Today I am thankful for my City by the Sea 🌊 . People give Sunderland a lot of shit. Heck, I give Sunderland a lot of shit. It was the place I held 18 years of anger, heartbreak, anxiety and fear and those things always seem a lot easier to remember than the family, friendship, excitement, opportunity and love I was also in abundance of. This city feels left behind. It is underfunded, under-utilised and under appreciated. Many of its people are stubborn and seem set in their opinions, traditions, and their legacies. It makes positive change excruciating when the opportunities for which seem to always come too few and far between.😫 . But this city, MY city, has made me who I am. Because of this city I understand loyalty, I understand community, I understand the beauty of the world. I am empathetic, I am determined, I am protective, and I am strong. I can stand my ground, I can think on my feet and I can keep going no matter what. You can be all of those things and not come from my city, sure. But I wouldn’t be me if I hadn’t. 💖 . Sometimes I feel guilty leaving my city, but I know my city will never leave me. I guess I am Sunderland - til I die.
