CONFESSION:
The fandom majority will likely disagree (and probably push back) but I don't think Fenris hates mages, or magic to an extent. Slavers? Yes. Hadrianna and Danarius? Absolutely. But magic and mages? It's distrust (and fear) that comes out as aggression which comes across as hate.
There's multiple occasions where he'll readily admit that his past colors things and that he doesn't doubt there's good mages in the world. Then he'll flat out refuses to turn in Anders or Merrill when Sebastian asks if he'll back him up on it. Another is every decision (that I can think of) that he pushes back on that's considered pro mage has the potential to be extremely dangerous for their group and others.
For example sending Feynriel (spelling?) to the Dailish. The kid readily admits to being plagued by demons damn near constantly and the only example he has of how the Dailish handle magic is Merrill who was kicked out of her clan for doing dangerous magic with no regard or care if she ends up harming people. Of course he's going to want him to be sent to the Circle because if he does lose to the demons there's templars to stop things. And sending him to Tevinter? I mean..
Lastly his clashes with Merrill and Anders aren't because they're mages, or hatred towards them, but because of the dangers their choices could have on people, themselves included. I'm not saying anything, or everything, he says or does is excusable or right. However to simply put him in a box by saying he hates mages, and conversely saying his history absolves him of everything, across the board does him a huge disservice.
