Hey folks, a couple weeks ago I was tagged by @dweemeister to list my ten favorite films. I think this is about as close as I can get if I’m allowed to make exceptions for series being put under one pick. In addition to listing them I’m supposed to write three things that I love about each movie.
The films aren’t really in any order though they are sorta grouped along similar lines in terms of when I viewed them/how they make me feel/where I rank them in quality.
I’m gonna tag a few folks to see if any of you want to play along. Since I’ve been working my new job I haven’t been on here lately that much, but I miss you all and I’m curious what any of you think.

Star Wars Trilogy
1. It’s probably the single biggest piece of media I consumed in my formative years, it meant so much to me as a kid and those feelings are still strong. 2. The otherworldy setting is one of the best in all storytelling but the story itself, a distillation of old legends and archetypes, is really what makes it so great. 3. Luke and Vader’s fight in Return of the Jedi might be my single favorite moment in any film. It’s one of the earliest concrete memories I have of watching movies as a kid.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (EXTENDED!!!!)
1. It’s just an incredible story. Huge in every way with all these characters who you learn to love. In the giant conflict that dominates the story the best moments are usually small conversations between two characters you care a lot about. 2. The sheer scale of these movies and their flawless execution is one of the most staggering achievements in film history. And the score, holy shit. 3. Middle Earth is the most impressive fantasy world ever created and just getting a slice of it in the films made me an addict.
Alien
1. Maybe the best sci-fi AND the best horror movie ever. It’s so good it’s the best in two different genres. 2. When I’m trying to fall asleep I ask to dream about anything except for the Xenomorph. 3. Sigourney Weaver.
The Thing
1. Uhhhh also maybe the best sci-fi, horror, or sci-fi/horror movie every made. 2. It doesn’t have a huge cast or big ideas or an epic scale, but it’s made so well and with such care that it dwarfs any blockbuster Hollywood movie you’ll ever see. 3. The best effects I’ve ever seen.
The Godfather
1. I think this is the best film ever made. If art can be perfect this is my candidate as a perfect piece of art. 2. Like Star Wars and LOTR, every frame of this movie is seared into my brain and is completely iconic. 3. Godfather II is also 10/10.
Once Upon a Time in the West
1. Before I settled on The Godfather this is what I considered to be the best film ever made. 2. Ennio Morricone’s score is a triumph, the only thing that I think beats out Howard Shore’s LOTR score. 3. An amazing cast where Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda are overshadowed by Claudia Cardinale AND HER FUCKING AMAZING CLEAVAGE!!!!!
Blade Runner (watch the Final Cut)
1. Ok maybe this is the best sci-fi movie ever made. 2. My favorite movie aesthetic, the visuals of this movie are just incredible. 3. I’ll let you know when I don’t tear up when watching the “Tears in the Rain” monologue. It hasn’t happened yet.
Apocalypse Now
1. A bloated mess of an epic that outdoes itself every time I watch it. 2. The cost of violence, the futility of warfare, the grotesque lengths men will go to hold power over others, the horror, the horror. 3. When The End by The Doors comes on and...
Dr. Strangelove (Or How I etc. etc.)
1. Most smart movies aren’t comedies and most comedies aren’t smart. This movie is smarter and funnier than basically any movie you’ll ever see, and it’s about Cold War Politics. Unbelievable 2. It’s a short movie, maybe 90 minutes long. The first maybe five minutes are normal, then it goes off the rails, then it gets INSANE. 3. Kubrick.
The Night of the Hunter
1. An unbelievable oddity in the film world that is finally getting the recognition it deserves. 2. More than any black and white movie I’ve seen, this film is just incredible to look at. The cinematography is completely stunning and the stark imagery sticks to you forever. 3. Robert Mitchum as Reverend Harry Powell is the best screen villain I’ve seen.

So there you have it. I hope my weird mixture of elitist and popular movies doesn’t scare any of you away, though if you’ve been following me this long you’re probably used to it.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a couple other films in a different world.
I’m a huge fan of Ken Burns’ documentaries and I just need to at least bring them up here. Some people like documentaries and others very much do not. I’m one of the people who are absolutely blown away by Burns’ colossal docs. They’re in a league of their own.
The pictures are from The Civil War, Baseball, and The War. All are landmark documentaries in the genre. I’ve seen each one of these at least five times. I don’t want to add up the total hours, it’s gonna be embarrassing.

I think Mindy Kaling summed it up perfectly when she said “You’re so weird about spoilers. If you’re so obsessed with TV (or film, in this case), why can’t you keep up with it in a timely way?”
