Problematic Femslash Ship Tournament - Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despaircest - Junko Enoshima x Mukuro Ikusaba (Danganronpa Series) VS. Shoka Sakurane x Ayano Kamachi (Neo The World Ends With You)
Info and propaganda under cut! This will not be spoiler-free.
Problematic elements for Despaircest:
twincest, abuse, murder, toxicity, codependency
Problematic elements for Shoka x Ayano:
Age gap/underage ship. Shoka is 16 and Ayano is 19. Additionally, it's common to see them in a sisterly relationship, so some consider it to be incest. Lastly, they tried to kill each other (Ayano under the influence of brainwashing and Shoka in self defence) with Shoka succeeding in killing Ayano.
--
Propaganda for Despaircest:
MUKURO HAS A CANON CRUSH ON JUNKO. SHES ALWAYS FUCKING BLUSHING AROUND HER AND SHIT. THEYRE SO GAY. JUNKO LITERALLY SAYS SHE KILLED MUKURO BECAUSE IT WAS THE MOST DESPAIR SHE COULD EVER FEEL. SHE FUCKING LOVED HER TOO!!!!! - Twincest for the win! Junko also constantly abuses/tries to kill Mukuro and Mukuro is totally Into it! Plus Junko literally ends up killing Mukuro so yknow doomed yuri. They are so toxic and codependent and when Junko DOES end up killing Mukuro, she gets off to it, and says she wishes she were Mukuro!!! - They're THE incest sisters - Despaircest is soooo dear to me bc I shipped this shit even AS an anti man. Being obsessed w Junko is so entwined w Mukuro’s whole character that you cannot simply IGNORE the incest. Like man I don’t usually like twincest but these two. They are awful. - despaircest propaganda that was too big for the post:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda for Shoka x Ayano:
Shoka/Ayano is, to me, a deeply tragic yuri ship. For one thing, it's unrequited: Shoka canonically considers Ayano to be like an older sister to her. Ayano, on the other hand, refers to Shoka as "my darling:" a term you could use for siblings, but to me, hints at romantic feelings. She named her pet iguana "Shoka" as well, and most importantly, the only time her blushing sprite is ever used is after Shoka thanks her for helping her and taking care of her. They are both members of the Shinjuku Reapers, and start the game as close teammates and friends with a comfortable relationship together. Shoka speaks at length how much Ayano took care of her when Shoka first joined the reapers. Ayano shows protectiveness over Shoka and worries when she gets into danger. Shoka relies on Ayano to show her how to be a reaper. They seem codependent, but at this stage, it works for them. What makes this ship truly toxic is when their relationship falls apart. When the team moves to a new city, Shoka becomes less reliant on Ayano and finds herself at home in Shibuya, while Ayano struggles to adjust to the new city and to Shoka being with her less and less often. Later, Shoka becomes suspicious of her teammates' intentions for Shibuya and leaves the group. Ayano is so distraught at Shoka leaving the team that she willingly infects herself with Plague Noise in an effort to get Shoka to return to her side. When this doesn't work, Ayano lets the Plague Noise possess her, believing that if Shoka won't return to her willingly, she'll have to take her by force. The possession is irreversible, and Shoka is forced to mercy kill her. They get a brief moment together before Ayano is… gone forever. I'll link the video of their final confrontation and boss fight because it's so good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyoa2beYC8A To me, the only reason people don't see them as a potential ship is because of the age gap, and perhaps because of Shoka seeing Ayano as a sister. It's disappointing because Ayano definitely has incredibly strong (possibly romantic) feelings for Shoka. The unrequited, mismatched love is part of the draw for me. I love how tragic it is. Seeing two girls who deeply loved each other's relationship fall apart until they fight to the death… and yet, still loving each other and mourning each other… it hurts so good. I'm submitting this partly because I hope there'll be more content if people get the idea of the ship, because it's almost nonexistent. I'll end it with a quote from Ayano that shows how far she would go to make Shoka come back to her: "You asked me to stay, but you strayed from my side. Never again… I won't let you out of my sight… even if I have to tear you limb from limb… I'll take every last piece of you with me…"

I think what I love the most about Yuri On Ice is the fact that it kinda breaks a lot of clichés and stereotypes we've used to see in movies or even series on the same genre.
The more evident one, and also the one I love the most, is the fact that uses the "me vs me" kind of conflict, where the main character (Yuuri) is also the main antagonist, which is something we don't usually see in commercial media. This and the use of "rivals, not enemies" is what gives me most joy when watching the show, even a few years after its release.
The sports/competition genre in media is plagued with a main character who is mostly bullied by their rivals who think they're better, and this MC has to overcome themselves and prove that they're, in fact, better and stronger than the rivals and usually they beat the others up in a fierce competition that, most often, ends in a magnificent failure from the rivals and gives the MC and their gang the victory.
In YOI this doesn't happen.
Yuuri doesn't win the gold medal. Yes, he does give us a spectacular performance that breaks Viktor's own record, but he doesn't get gold.
Even though we're all rooting for him and his potential engagement with Viktor, he doesn't get first place. But we're not upset with this either. We're happy that Yuri P did get gold despite his struggles and his doubts and his anger. We learn to love every single character (yes, even JJ because he also has his redemption arch) because the show itself shows us that they're all real, with their struggles and their own fears, and makes us, the spectators, closer with all the competitors individually, even if we're not actually watching their competitions (as in the case of the girls, who are also skaters but we never see them skate).
Whilst it is true that we want Yuuri to win his gold medal and be the best and beat the rest and himself -ehem and get his official engagement with Viktor ehem-, we're not completely sad that he got silver. And that's because we also wanted Yuri P to win. Or even Phichit or Otabek, because all of them worked hard to get to the finals and we're happy for them. And it's just like in real life, were we support athletes from somewhere else around the world when they're at a competition and we want them to win gold, even if we don't know who they are or where they come from.
And that's the whole beauty of YOI. It doesn't give us that sickly, toxic relationship between rivals we're used to see in Hollywood movies, and we see that the characters are actually friends outside competition and hang out together when they can, because that's how it's supposed to be in real life. Just because someone else is better at something than you doesn't mean you have to hate them and be mean to them. The positivity of the show is also something to love.
And of course there are a lot of other factors and qualities to remark, but this one, this is what makes me come back and rewatch it over and over again even after actual years of me not watching anime anymore, and it's because it has become more than just a story with animated characters; it has become a whole philosophy in itself, a way of life.
And that, my friends, is what makes a story worthy of being a cult classic, one that I'm sure we will all remember when we're older, and one that will live in our hearts for many many years to come.
Because we were born to make history.
And we are still making history 💙💜

Problematic Femslash Ship Tournament - Losers' Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoka Sakurane x Ayano Kamachi (Neo The World Ends With You) VS. Miyako Hoshino x Hana Shirosaki (Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!)
Winner will go up against Squidcest.
Info and propaganda under cut! This will not be spoiler-free.
Problematic elements for Miyako x Hana:
age gap and possible grooming (miyako bribes hana into doing cosplay for her using sweets; she often takes...questionable photos of her too)

Propaganda for Miyako x Hana:
miyako has a crush on hana from the get-go! hana starts out thinking miyako is creepy but loving her sweets, but gradually starts to warm up to her and eventually considers her someone special to her. even though she's still an unrepentant pervert about her. win for pervert girls everywhere

Problematic Femslash Ship Tournament - Losers' Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Applepie - Applejack x Pinkie Pie (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic) VS. Shoka Sakurane x Ayano Kamachi (Neo The World Ends With You)
Info and propaganda under cut! This will not be spoiler-free.
Problematic elements for Applepie:
They MIGHT be fourth cousins, twice-removed. They never find out for certain, but decide to consider each other family anyway. (Mod note: tame, all things considered, but the absolute fandom outrage over the ship after this episode qualifies it for sure)
