Summary: You and Liam are trapped inside for a cozy snow day

Up-state New York is best known for its tumultuous winters, and today it earned its reputation. You and Liam took one look out of your bedroom window to see that today was going to be a day spent next to the fireplace and next to each other. 

Liam was dressed in the sweatpants he slept in the night before with a loose cream colored cable-knit sweater. He was so effortlessly handsome and his features were the personification of the cabin they called home.

You changed from your nightgown into a pair of thermal black leggings. While you were looking for a warm top you happened to notice Liam left the dresser drawer to his sweaters wide open. This, you took, as an invitation.

As you came bounding down the staircase in a green cable-knit sweater, two sizes too big, you nestled into Liam’s side for a big ol’ hug. 

Liam tended to the fireplace, as it cast a light glow across the room and especially onto your features. He felt as though you were all the warmth he needed to get through 1,000 blizzards. 

As Liam laid on more logs, you collected all of the throw blankets from the linen closet to make the best cocoon for two on the loveseat sofa. 

Before sitting down, you brought out two mugs of freshly brewed coffee, letting the scent waft through the kitchen and living room before you consumed the warm beverages. 

“Thank you, Love,” Liam said as he took the first sip. Hazelnut and vanilla.

You hummed in response to his appreciation. You adore that pet name. 

There was a stack of books on the coffee table. Liam began the next chapter of the novel he reads every night before bed, and you continued your scrapbooking. Both enjoyed the sounds of the crackling fire and the every-so-often flip of a page.  

Within no time, the snow outside had painted the entire lawn crisp white, making the postbox barely visible.

Not wanting to go outside just yet, Liam regaled you with a story he read the other day on page six. Now, Liam is not usually one to gossip, however, the details were more outlandish as he continued.

His deep voice resonated through the room, narrating the celebrity gossip that was making you fall over with laughter. While catching your breath from a fit of giggles, you curl up closer to Liam, finding comfort and stability in the rhythm of his heart beat. 

Liam took this moment to swing his legs up onto the couch, taking your legs with his in the process, settling into a cozy nap. The snow outside was the perfect buffer to the responsibilities of the outside world, drifting you both off into sleep as you dreamt of warmth and serenity. 

You woke up hours later, with the fire almost completely out and the desire to stretch your sleepy bones. Liam nuzzled his nose to yours and basked in the feeling of skin-to-skin contact with the woman he loves. 

You stirred only slightly, prompting Liam to press a tender kiss to your forehead. Your eyes opened and both acknowledged the need to get up. 

You helped Liam get dressed to shovel. Making sure he wore plenty of layers and had not an inch of exposed skin, other than around his face. 

You reveled in taking his hands into yours to put on his gloves. When you reached the final step of zipping up his thick coat, you sealed the completion of the task with a kiss. 

“Do you think I’ll be warm enough?” he asked, mocking the amount of layers you insisted he put on.

“Just don’t stay out there too long. I’ll miss you too much,” you said with cute doe eyes.

As Liam ventured outside to shovel the driveway you decided to show your appreciation for his efforts by making a homemade dinner from scratch.

Liam was always grateful to find any meal you made him warming in the stove after a long day or after extensive yard work. But he was especially happy when you would be vulnerable with him and try your hand at a new recipe and have him be the taste tester. 

“Is it actually good or are you just saying that to spare my feelings,” you would ask after he would take the first bite.

“I mean it. It's good.” Ahh, he could never hurt your feelings. He would lie to protect your heart but never wanted to make you cry.

Luckily you could read Liam like a book and decided to make a soup you knew that he liked for sure. It was a hearty soup made with celery, carrots, kielbasa sausage and soft, thick noodles. 

As you maneuvered around the kitchen your oversized sweater cascaded around you like a flowy dress. You put on a record of soft jazz in the background as you cooked. 

The delicious smell of the soup acted as almost the chime of a dinner bell, beckoning Liam back into the house. 

He returned, with foggy breath from his extended time outside, and was thrilled to see what was in front of him. A warm dinner. A blanket covered couch. Fresh logs on the fire. And a happy wife. 

“You didn’t have to do all of this,” he said as he came over to admire the dining table, as you set it with candles, wine, and the two remaining slices of the cherry pie you made at the beginning of the week.

“It was no trouble. Now sit. Eat. You must be freezing,” you said as you waved your hand for him to sit and be comfortable after working so hard outside so you didn’t have to. 

He devoured his dinner, hungry from his work out and to show you how delicious it was. You were pleased to see him love the food you made with your own two hands. 

With bellies full and bowls empty, Liam outstretched his hand to you.

“May I have this dance,” He asked in his deep raspy voice, as the jazz continued softly.

You did not speak. Instead, you took his hand, stood up, and embraced his commanding body, slowly swaying back and forth as the evening came to a close.

The Ice Road (2021)

The Ice Road benefits greatly from the inherent tension of its premise. By the time you’ve realized this isn’t a good film, you’ve seen enough that you want to know how to ends and keep watching.

An explosion in a Manitoba mine traps 26 miners. Their only hope is for special equipment to be brought from Winnipeg before their air runs out in 30 hours. Hauling the necessary wellheads are Mike McCann (Liam Neeson) and his brother Gurty (Marcus Thomas), Jim Goldenrod (Laurence Fishburne), and Tantoo (Amber Midthunder), with Katka Mining Co. actuary Varnay (Benjamin Walker) ensuring the operation runs smoothly - and safely.

The film’s title refers to the ice road necessary to get to the mine: a cleared path on Manitoba’s frozen lakes that will allow the truckers to arrive in time. The danger comes from the road itself. This story takes place in April, weeks after the roads have been closed for the season. The ice is relatively thin. If the trucks move too slowly, they could break through the surface. Too fast, and they’ll create waves beneath them that will crack the ice. So much could go wrong. You’re anxious any time we see underwater shots pointing at the sky or spot cracks forming. There are more opportunities to sweat whenever we see the miners. Some of the survivors are in rougher shape than others and when bad news trickles in from the surface, people suggest a triage…

There's plenty to keep you invested, particularly with the strained relationship between Mike and his brother, an Iraq War veteran suffering from PTSD and aphasia. Then, writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh introduces new elements to amp up the stakes - some of which I’m not sure make sense. First, we have some racial tension between Tantoo and Varnay - both are prejudiced against the other. It’s unnecessary and makes you feel icky but it’s well-thought-out compared to the conspiracy we discover...

Katka Mining Co. turns out to be as villainous as the Umbrella Corporation. They bribed miners to turn off key sensors and told them they'd be safe. Now the CEO doesn’t want anyone rescued - they'd be exposed. You might as well go from criminal negligence to flat-out murder then. They’re banking heavily on none of the miners having talked about the shady business to anyone and the insurance payout out. This of course means that Varnay is sabotaging the trucker’s mission. I don’t know what Katka Mining is paying but it must be a lot. Getting knocked off a cliff isn't even a deterrent from doing his job. What a trooper! Even if villains disregarding their safety for no good reason isn't a pet peeve of yours, you'll roll my eyes at how over-the-top the film gets

I should’ve seen the twists coming - they’ve been done before many times in other movies of this caliber. I didn’t because I held onto hope The Ice Road would be good. It isn’t. Exciting, yes. Good? No. (July 7, 2021)

The Ice Road★★ 

It’s always good to have films rooted in the realities of life and human nature. The kind of stories that show how special close relationships are and in keeping them for as long as possible. Sadly, it’s the only solace you’ll get from this film. When miners get trapped in a cave, and only ice truck drivers can save the day. Ice Road is an action-drama story about ice truck driving and the dangers surrounding it. This film reminded me of the American reality TV Series Ice Road Truckers. Only, this had a horror atmosphere with memorable graphic deathly scenes. This movie is a fictional story based on a dangerous real-life occupation. It had the potential to be better and not just pass through as a distraction film. Not to mention having Liam Neeson and Laurence Fishburne together was exciting until the movie started. Generally, it’s a heavy film with an aim too many to deliver a clear message. Consequently, a low expectation and an open mind will aid in enjoying this film more than you anticipate if you have spare time.

Every time one of Liam’s 3 action movies per year comes out I talk about how much I love him and how I’ll watch every single one as long as he keeps making them so I’ll just cut to the chase. This one is fairly predictable but still builds up enough suspense to find enjoyment in it. One thing I don’t like in these types of movies (Liam has done this in a few recently i.e. THE COMMUTER) is when the protagonist has to talk out loud to themselves to explain what they just figured out. We don’t need that. Stop talking down to the audience. I’m confident that the majority of people can piece the things they were just shown together, we don’t need it spelled out for us. Laurence Fishburne is another actor that automatically gets me on board knowing very little about the rest of the movie, but I felt he was underutilized here. It was downright disrespectful. Amber Midthunder is a star to watch though.
