Before this weekend, I hadn’t listened to this album in maybe 14 years. It reminded me of some painful points in my life. After an exhausting, freezing, rain-drenched couple of hours queuing in the rain, it became all worth it when Suede lit up the little room at the top of HMV Oxford Street. There were some sound problems to begin with and I think Brett's voice needs a rest for a bit before the big tour, but the show was once again full of power, energy and connection. Brett came to us again and again, danced around so enticingly and played a set mainly from The Blue Hour, a few from Night Thoughts and Bloodsports and also some from Coming Up! 

Finally, my phone did not run out of memory. Here is my other favourite from The Blue Hour, 'The Invisibles'. While Wastelands is probably number 1 for me and it offers hope, this song makes me quite sad even though it has crystalline, elegiac beauty.

This is not your “usual ‘coke and gold discs’ memoir”. So the author says, and it’s true. And so, I wouldn’t like to do your usual book review either. Because this heart-wrenching and beautifully written story deserves so much more. I often feel like reviewing someone’s work is an exercise of sheer vanity. Why vanity, you’d ask? Well, because, usually, the reviewer’s voice is so loud that the actual voice of the author/band/film-maker being reviewed is hardly heard. Isn’t that incongruous? 

Anyway, I wouldn’t want to think that my opinion counts for anything, but since you are here, I’ll just say one thing: read this book. Whether you are a Suede fan or not, it will make you laugh, smile and even burst into tears. Or maybe not. Because, you know what? One can only make a review based on one’s feelings. ‘Coal Black Mornings’ made me feel a million things. Most of them, good. And even though my life and Brett Anderson’s life have nothing in common, while reading it, I felt like we were kindred spirits in over a 100 pages. Or more. 

Fortunately for me, I happened to see Suede live again -after 15 years, and in Berlin, no less!- right after I finished it, and that made the experience a truly outworldly one. So I can proudly say that I am back in love with Suede (not that I had ever stopped loving them, but life often makes a point of making you forget your passions, if only momentarily). And so now I am in love with them again, -I already said that,- and with this book, and with their new album -you cannot, I think, separate ‘The Blue Hour’ from ‘Coal Black Mornings’, because, in a way, they are one-, and even with the coal black mornings of my youth. Because, see, I had them too.

Suede Collection....I’ve decided to post my favorite artist collection for start of each month. I’ve already done one last month with Placebo so this would be my no.2 post. Got most of the singles and all the full length albums. Missing most of the deluxe (2CD+DVD) remasters but I think this is enough.
