Wild West AU

Lady Margaret Carter nearly resigned herself to a lifetime of ball gowns and boredom after accepting a marriage proposal from her dull but attentive suitor Fred.

Until a cryptic letter arrives from her adventurer brother Michael, who left years ago to travel the world.

To her parents’ scandalized horror, Margaret runs off to try to find and rescue Michael, whose letter suggests he’s in some kind of trouble and in America somewhere.

While crossing the Atlantic, she is approached in an ungentlemanly manner (read: hit upon) by an American business tycoon. Utilizing some of the fisticuff moves that Michael taught her when she was a small girl in case any young man ever got fresh with her, she punches him in the nose.

As they’re trapped on the ship for weeks with no escape from each other, it’s the start of a beautiful friendship. She doesn’t want to tell Howard her real name out of worry that he might know her family somehow, so she uses her childhood nickname, Peggy.

By the time the ship docks in New York, Howard has agreed to help her look for her brother – he’s going out West anyway.

AND OFF THEY GO – Peggy, Howard, and naturally, Howard’s manservant Jarvis – by train and stagecoach and horse.

Along the way, she is separated from Howard & co, and nearly robbed by an outlaw gang called the Howling Commandos. She challenges their leader Dugan to a wrestling match AND WINS. They decide to take her under their wing and start teaching her to ride and shoot.

Howard meanwhile is frantically looking for her because oh shit HE LOST HER, she’s probably dead of exposure in the desert already.

Of course when he finds her, she’s wearing pants and riding a horse and casually wearing a pair of six-shooters that she won off someone in the gang (probably not Dugan, he’s figured out to be careful by now) in a poker game. Howard is so proud.

I haven’t quite figured out how to incorporate the rest of the SSR gang into this, but trust me, they’re around. :D
