OKAY SO!!!!

ATLA: Firelord Ozai was like... the Least Evil person between Sozin, Azulon, and Iroh. I might even through Azula into the mix. Ozai inherited a war that was already well on its way toward being won for an entire like 97 years befere he ever even took the throne. Sozin and Azulon did way more damage than he ever even had the time to do. And Iroh personally led the 600 day siege against Ba Sing Se, killing god knows how many people in the process. Ozai was never in the military; he never led or even fought any battles of his own. Add that up with the fact that he was no doubt raised by a monster, and like... Ozai was small potatos compared to some of the other members of his family. 

I have always felt certain that Iroh would have never straightened up his act if not for the death of his son - the fact that he had to experience firsthand the very same grief that he had inflicted on countless other families. 

And as for Azula, I can cut her a looooot of slack because of what was surely not a mentally healthy upbringing, but still... homegirl had some psychopathic traits that I don’t think were 100% to blame on her upbringing. Probably only like 70% to blame. The other 30% was just her being a crazy ass motherfucker, basically. 

I think Ozai basically only did the thing that he thought was expected of him as firelord; the thing that he was led to believe was the only thing that mattered. Win/finish the war at all costs. I don’t think he had any concept of why he was doing it other than that he was Supposed To, and I don’t think he had any idea what he would do after the war was over. 

I see him as a very tragic figure who was only “evil” because that’s who he thought he had to be. 

And now for LoK: 

I don’t think LoK was the steaming pile of shit that many die-hard ATLA fans seem to have thought it was lol. I conceded that it ~wasn’t as good~, but like, I’m not really in the business of comparing shows in the first place, even if they are related to one another. 

I think LoK was solid. Not always exceptional, but solid. I think it opened some very interesting doors, but didn’t always have the resources to actually walk through those doors and close them behind them. LoK’s biggest shortcoming, I think, wasn’t bad writing or bad ideas. The ideas and writing I think were all pretty fuckin fantastic. I think the issue was budget and time, and I think they were too ambitious for the resources they had to work with. LoK had like 3 times the main characters that ATLA did (literally, I counted). Each main character had their own plot/arc, along with the main plots, which were layered and nuanced and wonderfully complicated. But they had to squeeze alllll of that into like 12 episodes per season.  Episodes that were only like 22 minutes long. Compare that to the 22ish episode long seasons of ATLA, which had way fewer main characters, way fewer character arcs to deal with, and a much more streamlined Main Plot, and it’s no surprise that ATLA was a lot more polished and evocative. 

LoK would have done well to simmer down and choose ideas that were much less complex so that they could actually tell the kind of sensitive, well-executed story that everyone expected. But I think they very much had a “go big or go home” attitude about it, which I also admire and respect... they tried to bring their vision to life with limited resources, and fucking hell if it wasn’t a valiant and commendable effort. It didn’t work out as spectacularly as some would have liked, but like... the end result wasn’t horrific or anything lmao. It was fine.

a) hi it's wiggly it's just tumblr being stupid per usual, b) this will sound awkward and mushy but i am so fucking proud of you. you have been so consistently working so hard to get healthy. i know that it might not seem like a great victory in the day to day but from that outside perspective i can see the miles and miles and i am absolutely blown away by it. i know it is hard work, excruciatingly hard work, but you're doing it anyway. >

and i am so proud of you for keeping at it, for picking yourself up and trying again despite everything. you have done SO MUCH growth and so much fighting. i can't wait to get my copy of the zine, and i think you can be incredibly proud of ORGANIZING THIS WHOLE AMAZING PROJECT, on TOP of the strides you are doing to get better!!! I AM SO PROUD AND I KNOW YOU CAN AND WILL WIN!!!!!!!

thank you so much wiggly, i love you!! you have given me so much support over all these years and i couldn’t be more grateful. it was also your encouragement that led me to create the puzzle box zine and now it’s about to be a book i can hold in my hands. 

i wish i could have expedited my recovery faster, but don’t we all. and i know recovery isn’t linear so i’m gonna try not to get discouraged along the way but I feel like I’m doing much better than I had been. thank you again ♥

ive been using an alternative chair but it still doesnt make it much better because i havent got a damn desk to put anything on so im just hurting everything even more i fucking hate grad school

naw, i think i gotta sticker to stickers/decals; it's a folio style case which means it can turn into a stand, so i want to keep the bottom flat (and the case is stiff/hard and wouldnt lend itself to sewing)

also a small part of this i think is that america is just too big a place to support a single cultural identity. even though i’m white, i say i’m “southern” over being “american”. i have more in common with people from, like, ‘rednecky’ parts of the UK, than i do with people from california, in some respects, lol. 'american’ is just TOO BIG OF A CATEGORY, so that may contribute to your only weakly associating with it. (for a tiny pinch anyhow.)

that makes sense, too. Idk, I just feel so embittered any time I hear someone talk about ~Americans.~ Whether it’s white americans talking about other americans, or people from other countries talking about americans, the context nearly always conveys that they’re really only talking about WHITE americans, be they in Georgia or California or North Dakota or wherever.  People only really use it to refer to one type of person in america to begin with. Everyone else gets specified or hyphenated. No one ever seems to use “American” to actually, literally, simply refer to “anyone who lives or was born in the US.”

honestly when in doubt the most gender neutral professional outfit: white button down, slacks. it’s professional standard for boy type people, it’s professional standard for girl type people, you get out of wearing a tie or needing to wear things that are particularly restrictive or form-fitting (keep both shirt and slacks fairly loose, but maybe iron them)

i do not own these things. that is the problem.

Honestly whenever I have a post that becomes Accidentally Popular, I just immediately use the notification blocker on xkit so i won’t ever have to see what kinds of unnecessary nonsense people start tacking on to it. :P
