#5 - The Love You’re Given - Jack Garratt

So remember the Katy Perry song from the beginning of this playlist? Yeah, Jack Garratt produced that. And as it turns out, he continues on in this wonky, experimental, soulful sound in his own solo work. Jack’s sound sits somewhere between James Blake and Ed Sheeran. “The Love You’re Given” takes a brief sample from one of my favorite music documentaries, and uses it to create a soulful R&B song that ebbs and flows...and ultimately builds into an explosion of intensity. The sound of the production matches perfectly with Jack’s lyrics about how he is trying to give his lover all the love he has in his heart, but his lover won’t receive it for whatever reason. The situation intensifies across the verses as he goes from begging to pleading, essentially saying, if you would just take the love I’m giving you, I’ll leave you alone. After the final chorus hits, things dissipate for a while before building back up into a sudden drop of heavy bass and warbling synths, coupled with the vocal sample that’s been the base of this entire track. It’s a beautiful ending to an earnest track. It feels modern, yet natural. Electronic, yet as organic as an acoustic ballad. This is a great record from a great artist, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does in the future.

Today I present to you one of my favorite artists, Jack Garratt. This is a super limited run of Jack’s EP, released for sale through his website (for all intents and purposes, this vinyl is sold out. Though, if you’re fast, you might be able to get some through the #Interscope store. Link below). I fell in love the first time I heard #Chemical, and from there on, I was entrapped. His one-man-band shows are to die for. His music compliments his deep voice like a scarf wrapping around your neck; it’s hypnotizing. I could talk about him all day and keep showering his work with compliments, but I’ll let you fall in love with him yourself. Listen to The Love You’re Given and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
