𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤-- What was the last vacation you took? I love the idea of lake vacations but the fires are so bad right now that it will be a long time before we can even have a lake day. Today on the blog I'm kicking off my three post series featuring The Girls Are Never Gone and @sarahmarshauthor with recommendations based off the book. One of the books that made my list was Dark Across the Bay by @aniaahlborn which has a lot of the same, eerie vibes as The Girls Are Never Gone. Head on over to the blog to see the other books that made my list and check out the synopsis of The Dark Across The Bay below! SYNOPSIS The house sits stoic and slightly askew off the coast of Raven’s Head. Its off-kilter windows are both charming and disorienting, its walls of overstuffed bookshelves both comforting and claustrophobic. When Leo and Lark Parrish arrive at their vacation home with their parents, their mother’s idea of a quintessential Maine getaway seems like both a blessing and a curse. Lark—a novice novelist—can’t wait to find inspiration at the end of a fog-entombed pier. She’ll forgive her mother for forcing her into this non-negotiable holiday, but only if she can find her muse among a lapping, rocky shore. And while being trapped in a house with no means of escape is the last thing Leo would consider a good time—especially with parents on the precipice of divorce—he can’t help but wonder if maybe the change of scenery will help him shake off the chains of sadness brought on by the death of his closest friend. But what starts off as a relatively benign family trip quickly turns menacing. Leo finds himself face-to-face with what feels like his best friend reaching out from beyond the grave, and only hours after they arrive, Lark begins to receive sinister texts. And then they both see it: someone lurking in the shadows of their rental home. Someone who has been expecting them despite the Parrishes being a thousand miles from home. #aniaahlborn #sarahglennmarsh #thegirlsarenevergone #darkacrossthebay #bookrecommendations #themedrecommendations #yahorror #horrornerd #horrorstories #ghoststories #hauntedhouse https://www.instagram.com/p/CTWfWJurfFo/?utm_medium=tumblr

𝕋𝕙𝕖𝕞𝕖𝕕 ℝ𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤-- Have you ever lived in or visited a supposedly haunted place? The first apartment we ever lived in had a pentagram on the back of the door that had been painted over. As atheists, my husband and I joked about it and how creepy it was. My skepticism about the reality of hauntings does not preclude me from enjoy books featuring hauntings and haunted places. Today on the blog I'm kicking off my three post series featuring @ericawatersbooks and her sophomore novel: The River Has Teeth with readalikes for the book The River Has Teeth is infused with a creepiness around the woods and marsh where the story is set. So of course, I had to recommend one of my favorite creepy woods novels: Strange Grace by @tessa.gratton Head on over to the blog to see what other books and themes comprise my list and check out the synopsis of Strange Grace below! SYNOPSIS Once, a witch made a pact with a devil. The legend says they loved each other, but can the story be trusted at all? Find out in this lush, atmospheric fantasy novel that entwines love, lies, and sacrifice. Long ago, a village made a bargain with the devil: to ensure their prosperity, when the Slaughter Moon rises, the village must sacrifice a young man into the depths of the Devil’s Forest. Only this year, the Slaughter Moon has risen early. Bound by duty, secrets, and the love they share for one another, Mairwen, a spirited witch; Rhun, the expected saint; and Arthur, a restless outcast, will each have a role to play as the devil demands a body to fill the bargain. But the devil these friends find is not the one they expect, and the lies they uncover will turn their town—and their hearts—inside out. #themedrecommendations #bookrecs #bookrecommendation #bookrec #ericawaters #strangegrace #creepysetting https://www.instagram.com/p/CRrZAHjL5cG/?utm_medium=tumblr

𝔹𝕠𝕠𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤-- What was the last book you recommended? Today on the blog, I'm sharing themed recommendations based on key themes from Light of the Midnight Stars by @renarossner One of the themes that I highlighted was the idea of displacement and diaspora. Salt to the Sea by @rutasepetysauthor features multiple characters who must flee their homes and they all converge on the dock of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Head on over to the blog to see the other themes and books I chose and check out the synopsis of Salt to the Sea below! SYNOPSIS World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, many with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer to safety. Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people—adults and children alike—aboard must fight for the same thing: survival. Told in alternating points of view and perfect for fans of Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning All the Light We Cannot See, Erik Larson's Dead Wake, and Elizabeth Wein's Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity, this masterful work of historical fiction is inspired by the real-life tragedy that was the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff—the greatest maritime disaster in history. As she did in Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity and love can prevail, even in the darkest of hours. #bookrecommendations #themedrecommendations #salttothesea #rutasepetys #immigrantstories #renarossner #thelightofthemidnightstars #sistersofthewinterwood https://www.instagram.com/p/CN0Dhd9rvRd/?igshid=7qi8w1cigg9f
