Last night, I took the chance to rewatch Alex Proyas’s #thecrowmovie on the big screen at @plazaatlanta, and the film reasserted why it had the impact on me that it did in 1994. This is a visual and sonic experience that suits itself beautifully for the theatrical venue, as Proyas and cinematographer Darius Wolzski shoot and light Alex McDowell’s sets in a way that feels as monochrome as black-and-white, making the colors that do shine through (primarily, reds) have even more of an impact. The editing and camerawork is a visceral exercise brought over from music videos that works in concert to an all-time great soundtrack of metal and alternative songs, and Graeme Revell’s haunting score. At the center of it is Brandon Lee’s final performance as the resurrected Eric Draven, but there are so many actors (especially Ernie Hudson, Rochelle Davis as Sarah, Michael Wincott, and basically everyone in a big role) who have little moments or emotional beats they play perfectly. When the film goes into bigger shootouts, it feels very cinematic and impersonal, but when Eric is up close, exacting his revenge, or Top Dollar and his cohorts bring their victims in to their violent tendencies, the film lands like a punch to the gut, and not just because of the tragic irony of Lee’s death during filming. This is something none of the film’s sequels- “City of Angels” (compromised by post-production meddling that negates what’s another great musical experience), “Salvation” (though underrated), and “Wicked Prayer” (which is just awful)- nor the TV show (“Stairway to Heaven”), were able to replicate, probably because they weren’t fueled by James O’Barr’s pain, Proyas’s vision and Lee’s passion, and set to a soundtrack that had all three of those things in spades. ⚰ 𝕸𝖆𝖐𝖊𝖚𝖕 𝕸𝖔𝖓𝖉𝖆𝖞 🌧 Last Saturday, May 11th, I had such a grand time celebrating the 25th anniversary of 🖤 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕮𝖗𝖔𝖜 🖤 that I wore an inspired look the next night as well! So today I'm posting both looks. ✌ The traditional Crow makeup was done with @bennyemakeup magicake black & white. I had to layer with lots of hairspray because tbh I was scared of melting in the rain! 😬 The second look was done by combining my regular @makeupforeverofficial full cover with @illamasqua white foundation.
