Happy 32nd Anniversary to The Little Mermaid film! I can not express how much this film has meant to me, not only from my childhood, but when times in my life that felt impossible to get through that helped comfort me and reminded me to keep hoping. As many of you may know, last year was a particularly difficult time for me.

But I felt that in such an awful time I was able to make something and The Little Mermaid became an emotional touchstone of mine. Before 2020, I wouldn't have dreamed of having many Ariel dolls, let alone any other characters from the movies because animated characters are so incredibly daunting for me to attempt but I do have to thank this film for helping me extend my skill set.

And I genuinely hope that my own work has inspired others to try doing customs like this and to attempt projects that seem implausible to do. Because the one thing I learnt from The Little Mermaid is doing the things you dream of, even though it's scary and honestly horrifying at times, it's better than never doing them at all.

Here's my customised Alice In Wonderland doll rerooted and repainted to look like Melody from The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea. One of my favourite direct to video Disney sequels, I haven't revisited a Melody custom in awhile mostly because finding decent kid doll bases is kind of difficult, and I was hesitant to use the Disney Store Alice because Melody has a distinctly Ariel type face. But after some bullying from my friends and after finishing Eilonwy I figured Melody as a doll would be fun to add to the group. So I rerooted her in black synatra from @CustomdollhairAU and gave her an acrylic paint repaint. Surprisingly the most difficult part was painting in teeth since the Alice head has really defined lips and it would have been easier to give Melody a closed mouth. I've taken an unexpected doll break and have been feeling a bit nervous on how to break the seal on coming back since I didn't feel quite justified in taking one asides from general feelings of fatigue from a continually extended state lockdown with no real end in sight so far. And honestly, my rational side knows a lot of creative people go through this, but it has been quite hard to be able to just start back up again without some self flagellation. But hey, it's #worldprincessweek and I can't let that go by without at least something, even if I feel creatively burnt out. Here's my Disney (official) Princess line up. I don't have a Merida because I don't like Brave as a film in the same way I think all 2010s Pixar films are lacking something or other. With every animated character doll I do watch the film and maybe related media several times to really understand what elements to use on a doll, and while I do think Brave has a strong act 1, it's absolutely a chore to sit through the rest of the film. I don't hate the film, and I am okay with not liking the film enough to include a doll of her either. Here is my rerooted and repainted Simba Toys Ariel to be Vanessa from The Little Mermaid. I am pretty happy with my current Vanessa Prime doll but I really wanted another one since I got this Simba Ariel who had super damaged hair and I figure another Vanessa couldn't hurt lol. I actually really dislike giving my custom dolls super exaggerated expressions so I've been resistant to making a Vanessa doll with an extremely evil expression. Aliexpress tends to have a lot of deadstock floating around so I was very surprised to see MC2 Project dolls on there. One of them was the Masquerade Bryden doll which had an interesting "casual" mermaid outfit that I wanted for one of my Ariel dolls. Surprisingly my "kawaii" eyed Ariel was the one I thought it looked best on cuz the shells suited her eyes from the blue and pink tones.
