The Handmaid's Tale is the book written by Margaret Atwood and tales the story of a dystopian world where a totalitarian Christian government controls the population by turning fertile women into maids for sterile wealthy women to manipulate the population. The message is about the division of church and state, misogyny patriarchal societies.

Wendy Hallam Martin & Julian Clarke edited the pilot of the TV show. One of my favorite moments is just a simple cut between a scene where Offred - Elizabeth Moss character is captured and put inside a van, the shot is a POV of her looking at how the guards close the two doors of the back, the shot is night time and dark, the cut happens when the doors are shut and then there is another shot of Offred looking to window in a fancy room, the camera is behind her, there is an intense sunlight coming thru the window.

This is a very impactful cut, with powerful sound

So, this week Elisabeth Moss posted a teaser trailer for season 4 of The Handmaid’s Tale which ends with a whopping “2021″ -- for now, I’ll just have to rewatch the trailer until I know it word for word.  

If you’re reading this and haven’t seen the show I suggest that you get the 30-day free trial that hulu offers and binge watch all three seasons. I say this because: 1.) I can’t believe you’ve never seen it 2.) I support staying home and watching TV to slow the spread of coronavirus #stayhome! 

It took me about 2 years to begin watching the show with a huge push from my aunt. She said around season 2 I’d be throwing my remote at the TV; while I didn’t throw anything, I did understand why this show has all the hype. 

A quick synopsis for you all (I promise I’ll try not to spoil anything for you, but at this rate it’ll be a bit difficult...)

The story revolves around what used to be modern day Boston is now, Gilliad. The United States government was overthrown, the constitution was suspended and the USA turned into a completely new society - a society of which seems like the 1600s. To put it this way, the characters speak in bible verses from time to time, women aren’t allowed to work, read, or write (wtf?!), and the women in red cloaks... well, they’re only used to have babies for women who can’t have them. 

The show is filled with controversy and I love a good debate. As a woman watching this show, I get angry, I get sad, and frustrated. Then, I pull myself together and say, “it’s just a show.” But, then I think, what if it isn’t? I think that’s why the show pulled me in 47 meters deep. The issues that arise feel similar to what the POTUS thinks of the world, but hey, to each his own.

Eu estendo os meus braços para ele, como um fantasma ao amanhecer. Mas ele se vai. E sou deixada aqui. Gostaria que está história fosse diferente. Gostaria de mostrar uma versão melhor de mim. Em uma história diferente. Talvez uma em que não fosse tão fraca e indefesa.
