Advice given to students at Art Institute of Pittsburgh by Illustrator Brad Hollland; " Do something you love, you may not get rich, but at least you will spend your life doing something you love."-- Brad Holland.
Holland began sending drawings to Walt Disney and The Saturday Evening Post[2] at the age of 15. At 17, after receiving a box of his drawings back from Disney with a Mickey Mouse masthead rejection letter as well as numerous rejection letters from The Saturday Evening Post, Holland traveled by bus to Chicago where he found odd jobs, including sweeping the floor of a tattoo parlor. At age 20 the artist was hired by Hallmark in Kansas City to illustrate books as a staff artist. Among the books he would illustrate for Hallmark was A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.[3] In 1967 at age 23, Holland moved to New York City to pursue a career as a full-time freelance illustrator. in 1968 under the art direction of Herb Lubalin, the two significant milestones in Holland's early career were becoming a regular contributor to Playboy starting in 1967 and in 1970 establishing himself as a frequent contributor to The New York Times op-ed page.[6] At Playboy, his talent was first recognized by art director Art Paul, who after seeing the artists work invited him to become a monthly contributor.[5] Hollands' monthly contributions to Playboy accompanied the Ribald Classics series.
Brad Holland is one of the most influential illustrators of our time. His drawings and paintings have graced the covers of magazines around the world, and his unique style has inspired a generation of artists. He has been recognized in major international design journals and has received awards from graphic arts organizations in many countries.
In 1999, the Musee des Beaux Arts exhibited a restrospective of his paintings at Clermont-Ferrand, France. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique International (AGI).
I had the privilege of sketching with Holland one afternoon when I was employed by the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in the 1970s.

Sorry if you’ve answered this before but how did you learn to draw? I love your style so so much and am super interested to hear how you developed it!
I used to check out those how to draw books from the school library in elementary school to learn how to draw Archie comics characters, and then took art classes as an elective in high school. deviantart for tutorials when I didn’t know how to draw something, town public library for finding books on color theory, etc. I carried (and still do) a sketchbook around in case I saw cool knickknacks or trees and wanted to remember it because I didn’t have a cellphone with a camera until I was, like, twenty lmao. eventually it just kind of culminated into a style!
#I went to a trade art school but it wasn’t for learning art it was for learning the professional publication production work pipeline#I wanted to like. be the person formatting graphic novels bc graphic design is my passion. or a colorist or editor lmao.#unfortunately the whole industry sucked so I freelance as an illustrator now#the most Art related thing I did in art school was probably the mandatory life drawing sessions which I started doing in highschool#for fun and whimsy#and also because I saw an ad for it in a local paper and thought ‘oh cool just like da Vinci would have done’#ask tag

What I Did Last Week: October 28-November 1, 2024
Here we are with another edition of “What I Did Last Week,” where I share my day-to-day life as a self-employed creative person. Every weekday (and some weekends) I keep track of all the work I’ve done each day, as a way to keep me on track as a full-time working artist. Fellow creatives and freelancers, whether or not you choose to share it publicly, I urge you to join me in this weekly professional accountability exercise.
Weekly recap: Finally, I was able to have a weekend without doing any work (though I definitely thought about it and felt sort of guilty about it). Collagetober is officially done, which is a bit of a relief. As much as I enjoyed this particular challenge and was able to batch some of it, the stress of daily prompts always ends up pretty heavy by the end of the month. Time to agonize about something much bigger for the next few days...
Monday October 28
Sent out monthly newsletter.
Website updates.
Sent various check-in and follow-up emails.
Worked on preliminary sketch edits for a medical illustration client project and sent for review.
Worked on edits to a different medical illustration client project.
Met with a science design client about an ongoing project.
Volunteer stuff.
Collagetober #29 & 30.
Tuesday October 29
Scanned and edited Collagetober prompts.
Website and online shop updates.
Worked on sketch edits for a medical illustration client project and sent for review.
Worked on two different science design client projects and met with one of those clients to discuss the ongoing work.
Worked on a medical illustration client project.
Wednesday October 30
Prepared and sent invoice and final deliverables for a completed medical illustration client project.
Worked on two different science design client projects and sent for review.
Collagetober #31.
Thursday October 31
Worked on edits for two different science design client projects.
Worked on a medical illustration client project and sent for review.
Worked on preliminary sketches for a different medical illustration client project.
Website and online shop updates.
Friday November 1
Monthly financial assessment.

ugh applying to jobs recently has felt like back when i was in college the first time applying to movie theater jobs and getting denied without an interview despite being 19 with 2 years of experience - including managerial experience
#like bruh#now i'm 25#i have 3 years professional design experience (not including any freelance)#I have multiple years of managerial experience#i almost have two (2) bachelor's#i know java; javaScript and python.. I'm learning SQL and C++#i'm sooooo proficient now in illustrator and corelDraw#and i use RhinoCAD regularly#i hate it. but I do use it at least weekly#i have never ONCE not gotten a job offer after an interview#literally i have /never/ not been offered a job if i actually get to the interview stage#furthermore i've had employers literally beg for me to stay#and yet i cannot fucking get an interview to save my life#(altho tbf most of the jobs i'm applying for are above my weight class)#but some of them??#'do you have experience designing graphics for apparel?'#YES. refreshing myself on the exact real prices for the kind of work that goes into these graphics was a mistake now i'm remembering why i didn't do it for years lol
#pay no attention to the man behind the curtain / ooc.#for those who aren't aware of freelance artist pricing: i've spent a whole day on a single graphic before#and the suggested base rate for a beginner graphic designer is $20-25ish an hour (i didn't see much about a flat rate for a single product)#and i also looked at illustration prices since that's adjacent#and i know it can be more project based in it's pricing and for just a small black and white spot illustration (like a chapter topper)#was on this one association's pricing guide over $250 dollars#and then i see the prices in the rp comm for gorgeous things i know are multiple hours of work going for $2-30-ish dollars#and it's just so galling. getting paid as a freelance artist is already very fraught this just feels like a kick in the teeth#even if someone's doing commissions as a hobby for pocket money i believe they deserve fair compensation for their hours of labor and skill#but i don't think the pricing in this market is ever gonna change so i just gotta get used to it or stay out lol

People vastly over-complicate the issues surrounding AI algorithms and art — did the artists who are being used in said algorithm get paid to be there? Did they sign off rights? If not, then it’s theft from a small creator.
#it’s that simple#being an artist is impossible already#i worked graphic design for a year and my boss tried replacing me w AI and freelancer (a shitty websites that takes advantage of artists)#go away fern#also full offense but if you’re not an artist you don’t really have a say about this#bc it’s not your work or livelihood being used freely without consent or payment#if voice actors don’t want their voices being replicated through AI why is it okay to do so to artists?#(it’s bc people don’t respect illustrators and designers the way they do actors)

Meet the Artist: @artfoold00k
Oh, greetings! I'm Dartsy (or Dook) and I live as a full-time freelance digital artist. On my journey as an artist, I learned traditional arts basics, vector, traditional 2D animation, and self-taught the digital way. Tested my art skill in book illustration and video games, became passionate about fictional characters and their design. I like vivid personalities, cute people and pets (FERRETS!AaAa), folklore, and tales. I'm a neat freak, an art knowledge explorer, a cozy doodler.
Nice to meet you, Dartsy! Below are some of her artworks that she has picked out to share with you all.
Check out more of Dartsy's work over at her Tumblr, @artfoold00k!

new comprehensive (long, so sorry) commission post!! i lost my job a couple months ago (turns out the office manager is literally evil and she set me up to get fired on purpose :D) so commissions and my freelance work are my main source of income rn and every single extra comm helps!!
i’ve also been trying to take advantage of my free time and use it to grow as an artist and practice things i normally don’t so i would love to try some more nonstandard comms alongside tattoos!
as always line art only tattoo designs are $50 flat (*edit to say line art only FLASH tattoo designs), full color tattoo designs and everything else offered (portraits in any style, illustrations, posters) are all unique and prices will depend on content so if you’re interested or if you’ve got an idea and you’re not sure i can do it, feel free to shoot me a message for more info!!
examples of my work! (please open the images for full view i’m bad at formatting) ⬇️
posters! from show specific, to movie posters inspired by your fave albums or songs! (does not have to be mcr i just have brain worms)
tattoos! from small flash designs to full scale, neo trad or line work or anything in between!
illustrations! full page, comic-inspired, small and stylized (gerard way style inspiration optional!), you name it!
portraits!! these are my favorite to do and i never get to do them! pencil or painting, if sketchy and painterly are your thing i can do that! if cleaned up and smooth are your thing i can also do that!
so sorry for the novel length post, i hate doing it as much as you all hate seeing it, but a girl’s gotta pay the bills! tumblr is where i first found my footing as someone who was taking commissions and i’m allergic to social media these days but tumblr still feels as comfy as it did back then and i appreciate everyone who has been kind and supportive to me here over the years!! even reblogs help, thanks y’all!!
#i’ve got some things lined up this summer but they simply do me no good right now#anyways! tags for visibility i’m so sorry#art#digital art#illustration#mcr#my chemical romance#tattoo#traditional tattoo#lord of the rings#mine#arty art
