Kansas

Even six years after moving away, my favorite thing to tell people when they ask where I’m from, is that I’m from Kansas. I love that the immediate follow up questions is always “Like Kansas City?” And I love getting to answer that no, I’m from the real Kansas.

I grew up in a small city in northeastern Kansas, called Manhattan. Also known to those who live there as The Little Apple or MHK. It’s home to Kansas State University and its adjacent to Fort Riley. It also happens to be one of my favorite places in the world. Growing up in Kansas, the only thing I ever wanted was to be away from it. I thought it was so unfortunate that I had to be born in Kansas when I could have been living so many other cool places. But looking back, I’m so lucky that I got to grow up in a town that gave me so many opportunities.

When a lot of people think of Kansas they think that its flat or The Wizard of Oz. They don’t realize how much beauty there is in the state that lies in the middle of our country. Manhattan lies in the middle of the Flint Hills, one of the few tall grass prairies that remains in the United States. Every time I think of it, I picture the colors of home and can smell the fresh air.

I feel fortunate to have grown up living next to something that is so beautiful peaceful and untouched. 

All anyone ever knows about Kansas is that Kansas City is nearby, that it has a terrible governor and that its flat. They don’t hear about the Flint Hills or of all of the really cool things that Downtown Manhattan has to offer. 

It holds such a special place in my heart as the place where I grew up and I when I tell people about it all I really want is for them to love it just as much as I do. There’s so much more than the crazy redneck and farm stereotypes that always get projected upon it. The people that I know there and the people that I met growing up are some of the nicest, most caring and genuinely kind individuals. There’s something that I really love about being in a place where, even if you don’t really know the person, they’ll still treat you like they’ve known you for a lifetime.  

Maybe I’m biased because its shaped so much of who I am and because I love it so much, but I think everyone should visit Kansas because I know you wont regret it. Even the Tribune wants you to go visit. So go check it out and enjoy it!
