right now, and to be honest, you'd be surprised how much things change between now and graduation and then actually attending university.
I'll give you an example from my own life:
In high school, I was very much by the book, had a plan, wanted to follow that plan and had wild anxiety if I had to make changes to my plan.
I was stuck between wanting to study theatre and social work for a while, but then I decided I wanted to pursue social work. The thing is, the school that I wanted to apply to required at least two years of university before I could apply for that program, so I had to adjust my plan. So I went to a different university to study child and you care, but only ended up doing 2 years there and then transferred to a university in a different province to complete a completely different degree. What I ended up with, was a BA in Sociology with a concentration in family, community, and health, a minor in criminology and a minor in psychology. Now I am working on trying to go back for another undergrad in psychology.
so... with all that being said, just know that it's okay if your plan doesn't always end up working the way you thought, or if you decide halfway through that you want to change your mind, or if you need to take a year off to get some experience first, or if your dream school doesn't accept you, just know you will figure it all out and sometimes you just have to take things one day at a time.
So for now, just start exploring some options, but don't feel like you have to solidify our life plan, you have time, just be gentle with yourself🤍
Sorry for the long response hahaha I hope some of this helps 🤍
Keep me updated with how things are going, if you want!

sk8ter boi ; c.bg
summary : he was a boy, she was a girl. can i make it anymore obvious?
pairing : skaterboy!beomgyu x reader
warnings & other : reader already has a child with yeonjun ok, beomgyu still pining after all these years, based off queen avril lavigne’s sk8ter boi song, listen while reading if you want
w/c : 2.1K (i may have gotten carried away)
"where'd you get that note and roses from?" your friend maria asks you when you get into class. you wipe away your smile quickly, already knowing who the mystery person was. "i don't know."
yeah, of course you knew. how could you not when the boy oh so clumsily shoved them in your locker while you were literally turning the corner. he tried to act like he wasn't doing anything but he was clearly caught. he tried to play it off in the best way possible and smooth talk his way into a conversation with you but you shut him down due to the bell ringing.
"oh- oh ok sure...yeah," beomgyu stumbled over his words, nervousness eating away at him with you being here. "yo gyu you coming? i just finished fixing my drum kit," his friend, jeongin, calls him over, interrupting your already over conversation.
"you should go...but thanks for whatever you just threw in my locker," you laugh. he nods hesitantly, rubbing the back of his head with his hand. "dude," jeongin now stands in your vicinity. he looks at you and beomgyu before pulling away his best friend to where the spare band room was.
"well open the letter, we wanna know who your little secret admirer is," maria says, leaning onto your desk. your other friends agree, eager to know who was pining over you. you laugh nervously before opening it. you're not sure how they'll react to finding out that it's beomgyu.
you see, you wouldn't exactly call yourself the prettiest girl in the school but hell it sure was close. almost everyone would compliment you every day even if it was something minor like a change in your nail color. you kind of prided yourself in that, not to gas yourself up or anything.
someone like beomgyu...well. he wasn't exactly the ideal guy, to put it simply. he was a skater boy, he hung out with the "simple boys" who skated and did music and hung out around the skate parks after school. he wasn't the scholar type like soobin or the athlete type like yeonjun, he was simple.
you liked simple but your friends didn't. they had preferences for people like soobin and yeonjun, not people like beomgyu. you could probably guess they felt like beomgyu was the bottom of the barrel, like a roach on their foot not worthy of their time.
you pull the letter out of the envelope. for some reason without even trying, you could smell his cologne all over it. you want to smile at the obvious try hard gesture but your friends don't allow it. "what the fuck is that smell, it's so strong," maria gags. you roll your eyes at her dramatics. "it doesn't smell that bad."
"yes the fuck it does," she retorts. "just see what it says." you read over the letter, smiling at certain parts where you could tell he'd done his research on the things you liked. "it's from beomgyu," you say when you finish the letter. you already knew this anyway but maria's eyes go wide and she suddenly snatches the letter from your grasp. "hey!"
"CHOI beomgyu?" she asks while she reads the letter herself. "yeah?" you confirm.
your other friends mumble amongst themselves and you can hear some snicker. "y/n you could do so much better. beomgyu is like a street rat or something. don't do that to yourself," she laughs like it's the funniest thing she's ever said. you don't think beomgyu's that bad but you also don't stand up for him, simply biting your lip as she continues.
"he barely comes to school and when he does all he does is sleep. he skates with those other weirdos and thinks he's gonna make it big with his shitty guitar playing- i mean have you heard him?" she rolls her eyes, throwing the letter back on your desk. "you should go out with yeonjun, i think yall would be a cute couple. the prettiest girl with the coolest guy, your babies would be so damn cute."
"babies?!" you laugh at her ridiculousness. "yes! have you seen choi yeonjun?" she sighs in content. "anyways, don't pay beomgyu any mind because he's not gonna make it in life. go for someone like yeonjun and please for the love of god throw that letter away!"
you never did throw the letter away. you sigh as you think back to your high school years. you had just found it hidden behind one of the closet drawers while you were looking for valkyrie's binkie. she was crying so much since her father had gone out for the day and you were stuck taking care of her, as always.
you wonder how beomgyu was doing. you both talked after the fact but fell off during college since he had gone off to do his own thing. you didn't know what that thing was but you were proud of him nonetheless. you finished high school, went to college, got a good paying job, and were now married with a kid. all at the young age of 21. the typical life, you figure.
you're snapped out of your thoughts when you hear your child crying in the next room. "shit," you mumble to yourself. you leave the letter in your drawer and head back to the living room with the binkie. "valkyrie~" you sing song.
she continues crying, not giving a fuck about your efforts to calm her. she was usually a bit of a daddy's girl. "val please stop crying," you exasperate. "daddy's not coming home until late today. cut me some slack babygirl."
you slip the binkie into her mouth but her shrill cries go right through it. "let me go see if you need a diaper change," you mutter.
before you can even get up from the couch you hear your phone ring from somewhere in the couch. "shit where did i put my phone?" you put valkyrie down to look for your phone but it stops ringing before you can begin searching. you wait for it to ring again you find it between the cracks of the couch.
"oh hey mari," you say in confusion. after high school ended, you and maria kind of fell off along with all your other popular friends. you still had that clout all throughout college given who you were dating but you kind of strayed away from her. you guys were still on speaking terms though but this call was odd since it had been months since the last time she called.
"GIRL-" she pauses for a moment, still as dramatic as ever. "what it is mari? val won't stop crying she needs attention," you sigh, looking over at your daughter. her cries had gotten softer but she was still grumpy about not being with her father.
"girl turn on your tv to MTV right now- like right now before you miss it!" she says hurriedly. "this better be good you know i dont watch those shows," you say into the phone. you place the phone between your ear and shoulder so you can hold valkyrie while watching whatever it was that maria wanted you to watch.
then you see it. "is that-?" you begin. "CHOI beomgyu! yes girl!" maria finishes your sentence. she's right. there he is, the boy you were just thinking about was on your tv screen. "he's famous?" you ask.
maria sucks her teeth, "apparently after high school and like a year or two of college, he dropped out to pursue a music career and i guess it worked out for him." you nod even though she can't see you. "he signed with a label and now he's in like some super fucking famous band, look at him," she continues.
you stare at your tv screen in silence, watching beomgyu have the time of his life on the MTV stage. he really did get good on his guitar. the camera pans to the drummer and your eyes go wide when you see jeongin. wow, they really stayed together this whole time.
"he's fine as hell," you admit. you hear maria cackle on the other side, "you said it, he looks so attractive playing guitar like that, look at his fingers."
"ok alright maria, i have a child right next to me," you say. she laughs again, "anyways, i got tickets to their next show. you wanna come with?"
you're not sure how you managed to convince yeonjun to stay home with the baby while you went out with maria to this concert, but you did it. he was skeptical of letting you go out with what you were wearing which is why you both argued before you eventually stormed out to go anyways.
when you met up with maria outside the venue she looked up and down with a knowing smile. "i thought that pussy belonged to mr. choi yeonjun? what're you all dressed up for?"
"dressed up?" all you were wearing was a black and white bandana for a top and tight leather pants and comfortable shoes. "do the pants really have to hug your ass like that though?" she jokingly slaps your butt and you glare at her. "that's what yeonjun said," you mumble to yourself.
the concert goes smoothly and you're glad you actually got to see beomgyu in person and playing guitar. one thing about choi beomgyu is that he will play guitar like it's his last day on earth. he plays with so much intensity that you almost feel bad for the guitar.
you could almost feel how the crowd's energy in this packed room transferred to the members. if it was even possible, they started to play with more vigor.
at some point, beomgyu was full on immersed in his own playing. his once fluffy hair was now soaked with sweat and covering his forehead and eyes. he kept headbanging along to the beat while skillfully moving his fingers along the strings of the guitar.
during the middle of one of their songs, beomgyu took the center stage for his guitar solo. it was a fast paced riff that just seemed to give the song more life. his head is down so that it's solely focused on the guitar but once he finished the hardest part of the riff he looked up smugly. the crowd went absolutely mad when beomgyu bit his lip during the rest of his solo.
you had to admit the boy had stage presence, you practically almost re-fell in love with him.
after the show, you and maria went to get refreshments at the nearby bar. beomgyu seemed to already be there talking to one of his members so you took this opportunity to speak with him. you wonder if he'll remember you after all these years but you take your chances.
"beomgyu!" you shout over the music that's playing in the background. he whips his head around to the sound of his name being called and smiles lightly when he sees you. when you get to him, he subtly looks you up and down, taking in your body and attire. "y/n is that you?" he says, his voice laced with something teasing.
"you remember me?" you ask him with a smile. "how could i forget a face like yours," he smiles, leaning back. you laugh and he smiles. "i just saw you on stage, i never thought you'd become this huge! congrats!"
he nods, "yeah, i always wanted to make it big you know." he trails off, looking over you again like he's entranced somehow. "so how's life? you still with-"
"yeonjun...yeah we um- we have a kid...now," you finish nervously. did he really have to bring yeonjun up right now. "a kid?" he says, surprised. "let me see."
you show him a selfie of you and valkyrie that you took at a time when she wasn't completely hating your existence and wanting to cuddle her father instead of you. he laughs and leans back once again, "she's cute like you, she definitely got her mom's features."
"yeah and she's got her dad's attitude," you say, mostly to yourself but beomgyu catches it. "oh yeah! i wanted to say, i really like that one song you played, uh- fairy?"
"fairy of shampoo? yeah we added our own little rock twist to it," he says. "you know the lyrics are actually about y-" your phone cuts him off and you apologize, turning away to answer it. "what is it yeonjun"
beomgyu sighs in frustration when he hears you say that. when you finish talking you turn back to him and he has his eyebrow raised in question. "looks like my fun is over," you laugh dryly. he nods in understanding, "before you go though, let me get your number so we can catch up sometime."
you agree, not wanting to pass up the chance to reconnect with your now famous friend.
"maybe we'll see each other around gyu," you smile, beginning to walk away.
he smiles at the old nickname, waving you off, "i sure hope so."

i havent used this blog in a billion years and i dont even use tumblr anymore but god i just needed to spill my thoughts SOMEWHERE
im just about to finish my undergrad in linguistics, i applied to 6 linguistics phd programs in december, all at prestigious institutions bc my life goal is to become a field linguist. i want to work with endangered languages, i want to do original field work, i want to explore the world, i want to discover something new
its only week 2 of admission decisions and ive already been rejected by 3 out of the 6, one of which i got interviewed for by two profs from the department and actually felt like i had an actual chance at getting into... the remaining 3 I don't expect to get accepted to, bc they're some of the top linguistics programs in the world
i just feel so embarrassed,,,, ive been hyping up the fact that i was applying to grad school to everyone ive met, everyone i know, every family member, and now i dont even know if a single university will accept me :/ i know no one will be disappointed in me but i can't help but feel like im letting down everyone, the profs that wrote me reference letters, my parents who have put up with me transferring out of a science program to pursue linguistics, my friends who have been there for me throughout this whole process, and most of all myself ?? i feel like all the work ive put into carefully planning out my degree, meticulously seeking out research opportunities, writing research papers, making connections with professors, presenting at conferences, everything just feels really futile rn? i need this degree to reach my life dream and im so frustrated that the only thing stopping me was ,,,,my own application,,,
i still have yet to hear back from the other three schools but im going to go in expecting a rejection, and hopefully in a stroke of luck, ill be pleasantly surprised.

The Last Time I Dated A Friend’s Brother
Growing up, I had this best friend named Haley, and I spent a lot of time at her house. Haley, Sarah, and I were like the three amigos. We did everything together. I smoked weed for the first time in a tent in her backyard. She had an older sister who was away at college, and a little brother who always seemed to be around. It was like this kid had no friends, he was always bothering us. He was super annoying, and I vividly remember actually punching him one time because he wouldn’t leave us alone. I heard a few years after high school he had been dating a mutual friend, Amelia, and that they had a baby together. I was happy for them, and that was probably the only time I ever thought about him as an adult.
After my breakup with John, I decided to get on Tinder. I was having a hard time getting over him, and the idea of getting into a new relationship was not even on my radar. Instead, I was pursuing a casual dating situation. This was my first foray with this dating app and I met a few fun guys, and had some good dates, but nothing serious. I was traveling for work one week, and it occurred to me that Tinder matched based on location. So, while I was in North Carolina, I deleted the app to avoid matching with someone great that would be too far away. On the way back, sitting in the back of my coworker’s car while everyone was sleeping, I was bored so I downloaded the app, to check my messages, and started to swipe again as we got closer to home.
I saw a very familiar face, so I swiped right to dig a little deeper. Immediately, I got a match notification. I cracked up when I realized he was Haley‘s little brother, Matt. When we were kids he seemed so much younger than us, but in truth it was only four years age difference. But he had grown up a lot and got pretty cute over the years. He messaged me first, “If you promise not to hit me again, I would love to see you!” I responded with about four lines of HAHAHA, followed by “holy shit, how are you?” We chatted for a couple days and found that we had a lot more in common than we ever knew before. We were quickly bonded, and our conversations turned a little flirty. Eventually, we decided to hang out, and he came to my apartment with his son.
Now, I know that seems weird, and even now writing it if feels weird because… can you imagine meeting somebody’s kid on the first date? But I’ve known this guy like my whole life I just felt like he was a longtime friend introducing me to his kid! We hung out and played cars on my living room floor, while Matt and I caught up. His son was funny, adorable, and bad! Like, Dennis the Menace bad. Matt told me a little bit about his relationship with his ex, Amelia. It sounded a little difficult, but I had no idea how toxic it really was. In the beginning, I didn’t even weigh this into my decision to date Matt.
My bigger concern was Haley. We hadn’t spoken for years. The summer after Senior Year, I got the opportunity to travel abroad with some fellow students. This was a very eye-opening experience, and I was exposed to a lot of things in Europe that I hadn’t encountered in the US. When I got home, I told Haley that I kissed a girl. I hadn’t really worked through my feelings about it, but it wasn’t any kind of declaration of sexual identity… it was just confiding in a friend that I had a new experience. Haley told our friend Sarah that I was a lesbian. Sarah worked with my sister, and told her… and then my sister told my mom. So, here I thought I was just sharing a secret with a friend, and I ended up having to explain to my mom that I wasn’t lesbian. The truth is, I don’t know what I am, even now at almost 36 years old I don’t know. I have never had nor pursued a romantic relationship with a woman, but I’ve definitely been attracted to them. I don’t know if that needs defining either, because I don’t believe that sexuality is binary. Anyway... what I didn’t know, was that she didn’t think that was a big deal. She hadn’t spoken to me because I didn’t invite her to my very small wedding. I barely invited any friends, it was mostly family there. We had approximately 50 guests, there was one friend from high school (who knew my husband well) and a handful of friends from work (who were also friends with Joe). I hadn’t spent any amount of time with Haley since she told my secret.
But, Matt assured me that Haley still loved me and his family would accept me with open arms, and he was totally right. Being with his family again was like being in high school. But I dont want to mislead you, Haley and I didn’t pick up where we left off. She had new best friends, and so did I. But it was still cool, and we were cool. Once I had his family’s blessing, it didn’t take long for us to start dating, and for me to start coparenting his child. His ex-girlfriend, Amelia was a former friend of mine, but now treated me like I was a stranger. I don’t know with what went on in her life in the 10 years since we last hung out, but she was not the most mentally stable person. It affected the kid and deeply affected Matt.
He was very much a pacifist and never stood up for himself in their relationship. His vain attempts at trying to coparent were constantly thwarted by her miserable attitude and unreasonable, aggressive communication style. She had a horrible time keeping a job, and it seemed like our custody schedule would change as frequently as week to week. I encouraged Matt to get an official custody agreement with the courts, but he was honestly afraid of her taking the kid away from him completely, so he would lay down to her demands all the time. It was infinitely frustrating to stand by and watch her make him feel like less of a man. And honestly, sometimes it made me see him as less of a man, too.
I tried to create some stability at home by moving us in together. I bought a house out of necessity, because a 2-or-3 bedroom apartment would cost much more than buying a home in Northern Virginia. Our first couple months in the house were met with tons of problems. We moved in at the end of December. By the time we got everything unpacked and settled, we discovered bed bugs. It was hard to discern whether they had been transferred from the moving van, or the house Matt lived in before, or if they had always been in the house I purchased. Ultimately the source didn’t matter as much as the remediation, so we asked Amelia to help us out and take her son when it wasn’t “her week”. She completely blew the situation out of proportion and called CPS on us for endangering their son, when we were really trying to protect him. We had pets we had to move to his sister’s house, and we slept in her basement while our house was being treated. If you’ve never had bedbugs, let me explain what a complete mindfuck they are. I was not getting bitten, Matt was. Every morning he would wake up with welts all over his body that he couldn’t explain. But we worked different schedules, so we weren’t waking up together to see if we both had welts. He didn’t tell me about them until the third morning, asking if I also was experiencing this. That’s when we discovered the little splatters of blood on our mattress and walls from the bugs after they bit Matt. Even after the bedbug dog sniffed our entire home and the bug company assured us we were safe, we felt like victims in our own home. Every tiny tickle on our skin would send us reeling. It was psychological warfare.
Once we safely moved his son back into the house, I decorated his room first. We painted the walls, we made him a little toy/art workstation, and hung a huge light-up Bumble Bee, his favorite transformer, on the wall above his bed. Matt invited Amelia to come see our house when we were all settled. It wasn’t breaktakingly beautiful, like some of the homes I’ve designed in my career. It’s kind of like the housekeeper who doesn’t clean her own house, our house was cozy and humble. But we were proud of what we built together. This was the one and only time we had a amicable meeting with Amelia, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. She brought her son to us for our custody week, and walked him inside. We showed her around the main floor, and the kid noticed some candy on the kitchen counter. He asked me for some, and I said no, and he threw himself into a rage fit. He was jumping up and down, stomping his feet, screaming about wanting that candy. I stood back and waited for either Matt or Amelia to react. And they both just stood there staring at him in horror, like most people stare at other people’s kids when they are having a tantrum in public. I got down on one knee, at his eye level, and said “it’s not time for candy bud. It’s time for bed. We can have candy tomorrow. Ok? Now why don’t you go show your mom your new bedroom?”
His tears dried, and his face lit up. He turned, grabbed his mom’s hand and ran toward the stairs. I heard Amelia say, on her way up the stairs “you are so lucky you have three parents.” And I looked at Matt and said “he has one parent. It’s me.”
Now any parents reading this might be pissed at that statement, but trust me when I say, I believed it was true. I was the only one parenting him. When he was with his mom, there were no rules and no boundaries. And Matt had the typical single dad attitude of never wanting to be the bad guy, so he also had very few rules. But when he was with me, there were rules. We sat at the dinner table to eat. We used our forks and spoons. We didn’t act like a fucking lunatic in public, and we said please and thank you. It was like trying to train a puppy, because he was constantly unlearning these behaviors with his parents. I was the only one who cared about him being a decent human being some day. Fuck me, right?
This is the part where I’m too mad to finish the story today. To be continued.

How one can Run Advertising and marketing Group Conferences That Do not Suck

How one can Run Advertising and marketing Group Conferences That Do not Suck
Conferences suck. They’re time for folks to keep away from doing precise work, stare blankly at one another, throw in generic feedback to seem like they’re paying consideration, and for those who’re fortunate, perhaps come out with some depraved pocket book doodles.
Is that how folks understand your marketing conferences? I hope not, as a result of they do not truly must be that approach.
Flip your marketing conferences into one thing helpful by — you guessed it — creating compelling content! (Oh my gosh, inbound marketing ideas work in actual life, too!)
As your workforce grows, it is vital for everybody to get in a room collectively and discuss what they have been engaged on of their nook of the world. So to make sure these marketing conferences aren’t blocks of time your workforce dreads, make notice of the following tips for methods to make marketing workforce conferences really helpful to your staff.
How one can Run an Efficient Assembly
Whereas this put up will primarily give attention to marketing conferences, I wish to deal with a team-agnostic part about efficient conferences as an entire.
As I stated above, conferences could be a grandiose waste of time. It is tempting to run your work by others, collect suggestions or affirmation, or just keep away from the robust stuff by calling conferences.
I am right here to let you know — do not do it. Step one to working efficient conferences is to solely schedule conferences when completely needed.
Quarterly conferences to report on firm progress and vital information? After all. Month-to-month conferences to the touch base on KPIs and recruit assist for tasks? Sounds nice. Weekly conferences to report on present obligations and asks? I am torn on whether or not this one is important, however for big groups or groups with new staff, this might be a great transfer.
Each second in a gathering is time away from heads-down work, the work that arguably strikes your corporation ahead. Are conferences essential to take a break, contact base, and rally along with your workforce? After all.
Secondly, to know the effectiveness and effectivity of a gathering, ask your workforce. Ask, “is [meeting] helpful for you? If so, what are its top two benefits for you?” This will help you perceive what proportion of your groups finds worth in your conferences and what parts or agenda objects might be able to be eliminated to save lots of time.
Talking of agendas, let’s talk about subsequent what your marketing assembly agendas ought to resemble.
Advertising and marketing Assembly Agenda
Whether or not your marketing workforce assembly is weekly month-to-month, this part will clarify the content material it’s best to each single time. We additionally advocate making a slide deck that you simply undertaking to your workforce in every assembly so you’ll be able to all comply with together with every agenda merchandise.
Advertising and marketing Assembly Agenda Instance
For each assembly, it’s best to have a devoted agenda slide that lays out three issues:
What might be mentioned in at this time’s assembly
Who might be main every dialogue
How a lot time is allotted for every dialogue
Check out one in every of our current marketing workforce assembly agenda slides:
Outlining who’s speaking, what they’re protecting, and the way a lot time they’ve to debate it can assist forestall the assembly from getting derailed. It’ll additionally forestall folks from delving into unproductive conversations which are finest had at one other time and place.
As for what parts needs to be in your marketing assembly agenda, let’s talk about what to cowl throughout your marketing assembly.
Overview Vital Metrics
Do a fast assessment of your most vital marketing metrics. These should not be area of interest metrics, like electronic mail unsubscribe fee, social media attain, or weblog subscriber development; save these to your month-to-month conferences the place you assessment month-over-month progress.
These needs to be the metrics your marketing workforce is measured on. In different phrases, on the finish of the month, what metrics will let you know whether or not the marketing workforce succeeded?
Whereas each enterprise will probably assessment one thing totally different relying on their enterprise mannequin, listed below are some concepts for you:
It is vital to assessment your workforce’s vital metrics as a result of these are the way you’re measured onas an total marketing workforce. And for those who do not all understand how you are faring because the month progresses, particular person contributors cannot do something to step up and assist your workforce’s numbers enhance.
A Little bit of Training
Advertising and marketing conferences needs to be a wholesome mixture of state-of-the-union content material and academic content material. Every week, have a pair workforce members current briefly about fascinating tasks they have been engaged on. This serves two functions: it lets folks know what their workforce members do all day, they usually get to study one thing new!
Give it some thought … would not it’s fascinating for a blogger to study a little bit bit a few PPC experiment? Or for a social media intern to study in regards to the outcomes of the most recent electronic mail A/B test?
Sharing lessons from projects helps everyone expand their knowledge base, sidestep landmines if a project backfired, and implement effective new techniques that they never knew worked.
Boom — everyone leaves your weekly meeting a smarter, better marketer!
The Nitty Gritty Retrospective
Your meeting should also contain a review of the projects each employee (or if you’re a larger marketing department, each team) worked on last month/quarter/year, plus the results they’ve seen.
This is good for a few reasons. First, it keeps everyone accountable knowing that each meeting they need to stand up in front of their colleagues and explain just what they do all day. Second, everyone gets to learn from what everyone else worked on and become generally better marketers. Third, it helps everyone identify how individual teams are faring, and what projects they’re doing to improve their own metrics.
For example, if you have a social media team, this is their opportunity to report on the success of every single social network they manage. How is their reach faring? How much traffic are those networks sending to your site? How many leads are being generated? Why are some networks more successful than others?
While your weekly meetings (if you have them) may focus on more high-level, team-based metrics, a monthly or quarterly meeting is a good opportunity to do a deep dive into the channels and metrics that enable the entire team to meet its goals.
How You’ll Meet This Month’s Goals
After the retrospective, each employee or team should also present on their individual goals for the month or quarter, and how exactly they will meet those goals. This is not the time to be generic.
Teams should explain, point by point, everything they’ll be doing during the time period to meet the metrics they’re measured by.
For example, let’s say the email marketing team is responsible for driving more reconversions this month. What exactly will they do to, well, do that? Well, that slide might have some initiatives like A/B test email copy with and without a P.S., anoffers analysis to determine which offers convert at the highest rate, list segmentation experiments, tailoring lead generation offers to align more closely with personas to improve CTR … the list could, and should, go on.
This is also a critical time in your meeting for feedback. Build in time during every presentation — at least 5 minutes, more if you find you need it after a few meetings — for each team to solicit feedback on their proposed projects. This will help individual teams from getting derailed on projects that might not help them meet their goals, or perhaps other members of the marketing team have fantastic ideas that the teams hadn’t even thought of yet!
Big Wins
A little bit of recognition is a good thing. Set aside a couple of minutes — come on, you can’t find 5 minutes? — to showcase some of the amazing things your team members or department as a whole have accomplished.
This could be anything from press coverage, speaking engagements, engaging with power players on social media, a smash hit blog post, an email that received unprecedented click-through rates … you get the point. It’s easy to harp on where you’re falling behind, but a little cheerleading can help rally your team and remind them just how successful they can be when they put their mind to it.
Solicit Help
Everyone should have the opportunity to solicit help from team members during your marketing team meetings. The larger your team gets, the easier it is to work in silos — but everyone has their own little super powers that sometimes go unnoticed.
If there is a platform during every meeting for employees to share (if they need it) something they need a little help with, you may find others pipe up with a simple solution or resource that solves the problem.
There should also be a few minutes built into each presentation for a little feedback. If someone is presenting on the progress of an ongoing project, part of “soliciting help” may be getting feedback on what steps to take next. For example:
Is this project still worth pursuing?
How should we measure the success of this project?
Does anyone have a solution to a major roadblock?
So while there should be a few minutes at the end of each meeting dedicated solely to giving employees the floor to solicit help, time for feedback should be built into presentations if the presenter needs it.
6 Tips for a Productive Marketing Meeting
Stay on time.
Don’t allow computers.
Build in time for a break.
End every meeting with action items.
Consider your remote folks.
Review metrics and celebrate wins.
You know what content to include in your marketing team meetings. Now, let’s discuss how to make those meetings run smoothly. These tips, despite helpful content, can make or break the usefulness of any marketing meeting.
1. Stay on time.
Start on time, you end on time, and honor the budgeted time set for individual presentations. I know it’s hard, especially when there’s a good discussion going on, but delegate a timekeeper who lets presenters know when they’re coming up to the end of their allotted time.
If you’re vigilant about this, people will start to self-edit their presentation, and meeting-goers will self-censor their comments, only contributing what truly needs to be said.
2. Don’t allow computers …
… said the internet marketing company. Seriously though, only the meeting coordinator should have a computer to pull up the agenda and presentations.
If others bring their laptops, you’ll find people can’t help but check their emails, get little bits of work done, and chat online, no matter how riveting the presentations are.
3. Build in time for a break.
Your weekly meeting may only be 30 or 60 minutes, but your monthly meeting could take a lot longer. In that case, build in time for people to get up, stretch their legs, go to the bathroom, get coffee, whatever.
You’ll start losing people’s attention otherwise.
4. End every meeting with action items.
Whatever you talked about during your meeting should be revisited briefly at the end of the meeting, preferably by the meeting coordinator. If you spend 20 minutes talking about how to solve your lead shortage problem at the beginning of your 90-minute meeting, there’s a good chance some of the to-dos and initiatives trickled out of people’s minds.
Make sure there’s someone taking notes throughout the meeting, and allot five minutes at the end of every meeting to review what people should start doing once they walk out of that meeting room.
5. Consider your remote folks.
Whether your entire team or just a few members are remote, it’s important to consider the remote meeting experience. As a remote worker myself, dialing into meetings as one of the few remote attendees takes a bit to get used to.
Research helpful technology to mitigate the gap between in-office and remote workers. Zoom is clearly an ideal selection, however different know-how like The Meeting Owl by Owl Labs could also be a great match to your workforce. At the beginning of every assembly, take a look at your connectivity and stroll by your slides to make certain the message is evident for people at dwelling.
Supply: Getty Pictures
Most significantly, collect separate suggestions out of your distant workforce members to know their struggles and accommodate their requests.
6. Overview metrics and rejoice wins.
You already know these marketing metrics you determined to measure and assessment within the first part? Those that famous your workforce’s progress all through the month?
Now’s the time to see whether or not you hit your targets or not! When you hit your targets, do two issues: rejoice, and clarify precisely why you hit these targets. That second one is crucial. Somebody ought to clarify what marketing actions strongly contributed to you hitting, say, your leads aim. That approach you’ll be able to repeat these actions this month!
Conferences Do not Must Suck
Conferences are a needed a part of work. They seem to be a time to rejoice wins, ask for suggestions or assist, and get aligned along with your workforce and firm.
Sit down along with your colleagues to audit your assembly schedule and see the place you’ll be able to trim time or minimize conferences altogether. Efficient and environment friendly conferences are way more vital than conferences for the sake of it. Your workforce will thanks.

Recently, I've really started resenting my decision to come here instead of Harvard. There's a lot of things I keep thinking about, and I can't seem to reconcile a single, straightforward advantage Princeton has over Harvard. The main things are 1) Workload - the classes here are just harder, and you end up with a worse grade to show for it. It just seem undeniable that we're likely disadvantaged by lower GPAs for recruiting/grad school, and AT BEST, the recruiter/admission people understand the
the GPA difference, so we’re not ridiculously disadvantaged. But in terms of workload, still doesn’t change the fact that my one COS217 assignment is more homework than a weeks worth of total coursework for all but the hardest majors there. They’re out having fun in Boston or chilling with friends while I’m consistently stressed purely from academic workload. 2) Extracurriculars - it seems like there’s so much more stuff to do on campus over there, and the EC scene at Princeton doesn’t really seems to be so much more that they have on campus (from what I hear from friends). There seems such easy access to resume bloat, and they have the free-time to actually pursue it as well. Overall here, it just feels like I’m working harder, have less time to relax, and am on track to less successful than i would’ve been at H and it’s miserable to think about. Sorry that this felt like a rant but I just wanted to get these thoughts off my chest.
Response from Regina:
if the only reason you came here was so that you could be more successful than the people at harvard then i have some news for youu! your success is dependent on how hard you work. yes, harvard is easier than here. im not sure about what harvard has that we dont in terms of extracurriculars but if we dont have it apply for funding and make it happen! yes princeton is incredibly hard and harder than harvard but life can be unfair and people might not know that its harder here but you dont need to have all of your successes be noticed by others. if you’re unhappy here for other reasons (or even these reasons) thats perfectly valid as we cannot say your feelings are invalid but you should figure out a way to be happier! if that means transferring, or switching majors, or creating new clubs on campus, you should do that! but dont have yourself a pity party because if you do that, you are correct that you wont be as successful as your friends from harvard. if you truly hate spending that much time on your 217 assignment then you probably shouldnt be a cos major if you dont enjoy it. pick yourself up and remind yourself that you’re at the BEST UNIVERSITY IN THE COUNTRY and decide on what you can do to fix the way that you are feeling! we want the best for you op and hope that your rant helped you feel better but you gotta put those complaints into action or else you wont be making yourself feel any better. hope this helped and good luck on finishing othello and your finals!!
Response from Sushi:
^great response Regina (edit: and also Sulpicia)
Response from Sulpicia:
Got ninja’d but I had a rant as well:
We get A LOT of questions like this, and the short answer is that I’m sorry that you think the grass is greener, but there’s nothing you can do about the decision you made in the past. If you want to go to Harvard for grad school great, but otherwise that’s kind of all you can do.
Quite frankly, I don’t think Harvard is in general better than Princeton. My overall philosophy is that different schools are better for different people with different goals, and while Harvard has things Princeton lacks, Princeton has things Harvard lacks. I’m not going to make a T chart or anything, but Princeton has the highest per undergrad spending IN THE WORLD and there are many many advantages that you get here that I’m sure you’re taking for granted because they’re easy to.
Additionally, we get so many ridiculous questions about how Harvard is “so much easier” because their average GPA is higher. It is 0.2 points higher. That is not that much; it’s genuinely like a third of a letter grade higher, and both averages are pretty high. Honestly, if you think that your whole career is going to be derailed because you got one more A- than you think you /might/ have gotten at another school, what are you doing? Your college career does not and should not dictate your entire life and career trajectory, and people thinking that they absolutely must have the best GPA and the best entry-level jobs are not being realistic. Yes, those jobs are great and yes, they will pay well but you are at a school with an ENORMOUS alumni network that will only get richer as your classmates and friends build their own careers. Creativity and hard work are attributes that are prized in the workplace, not the highest GPA (check out the NYT article that came out recently about being a B student).
I don’t think we’re disadvantaged in grad school or recruiting because of GPA. Maybe computer science students don’t get recruited as much as they do from Stanford or a place that is known for CS, but the opportunities we get are ones people at other schools would KILL for. This year we had three Rhodes Scholars, the most from any one school (tied with Yale). We had two Marshall Scholars. People go to top law/med schools every year. Yes, it’s because truly impressive students come here, but it’s insane to me that we have 1-3 Rhodes Scholars EVERY YEAR when many state schools or smaller private colleges would be lucky to have had one or two ever. We get these chances because of the Princeton name, because of the classes/paid internships/fellowships/research trips that give people good resume fodder and essay topics, and because of the coaching we get. If you’re not getting jobs, go to Career Services to the office full of people who are paid to get you a job. I’m sorry that the Fall COS 217 assignment is shit, but that’s life and you’re not the first person to be stuck doing it all break. I highly doubt that everyone at Harvard is “chilling in Boston” and I’m sure most are just as stressed, strung-out, and afraid of failure as you are, if not more so because there’s more pressure to have a perfect GPA.
Like Regina said, I don’t know what’s going on a Harvard (and not the city of Boston) that we don’t have, but there are over 300 groups here and new ones start all the time so I don’t know what you want. Nobody is going to spoon-feed you the life you want, and all this “X university is easier” bullshit is petty and not constructive and honestly just rude. Princeton is lacking in a lot of things but if you’re not getting academic, career, or extracurricular support that you need, then there are resources you can find very clearly on campus.

Attention, Teachers: Need Cash This Summer? Try One of These 26 Side Gigs
While many of us dream of having the summer months off, some teachers prefer to use their vacations to earn extra cash.
According to a Penny Hoarder analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, the median salary for teachers (elementary, middle and secondary) is $51,000, and the starting salary comes in at $35,800. So it’s no surprise that one in 10 educators works a second job during the summer. Not only that, teachers are twice as likely to work a second job than people in any other occupation.
Working during the summer can help you keep your teaching skills sharp and can even help you learn a few new things — preferably with someone else footing the bill.
You’ll find no shortage of summer jobs for teachers or educators. Many of these opportunities will give you a modest income without a lengthy commitment. When the summer’s over, you can resume your day job without having to worry about quitting or keeping a second job.
Ready to find your new summer job?
Jobs That Will Keep You Teaching
For some teachers, summer is a time to get away from their regular day-to-day work. But for others, teaching is what gets them going in the morning. These jobs will bring in extra income while fulfilling that desire to keep teaching.
1. Teach English as a Second Language
Want to strengthen your teaching skills while earning extra money? Look for opportunities to tutor English as a second language (ESL) students locally and online.
You can contact large corporations in your area that may relocate foreign employees to your city and inquire whether they need a freelance ESL tutor to help their staff brush up on their language skills. Or go online and connect with students all over the world through sites like GoFluent and QKids. One former public school teacher earned over $500 a week teaching English to Chinese students through VIPKID.
2. Offer Tutoring
School may be out for the summer for you, but that doesn’t mean students don’t still need a helping hand. If you just don’t get enough of teaching during the school year, tutor in your subject to make extra cash.
If you want to offer in-person tutoring, start by spreading the word with your students’ parents during the school year so they know who to call when summertime rolls around. And of course, shamelessly publicize your tutoring skills to friends and family who have children. A great thing about tutoring is you can set your own rates, with tutors typically charging anywhere between $30 and $90 per hour, depending on the subject, according to Tutors.com.
And if you’d like to tutor without actually having to leave your house, consider online tutoring instead. There are a ton of websites that hire online tutors. Here are some of our favorite online tutoring companies.
3. Become a Test Prep Instructor
This is similar to tutoring, but with a little twist. As a test prep instructor, you can still flex those teaching skills but take a little break from teaching the same stuff you do during the regular school year.
Depending on your area of expertise and skill level, you can earn income over the summer helping students prepare for the ACT, SAT, LSAT, MCAT or GRE.
Again, you can simply spread the word through friends and family to tutor locally, which means you can set your own rates. Or you can turn to a national organization that is regularly hiring, such as Kaplan Test Prep, where tutors earn anywhere from $17 to $28 per hour, according to Glassdoor salaries.
4. Teach Abroad
Why limit your summer job search to the U.S.? You’ll find many great opportunities for teachers to work abroad during the summer months.
While paid short-term positions can be hard to come by, volunteer programs, especially those teaching English, are plentiful in certain regions of the world — plus, you’ll get to travel. Some programs will even pay for your expenses. Go Overseas lists a ton of volunteer teaching opportunities abroad.
5. Coach Youth Sports
Coaching youth sports during the summer is another opportunity that allows you to continue working with and instructing children — just in a different way from your regular job. Sure, it’s not teaching long division, but spending the summer imparting athletic and teamwork skills to children can be just as challenging and rewarding.
Plus, you get to watch kids run around playing sports, which is always adorable. A 6-year-old in an oversized, bobbling baseball helmet? Forget about it.
Check with your community recreation centers, churches and camps to find open jobs.
6. Work as a Nanny or Baby Sitter
Technically, this isn’t a teaching gig, but as a nanny or baby sitter you’ll still be working with children and informally teaching them along the way.
You can either find a regular full-time nanny job working for parents who prefer that to traditional day care or just pick up baby-sitting gigs here and there when you feel like making some extra cash.
Start by spreading the word through friends and family, and be sure to mention your teaching position so you have an edge over teenagers willing to do the job cheaply. You can also check out sites like Sittercity to find jobs in your community.
Online Summer Jobs for Teachers
Looking for a summer gig that earns you some extra cash — but doesn’t require leaving the house? We’ve got you covered.
7. Sell Your Lesson Plans Online
I love opportunities to leverage what you already have for passive income. You’ve already done the work. Why not make the most of it?
Take those lesson plans and worksheets you created during the school year and upload them to a site like Teachers Pay Teachers. You will earn 60% to 85% on each sale of your education resources. And this is an opportunity that can continue to bring in additional income year-round without any extra work.
“I only sell digital products, so I don’t have to mail anything,” Meredith O’Neill, a middle school teacher who sells her resources on the site, told us in May 2017. “The sale and the transfer of my work happens automatically. The payment goes straight to my PayPal account after TPT takes its cut. It’s extremely easy once your store is created and your work is loaded.”
8. Write and Edit Resumes
If you’ve got writing skills, you can earn extra cash writing and editing resumes. For some (read: a lot) of us, crafting a resume is like pulling teeth, and people are willing to fork out funds for a final product they feel will help them land a job.
This is a good summer job to pursue if you’re interested in part-time work that you can pick up on your own time.
Your personal network is a good place to start, and your teaching background will give you an edge. You can also list your services on freelance platforms such as Upwork, Thumbtack and Fiverr.
Fiverr user Charmaine Pocek started writing resumes and cover letters for $5 a piece. Within six years, she was charging $30 to $800 for her services and has since earned over $2 million through the site, according to Fiverr.
If you’re interested but need a little refresher on resume writing, check out this step-by-step guide.
9. Work as a Website Tester
You probably already spend a good amount of time browsing the internet and using phone apps, so why not get paid for it? Companies want to know how users interact with their websites and what can be done to make them more user-friendly.
All you have to do is browse and navigate websites and then provide honest feedback. You won’t get rich testing websites — expect to earn between $5 and $10 for each test.
UserTesting pays $10 for every 20 minute test; UserFeel pays $10 for every 10-20 minute test; and User Test pays around $10 per review.
10. Look Into Work-From-Home Jobs
You spend the school year commuting, so consider spending the summer earning extra income from the comfort of your own home. You’d be amazed how many companies are regularly hiring work-from-home employees, and with such a broad selection you can find an opportunity that fits your skill set.
Customer service, copy editing, travel consulting, coding, part-time, full-time, seasonal, freelance: Honestly, the internet is your oyster. You can start with with our Work-From-Home jobs portal to find a gig.
And if you’ve never forayed into the remote work life before, take some time to go over our work-from-home guide. It covers topics such as insurance, scams, taxes and how to find a job that fits your lifestyle.
Summer Jobs in the Great Outdoors
It’s summertime and you probably spend the rest of year cooped up in a classroom. Why not spend your months off in the great outdoors and earning extra cash at the same time?
11. Camp Counselor
If you love fresh air and sunshine, consider getting a job at a summer camp.
Writer Amanda Simkin spent three summers working at a summer camp during her eight years of teaching. “Working at a summer camp is a great supplemental job because sometimes you just want to get away from the classroom and interact with kids in a more fun-focused and laid-back way,” she explains.
Here’s how she recommends you find a job. “I learned about openings through word of mouth, but nowadays you can use social media, such as park district websites, Facebook, even Craigslist to find openings,” she says. You can also check with your local YMCA, community organizations and churches.
12. Local Tour Guide
Know all of the hot spots and hidden gems in your city or neighborhood? Then consider becoming a local tour guide. It’s a great way to enjoy the weather, the scenery and good company (hopefully) while earning extra cash.
Another neighborhood-based gig that’s similar to becoming a tour guide is Yelp’s community ambassador program. The company hires people in each city to host events, partner with local organizations and act as an online moderator. It’s a flexible gig, usually 15 to 20 hours per week.
13. Whitewater Raft Guide
This is the perfect job if you want to work in the great outdoors but you’re also looking for an adventure. But be warned: The job is intense and physically-demanding. It also requires long hours and certain qualifications, depending on your state.
Hiring for river guides really amps up around June and July, and recreational hiring in general grows an average of 68% in the U.S. around this time, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The river-rafting season typically runs from June to September, making this a perfectly complementary job for teachers looking to earn a summer income. In fact, Idaho river guide Hardy Bender says a lot of guides seek out teaching jobs purely so they can have the summers off to hit the river.
14. Lifeguard
Like river guiding, this summer job for teachers gives you the perks of getting paid to enjoy the water and sunshine but in a more controlled environment.
Summer is the busy season, so check with city-operated pools, recreation centers, water parks and country clubs for seasonal lifeguarding jobs. Or if you’re blessed enough to live on the water, you can spend the summer working on the beach.
The pay for lifeguards varies depending on your location, skill level and employer, but you can earn anywhere from $9 to $25 per hour, according to Glassdoor salaries. Just remember, there are certain certifications and training to complete before you can get that telltale red suit and whistle.
15. Dog Walker
Honestly, who doesn’t want to get paid to hang out with dogs in their spare time? Well, maybe cat people… but they don’t count.
Start by offering your services to friends and family who don’t have the summers off. They may jump at the chance for someone to take their beloved pups out for a walk on long work days.
You can also sign up for Rover.
The online network connects dog walkers and sitters to local dog owners through its 4.9-star-rated app, so you don’t have to staple flyers on every utility pole across town.
Rover says sitters can earn as much as $1,000 a month.
Rover dog-sitter requirements vary by location. In general, you must:
Be 18 years or older.
Pass a background check.
Have access to the Rover app (iOS or Android).
Here’s how it works: You’ll create an online sitter profile where you’ll answer questions about your experience with puppers and your schedule availability.
You can choose to offer a variety of services, including dog walking, overnight boarding at your home or theirs, and daycare. Boarding is the app’s most popular service, so offering it can get you more gigs. You set your own rates. (Rover keeps a small percentage as a service fee.)
Dog owners will reach out to you. Accept which gigs you want, then start snugglin’ pups. As soon as you complete a service, you’ll be paid within two days.
And if you don’t want to just stick to dog walking, you can expand your services and become a full-blown pet sitter — check this out for more information.
Jobs That Offer a Change of Pace
Maybe you want a summer job that breaks away from the standard tutoring gig. Here are some options all across the board, we’re sure at least one will catch your eye.
16. Drive for Uber or Lyft
If you want to make some extra cash without committing to a full-blown job, driving for Uber or Lyft is a legitimate option. Demand for ride-sharing has been growing like crazy, and it shows no signs of slowing down. To be eligible, you’ll need to be at least 21 years old with a year of driving experience, pass a background check and own a car made in 2007 or later.
We talked to Paul Pruce, who had been driving full-time with Lyft for over a year and earning $750 a week as a driver.
Best of all, he could do it on his own time. You can work days, nights or weekends — it’s up to you.
Because it’s easy to switch between apps, Lyft drivers often also sign up to drive with Uber.
17. Rent Out Your Driveway
No one wants to worry about feeding a meter while on vacation. If you live near an event center or stadium, rent out your driveway using sites and apps like JustPark or MonkeyParking — or go old school and simply post a “Parking” sign in front of your house. You may only earn $20 per day, but $20 is $20.
18. List Extra Space in Your House
Have a spare room? Might as well try to earn some money by listing it on Airbnb.
If you’re a good host with a desirable space, you could add hundreds — even thousands — of dollars to your savings account with Airbnb.
A few simple steps can make the difference between a great experience and a less-than-satisfactory one. We talked to Terence Michael, an Airbnb superhost based in Los Angeles.
Here are some of his tips:
Break out the labelmaker. “I have the entire house loaded with labels,” Michael says. “They look nice; they’re modern. This helps people feel less helpless.”
Be a good host, and stock your place with the toiletries you’d expect at a hotel — toilet paper, soap and towels. Here’s a little hack from Michael: “I order on Amazon and have it delivered when people are there.”
Be kind to your neighbors. “I say, ‘I’m not going to put anyone here who I think won’t be good for you,’” Michael explains. “And I turn a lot of big groups away, especially in Nashville. I don’t want anyone going to the cops or the city.”
(Hosting laws vary from city to city. Please understand the rules and regulations applicable to your city and listing.)
19. Rent Out Your Car
If you put Uber and Airbnb together and mix them up, the result is renting out your car for extra money. You’re earning extra income from your car, but in the passive way you rent out an extra room — you just have to be cool with strangers driving your car around.
One service to start with is Get Around. When signing up, you’ll list your car and its availability —plus, all cars on Getaround include primary insurance during rentals. Another to check out is TravelCar, a service that allows you to rent out your car while you’re on vacation.
20. Host Trivia
Consider yourself a “Jeopardy!” nut? Combine your love for trivia, wealth of teaching knowledge and ability to command a room to become a part-time trivia contest host. After all, coming up with a set up trivia questions isn’t too far off from crafting a quiz for your students.
Check with your local restaurants and bars to see whether they’re in need of a trivia host. Sure, you might find yourself working only one night a week, but it’s a fun way to flex your brain muscles and earn extra money.
This math teacher in Florida told us he earns $125 per week hosting trivia (and he also offers tips on how to do your best Alex Trebek impersonation).
21. Rent Out Baby Gear
Renting out baby supplies — what will they think of next? There seems to be a rental service for just about everything these days, and this one is great for anyone who can get behind earning some extra cash off of that unused baby stuff taking up storage space.
Companies like BabyQuip allow traveling families to rent strollers, car seats, cribs and other baby items instead of lugging around their own gear. So if you have baby equipment you’re not using, you can list it for rental.
Manuela Madrid, a stay-at-home mom in Brandon, Florida works less than 12 hours per month renting out her gear through BabyQuip, and earns between $120 and $180 with each fulfillment. BabyQuip users keep 80% of each reservation fee, but 100% of each delivery fee.
You can sign up for BabyQuip here, or check out these other options: Babies Getaway, goBaby and Traveling Baby Company.
22. Officiate Youth Sports Games
Aside from coaching, another way to get involved in youth sports over the summer is by officiating games. Plus, officiating gives you the involvement in local youth sports without having to offer as much commitment that coaching would demand.
One option is working as a youth baseball umpire, a gig that can earn you upwards of $50 per game, which are usually less than two hours long. Aside from directly reaching out to youth sport programs, you can reach out to your local umpire association to inquire about open positions.
Summer Jobs if You Want Some Me Time
Look, if you want to spend your summer months catching up on some much needed alone time, we definitely don’t blame you. But that doesn’t mean you still can’t earn some extra money along the way.
23. Write Book Reviews
Here’s a dream scenario: Spend your summer months getting paid to stay curled up with a good book. Freelance book reviewing won’t give you J.K Rowling-level finances, but it’s a great way to earn extra cash while doing something you love — and were probably going to do all summer anyway.
How much you can earn will vary depending on the publisher and your skill level, but you can typically look to earn anywhere from $5 to $100 per review. Plus, you’ll probably get the book for free. Score!
Here are some reputable websites and publishers that will actually pay you for book reviews.
24. House Sitter
If your summer months are going to be spent picking up odd jobs and side hustles, house sitting will fit into your schedule quite nicely — and it’s a great opportunity for some alone time.
Whether you’re spending the night in the home or just stopping in for a short while each day to bring in the mail, house sitting is a pretty easy way to put extra pennies in your pocket.
Sure, you can go through friends and family, but the chances of that avenue offering paid gigs is slim. Check out professional sites that can connect you with potential clients in your area, like HouseSitter.com.
25. Transcriptionist
A transcription gig is perfect for teachers who just want to throw on a pair of noise-canceling headphones and block out the world for a bit.
You can typically find transcription jobs in three categories: general, medical and legal. Note that the latter two might require additional training or requirements, but that will depend on the employer.
Most transcription jobs are independent contract work, so you can set your own hours and work when you want. Just note that transcriptionists are usually paid by the audio hour, so the amount you earn in comparison to hours worked will depend on your transcription fee.
26. Deliver Food
We already talked about driving for Uber and Lyft, and this is kind of the same thing… except you don’t actually have to talk to people beyond the “Here’s your food, you’re welcome, bye.”
Working for food delivery services gives you the opportunity to pick up side-gig work when you feel like earning extra cash — while enjoying some me time. Uber Eats offers flexible food-delivery opportunities, as do GrubHub, Instacart and Shipt.

Beyond Course Specific Content Knowledge: Transferable Skills in Screenwriting
I’ve been interested in television and film writing for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent countless hours watching TV (don’t judge, I did go on to earn my PhD in television studies) captivated by the characters, events, settings, and mysteriously fascinating worlds where it seemed almost any problem could be resolved within 30-minutes. That fascination with watching eventually evolved into a desire to write and then teach. In college, I wrote my first feature film (on a typewriter) and since then, I’ve written television scripts, short films, and taught undergraduate screenwriting courses.
When I teach screenwriting courses at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), I like to ask my students what motivated them to enroll in the class. Are they really interested in becoming a writer? Is screenwriting simply a topic that looked like an interesting elective? Student responses are usually mixed. A few students will say they want to pursue a writing career. You know, be the next Aaron Sorkin, Steven Spielberg, or Vince Gilligan. Others are simply intrigued by the idea of learning more about how stories are created and what elements make a good story. Despite their varied motivations, one recurring comment from students is that when they tell their parents or friends that they are taking a screenwriting course, they are asked “why?” Why would you take a screenwriting class unless you intend on becoming a writer? Why are you wasting your time with something that has no “real” value? Why don’t you find a course that will help you get a job?
The answer to these questions is transferable skills. Transferable skills are valuable because they are portable and don’t belong to any particular niche. They can travel between jobs and help students build stronger resumes, thus increasing their chances to find a job. This is especially important for younger graduates who may not have direct work experience, but can demonstrate value to potential employers through their ability to adapt to different challenges.
No matter what initially motivated a student to enroll in a screenwriting course, I like to provide my students with information about the transferable skills they will learn whether they are enrolled in a screenwriting course that offers a more creative approach, like the series of screenwriting workshop courses offered through SNHU’s online English program, or a more business/practical oriented approach like the Screenwriting for Media Arts course offered in SNHU’s online Communication program.
The transferable skills I present in the online classroom are:
Teamwork & Collaboration: The romantic notion of writers locking themselves away in an attic and emerging with a completed magnificent script is not reality. To produce a great script, writers will collaborate with each other, work through ideas, provide support, and positively contribute to the process of writing as a member of a team.
Storytelling: Screenwriting is an art, but there are some fundamental truths to what makes a good story. For example, every story has a beginning, middle, and end (better known as the three-act structure). We don’t include characters in our stories unless they serve a purpose. And, great characters are complex. They have motivations, goals and take action. They give our stories dimension. Learning about these fundamental aspects of stories helps students become better storytellers.
Communication: The act of writing requires the effective use of many different communication skills. Story ideas need to be pitched (public speaking), producers need to be convinced or sold (persuasive communication), stories need to be written (written communication), collaboration needs to occur with other stakeholders (interpersonal communication), the dynamics of workgroups need to be navigated (group communication) and more. Listening and providing feedback are also critical communication skills that help students improve their writing and help others with their writing. We practice all of these skills through workshopping and peer collaboration. These skills are highly sought after by employers because they demonstrate critical thinking skills like the ability to identify and define a problem and then identify and implement solutions.
Time Management: The ability to effectively organize work and create a plan results in increased productivity and helps accomplish more urgent activities first. When writing a screenplay, there are deadlines to meet, processes to follow, and time-consuming thought processes that must take place to achieve the necessary level of detail. The result of poor time management is a rushed or incomplete script. The ability to write a strong script means the writer is likely a skilled manager of time.
Work Ethic: Let’s face it, writing is hard work. It may not be physically demanding, but the mental wrestling, myriad of decisions to be made, amount of information to organize, and the need to learn and adhere to standard industry practices can be overwhelming. Having a completed script is evidence of a student’s ability to overcome those obstacles and get a job done.
Creativity: Beyond having a good idea, being creative includes the ability to develop ideas into a cohesive project. Many people have ideas for what they think will be a great TV show or film, but few are able to learn and navigate the attributes of a strong story while capturing and maintaining the interest of viewers. Creativity demonstrates a student’s ability to master other previously mentioned transferable skills like critical thinking, communication, and teamwork because it’s those skills that are needed to bring ideas to life.
I hope that I’ve demonstrated how a class in screenwriting can provide students with many transferable skills that can be leveraged in personal and professional lives. The good news is that this is not unique to screenwriting courses. I challenge students in all courses to discover the transferable skills they can acquire and hone for multiple purposes. Being able to identify these skills is crucial because being able to discuss transferable skills can open the door to a wide array of new opportunities.

Did you see the left/right coalition letter against the health insurance mandate?
March 19, 2010 Dear Member of Congress: On behalf of our organizations and the millions of people we represent, we strongly encourage you to oppose the individual mandate in the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2009. Our groups and members may disagree on what are the best solutions to our health care problems, but this unprecedented coalition of organizations from across the political spectrum agrees that forcing individuals to buy insurance from private companies under the threat of fines or jail is not the reform we need. The individual mandate is a section of the bill that requires every single American to buy health insurance-whether or not they want it or feel they can afford it-or break the law and face penalties and fines. Consequently, the bill does not actually cover 30 million more Americans-instead it makes them criminals if they do not buy insurance from private companies. We hope you agree that it is unconscionable to force people to buy a product from a private insurer. This would effectively be a tax-and a huge one-paid directly to a private industry. Enacting this mandate would be a major victory for the insurance companies at the expense of the American people. It should be no surprise they support the government forcing everyone to buy their product. Imagine how the hamburger industry would respond if the government forced everyone to have hamburgers for lunch or pay fines? According to the President's Council of Economic Advisers, the average annual premium for single coverage is $4,321. If the 46 million uninsured are forced to purchase private health insurance at that price, then the insurance industry stands to bring in up to $200 billion in new insurance premiums per year. The Senate bill also includes an estimated $630 billion in corporate welfare for private insurance companies in the form of subsidies over the next 10 years, creating even less incentive than currently exists for private insurance premiums to be lowered. To make matters worse, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimates that 19 million Americans would not buy insurance and as a result would be forced to pay $29 billion in taxes/fines. The Joint Committee on Taxation has made it clear that failure to pay these fines could result in jail time. Thirty-six states have passed or are considering measures that would allow their residents to opt out, including Virginia, Utah, Pennsylvania, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio. Given these fact, it is not surprising that a recent NBC News poll finds 57 percent of Americans do not want the government to create a law that requires everyone to have health insurance coverage and that only 38% of Americans favor the mandate, making it the least popular part of the bill. The American people stand in firm opposition to the individual mandate. We stand with them. We hope you will, too. What would health care cost if NOBODY had insurance?
I was reading about how doctors are now rating insurance companies, and one figure that stuck in my head was $210 BILLION wasted anually on excessive administrative costs. Not administration, UNNECESSARY administration. They want to cut out red tape, well, why not cut out insurance altogether? What would health care cost if NOBODY had insurance, and had to pay for everything out of pocket? I suspect that patients would start paying a lot more attention to their bills, doctors would have to start competing, and costs would plummet. Shoot, there'd be at least $210 billion a year more available! There's mention of one doctor who accepts a flat yearly rate, and doesn't accept insurance. Would this really be such a terrible way to do things? Letting doctors and patients decide what's fair, instead of insurance companies and the government? We could let people buy catastrophic insurance, but not general health funds like we have now. Could it work?""

Should parents pay for their kid's car insurance?
Our 17-soon to be 18-year old daughter has a part time job. She's going to be a senior this year in high school. We gave her a car when she turned 17 and put her on our insurance policy. Her insurance runs us $80/month. We have been paying this for almost a year now. I feel that since she has a job, and has no other financial responsibilities (besides her cell phone), she should be paying this insurance. She is very irresponsible with money, and spends money on a lot of frivolous things. I think having her pay her own insurance each month would help teach her fiscal responsibility. My husband, however, feels that it's the parent's responsibility to pay for their kid's car insurance. What do you think?""

Need insurance for mercedes car - which insurer will use mercedes repair centre?
I'm buying a Mercedes B class. Dual Car Insurance trouble?
I had insurance through a company called Sunset Plaza Insurance, and only agreed to do a 6 month period (from 12/08 to 06/09). I moved during the time, and never received a renewal notice at my new address, even after I gave them my new address. However, I found out that for the past 6 months (06/09 - 12/09) they have been charging me for insurance. But I never signed a renewal consent or anything! Should I buy a new car on interest free with free insurance or a second-hand car?
I have not owned a car in the UK, so have only had a full UK driver's licence for 4 years, although have driven in NZ for 14 years. Therefore, my insurance quotes have been in the region of 2 K. Was thinking of getting a new car to circumvent the hassle of looking for a second hand car and also to bring down my insurance the following year. Monthly repayments on a new car would be 200 on a 10 K car, or 3500 upfront for a second-hand car. Can someone give me a proper financial assessment and also the pros and cons of a second-hand and new car? Cheers!""

Hi, Basically the car i currently have is costing me a lot of money and my insurance didn't go down as much as id hoped. The question is since i'm paying monthly for my insurance will that go down depending on the value of the insurance? I find this confusing because there are so many hidden charges. many thanks!""

Health Insurance Confusion?
I'm a college student as of right now and I'm insured under my mother's plan. She's an OR nurse so pretty much anywhere I go in this town I don't have to pay much to get an appointment because all of them are with people who work for the hospital she works for. In the fall I will be attending a college two states away where I can waive my option to get campus health insurance or enroll to get it. Considering my health insurance only really works for this specific area do I enroll for the campus insurance? or waive? Because I know I will be getting checkups and such on campus anyway.

What are my health insurance options as a student?
I'm 22 years old and a full-time student at a California State university. Last month and without warning, my dad cut me off of his company's insurance and is refusing to put me back on because he claims we have no relationship and he essentially wanted to be spiteful as he has done since my parents divorced. My question is this: Can he even legally do this? As a full-time student, isn't it my right to be covered by his insurance? I can't get any insurance through my mother as she is unemployed. Because I'm pulling 19 units at school, I can't take on a full-time job to get health insurance. So what are my options? Is there a way to force my dad to put me back under his plan? If not, what should I do? I'm confused and scared because just over a month ago, I had to go to the ER because I broke my nose. Two days later was when my dad cut my insurance. Now I don't even know if that ER visit was covered because he didn't warn me before he cut me off. If someone could please help me figure out what to do in this situation, I would be very grateful!""

Car Accident Advice: Someone hit me and doesn't want to go thru insurance?
Someone recently hit my car while it was parked across the street from my house. I almost thought it was a hit and run till I found their business card on my windsheild. I called her and she said she'd rather not go through her insurance but pay me directly for the damage to my car. I have been in accidents where I was hit but usually the other person just gives me their insurance info and I call them and get my car fixed fast, no problems. So I was already a little hesitant about agreeing to this, but I figured as long as it gets fixed it should be alright. So I did like she said and got an estimate from a body shop, then called her with it. Right off she said, Oh thats really high,(almost a 1000) and I reminded her that the damage is pretty severe, she backed into my rear passenger door, now entirely dented and scratched up. I know the estimate is fair compared to other work I 've had in the past. So anyways, I thought she'd decide right there like she had told me before, if it was affordable for her she'd pay me if not she'll go through her insurance. So since she acted like that was so much money I asked well does that mean you want to just use your insurance? She still sounded unsure and said she needs to figure this out. So it's been another day since that, still waiting, she did call again and say she's running it by her insurance agent to see which way would be better for her, insurance or pay me off. So I am still waiting, it's only been a few days since the accident but I am getting anxious because I kind of wish she would just give me her insurance info and go through it, my car would probably be in the shop already and this would be taken care of. But instead I 'm waiting for her. She still has not given me her insurance info, I don't have her license plate # or even what her car looks like, just a business card. And its a big inconvenience because I know I will be without a car for a at least 2-3 days, and even if she pays me she sure didn't mention a rental car. So my question is am I being too nice by waiting for her to decide whats best for her... and even if she wants to pay me should I have gotten her insurance info, like is that my legal right. So how long should I wait for her to decide?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as obviously I should act fast. Thanks""

Vikas Jha, the human dung.
If you are acquainted with this excrement called Vikas Jha, I think, unknown to you, your life is a little tarnished. This bastard has been relentlessly pursuing my wife of a decade, with whom I have a child, for many years now. Read on.
2009 (Second year of marriage)
It started right at the time of my marriage, when my newly wedded wife and this garbage were preparing for their MBA entrance exams together. The garbage was apparently a “mentor”, and they both gave away very little to arouse any suspicion. At this time, I was in the US, and my wife was in India. Maybe that helped too.
Here is a filthy, flirty conversation from 2009, where my wife is planning to visit him in Delhi, on her way to a “pilgrimage”, while intentionally keeping me completely in the dark.
From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, March 28, 2009 10:33 AM me: havent slept VJ: u or me? am here … 10:35 AM VJ: dont sleep so soon me: y? what do i do VJ: aise hi. who will talk to me late nite then? me: god stop it yaar VJ: haha, isme stop it kya hua? matlab hum ab sirf serious rahe tumse :P:P … VJ: arreeeeeeee ruko btw my sister is awaiting u me: all preparation for me to come kya VJ: haha
They even had plans to visit the Taj Mahal together! A newlywed and her paramour.
Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009
me: both my tickets are booked. to and fro VJ: i think u will be too tired to roam in delhi. maybe we can just have dinner…and sleep me: i dunno. lets see if I am alive. agra plans tho cancelled only VJ: yes. u cancelled it. u dont trust me and trust urself toooooooooo. so i dont want to force 2:00 AM me: ok
Barely a year into our marriage, they hatched plans together on how to discourage me from asking her any “personal” questions, so she could continue on guilt free.
Date: Thursday, April 2, 2009
VJ: xxxx (husband's nickname) ok with ur trip now? me: haan VJ: how do u do that? me: does he have a choice;) VJ: haha VJ: no as in happy happy or sad happy? me: as in ok ok. neither happy nor sad as if it makes a difference to him. but he is fine with me now i advised him ;) like that way u did. thanks for ur advice …it helped control my temper VJ: :) what did u advise him? me: to be patient n make the reln work VJ: jajaja see who is ur best friend? ME ME ME ME ME ME me: hmm
The dung started entering into more aspects of our marriage. After almost 2 years living separately, I was trying to convince my wife to pick a nearby college for her MBA in the US so we could finally be together. In reality, she had applied to, and had an admit at a slightly higher ranked school far away, meaning two more years of long distance for us. She and the dung were scheming behind my back for the best way to break this great news to me, while also forcefully convince me to accept their choice.
I was doing everything I could to reason with her on the importance of this decision, how living away was taking its toll and why she refused to see my viewpoint. In return, she and her family accused me of being narrow minded, jealous, anti feminist, working against her bright career and acting under the decree of my extended family, abusing everybody from my parents to siblings to grandparents with the choicest of words. I weathered through all those, but what broke my heart was when I realized she was working with the muck, the “mentor”, to force me to bend to their decision. Though at the time I had no clue about their affair, learning your wife was taking the help of some random guy to get her way was so painful that I immediately gave up and agreed to whatever she said. Looking back, this might have been a turning point in our relationship.
Here’s a chat of the two, joyously celebrating their surprisingly easy “victory” over me.
Date: Thursday, April 9, 2009
me: hey u know what ? i told xxxx (husband's nickname) VJ: and he is ready? me: yes! VJ: hahahahaha hahahaha me: i cant blv it me: his first reaction was “wow..superb!”: VJ: congrats me: he said i must take this opportunity VJ: hahaha me: he is even ready to pay enrollment deposit VJ: what has happened to him? hahaha hahaha me: i dunno :( i m quite shocked. i thot he will fight VJ: so am I me: he said i can come over weekends, also later he might shift, he might hunt for another job, or try for transfer VJ: HAHAHAHA achanak? me: !!! yaaa. i cant blv it actually. cant expect such reactions from him VJ: dont wait for a moment. pay the deposit today. and cancel davis immediately. me: haha VJ: okies. will be back. 2 min. going to loo me: very happy! :D VJ: :) i can make out :) me: i still cant blv he said that. i dunno what made him change so much VJ: yes. im shocked. :P:P me: haan i thought he will fight a lot. u know what. from yesterday i m making sad face. he kept asking me y u r sad. i dint tell. finally told :) me: i want to re-confirm. not sure if he really said it VJ: haha me: he told me to use this credit card to pay VJ: haha!!! this is toooo much. too many goodies in one day.haaha me: now i m ready to cook anything on that show. anything MIL says i am ready. VJ: jaja me: haha
Meanwhile, they happily continued their shameless late night flirting, while also planning their date in Delhi.

This scumbag was also in a relationship with another “girl friend”, at the same time.
Who knows how many more were there.
My wife finally shifted to the US, to the school of her choice. But the illicit sewage followed. Now she would handle not one, but two long distances. In the name of innocent words like career development, MBA, entrepreneurship, mentorship, professional networking and many others, they carried on their merriment. Here is a sample of how they addressed each other, in an email about “Job Opportunities”.

Among other things, they got a kick out of fantasizing themselves in movies they could relate to. One was about a marriage between 2 different cultures, “north vs. south”, much like how it would have been if she had married the scum.

The other was about a man and a woman, both unhappily married to others, having a life long secret affair with each other, meeting on the same weekend each year.

At first, my wife branded the filth a career “mentor”. The moment the mentorship extends beyond very clear cut boundaries, that title is stripped and replaced with something far lower on the moral ladder. As my wife continued to discuss all things, career, marital, business etc. with it, filth found more ways to drive a wedge between them. Here is a conversation where the filth asks her to quit her marriage and settle back in India. Of course, it does not have the will or the guts to take her hand, especially with a child.
... me: I am very lonely here me: I want to get out of this marriage. Affecting my health Body n mind VJ: I can imagine. Everything gets affected. Becomes so difficult me: Marital life sucks too VJ: U shud think abt it. Moving back. Atleast hv parents n family around. There u r all alone. ...
Here is another conversation where the wife is “battered” that she cannot choose the scum for “life, or work”, because of her husband.
Very often, the conversations toyed around sex. Here’s one, for a New Year’s wish! When I saw this the first time, I went numb.
Here’s a plan for a “weekend of love making”.
Below is my wife, chatting in the middle of the night, making it abundantly clear the only reason she is hanging on to the marriage is for the sake of our kid, and for all the love, lust and affection, she will be leaning on the filth for fulfillment. In fact, this seemed like a great arrangement for both, since neither wanted to make their relationship official, nor did they want to break it off, but lead two separate lives, public and private.
They threw sweet somethings at each other all the time. Of course no topic was taboo to discuss, including eating pussy and getting wet in bed. The filth is absolutely certain that he should have replaced me in her life, and my wife is only too happy to provide compelling justifications for it!
And finally, here they are indulging in an enjoyable recollection of their drunken tryst in Delhi almost a decade ago! As promised, I will tell you what happened, in their own words.
Which red salwar suit, you ask ?
Not just the filth, but his entire family seems to want to jump on my wife! Here is a disgustingly similar flirt with his brother, whose only purpose in life seems to be to keep my wife laughing ! Late nights or early mornings, his eyes and ears are always at her disposal. And of course, my wife is only too happy to bash not just her work, but also her marriage with this manure.
If only this scum would show such eagerness to his own wife and kids, and stop right there.
Given all this, the question comes around to my response. Initially, for a very long time, I had no clue something was wrong. Even though my wife refused to make our marriage a priority, she continued to express her strong, unwavering love and affection towards me, and the difficulty of staying apart bearing down on her. They were so good at covering up, that even when I met the scum one time, they gave nothing away. But one day, I came across something that made me shudder. Suddenly, all her odd behaviors of secretively chatting on the phone late into the night, never picking up calls when I was around, and securing everything with multiple levels of passwords, that I had dismissed as quite harmless to me, seemed extremely suspicious. With only scraps of information from here and there, I painfully put the pieces of the puzzle together.
When I confronted her, her response was expectedly total denial. In return, she accused me of spying, “breaking trust”, and exhibiting my “narrow mindedness” and “insecurity” at her success. She in fact said I was “acting like a woman”. From there, she diverted the fights to unrelated topics, giving her familiar fodder to abuse me and my family. While this was going on, she obviously got way more careful with her trail, deleting chat records, changing passwords, clearing call logs, erasing emails and completely resetting devices to remove any trace.
When I was sufficiently convinced something was up, I even took the matter to her family, who were the only people she listened to. Of course they stood solidly behind her, without an iota of doubt about her character. More disappointedly, her mother sermoned there was nothing wrong in having a close knit relationship with anyone one was comfortable with, even the opposite gender. I don’t know in what context it was stated, but it seemed she was virtually giving her stamp of approval for her daughter’s behavior.
At first, it made my head reel in shock. I spent several weeks in confusion, pain and denial. I tried to stop myself from probing further, and really wished all this was not happening. As one more instance after another came to light and tore me apart, the agony and depression became unbearable. As I stumbled upon them, my hands would tremble, stomach would crunch and my head would feel dizzy. My heart would skip a beat every time I re-read the messages, trying to make sure I didn’t get them wrong. I have cried my eyes out in private, and consoled myself with pretty much nothing. Thinking about it, I have dangerously changed lanes on freeways, and lost track of what I was doing more than once, just because the pain was so terrible I would lose my senses for a while. On the one hand, I wanted to end it right there based on what I knew so far, and on the other, I wanted to find out the complete story, however hard or long it might take, before quitting. Our relationship strained lower, arguments got longer, fights got uglier, to the point where it was extremely difficult even to cohabit.

This is why SXSW still matters
Moments like this.
Image: lance ulanoff/mashable
Hugh Forrest sounded like he just did a spit-take on the phone. I was telling him how I wanted to explore South by Southwest Conference (SXSW), the music, film and interactive event that kicks off March 10 in Austin, Texas, in a fresh way. Imagine, I explained, a guy walking up to you on the streets of Austin and saying, Why does SXSW still matter, man?
SEE ALSO: Theres more than meets the eye at the 2017 SXSW Mashable House
Forrest, who has long served as SXSWs chief programming officer, collected himself and quickly rattled off five big-picture reasons why the long-running conference that sometimes seems over-stuffed with brand activations cans still pack a punch.
Full disclosure, Mashable is a SXSW partner. In fact, you can find us daily (March 10-12) hosting a Twitter Live show from the heart of Austin.
SXSW informs
Former United States President Barack Obama (r) and CEO and Editor-in-chief of the Texas Tribune Evan Smith (l) at SXSW 2016.

SXSW, which has 11 keynotes and over 2,800 sessions, is, predictably, about information. I think our role now is similar in many ways to what it has been throughout: To inform people, said Forrest. He added that SXSW can give context to developments in our rapidly-changing world, especially as they relate to music, film, startups and technology.
There will, for instance, be two days of panels devoted to Technology Under President Donald Trump, even though no almost one from the Trump Administration will be attending the event in any official capacity.
Whether you like or dont like Trump administration, he said, theyre still in a state of flux, trying to figure out what theyre doing, pulling things together, pulling their cabinet together. Given that kind of flux, I think SXSW is the last thing on their mind, at least I hope it is.
SXSW inspires
Meeting of the minds.
Image: lance ulanoff/mashable
SXSWs most popular speakers are the ones who inspire people with creativity innovation, new ideas, and new ways theyre connecting ideas, said Forrest. Its especially inspiring when they present innovative ways of pulling all those threads together to create something new.
That need for inspiration is more vital in 2017 than ever, said Forrest.
SXSW is networking heaven
We all just met (at SXSW 2016).
Image: lance ualnoff/mashable
SXSW offers unparalleled networking, Forrest told me. Meeting new people who may or may not be directly connected to your area of interest, but can still offer insight and inspiration, makes the networking aspect one of the most valuable pieces of the SXSW experience.
Its a great venue to meet creative people from all over the world, said Forrest.
SXSW helps you discover
I found this storm trooper and tie-fighter last year and took them home. Tell no one.
Image: lance ulanoff/mashable
SXSWs 24 content tracks have not changed much in the last few years, but they all offer an opportunity to find new ideas and people in your area of interest.
However, Forrest offered some seemingly counter-intuitive advice for SXSW attendees. If youre an expert in health, dont go to health panels, go to startups, foodGo to where you will get new ideas, outside your expertise.
SXSW is still about serendipity
Yes, you can do some very random stuff at SXSW.
Image: lance Ulanoff/mashable
Owing to the scale of SXSW, Forrest always encourages attendees to look at the schedule, download the app and arrive with a plan.
That said, most likely the most meaning you will get at the event, is something that will happen serendipitously, he added.
You might meet someone in person whom youve long-followed on social media. Or you cant get into one panel (a common occurrence), so you wander into another and learn something completely new.
Its hard to plan for those moments at SXSW, you must let them happen.
Most others I spoke to echoed Forrest’s sentiments.
When I asked internet entrepreneur and Vayner Media CEO Gary Vaynerchuk, whom I spoke to via Twitter DM, if he thought SXSW has been overrun by brands, he said, “Everything gets overrun by brands.”
However Vaynerchuk, who this year marks a decade of SXSW attendance, still sees value in SXSW:
[SXSW] matters cause of the scale of people that attend.
At the end of the day Conference’s and events are hugely ROI positive if you are capable of networking and being efficient with maximizing your meetings in a weekend that would have taken 6 months to accomplish.
It may not be as indie, but it’s made up in scale of serendipity of networking and new connections.
Chief evangelist of Canva and former chief evangelist of Apple, Guy Kawasaki has been attending for 6 years and told me via email SXSW is his favorite conference “because there are no billionaires and few venture capitalists. Most of the attendees are doers, not pretenders. Its the people who really do the work, not their bosses nor their investors. Brands arent ruining SXSW. Theyre providing the food and drinks that power it.”
Hilary Corna, five-year SXSW vet and author of One White Face was no less positive about SXSW in 2017 and told me via email:
The multi-faceted nature of SXSW means the more you go into the festival knowing what you want to get out of it, the better.
The festival is relevant if you wish to have access to people and meet people in person that you otherwise would have a hard time meeting. Its relevant if you wish to be exposed to the most extra-ordinary projects, thought-processes, and cross disciplinary technologies and conversations being had in some of the most upper echelon organizations (and also the coolest startups youve never heard of). Its relevant if you have specific goals in current companies or solo adventures you are pursuing such as knowledge transfer, networking, or understanding competitors.
Knowledge, opportunity, serendipity remain linchpins of SXSW. And even amidst all the brand activations, crowded streets, and surfeit vats of queso, there will be some show-making moments.
For his part, though, Forrest is most excited about Professor Jennifer Doudnas keynote. The chemistry and molecular and cell biology scientist will be talking about her groundbreaking work in CRISPR-mediated genome-editing.
When I asked him why Doudna’s talk so intrigued him, Forrest offered a surprisingly personal reason:
Ive been doing SXSW for way too long and have some built up some proficiency over the years in slotting panels, but my dad [Dr. Hugh Forrest], who is now retiring, was a geneticist for 50 years. So having someone like Jennifer Doudna at the event is like the closest to me having a similar trajectory to my dad. Its something he and I can talk about.
Which may be the main reason why SXSW still matters: It invariably starts a conversation.
