The End of October by Lawrence Wright was a #botm add-on. “A deadly strain of flu starts in Indonesia, moves to the Middle East and eventually covers the planet. Scientists everywhere race to find a cure and develop a vaccine. Families are decimated and economies are shut down. One man from the CDC, Dr. Henry Parsons, is desperate to find clues to this disease and get back to his family. But will any civilization be left...” This book feels a lot like reading/watching the news. Wright includes lots of epidemic history - to the detriment of the story. If you like lots of overexplaining you may like this. If you’re not a fan of man-splaining, you might want to read something else. There were some good reviews so I had high hopes. There was potential. I would’ve like to see what Crichton would do with this. There were some unrealistic outcomes but Wright needed a hero. Wright was not afraid to kill some characters to make a point. The ending was a little bit of a let down. One of those - “Is that it?” I found myself speeding up the audiobook to get to the end.
