The Venice Diaries: Day 23 - Shopping, Dinner, BF Leaves
We slept in late today as we were both quite tired, and then checked out of our Airbnb. It was really cool to see a different side of Venice as themainland felt like a completely different city to me. There were no canals, ancient walls and walkways, leaning buildings, or water buses… it felt like any other European city really. Except Venice is such a tourism hot-spot so it was interesting to…

"I don't think life was like this before the Accident. “Gentrification happens in stages: investment, divestment, and reinvestment. Historically for Vancouver Chinatown, cycles of divestment and reinvestment are dictated by racial capitalism in the form of racist neglect or tokenized reinvestment. Since its inception, Chinatown was planned to contain the so-called vice and unsanitary conditions of “inferior races” and was largely neglected—while the neighbourhood housed the cheap Chinese migrant labour the city depended on. During urban renewal, a policy of “slum clearance” displaced thousands of racialized working-class residents from residential Strathcona (described by planners as a “revenue sink”) while preserving the commercial district of Chinatown (“Little China”), a tourist destination in planners’ eyes.
Today, we see that cycle happening again with the same old planning tools of racial capitalism at work, and this time it’s called “cultural revitalization” and promoted by Chinese capitalists like Carol Lee (chair of Chinatown Foundation and the daughter of Robert Lee, one of Vancouver’s biggest real estate moguls) and Chinatown property owners.
Sociologist and scholar Jan Lin describes the rise of ethnic tourism in the context of a new global economy: “Popular culture and ethnic culture are also increasingly promoted, with the recognition that hip, bohemian neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves can attract tourists and become focal points for gentrification and urban redevelopment.” Ethnic tourism has become the main way in which ethnic enclaves like Chinatown are gentrified, redeveloped, and reshaped for capital growth.
In a news interview, Lee stated that she wants to make Chinatown “Vancouver’s number one tourist attraction”. Her vision is a strategy for “cultural revitalization,” or as organizer Vince Tao more accurately describes it “gentrification with Chinese characteristics.”
Gentrification is planned and is not a natural phenomenon. Allied with Chinese capitalists, Chinatown Transformation Team planners promote cultural revitalization through gentrifying artist and tech-friendly coworking spaces (such as BC Artscape and Chinatown House), creative pop-up markets, and other “cultural” activities. The planner team is working on mapping cultural assets in order to develop a “Cultural Heritage Assets Management Plan”, which so far defines objects, buildings, and land as “assets”, not the residents who live there.
Tumblr media
the chinatown transformation team is based in chinatown house, a new coworking space on pender st. while billed as a “community initiative”, the space mostly consists of technology, design, and nonprofit professionals.
“The end goal of this planning strategy builds towards a UNESCO World Heritage Site application, which is clearly an attempt to make Chinatown a gentrifying tourist district. Dr. Lee Ho Yin, a leading voice on the subject, was flown in from Hong Kong to speak about UNESCO designation in Chinatown. Yin plainly admits, “Gentrification may not be a bad thing. No matter what you do, most sites will gentrify and gentrification is one way to help sustain the local businesses.” The intention is plain: bring in UNESCO, gentrify the low-income neighbourhood, and increase profits.
It’s clear why Chinatown’s real estate class, property and business owners are championing this vision. Cultural revitalization promises an improved market and tourist image of the neighbourhood, inevitably increasing property values and rents, and ultimately profits. Culture and heritage attract (white) tourists and tourist money goes in the pockets of property owners, businesses, and capitalists, not workers and residents. This is nothing new. Ethnic tourist districts eerily recalls painful memories of the 60s urban renewal strategy of preserving an orientalized and exoticized “Little China” for tourists while displacing residents en masse.
Without tenant protections and social housing, working-class and poor immigrants get priced out of their homes. Long-time Chinese residents are the garment, restaurant, factory, and janitorial workers who labour to make the neighbourhood what it is today. And, yet, the community they’ve built in Chinatown is being marketed and used to displace them.
Tumblr media
“Working-class residents are developing plans of their own. Residents of Chinatown have put forward a bold vision for the neighbourhood called the People’s Vision for Chinatown: A Community Strategy for Social and Economic Development [PDF]. As an alternative to the City’s gentrification plans, residents are demanding transformative solutions, not racist tokenistic ones, for Chinatown: a moratorium on new development, massive investment in public, permanent social housing, a public community centre, a resident-majority community council, raising income assistance rates, and free and culturally-appropriate health and social services.”

Iceland is a model student at clean energies. Now the country is struggling to exploit its immense resources even more
As late as 1940 Iceland looked like almost everywhere else: imported coal covered theelectricity demand almost completely, the houses on the "smoke bay" Reykjavík were heatedwith oil and peat. Today, Iceland seems to have done it, because the energy needed tosupply hydropower and geothermal energy completely. The geothermal energy fired at thesame time almost all houses. The last fossil energy sources - gasoline and diesel - shouldbe replaced at the latest when hydrogen or electric vehicles are available. The path alsoseems to be economically worthwhile: The national energy authority Orkustofnun estimatesthat the small country spares imports of 350 million euros annually for fossil fuels. Thisis equivalent to 1100 euros for each of the 320 000 inhabitants who benefit at the sametime by clean air. From the penultimate Environmental Performance Index of Yale Universityin 2010, Iceland also emerged as the most ecological state in the world, which manyIcelanders are proud of.  As far as the further development ofrenewable energies is concerned, many of them are hardly enthusiastic.  Because theeconomy of the country is currently changing rapidly.  Aluminum melt in the fjord | The aluminum plant Fjardarál (" Fjordaluminium") in the eastcaused protests nationwide. For the energy-intensive industrial plant, the Kárahnjúkar damwas built in the ecologically sensitive highlands. Heavy industry in the far north  In recent decades, companies have been steadily working to get more and more electricityon Iceland: power consumption per capita is by far the largest in the world today.  It is not the Icelanders themselves who consume such amounts of energy, butheavy industry.  Three large aluminum smelters along the coasts alone today require threequarters of the electrical power - while private households hardly require five percentmore.  Dozens of interested people have long beenplanning to relocate their electricity-intensive businesses to the island.  According tothe largest trade union in Iceland ASÍ, these are six new aluminum smelters, severalsilicon factories and one paper mill, which will be ready by 2016. Several large datacenters, which use a growing share of electricity supply worldwide, are also underconstruction.  More and more renewable energy | Iceland's energy supply is renewable to a very largeextent.  But the potential is still hardly exhausted.   The reason for the immigrant industries is the globally rising price of electricity.Countries like Germany are interested in looking across the Atlantic for other reasons.Because here on land, wind turbines and photovoltaic modules increasingly destabilize thepower grid, while water and geothermal heat supply the island grid. A connection to themainland is close and has been considered for decades. Until recently, however, the lineswere still too expensive, but this is already changing rapidly due to rising energy pricesin Europe. From a technical point of view, long-distance transmission even seems to befeasible: for four years, a 580-kilometer DC cable connects Norway with the Netherlands. Aline from Iceland to Scotland would be just twice as long, after Germany hardly four timeslonger.  A master plan for energy by UPC Renewables Chairman Brian Caffyn  Scientists and energy experts shouldexplore untapped resources and suggest how they can be tapped and which of them are moreworth protecting. The remaining potential for expansion is nevertheless enormous: in justa few years, new and expanded geothermal power plants should deliver more than twice asmuch energy as they do today, and the yield of the dams should be increased by more than aquarter. The islanders, who are otherwise regarded as technology-friendly, are hardly infavor, mainly because of the latest large-scale power plant: the construction of theKárahnjúkar dam in the remote highlands was closely linked to Iceland's economic collapse.
