Happy Birthday ♉️ to Robert Smith @thecure 🖤 Although he deservingly became a teen idol heartthrob and a pop icon in the 80s, I never lost interest in his music with all its array and range of styles from the post punk and power pop first album Three Imaginary Boys with The Cure released in 1979 which was critically acclaimed with mostly positive reviews with the exception of NME. However, Robert Smith seemed displeased with the album at the time. I enjoyed his short stint from 1982 to 1984 as the lead guitarist for Siouxsie and the Banshees which consequently impacted his style towards a predominantly darker direction of sound evident on the fourth album Pornography (1982) which was not well received at the time it was released. He has said, “Before that, I’d wanted us to be like the Buzzcocks or Elvis Costello; the punk Beatles. Being a Banshee really changed my attitude to what I was doing.“ I especially loved the short lived side project/band The Glove (1983). Albeit there were already seeds of a darker sound planted in their music like the single “A Forest” from the second album Seventeen Seconds released in 1980 which technically put them on a very early trajectory of gothic rock. The following album Faith also retained that element which became more apparent on Pornography. Disintegration (eighth album) is a favorite of mine. He along with The Cure have undoubtedly been very influential on many artists. I got to witness him play with The Cure on August 31st of 2019 before the pandemic and look forward to their next concert… 🖤⚡️🦇
