While this is a good breakdown, I’m not entirely sure I agree with the portrayal of the Doylist view as being inherently more true, or with the Watsonian view being more naive. I don’t necessarily think that one is better than the other, but I will argue the other sides of what was written above for the sake of balance.

Doylist point of views have a tendency to be jaded. They assume that things happen by the readers own perspective of the way the real world works, and the way the people involved think and behave. Sometimes this is appropriate, and most likely correct, like with the bunny girl the example listed above… other times it shuts down actual media analysis with bad faith takes that, refuse to connect with the media as an art form with something it is trying to say.

For instance, chalking a character’s unusual behaviour up as the result of the episode having a different writer isn’t just trite, it’s objective, and makes assumptions of things going on behind the scenes that you ultimately have no real knowledge of. Perhaps that was what was going on, perhaps it wasn’t, perhaps it was something intentional the audience was supposed to pick up on? Perhaps it’s an intentional subtlety that fits into a bigger picture the writers were trying to tell. Perhaps it will be something later. Perhaps the show is finished and it’s an echo of an idea they decided to drop? Sometimes there is no clear truth. Sometimes the truth is a mixture.

The Watsonian view meanwhile, can be about engaging with a piece of media on its own merits, and analysing it on the strength of itself on its own two feet. Things like world building and can be a legitimate answer as to why the story goes in the directions it does, especially in works where those things are the fleshed and important parts of the world.

The Watsonian fan and the writer are not a different species. Writers can and do sink hours into their world building and character work, trying to stick to the laws they created and follow them through to their natural conclusion. They put those things in their work for others to pick up on, even if those things are just background because there are more important things to put in the foreground. Those things are placed there on purpose for people to pick up on and think about.

Sometimes the curtains are blue because that was the only fabric the set designer had. Sometimes the curtains are blue because it says something about the themes of the work. Sometimes the curtains are blue because it’s the colour the character would have picked out. All of these reasons can be true and all of them can be false. It depends on the work in question.

I feel like we need a refresher on Watsonian vs Doylist perspectives in media analysis. When you have a question about a piece of media - about a potential plot hole or error, about a dubious costuming decision, about a character suddenly acting out of character -

A Watsonian answer is one that positions itself within the fictional world.

A Doylist answer is one that positions itself within the real world.

Meaning: if Watson says something that isn't true, one explanation is that Watson made a mistake. Another explanation is that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made a mistake.

Watsonian explanations are implicitly charitable. You are implicitly buying into the notion that there is a good in-world reason for what you're seeing on screen or on the page. ("The bunny girls in Final Fantasy wear lingerie all the time because they're from a desert culture!")

Doylist explanations are pragmatic. You are acknowledging that the fiction is shaped by real-world forces, like the creators' personal taste, their biases, the pressures they might be under from managers or editors, or the limits of their expertise. ("The bunny girls in Final Fantasy wear lingerie because somebody thought they'd sell more units that way.")

Watsonian explanations tend to be imaginative but naive. Seeking a Watsonian explanation for a problem within a narrative is inherently pleasure-seeking: you don't want your suspension of disbelief to be broken, and you're willing to put in the leg work to prevent it. Looking for a Watsonian answer can make for a fun game! But it can quickly stray into making excuses for lazy or biased storytelling, or cynical and greedy executives.

Doylist explanations are very often accurate, but they're not much fun. They should supersede efforts to provide a Watsonian explanation where actual harm is being done: "This character is being depicted in a racist way because the creators have a racist bias.'" Or: "The lore changed because management fired all of the writers from last season because they didn't want to pay then residuals."

Doylism also runs the risk of becoming trite, when applied to lower stakes discrepancies. Yes, it's possible that this character acted strangely in this episode because this episode had a different writer, but that isn't interesting, and it terminates conversation.

I think a lot of conversations about media would go a lot more smoothly, and everyone would have a lot more fun, if people were just clearer about whether they are looking to engage in Watsonian or Doylist analysis. How many arguments could be prevented by just saying, "No, Doylist you're probably right, but it's more fun to imagine there's a Watsonian reason for this, so that's what I'm doing." Or, "From a Watsonian POV that explanation makes sense, but I'm going with the Doylist view here because the creator's intentions leave a bad taste in my mouth that I can't ignore."

Idk, just keep those terms in your pocket? And if you start to get mad at somebody for their analysis, take a second to see if what they're saying makes more sense from the other side of the Watsonian/Doylist divide.

My bias for Faifa and Wine is on full display in episode twenty-three of Perfect 10 Liners. Everyone else can eat dirt because I only care about my Lapis Lads!

Faifa wakes up happy to be alive with his Blue Boy right next to him, and everything is right in the world!

And I'm not even that mad at Black Brooder Yotha and Green Guy Gun (who seems to be slightly wearing his man's color)

Because their antics caused Blue Boy Faifa to pout which allowed Wine to deliver all the kisses his man wanted because Faifa will never be denied another thing that makes him happy as long as Wine is alive!

And now our other Blue Boy Phuri gets to witness his buddy in ultimate bliss because he has a boyfriend who loves him with his whole heart!

But while Faifa is finally living his best life, Green Guy Po lost his color after his partner (????) broke up with him for being too nice, which not only came as a surprise to him, but to me too since I had no idea he even had someone!

But his friends barely seem prepared to handle their friend's emotions since Blue Boy Sand isn't even in his color, and I have to squint to see Yellow Yal Arm in his color, but at least he is wearing Red Rascal Arc's color in the text on the shirt.

But we won't see those colors again since only my Blue Boys seem to care about sticking to the color assignment!

How does a heartbroken Green Guy get his color back, but these other guys can't wear their designated color?! I need answers, wardrobe department! I know twenty-four episodes is a lot, but I need the boys in their colors AT ALL TIMES!

Not even the ones who are about to be engaged can commit to their colors!

But I appreciate Klao for admitting he doesn't know how to propose since he is too hood, so he goes to a rich boy to ask how he can soften his approach even though I'm sure Warit would have been fine with Klao proposing during sex with his hand around his throat.

I love that Wine finally squashed this bullshit the family continues to tote out about Faifa.

His man not only knows how to love, but Faifa does it soooo well that Wine wanted to boo him up from the start and is about to go get that bracelet for his man so Faifa is constantly reminded that Wine loves him just as much as Faifa loves Wine!

Look at this dark Blue Boy! He is over everyone's shit. With the power of Faifa's love, he can do all things, and he is going to prove to the man he loves that he IS loved even if he has to go to an indie music festival alone to get that bracelet. We know he hates traveling, but our boy is so committed to his man, that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make Faifa understand how much he is loved!

Tawan was just out there making Wine do random drills since he couldn't give him any love advice BECAUSE FAIFA ALREADY MADE SURE WINE KNEW HE WAS LOVED!

So, of course, Wine would imagine his man there with him after he lied to him because Wine doesn't lie to his guy! He told Faifa he was meeting Tor, and even though Faifa was upset about it, he said he would be an idiot to not trust Wine, but now Wine lied to Faifa because he wants to show him how much he loves him by getting that bracelet for his birthday because Faifa is the best boy to ever exist!

Who is doing it better than this Blue Boy? NOBODY!

And that's why Faifa booted his mom out of his car at the airport, went to Wine's friends to see where his man really was, then went to that music festival TO HELP HIS GUY since he knew Wine, who hates traveling, was not prepared for this adventure instead of getting mad at him for lying to him.

And that's why Faifa deserves all the love he is about to get from Wine.

I don’t have the money right now to buy them, but I want you to know that one of your cat magnets, Kiwi, looks SO much like my sweet childhood Tabico that passed last year. Her name was Keke, which is pronounced very similarly to Kiwi (alternative spelling of the name is also Kiki, just one letter off!). She would have turned 20 this April.

I hope the ramble is okay. It just brought me a lot of joy to see one so close to her!

If you ever want ideas for new colors/patterns for designs, I’d recommend looking into ‘Salmiak’ aka ‘The Finnish Mutation’! It’s only been found in one population of very inbred cats in Finland, but it makes an interesting gingham-esque crosshatched pattern.‘Salmiak’ actually comes from Finland’s signature salty licorice candy, Salmiakki! It’s a very acquired taste and when I’ve had it, it tastes a lot like how cat pee smells. I still wouldn’t say that it’s wholly bad.

I would make a salmiak if someone promised to order one! I do love those weirdos, and all weirdos.

I'm glad kiwi brings you joy. I worked in a cat shelter for 2 years, and my favorite duties (which I usually donated) was taking profile photos and writing descriptions of them. So most of the beans are based on shelter cats I knew, named, and adopted to their forever homes.

Because I have experience with several hundred cats, I know what colors are common and how to make something generic enough to fit a bunch of cats within that color scheme. Kiwi is a dilute tortie with white, aka a dilute calico, but i leaned more toward tortie with the color mixing.

As for cost, they aren't all that expensive. A sticker is only a dollar! And shipping is 1-3 dollars even for international.

While I like making money, I'm poor myself, so I always add low-cost options so everyone can benefit.

By the way, did you know you can turn any sticker into a magnet? You can get a bendable magnet at a craft store, or repurpose one from the thrift store. They're really easy to cut with scissors and then you have it!

You can do this with any sticker from anywhere!

And flexible magnets are easy to come across. You can go to a craft store or even a hardware store. Some are printable, some are glueable, some come with their own adhesive for double the stick.

And some aren't meant to be used for crafts, but for vents!

I cut mine out with my cutting machine, but if you're just doing a few you can cut them with scissors.

Be a bit wary when buying magnets online or in packages where you can't feel them. Magnet thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch) and anything below 20 mil sucks. The paper thin stuff can't even hold up its own weight, much less a shopping list. Most craft magnets don't have the mils listed, but they're usually 12 mil and suck.

A ramble gets a ramble in return! Now you know how to make your own magnets and can order stickers from me or anyone else in the world and get fridgable items. Magnet hack!

Teenage Tweek Head Canons

These are my teenage Tweek head canons:

• Tweek becomes even more anxious and jittery as a teenager, but he tries to mask it with forced confidence.

• He’s still prone to overthinking and tends to jump to the worst conclusions about any situation.

• His caffeine addiction grows, and he starts drinking multiple cups of coffee a day to stay awake and manage his nerves.

• He starts to develop some coping mechanisms, like breathing exercises, but they don’t always work in stressful situations.

• He’s self-conscious about his twitching and his constant nervous energy, sometimes feeling like everyone’s watching him.

• He and Stan have a somewhat distant friendship, but Tweek still values his presence and often gets anxious when Stan is upset.

• He remains close to Kenny and Kyle, even if they don’t always understand his anxious tendencies.

• He and Craig start to get more serious as they mature, with Tweek often worrying that he’s not good enough for Craig.

• He still feels like an outsider in the group, constantly second guessing himself, even though he’s accepted as one of the friends.

• He’s incredibly loyal to his friends and would go out of his way to help them, even if it makes him uncomfortable.

Day 19: AU

Naga & researcher AU! Medicine expert Marcille is doing research on naga venom because it may have properties that could innovate pharmaceutics and could helo work towards immortality... My thought was that it causes paralysis in a way that keeps cells in stasis but idfk. So researcher Marcille Donato has to find a friendly enough naga gentlefolk to study and harvest venom from… Cue Chilchuck "I am sooo mean and dangerous, fear me or I'll do you in -proceeds to not do anything even when she sticks around and starts being clingy-" He had to grow harder and tougher it's a harsh world out there but he's a real nice guy… Just... Shouty... Marcille like "Actually I don't think you'll kill me if I stay here for some time to take field notes" and he gives up on denying it.

Pushing Marcille's "I want to study him like a petri dish" towards Chilchuck to the most literal I can

Maybe nagas have a short lifespan… Maybe to make venom strains the body and they have a faster metabolism. So it's kinda, the hope for her goals that he creates is also what kills him faster…? Like, harvesting the venom puts stress on the body because then it hastens to make more venom. And Marcille has to let her research about the far future of her friends go to instead enjoy her present with them...

Ok that's story info but design wise I also have to say, when I got to spontaneously choose how to color him I went with a Brazilian Rainbow Boa's patterns! Simply because I am biased and have one as pet. Are they venomous? ..... No. Do they have a fast metabolism? Snakes generally don't. Do they live in deserty places? A jungle actually. Did you know they are pretty close relatives to anacondas, they swim, burrow in the ground AND climb trees ☝️ They have really cool moon & star patterns lowkey and a nice kinda gold color, AND they're iridescent!!!! And those motifs always go so so hard with marchil It did send me spiralling though, like… A cornsnake or some plain brown snake would work really well for him, or a sand boa. And then I was thinking about his daughters and what species his wife should be and— black snakes often have really nice iridescence too, seriously look up black boas or indigo snakes, and now I'm thinking about Chil shining as some theme, like Marcille being like "noo you may not see it but you have plenty of qualities, you're a diamond in the rough"… Even if between the two of them Marcille is more diamond-like as far as he's concerned… The world looks so much more colorful when it's being reflected through her.

Idk why but Sparkbreak ( 500 ) from the Roleswap seems like the type of " player " that resets a bunch of times for the " best outcome " or will reset if their favorite character/cat dies in a patrol or moon skip.

That probably sounds insane so let me explain. Moth ( 404 ) seems to have the type of playstyle of someone who's trying to tell a story/stick to a certain rule list like for challenges. Ik it's all to make cat's suffer but she's very methodical ( like cm only players interested in story lore would headcannon their rng kitty to have psychology broken at the sight of their God and then moon reset until they get the Kill Yourself prompt (( now that I say that that sounds like shade at you I promise it's not )) )

But Spark ( 500 ) would have the playstyle of getting to attached to every cat within the small clan and not wanting anything to happen to them, so I see him resetting moons that have death in them, resetting when a patrol outcome results in injury/death, and other odd things ( like if the clans prey stores are low just coding in more or even turning it completely off ).

But tbh thinking about it this way, I'd hate ro like in a 500 world. Could you imagine watching a friend/sibling/parent/partner die right in front of you? Then in an instant your back in your nest at the start of the day and they come in the den bringing you food like always. You never starve because the pile is always full, but you take note that it's always full, and that even if every cat was hunting at all times, they still couldn't catch that much. You feel like you should've been dead a long time ago. You're an elder that's surpassed life expectancy, you're suffering but something won't let you die. You're his daughter, he'd never hurt you, but in helping you he is.

I liked reading this! And this is an interesting idea for reverse Spark/500 in the sense that he’s the opposite of 404. Maybe instead of becoming hateful of everyone and himself he sees it as an opportunity to protect everyone he loves from what horrors he’s witnessed, and not 404’s differing mindset of wanting to break others down because of the mentioned horrors.

This has its drawbacks of course—the cats in the clan, the favored ones at least, will basically be invincible to any obstacle. They’re healthy and well fed. They will have no memory of dying or being in pain because 500 made sure they could never die. Imagine if they saw someone they loved die, and in the next moon, they’re suddenly conversing with you like it never happened. Everything is perfect, but too perfect, in an uncanny and fake way. Maybe your inferior mind can’t pinpoint exactly what’s wrong with your life, but something is definitely not right.

What if 500 picks favorites like the ‘favoriting’ system the actual game has? What does he do with the cats he doesn’t like? Would Out Of Bounds be turned into a prison for those cats if they end up dead? Would he cause their deaths to stay out of their ‘perfect clan’? How would 500 deem which cat is more favorable? He’s extremely protective to who he loves… and that’s his biggest flaw. Everyone else will languish, because to him, that’s the way it should be for them.

Or think of this! If he really wants to… he could alter a cat completely. New personality, appearance, quirks, a completely different cat, and everything would change to fit his view so that you’re the ‘ideal version’. One moment, you’re yourself. Next moment, you’re unrecognizable to yourself. Good for him, probably good for others, but for you? You would never know.

So what we’re getting at is; 404 and 500’s way of managing the game is just another example of dystopias and utopias… Neither are favorable but that’s what’s fun! Two sides of the same coin, meddling with something that they shouldn’t in order to benefit themselves… I think they’d fit this song really well actually.

I did base his design off of AM! Since it’s something I didn’t really do for 404 and I still want him to be based off of the same things that inspired 404, but just enough so that he’s his own thing. His original sketch had him look way more similar to him, but I went for a more cat-like look instead

HI! Hello, PRACTICE… as cliche as it sounds, my old art is absolute ass cheeks compared to what I’m doing now, I only started drawing mecha back in November so, my advice might be mid but I’ll try

Mecha, to me are basically people, only with bulk, (armour) I’d practice consistently drawing rectangles and squares at different angles to lock in the 3D aspect from different POVs

The main points I’d say are the chassis, helm, shoulders and torso, those are where the most distinctive features are, (or where I think they are)

As the legs tend to just be straight to the point, small rectangle with bigger rectangle below

Normally, I don’t do pre sketches, I tend to just go straight for it with my art stuff, but prior to that I would use references, have about 5 layers of sketches and attempt to cleanup my art,

Doing this however, for me it felt constricting and strict, I wasn’t enjoying it, so I started playing around with my style, finding what I like doing best,

The main brushes I use are ‘wild light, inka and oil paint, However I try and experiment with other ones consistently to push myself, so I often use nikko rull, aurora, syrup, water pen and fine tip/baskerville pandani, leatherwood, old beach, quoll, chalk— yknow the list goes on and on actually

Transformers Mecha you’ll find are massively similar, once you break it down, here’s a quick diagram below of sideswipe being rendered

If you’re brand new to mecha, pick a universe you like and start there, for me I started drawing g1 first and that’s where majority of my designs come from, as I’ve gotten consistency I occasionally add subtle aspects from other universes to the characters

For me, I only drew prowl and jazz at the beginning, but I gradually moved out to different characters once I grew more confident to tackle the different chassis/helms

For your own art (or anyone else reading this) I highly recommend trying new things, don’t feel restricted to do it by the norm if you don’t enjoy it,

For me, my main moto is that art is supposed to be fun, if you don’t like doing it, you’ll have a hard time sticking to it, it’s important to not make it a chore as it becomes soul crushing to force yourself to do it :))

Bottom line,

Have fun, Don’t overly criticise yourself, mistakes are OKAY!! Don’t punish yourself, Be loose with it, experiment, Please don’t feel like it’s the end of the world if a piece isn’t looking how you imagined, practice makes perfect, like, seriously, no joke on that one

I added this speedpaint, whenever I draw a new character, I have a basic ref on my phone for their colours and just go ham, straight in I try not to pause and ‘fix’ everything, If I don’t like it, I can do that at the end 😼😼 just to kinda show the process, I’ve got more speedpaints if this goes well, but I can only add one vid at a time 😭

So turns out a video I made between a certain “well beloved but highly sensitive/emotionally reactive T.V” and an “orange haired inkling-turned-human” has managed to sweep my YouTube channel and accumulate 100k VIEWS!! THAT’S A LOT OF PEOPLE ACTUALLY?? My most widely viewed video EVER to exist in this moment in time?? AAAAA?? Not even mentioning the various comments and staggering increase in subs! It’s so much more then what I expected or even prepared for—might even be the most impactful thing to happen for me this year <3

…aside from graduating high school + the social connections I’ve been fortunate to make lol

BUT THE POINT IS I’d been closely monitoring the YouTube growth through the entirety of October. It’s make me smile like a dork, gawk in astonishment, dance frantically in my room from the energy boosts, and grow courage to stop being so selective/self-conscious with what I wish to share with the world! It’s kept my ambitions going!

I needed to find some way to celebrate the occasion and express my thanks—because I can’t NOT acknowledge this milestone jksjskp. Typically I try to avoid getting tunnel visioned focusing on the metrics/numbers. Mr. Puzzles had already demonstrated how much those things can mess with the minds of creatives. Caring too much about chasing views or placing your artistic value in attention seeking gets damaging. But at same time…it’s hard to deny the sense of pride the 100k achievement has filled me with. I understand that reaching 100k views doesn’t immediately make me any “better” or “worse” then I was before. I’m still just me! It only helps me feel seen by others—and that’s all I really needed. To hear some nice words & receive reminders that my ideas are cared about. So thank you SMG4 fandom for that, seriously thank you.

Please accept this Mr. Puzzle drawing as a way of sharing the happiness around. He’s so entertaining. Love him for simply existing. So glad we can all collectively be super attached to him (and the rest of the SMG4 cast of course). Can’t wait to see more incredible artworks from the fandom :)

Just incase anyone is confused by my vague description over which “animated video” I’m referring to here—hopefully this photo will help clarify lol. It’s this one!! Sorry about not outright stating the title at the start, I got carried away with writing!!

I’ve been in an odd place mentally when thinking about it. Wondering to myself if any of the attention is deserved considering it’s not even fully colored and could be dismissed as “low effort” content (despite taking several days making it). It’s easy to get into a trap of comparing yourself to others and questioning how much of the videos success is based on your skills, sheer algorithm luck, or only because you used popular characters and catered to a specific fandom. And then judging yourself by looking at other peoples videos. I’ve seen several artists post higher quality works then my own but it somehow gets less views. So why did mine succeed when others (who should have gotten just as much attention if not more) didn’t? Sometimes you feel like you’ve unfairly robbed them of that chance to be seen. However I’ve realized that I can’t ever expect views to be consistent—and comparing is pointless. So why worry about it or feel inadequate? I mean it’s pretty common for funny cat videos to go viral, so who am I to question the system lol. “Popular” YouTube videos can range from a passion project which took 7+ artists…to a clip of Toad singing Chandelier or a nonsensical Vine sketch. Anything can happen when it’s the internet! And just-so-happened my video was chosen. I should stay glad about that and get rid of all the overanalyzing. So that’s what I’ve chosen to do :)

Darla/Angelus is also great because the show has a competing designated OTP and they exist to serve as contrast and hateful competition to THE ship. they are soulless monsters even by the standards of soulless monsters, they literally make the other soulless monsters go "yikes... your relationship seems not good maybe." but they love each other so fucking much. the writers can't help it. they are constantly trying to find their way back to each other. the way she hits him over a head with a shovel and leaves him to an angry mob while he tries to say he doesn't mind dying if it's with her AND the way they coo about it to each other afterwards. the way she takes him back against her better judgement because she missed him so so much but then kicks him out again later because he still can't be who she needs him to be. that's just how they say i love you.

I hoped to animate her here and there as she has a unique kind of coloring...

Like... she's more 2d/cartoony in terms of light and shadow, almost as if light doesn't affect her too much and she cast barely any shadows besides on her own body. This doesn't mean darkness or shadows from other stuff casting on her wouldn't take effect though, she'd just be more lighter than other people in the dark. Oh and she glows slightly too in the dark lol

So yeah !! She basically stands out a lot 😭

Sometimes I wonder how my life would have worked out if I had figured shit out with drawing and art earlier because, really, a lot of my frustrations with stuff like graphic design, looking back, came from the fact I actually wanted to draw my ideas because I never ever liked photo editing.
