Good news: It's time to talk about suicide. Sounds grim? It's not. Talking can save lives. Surley that's worth it? This excerpt (words in the image) is from today's newspaper The Courier-Mail. You may have noticed that I have a personal interest in suicide prevention. Decades ago, my pregnant mother died from suicide leaving 10 children behind. The ramifications are devestating. Aged 11, when mum died, I didn't grieve. How can you when you're told to 'stay strong', and once buried, your mother is not spoken of again? Bewildered, rudderless and motherless, I stumbled through life. I am not alone, still today MANY are shattered by family suicide. Perhaps you are too? Media restricts reporting. Journalists avoid you. Yet suicide numbers increase. Is suicide the final taboo? This UK appointment is a good start. As is the excellent work an Oprah Winfrey Ambassador, Chris Lowe is doing in the wake of her son's suicide. In Hudson's memory, across the US, this brave bereaved mom educates stadiums of teens on suicide prevention. When my memoir Juliette's Angel: Death Desire Destiny was released, many hadn't realized that my mother died from suicide. Even then, conversations stalled. Suicide IS difficult to talk about. It's time. With the UK's bold lead, let's change the conversation so people are unafraid to talk about suicide. "Charles and Camilla are here," Johnny said one morning recently, lowering The Courier-Mail. Sipping a smoothie, my eyebrows arched. Royals! Here in Brisbane? Fancy that! I LOVED Princess Diana, didn't you? How devestated were we all when she died? Somehow, Diana's son grew up without her and Charles and Camilla went on to lead a pleasant life. My mind raced. "I need to talk to Charles about what Wills, Harry and I have in common..." Johnny didn't react. He's used to me saying stuff like that. But how could I approach royalty with bodyguards and crowds swarming? Snatching the newspaper, my eyes scanned the pages - His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will meet locals in Brisbane's botanical gardens TODAY. Thoughts swirled as I showered: What could I say to Prince Charles? Should I courtesy? How should one dress? Pulling on a frock and a blue sparkly hat, I pursed my lips and applied red lipstick. Armed with flowers plucked from our garden and bound in a rubberband, I slid into our Toyota and drove off. Perfect! Now all I needed to do was talk to Prince Charles. How hard could that be? Last night I headed to Avid Reader Bookshop, West End with my friend Esther. After parking a few blocks away we strolled down rainbow colored streets. Cradling a glass of red, Esther and I took our seats in a room. I had no clue what this was about. Esther texted me earlier saying come to a book launch, so I did. Susan Johnson, Senior Journalist at The Courier Mail led a conversation with Mandy Sayer, author of Australian Gypsies Their Secret History. Good title I say, I'd never heard of gypsies in Australia. Have you? Both women appeared relaxed, like they'd done this before. Or maybe they are professionals? Mandy said there are many myths. Gypsies don't steal babies. They have enough of thier own. Gypsies are clean. Gypsies keep close knit families. Usually marry young. Late teens, I think. Because of their supportive lifestyle suicide is unheard of. Well! Looks like we got it wrong. With escalating depression and anxiety in general society, suicide numbers are rising. Maybe we could learn from these misunderstood, maligned gypsies.
