Stitches and Sentences

Happy Sunday all! I am off to my private school's open house today to sing the praises of our freshman English program so prospective parents will continue to pay my salary. Given the early hour, here is an early post.

I made lots of progress on my army of Baz bodies this week, but I can't preview most of what I am doing because several of the dolls are inspired by currently unpublished chapters of ongoing fics or in-progress art.

I can share Bubble Baz, inspired by my own fic. Annie beat me to creating a version of Baz in his hoodie (I love him!). Below is my version of Bubble Baz, cozy and in the felt! More pics here.

Although at this point I have made 28 dolls (and counting), I've kept very few them---just Shep and Penny (pictured above). A significant part of the joy of doll-making for me is gifting them to fandom friends. With that said, I didn't realize what a cool feeling it is to see your character embodied and be able to keep him! I love Bubble Bazzy so much already. He slept on my pillow last night.

In fic land, I struggled to find a snip of The Boy Next Door that I could post this week that wouldn't contain major spoilers given how Chapter 6 ended. I think I managed it by redacting some of the text. Simon POV below the cut.

SIMON Baz: [redacted] I re-read Baz’s text several times. Words always go a bit fuzzy for me, but this is unprecedented. After all, it’s not like letters generally rearrange themselves into blatant contradictions just for a lark. My head is swimming with questions. I ring Baz immediately.  “What the fuck, Baz? Is this a joke?” I demand.

Good morning! Thank you @monbons for the tag! I'm still buzzing from @palimpsessed's remix of my COC artwork, it's truly stunning!

The kids are back in school and the house is quiet again. It was a little harrowing at first because I was behind on sewing Littlest Purple's uniform, so I was sewing the next day's outfit the night before. Towards the end of the week, I caught up and eventually found the time to draw.

My CORB concepts are submitted and I can't wait to see what everyone has come up with! After a pivot on my artwork for chapter 3 of Time Will Lie Down & Be Still, I'm plugging away and I'm much happier with the results. Here's a peak of the good old Baz Pitch Sneer™ and the beginning of chapter artwork!

The tiniest bit of a tattoo is gonna be visible on Dev, so did I design a whole ass tattoo? Of course I did! @blackberrysummerblog and I threw around some ideas and I also grabbed some inspo from the fic, Sword of Mages Tattoo. If you're curious, I used coriander, oleander and camellias.

This really made me want to get another tattoo, so maybe I'll get off my butt and finish my Vegas vampire concept

“But then you were there and all-“ Snow wiggles his hand at me and makes an odd face.

“Fucking, you! Like, you know what you look like right?”

I cock my eyebrow in question.

“You’re like-” he breaks off into a weird grunt and flaps his hands at me. “Like I dunno why you like to dress other people. You’re a bloody model. You look like that bloke from the band all the girls went nuts for in school, except I’m pretty sure he hit his girlfriend so he’s a fucking cunt, but you- you’re like if all the fittest arseholes were also super fashionable and really caring but you kind of hide it by being a bit of a grumpy fuck, but like in that way that’s super cute - you know like that cat that always looked well pissed? You’re like that cat if the cat was a smokeshow. And not a cat. Cause that’s weird.”

My cheeks burn - what is he saying?

“And I think I just like… it was easier to be a bit of a dick than to think about what it meant that you made me all weird and twisty.”

“Twisty?” I whisper.

Hello hello! Thank you to everyone who's been tagging me over the last couple of weeks. It's been a feast of good CO WIPs and a struggle, the best kind, to keep up.

I'll post Chapter 9 of Basil Pitch's Diary on Friday. I'm super excited, but also a little 😬 because Chapter 10 is only half written and I really won't want to leave you hanging after 9. Time to go balls to the wall!

Meantime, here's a Ch 9 snippet. Baz is still out dancing with Dev and Niall. Tags below the cut.

“Care to dance?” asked the man already dancing with me. His accent could have sizzled ants on the pavement.  Fucking hell. He was posher than me. I nodded curtly, and we began.  Puh-puh-puh-poker face puh-puh-poker face. I ignored Dev’s voice in my head. (“Poke ’er face? I hardly know ’er!”) Something about my dance partner’s movements told me that he too learnt to waltz before he grew pubic hair. I felt my body mirroring his, spine straight, elbows out. His movements became even crisper in response. At this rate we’d be minueting to “Bad Romance.”

Today I’m sharing another snippet from my increasingly un-secret COBB. I’m putting it under the cut for sleazy harassment and non-con touching. I censored a name with ** just to keep certain details under wraps for a bit longer.

** slaps his hand over Dev’s mouth and pulls him close, grinning in the rear view mirror.

“Take your paw off my cousin right now, unless you’re prepared to lose it,” I suggest, my voice low, dangerous. Dev’s eyes widen slightly, and then he gasps in a breath as ** pushes him away, laughing.

“You’re the good one, aren’t you, Basilton?” ** teases, leaning forward. His seat belt isn’t buckled, and if Dev’s was, I’d seriously consider slamming on the brakes. If ** went through the fucking windscreen, the world would know no great loss. “Always living by the rules, doing what you’re supposed to.”

He’s touching my hair now, coiling a strand around his finger. I’m less offended than when he was mauling Dev, but it still makes my skin crawl. “You don’t know anything about me,” I say softly. Least of all how far I’ll go for the people I love.

“You have an aristocratic profile, Basil,” ** coos, his breath warm on my neck. “I can see the family resemblance.” He takes another glug from whatever cheap fuckboy liquor he’s got wrapped in that paper bag, and then I grimace when his lips brush beneath my ear. “I could be feeling very into cousins tonight.”

Injured Six Sentences

I haven't had the inspiration to write since I'm dealing with an injury that's entirely paused my life, and I can't enjoy the things I used to anymore since they required moving and I'm resting. So I wrote a fic last week. Today I posted a second chapter:

Simon's hand catches one of the tears sliding down my face. When he holds my hand with both of his, his skin is wet. Another tear drops on my arm. I wipe my face with my available hand. "Oh, don't be upset," the doctor says. "On your way home, you can go and buy a few books to read this month in the comfortability of your couch. But I insist on the surgeon. I have a couple of contacts..." "Thank you a lot, doctor," Simon says to stop him. "We'll be in contact."

Doctors that don't know how to deliver bad news should reconsider being doctors. That shit fucked me up.

Welp, I wasn't going to post today...but then I realized that the final chapter of Heart in the Well will go up before Sunday, and that'll render the excerpt I carefully picked out obsolete by then. So I scrambled to pick bits from my other stories just so I could post this one excerpt. Go me!

The good news about Heart being done? I've got a new WIP plotted out that I'm super excited about, but I wouldn't let myself write anything until one of my WIPs finished. So next week or the week after, you should see the first words from that fic, a very very angsty Watford era canon divergence.

From Saving Simon Snow: 

I shake my head now, thinking about it. I’ll just have to keep close to Simon, or at least, as close as he’ll allow me. At least my vampire anatomy gives me an advantage there; I can listen to what’s happening with Simon from three rooms away (I won’t, unless it’s a matter of his safety. It’s a gross invasion of his privacy otherwise) (fortunately, I had to learn to tune out the chatter of my peers by my 2nd year at Watford, or I would have gone mad). 

From the Heart in the Well

He looks back at me and then frowns. “Well, come on then,” he says, impatiently. 

“Come on, what?” I say, exasperated. The water’s up to my breastbone now, and I’m starting to feel a little panicky, so my voice comes out higher pitched than I’d like. 

Now, he rolls his eyes. “I need your tie,” he says as if it were obvious. It was not obvious. “Take it off, please.” At that, I shiver a little. I never thought there’d be a day where Simon Snow would be telling me to take off my clothes.

From Snow Fox: Penny, learning you can’t go home again (especially if you’ve signed on with the Snow Fox)

I step onto the road and walk briskly towards the house I grew up in. I can tell when I’ve been noticed. Several heads swivel my direction, and the murmur of conversation in the camp ceases. I keep on as if I haven’t noticed however. As I draw closer, I nod distractedly at some of the boys nearer to my path. They don't nod back. They’re watching me with narrowed eyes and I shudder internally. What do they see when they look at me?

Years from now, if I, for some odd reason, try to explain how my first time having sex felt, I won’t be able to. There’s no describing it.  I’m planning to get a degree in words, for fuck’s sake, but right now, all language has left me, sailed back to England probably. I’m left with caveman grunts and desperate whines. Every particle of sensation in my body has gathered between my legs, and every atom of will I have left is devoted to an attempt to meld my body with his. I’ve almost succeeded–we’re nearly one creature now, moving in frantic, panting unison.

I know he’s been looking for me. I know he’s probably forgiven my great sin. He shouldn’t. Forgiveness requires that the person who receives it is contrite, is sorry for what they’ve done. 

I’m not sorry. I’d do it again today, if the circumstances were the same. 

Even being estranged from the only person in this world that I care about is still better than the permanent separation that would result if we were rescued. 

I believe that we’ll be friends again someday. Some day when the pain in my chest and stomach have dulled. And that day is worth waiting for.

I’m left gaping at where he just stood. It’s suddenly clear to me how much of his vampire abilities Baz has been hiding, because I was looking right at him. 

I never saw him move. 

All I know is suddenly he’s above me, and my arms are above my head and prisoned to the bed by his hands clamped around my wrists. I’m so stunned that I don’t even struggle. 

His knees are on either side of my hips, and he’s staring down at me like I’m his next meal. 

From my COBB project:

I know I should be worrying over tomorrow, and what my team will face out there. And I will be worrying over that—tomorrow. Tonight, I’m far more worried about the hours ahead. Hours of, once again, sharing a room with the only man I’ve ever loved. A man who’s never looked at me as anything other than a posh prick. 

That’s my fault, of course. It could have been different, all those years ago, when we first met at Watford Uni. I was excited, back then, to meet my roommate. Excited, and nervous. I freely admit I’ve had a privileged upbringing, and this would be the first time I’d ever shared a room. 

My childhood was mostly lonely, so I didn’t mind the idea. I’d thought it’d be nice to always have someone nearby to talk to. 

Of course, everyone knows how that turned out.

Six Sentence Sunday

I hope that this spring (or autumn in the southern hemisphere) brings you all the very best things.

One of the unexpected things it will bring is a Simon Snow Godzilla!AU. How many people are both Carry On and Godzilla fans? Let's see a show of hands. Anyone?

Ah well, my brain is a silly place and this story was coming whether anyone wanted it or not.

“If you haven’t guessed, I’m an American,” Shepard Love said, winningly. “But I love Japan. It’s always been my dream to come here.” Peni didn’t need to be told. There was something so American about him. He smiled too broadly. He gestured too much. His accent was terrible. And most of all, he didn’t seem to be bothered that she was ignoring him, so that he was left holding a conversation alone.

That post about how 40k words is classified as a novel got me thinking: how many people in the Simon Snow fandom have written not only a novel, but a longer novel than the source material?

Please note that, while I could probably get the data for what authors have written more than one/all of the books composite, this is mainly focused on the lengths of individual works. I used the Carry On fandom tag on AO3 for searching, since the Simon Snow and related fandoms tag has one fic that would place, and it’s a Fangirl fic, not a Simon Snow fic and AO3 is where most of the fics seem to be posted anyway.

First, we have Wayward Son, clocking in at roughly 92,000 words. While this is the shortest book in the series, that’s certainly not a small number. Despite this, our fanfic writers have gone above and beyond for a grand total of 48 fics surpassing WS in length. Of those 48, 38 are marked as complete, so the other 10 have the chance to rise passed that to our next book. Any Way The Wind Blows is the longest in the series at around 173,000 words. Here, there are a whopping seven fics that are longer than the source material. Again, we have two unfinished works in this count. Bonus points for two fics that were completed before AWTWB was even announced for being really on top of the ball. Finally, there is the longest fic in the entire Simon Snow fandom. “Woundrous and Mystical” by @philaet0s is 383,000 words long. This fic falls just shy of the total composite word length for the series, 397,000. The fic with the best chance of surpassing this (based on current word count and incomplete status alone) is “Between the Lines” by @thehoneyedhufflepuff, which currently sits at 207,000 words.

Stitch Sunday

I've been back at work for a week and am already exhausted. The beginning of the year is always brutal (this one more so because I am training a new teaching partner), so time for anything outside of school is hard to come by. BUT! I was determined to finish BunBaz, so may I present ...

No Trauma Bun Baz!

Ready for the fall season, this bun is rocking his favorite sleeveless tee in the pumpkin patch. He was sipping on a pumpkin mocha breve earlier, but the photographer didn't capture the moment. He might play some pick up footie later, although Uggs aren't the best footwear...

After a long day of taking perfectly posed pictures for his Holiday cards, BunBaz heads home and is ready for bed. He loves his striped and collared PJs (only the best for this bun!) and his Paddington keeps him company all night long.

In all seriousness, I had a blast making this bun for the lovely @bookish-bogwitch. (If you missed my earlier post about him, he speaks!) I made the witchy tee based on inspiration pics Em sent over. All other clothing and accessories are American Girl Doll cast-offs, either repurposed or tailored to fit.

In other doll factory news, Rainbow posted the SnowBaz worry dolls I gifted her at the Slow Dance signing (last slide). I know the real artists in this fandom get reblogged and reposted all the time, but this literally made me cry when I saw it! Especially because these little guys were the first set of dolls I ever made in early-May. It blows my mind how far I've come in just a few months.

I hope to keep getting better and tackling more complex projects in the months to come. This fall alone I will be keeping busy with a possible COTTA collaboration with the amazing @iamamythologicalcreature. The idea, if it pans out, is super cool! Thank you @you-remind-me-of-the-babe for the tag! Drawing has really gotten me through the week. I’ve clung to it like a lifeboat and it’s been a small comfort that at least this can go right. I finished my COTTA artwork earlier this week and I've mostly been working on my CORB and COBB projects.

I wasn't sure if I had it in me to do Christmas cards this year, but I figured I should use this as an opportunity to spread some joy. Inspiration struck and I've plotted out all of my carving layers, so now I'm just waiting on the blank cards. Hopefully, I can have something from that to post on Wednesday.

Today I'm sharing an anxious plea for reassurance + a snippet of chapter 9 of Basil Pitch's Diary, posting June 7. Below the cut for spoilers and anxiety.

<ANXIETY> I'm working on chapter 10 now and friends, it's slow going. I still love this fic with all my heart, but chapters 1-9 I had mapped out more or less scene by scene months before I started posting, and before writing most of them. Writing them was like novelizing a movie I'd watched in my head a countless times.

For the rest of the fic, though--Ch 10-13--I had only broad strokes figured out. I knew the very ending, and a handful of key emotional beats along the way, but the connective tissue was basically "Collect Underpants ... ? ... Profit."

I've now plotted the rest out in reasonable detail, with help from the extremely kind and insightful @facewithoutheart and @thewholelemon. But I am a plotter to the core and it feels much scarier to be writing a story I just made / am still making up than one that's been living in my head for years.

Also, you guys: Chapter 9 is really fucking good. I'm really proud of it and excited to share it. And also scared that the rest of the fic won't live up to the promise of all I've set up. This fic is my baby and I just really want to nail it.

Intellectually I know I'm just swinging on the creative-confidence pendulum, and that future me will be able to write as well as past me. These doubts are just intrusive thoughts, skittering around my head like the mice that live in my walls. Harmless, but such a nuisance. </ANXIETY>

Anyway! Here are some sentences of Chapter 9, which, did I mention, is really good. Baz is finally going dancing with DeNiall.

“So, cousin. What’s your strategy?” I just raised an eyebrow and gestured at myself. My shirt was a perfectly cut navy so sheer that it read as cobalt over my pale skin. Climbing my chest were embroidered red and pink roses, between which you could clearly see my nipples. I’d changed out of Oxford cloth at Fiona’s. (I didn’t tell her I’d stopped in Blackfriars to drop off my grandmother’s furs and my grandfather’s Dickens.) Through my sleeve you could also see my mother’s wand holster, which my father now insists I wear whenever I leave the house. He’s also looking for a second dog. Something more territorial than Rusty, whose lick is worse than his bite. After the numpties he spent a week teaching me defensive spells. His skill surprised me, though it shouldn’t have. Once, when I was small, someone tried to mug him as we were leaving a theatre. My father didn’t panic or capitulate, just calmly kneecapped the man with a vicious Why me, why now.

Baz sucks on the side of his thumb and I have to look down at the platter between us to stop myself from jumping on him. It’s a familiar feeling, but I used to think it was hatred that was bubbling up under my skin every time I glanced at him. I thought it was righteous anger driving me to get my hands on him at all costs, compelling me to push and pull at him. I wanted to drag him to the ground and shove my face in his, pinning his body with the weight of my own.

Merlin, I’m an idiot.

I have been rotting since writing creativity has been low for me lately, BUT I did write something. And posted it:

He’s waving the lazo around him, above him, and he’s so beautiful doing it. The circle created by the lazo becomes bigger and bigger and then he’s jumping inside it! Once, twice, three times! The public goes insane. I go insane. Baz’s smile is blinding. He’s as proud of himself as he should be. He’s come after rehearsal sad about not being able to do what he just did, placing his head on my lap because he feels like a failure. Right now, he’s exhilarated. His entire being is pulsing from ecstasy.

YES, I made SnowBaz mexican and Baz is dancing on a charro suit, looking hot and talented.

Yesterday was Mexico's Independence Day (today too), so I wanted to take the opportunity to share our culture with the fandom:)
