a little bit of an explanation as to whats happened in my life, to keep yall up to date if you wish.

idk really how to start this off, so if it seems a little jumbled & out there I'm sorry!

it's been three years since i left my ex "husband". So by legal standards, no we weren't married. I had a place holder ring. Stayed with him for 9 years. He was emotionally abusive, narcissistic, and isolated me from my friends. Honestly, I can't even put plural for that-- I was "allowed" one friend, and that was the girl who is practically my sister from HIGH SCHOOL. And even then? it was a big to-do if I wanted to spend time with her. I never got to see my mother, who I have a strained relationship with already.

In those three years, I have bought a house (i dont recommend doing what I did. Just.. explore your options.) My situation was that my mother didn't want me living with her anymore and thats fine-- she is entitled to her own space and what not. I'm grown, 30 years old this year, and she has raised me so I get it. I bought this house hastily and to its credit it's a great little starter house for two people. Only issue is, it's small but like I said I just wish I had waited a little bit and shopped around, but I felt the quicker I could get out the faster I could get my cats back! And did.

I've also gotten a new car, a better position at my job (but fuck that place tbqh. grateful for the paycheck but man... 6pm-6am is ROUGH when you are chronically ill.) and....maybe....just maybe... a new partner. I've went from 21lbs to 150 (and that was honestly all in the first year-- I've maintained that weight just about constantly for 2 years running now).

But with new changes, there isn't always a silver lining.

My depression got bad, my anxiety worse, I've developed new health issues such as POTS (thats really fun to have in a warehouse work setting in the middle of summer), seizures (these are non-epileptic), and as of today, chronic hives (and I thought eczema was hard to deal with) on top of my insomnia just absolutely taking the piss out of me. Then one of my moms got into an accident on 4th of july weekend, my co-worker just had to be taken off of a vent because he was denied a lung transplant (guy was only in his 60s if best) & I've fallen out of friendship with what used to be a good coworker (who is now my boss...it's going exactly how you'd imagine lol). Something happened with my partners family, but that's for them to share if they wish.

So all in all 2024 has been absolutely KICKING my ass but I'm still here. I'm sorry for having to disappear for so long, but I do not have the spoons to be here constantly. I am trying to get back into the swing of things, since they're adjusting my medicines and trying to get me on the correct dosages and what not (i've had Serotonin Syndrome & thats' drastically cut what medicines I can have with my mental health, in half.

In short, thank you for sticking with me this long & I hope to come back in full swing eventually, but I'm just slowly trying to chip away at everything and your patience means a great deal! THE TRIAL OF DOMINIC CUMMINGS

Having watched his statement and subsequent questioning from the press live, I now find myself reassessing my previous view of Dominic Cummings’ behaviour. As with everyone else, I didn’t know the full story when it broke, so I made my mind up on the basis of what I’d been told. Obviously some presumptions I made were wrong, but so was the evidence as presented.

Obviously, I have to say that this all depends on whether you believe what he said is true. If he is lying, and especially if it is proved that he made a second trip, then all bets are off.

There are elements of his story where he could have made a better decision, or where his actions seem downright unwise - but I would contend, m’lord, that he was acting in unprecedented circumstances and where his only care was doing the best for his 4 year old son. This is not unreasonable, and it is what almost everyone would do.

Some of his story attracts criticism because he clearly had advantages from the start, advantages that the vast majority of the population doesn’t have. Such as that his parents are very rich and own a large estate on which there are a number of buildings, some of them not being used. It is quite legitimate to get politically angry that some people have more wealth and privilege than others, but that is irrelevant to the debate here. It is more appropriate to a discussion on Class War and Marxism than about rules surrounding a virus epidemic.

THE CHARGES:

1. In taking the trip to Barnard Castle he was very unwise. It was clearly breaking the lockdown rules about visiting local beauty spots, especially when you are a well known and very controversial political figure: he should have known fine well that if he was spotted and recognised it would have led to big trouble. It was a fair drive away, it is like the conundrum I have about visiting Southport or Blackpool. Whether or not I come into contact with anyone, I am breaking the guidelines as they were at the time. He says he didn’t meet anyone at Barnard Castle. He explains why he did the drive. It is credible. However, he didn’t have to do the drive, it clearly broke the rules, he shouldn’t have done it, he should have apologised. On its own I consider this to be carelessness and unthought through - a £60 fine is perhaps warranted, but it is hardly a sackable offence.

CONCLUSION: on this point he is GUILTY of breaking the lockdown regulations. I believe that the story about testing his eyesight in preparation for a 260 mile drive is credible, but I think that in retrospect he will realise that it wasn’t the greatest of ideas. What surprises me is that neither he or the Prime Minister seem to realise that this drive to Barnard Castle broke the regulations. Had he encountered the police there he would have deserved a ticking off and a £60 fine, but I don’t think that he honestly thought he’d broken the rules. On this one, it is up to the individual to decide: my personal view is that he broke the rules but it’s a trifling offence that isn’t sackable.

2. He was spotted walking in the woods. These woods happen to be part of his parent’s estate. He has every right to be there, I’m not sure about the people who spotted him. As long as he was social distancing, he has done nothing wrong, except for being part of a wealthy family. Again though, perhaps he should have weighed up the risks of adverse publicity if he was spotted - NOT GUILTY

3. He drove back to London. He was given medical permission both to return to work and to drive. I can’t see any problem with this - NOT GUILTY

4. He visited his parents, doing something that is expressly forbidden under lockdown rules. In actual fact, if his story is correct, he DIDN’T do this!! He visited an empty cottage on his parent’s estate. If so, his crime is coming from a wealthy family, not breaking lockdown rules - NOT GUILTY

5. It seems that he didn’t put anyone in danger. Maybe the only person he did was the 17 year old neice who volunteered to look after the child, but it isn’t clear that he even saw her and it is well known that young people suffer very little risk from Covid - NOT GUILTY

6. He could have got help in London **which would have obviated the need for the journey. I don’t know, maybe he could, maybe he couldn’t. It isn’t for me or anyone else to say that he should have asked friends or relatives in London: for all I know they may have been completely unsuitable. He had the option of using an empty cottage on a farm in County Durham. It is hardly a second home, and as he didn’t interact with anyone on the way, or whilst there, I don’t see any problem with it other than jealousy about his parent’s wealth - which is irrelevant - NOT GUILTY.

**Of course, the much simpler thing for him to do was for him and his wife to stay at home in London with their child, and self isolate until all had recovered. I’m sure that he could easily have got groceries delivered to his door step, as I have done. If not, I would expect that there are many people in the Tory party who would have volunteered to help. I’m also sure that he could have “worked from home” via a video link. If he was worried about the reporters and rent-a-mob left wingers besieging his house, I’m sure that a nice word with the police from his boss would have sent them away

This is indeed the whole, central crux - and mystery - of the entire matter. It is what everyone else has had to do - it makes perfect sense and avoids all controversy about breaking or bending the lockdown rules. To me, it is rank bad thinking that he just didn’t hunker down and do it - it wouldn’t have lasted long and it would avoided all this stupid controversy.

SUMMING UP: Thus, it appears to me - as long as he is telling the truth - that the only naughty thing he did was to take an unnecessary drive to a beauty spot where he ran the risk of being recognised.

I therefore contend that Mr Cummings should continue to work as Boris Johnson’s chief advisor. People are free to hate him as much as they want, but that is not a matter concerned with the lockdown.

What I would say to conclude is that the government’s handling of the whole story has been utterly appalling. Why didn’t they just come out and tell us all this on Friday night before giving the left wing media the chance for such a feeding frenzy??

POSTSCRIPT

My very good friend Mr Stephen Jones has posed a straight forward question that every single news reporter has missed. It sort of went through my mind too, but I didn’t articulate it. It was his wife who suggested the rather silly drive to “test his eyesight” that ended up at Barnard Castle. Instead of making this silly suggestion, why didn’t Mrs suggest instead that SHE drove?? Of course, that is on the understanding that she can actually drive, but honestly, most people can these days. I totally agree with Stephen, this is the crucial question in the whole saga, and we deserve an answer!!!

Also - another thing that hasn’t been pointed out, but which is clear common sense to me, is the fact that he didn’t have any alternative childcare facilities that could have slotted into place in London, should anything happen to him or his wife. This applies whether there is a pandemic or not, it applies to ANY circumstance where he and his wife, or both, are incapacitated. This seems neglectful in the extreme. I “only” have three pussy cats to look after, but I have plans in place to deal with it, should anything happen to me. The fact that a senior government advisor didn’t have contingency plans to look after a 4 year old with special needs is quite astonishing.

This is a post about weddings, and maybe about life. I was married on March 20. My husband didn’t go to college. I went to a school that in some parts of the country you can brag about until someone else brings up Yale. I graduated with a degree and bad grades that I never put on my resume, and they never mattered, for what it’s worth. (Thousands of dollars. They were worth thousands and thousands of dollars, and they never appeared anywhere but in a text to my parents.) 

My first job out of college, I got because I knew someone. I quit that job. The job that supported me between that job and the next comes-with-health-insurance job was on a boat. It was also because I knew someone. That someone was the boat captain and we were dating. Sorry—we were sleeping together. Is it feminist or very not feminist that he paid me?

Anyway, the next real job I got was because I knew someone.

Only my third job did I get on my own merit. And when I quit that third job two years later on good terms, my boss told me that when he’d interviewed me, he knew that I wasn’t the best candidate, but he liked my attitude. Back then, I wore pencil skirts with pumps.

The next job I got, I also knew someone.

It wasn’t until my fifth real job that a headhunter found me, interviewed me, and hired me. And then, a year after working for that company, I made an internal shift to my dream job because they were small and agile at just 30 people. In the year following, they would hire 130 additional people. Like most people, I have impostor syndrome and work as hard as I can, 80% of the time.

Right, I was talking about weddings. I got married on March 20 at the end of a fire road. Fire roads in Los Angeles, in case you’re not familiar, are dirt and gravel routes that allow fire crews access to open land to fight wildfire. But most of the year, people use them for hiking, dog walking, and bike riding. We used ours for a wedding.

I wrote the wedding script. I’m still not sure if that’s what it’s called. We had our friend Dev ordained through an online ministry service, because for some reason outside of the separation of church and state, your marriage certificate requires it. The script finished with, “I now pronounce you wife and husband,” because I come first. Dev’s wife, our dear friend Halley, took photos. She’s a writer.

What I’m saying is we walked down a dirt path, where I gathered a bouquet I picked from the ground, to have a friend read out loud some words I had written that included jokes about shitting and dogs and crappy houses, to get married in front of just our parents and a writer who was taking photos. I ordered the dress I was wearing from a site called “Lulu’s”. It was $60, and it was beautiful. That was our wedding.

We’ve been married for two months. We just got our marriage certificate in the mail. We’d fucked it up the first time by not writing in that Dev was a “minister” because he isn’t. We didn’t want religion involved in our wedding. Adding it as an addendum later felt fine. My husband doesn’t believe in religion. I believe in astrology only when it tells me my career is going to take off.

My career has taken off, compared to not having one at all. I’ve been reading fewer horoscopes, and I’ve been writing significantly less. I am pursuing a career. My husband is pursuing a dream. He is currently making unemployment dollars. I pay rent and attention to our budget. He cleans the house. Sometimes, I struggle with it all, but most of the time, I don’t. Most of the time the person I love and married picks me up from work, makes me dinner, I read a little, and I fall asleep with him and both our pets piled on top of me. I forget the weight of my ambition when they replace it 

This is the part about life. If your life has the opportunity to be good, let it. We can, of course, complicate things. We can add invitations and seating arrangements and showers. We can add mandatory partner checklists and gender roles and tradition. We can add whatever we like. But we should add the things that make us happy, if we are so able.

When I was young, there were many versions of myself that I pictured. But one that lingered was of a coiffed woman in a penthouse in New York. She made money and nothing else. She married in an art museum in an indigo gown. Her husband wore impeccable clothes, and they went to galas. He had a fancy degree, and a fancier pedigree. I don’t think I ever imagined us together, only imagined him like a check in a box. 

But that’s not what happened, and thank religion. I live in a house with no insulation but a great view in a strange town where you can always hear the coyotes. My husband’s fanciest pedigree is his dog and his kindness. I make money, but I also make art and love and occasionally the coffee. The only thing I would call impeccable is my taste in adoptable cats. Most of my life I imagined all these things I needed to do by an age, by someone else’s standards, by this checklist that never ends. As soon as I got straight A’s, as soon as I got 10,000 followers, as soon as I got that offer, as soon as I, as soon as I, as soon as I, ad nauseam.

As soon as I stopped and felt my legs underneath me, as soon as I stretched my arms high into the sky and felt my spine lengthen, as soon as I noticed how scrunched my face was and relaxed it, as soon as I remembered I could play Spice Girls literally any time of the day I wanted, as soon as I did that, I was happy.

I still get grumpy. I still get greedy. I still envy and boast and posture and plead. I’m still disgusting at times, and not because I eat in bed or use the restroom without washing my hands, but because I’ll see a beautiful photo and purposefully not like it. Because I’ll say something sucks because I wish that I had it. I still get jealous when I find out someone’s household income. I still forget that my income, my income alone, is more than most people in the world will ever make. I still get mad that it takes time to write a novel. I get mad at time, and it feels nothing time and time again.

On reality TV shows, the contestants who are ousted so frequently say something like, “you’ll be seeing me again!” but we never do. They’re forgotten, only to be dragged through the mud by a person making $5 per post on the internet because they were once average looking and are now older. You’ll be seeing me again. It reminds me of businesses trapped behind scaffolding, heralding fresh banners saying, “OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION!” Please don’t forget me. Please don’t let me die. But we are not businesses. We don’t die when we’re forgotten; instead, we are forgotten when we die. We have no mortgages on these bodies but time. 

So I stretch my skin and feel grateful. I don’t own a home. I can’t buy a new car. I don’t have an agent. I can’t beat my old times. I don’t have a following. I’ve never been to a gala.

But I am, at least, open during construction.

Wow, it’s been a month already. I’m … surviving. Mostly. My anxiety bounces up and down, but otherwise I get up every day and login to work. I work a full 9 hours, sometimes a bit more, and log off. I try to eat half-way decently and do something fun every evening. Lately it’s been reading or playing Guild Wars 2. I hop on and off social media depending on my day and/or how I feel. I only leave the house when necessary (because otherwise my doctor would lecture me incessantly). Working remotely has gone better than I thought, and quite honestly I might ask once everyone “goes back to work” if I can work from home a few days a week because it’s been a lot easier on my head and agoraphobia. We use MS Teams, Zoom, and Go to Meeting for everything needing collaboration. Bruce interrupted a call with a vendor last week, not that anyone minded because suddenly everyone wanted to hear all about him. During our departmental meeting last week, Selina stuck her head up behind me and for half a second, you could see her in my virtual background. I don’t think anyone else saw her, but I about fell out of my chair laughing (and thankfully I was muted).

So yeah. Work is OK other than some folks being assholes. I still feel unappreciated, underpaid, and some days a bit overworked. My boss is a nice enough guy, but there’s still a lot of things going on that need to be changed. But I’ll rant about that later. What else? Oh yeah, I got a new roof this week, so I’m happy about that! I bought myself some wireless earbuds for my birthday. I was able to get out for a little bit on my birthday and see a friend, then swung by and saw my folks. I’m still disappointed that I couldn’t go out and celebrate like I had wanted (considering last year’s birthday was very depressing/lonely). But it’s better than I was expecting, so that was a plus!

I haven’t been sleeping all that well. I’ve been plagued with nightmares as of late … more so than usual. It could be what I’m watching as I fall asleep, or my anxiety messing with me. I’m leaning towards the latter. I haven’t been able to go to see my shrink in a while. I’ve talked to my therapist a few times, but honestly I hadn’t felt like talking lately. (which reminds me that I really do need to at least drop her a note and let her know this) I mean, she knows I clam up when I’m dealing with stuff, but that’s what we’ve been trying to correct … my “going quiet.”
