More from my aviation multiverse where the BAe-146 was used by more airlines than what happened on our timeline. This time, it's Ozark. GO GETTERS GO OZARK! In March 1972, St. Louis-based Ozark Air Lines began to use De Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otters on passenger services between Springfield, Illinois, and Chicago's lakefront Meigs Field in competition to a similar service started by the commuter airline Air Illinois. Ozark's services only lasted one year due to financial losses primarily due to high crew salaries- Ozark's pilot contract did not have provisions for proportionally lower wages for flying smaller aircraft. It was one of several attempts by local service carriers to fly smaller aircraft to smaller markets (it was also tried by West Coast/Air West, Frontier, and Texas International as well. Suppose Chicago Meigs Field became something like today's London City Airport instead of getting bulldozed in the middle of the night? Suppose Ozark's original Meigs Field services stayed viable and by the 1980s, Ozark used the quiet STOL capabilities of the BAe-146 to fly into Meigs Field? In our alternate history, Ozark would have a fleet of BAe-146s to support services direct into close-in Meigs Field from points throughout Ozark's network. Imagine that sort of Chicago- with commercial air service from O'Hare, Midway *and* Meigs! Imagine the -200s operating denser routes like STL-CGX, DCA-CGX, LGA-CGX or DTW-CGX with the smaller -100 operating thinner routes like DSM-CGX, IND-CGX, or MCI-CGX. This illustration depicts both the BAe-146-100 and BAe-146-200 as they might have looked in 1985 in Ozark's final colors before their acquisition by TWA in 1986. More on my ongoing series of alternate history looks at the British Aerospace BAe-146. I had a prior post showing the -200QC in Alaska's 1980s colors, this illustration looks at if Alaska had operated the -200QCs throughout the state in mixed cargo/pax configurations, here we have one in the airline's prior colors circa 1994. In 1988, there were plans for livery change that would have gone with a stylized mountain on the tail, but it caused such an uproar the change was canceled and "Chester" made his third appearance on the then-new Alaska livery which debuted in 1990. Many elements from the 1980s livery were carried over but in a more modern form- the blue and green cheatlines and the iconic and loved Eskimo tail- only this time a smile on Chester's visage was introduced. The striking title fonts were more evocative of Alaska and its native cultures. As I had mentioned in my prior BAe-146 multiverse post, it's been intriguing to me that a 146QC never took root in Alaska, it would seem like the ideal environment with four engine safety operating over Alaska's vast wilderness. Granted in our own timeline, the Boeing 737-200 Combi filled that role. The second photo is of an airline that did use the 146 in Alaska which I have posted about already, AirPac. This photo is of AirPac's sole BAe-146 on short final into Dutch Harbor (PDUT) at Unalaska. Supposedly the individual standing watching the aircraft arrive is AirPac's owner. I haven't been able to determine the name of the owner, so if anyone knows and can tell me more about him, I'd love to know. Be sure to check us out at www.lajeteepress.com. What if Alaska Airlines operated the British Aerospace BAe-146 as a combi aircraft in the State of Alaska? I've always been intrigued why this wasn't a thing given the BAe-146's field performance. Only one operator used the 146 in Alaska, that was AirPac, and they only used a single example and even though it was a full passenger version, there were collapsible cargo containers in the forward cabin for freight. Alaska opted for the Boeing 737-200C in the role that I have portrayed here in my alternate history illustration of an Alaska Airlines BAe-146-200QC. Swipe left to see an image of the BAe-146QC demonstrator from "Fighting to be Heard: How the British Aerospace BAe-146 Started the Regional Jet Revolution" by Brian Wiklem. Through four different liveries at Alaska Airlines, Chester the Eskimo has adorned the tails of all three Alaska Airlines liveries from the 1970s to today. When the second livery debuted in the 1990s, a tweak was made to Chester- the 1970s Alaskana Icon tails and 1980s liveries featured a stern visage but Chester is now smiling in the current new livery and the previous livery. It’s said that the Eskimo is modeled after Chester Sevek, a reindeer herder who kept Alaska Native dance traditions alive with performances for deplaning Alaska passengers in Kotzebue, Alaska- and that's how the tail logo got to be called Chester. Be sure to check us out at www.lajeteepress.com. We're out to change the paradigm in aviation books with our publishing mission. I'm working on a series of BAe-146 prints to coincide with the upcoming publication of our first book, "Fighting to be Heard: How the British Aerospace 146 Started the Regional Jet Revolution" by Brian Wiklem. This is one of the works in progress, it will be Air Wisconsin's first BAe-146, a Series 200 with the tail number N601AW. Air Wisconsin ended its BAe-146 operations in April 2006 following the bankruptcy of United Airlines. United as part of its restructuring decided to replace Air Wisconsin with SkyWest and GoJet for its regional operations. www.lajeteepress.com #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #LaJeteePress #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #AirWisconsin #N601AW #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #AvGeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CP3icF2hwge/?utm_medium=tumblr

With deregulation coming, Harding Lawrence, head of Braniff International, believed it would be a disaster and Congress would move quickly to reinstate regulation. At the signing of the Airline Deregulation Act in 1978, airlines lined up at the Civil Aeronautics Board's offices in Washington with the intent of applying for route authorities freed from regulation when the CAB dictated who served where. Not one to pass up a golden opportunity, Lawrence instructed the Braniff reps to grab every route they could. Braniff would be holding dozens of new routes that other airlines couldn't compete on with what he believed would be reimposition of regulation. Braniff got dozens of routes. Lawrence embarked on a crash spending campaign to get more aircraft to serve all the new routes as the government stipulated all new routes were "use it or lose it". One one day alone, Braniff launched service to 16 new cities from DFW. Between 1975 and 1980, Braniff doubled in size, becoming one of the 8 biggest airlines in the United States. Braniff's debts shot through the stratosphere as flying 727s on thin routes like DFW-Albany weren't going to make money. Suppose the British Aerospace BAe-146 entered service just a bit earlier than when it did in 1983? Suppose someone stepped up to the plate and restrained Harding Lawrence, but after the route awards of 1978? The BAe-146 with its better fuel economy and lower capacity might have had a niche flying those thin routes to smaller markets than a 727. British Aerospace wanted to big splashy launch customer for the program and Braniff fits that bill. Here's BAe-146-200s in Braniff's Flying Colors. The high wing of the 146 meant that I had to move the Braniff International titles lower down on the fuselage but otherwise my illustration follows the Flying Colors convention of the day. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #Braniff #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ-CY2IBvot/?igshid=1hlnafk422791

Close up of the two aircraft from my previous post. The one on the top is Lufthansa's first Boeing 707-320B, D-ABOV, that was delivered to the airline in February 1963. The -320B version of the Boeing 707 was one of its longest range versions. The lower one is Lufthansa's first McDonnell Douglas DC-10, a long range Series 30 variant, D-ADAO, delivered to the airline in November 1973. Lufthansa named it's large passenger jets after locations in Germany, so the 707 is named "Duisburg" along with the coat of arms and the DC-10 is named "Leverkusen" along with its coat of arms. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #Boeing #McDonnellDouglas #707 #DC10 #Lufthansa #Airlines #DABOV #DADAO #Duisburg #Leverkusen #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CKRKpVAhVZh/?igshid=1coyd9jyxsgfb

More of my alternate history aviation illustrations! What if FedEx had the British Aerospace BAe 146-200QT freighter? Yesterday I posted my artwork of a BAe 146-200QT freighter in the old Federal Express colors, here is the same airframe in the current FedEx livery. In 1994, Federal Express hired the design firm Landor Associates for a corporate rebranding. CEO and founder Fred Smith's only stipulation was that the new colors and logo design be visible and recognizable on a truck five blocks away when he stood on a street corner. A year of research and planning when into the rebranding effort. One of the outcomes was to shorten the company's name to "FedEx" which was already done to some degree. "Federal" didn't quite convey the impression of speed. There were 200 candidate logo designs explored before the current logo which is considered by many in the design world to be one of best with its use of negative space in the typography to show an arrow. While the arrow is considered an overused and formulaic design element, hiding the arrow in the typography for a company whose entire purpose is moving things quickly and efficiently is brilliant. While twenty five years have passed since the rebranding effort, it still looks modern and fresh as it did in 1994. And damn it looks good on the BAe 146. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #FederalExpress #FedEx #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CNdUwirh64g/?igshid=iz9gkqwuuxaj

What if Federal Express got the BAe-146-200 Quiet Trader for routes that the Boeing 727 was too large for but were too busy/too dense for a Federal Express feeder? I frequently will have a number of assorted "just for fun" projects that aren't really destined for print status that I like to do as a diversion now and then. That's how this print started out, as a group of illustrations answering the question of "what if the BAe-146 were more widely used in the United States and beyond?" There always seemed to me to this gap in capacity in the Federal Express/FedEx fleet. The only comparable aircraft to the BAe-146-200QT would be the five Boeing 737-200s that Federal Express operated September 1979 to March 1981. The next size up would be the 727-200s, but Federal Express/FedEx did operate a single 727-100 1979-2001. A size down from the 737-200 would be the ATRs, but those are much smaller aircraft and most are operated by smaller cargo outfits on behalf of FedEx. So in our alternate history, Federal Express becomes a launch customer for the BAe-146-200QT "Quiet Trader" for service into noise-sensitive communities given their late night flight operations. The company became FedEx in 1994. While most QTs in service now are conversions of passenger aircraft, imagine Federal Express taking delivery of new-build QTs! #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #FederalExpress #FedEx #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CNYzQ7MhOgt/?igshid=148fbolo5moua

This is a full page ad that appeared in select magazines in the first quarter of this year on not just the book I am co-authoring with my good buddy Tom Harris called “Titanium Icarus: The Hope and Hubris of the American Supersonic Transport Program” but also the new publishing venture we are launching, La Jetée Press, which will specialize in aviation history. The launch of this publishing venture and the book we are writing was one of the reasons why I joined the Indian Health Service- to give me the time flexibility to devote to something I have long dreamed of doing- writing aviation history books and publishing good quality books from committed authors on aviation history. Back in December 2019 I went up to Seattle and Tom and I spent a whole day digging through the Boeing Historical Archives which was incredible. I could have spent a week up there digging through the corporate archives. Our book “Titanium Icarus” will be focusing on the political, social, economic and technological climate surrounding the Boeing 2707 supersonic transport that was canceled in 1971. We will also be publishing Brian Wiklem’s book on the BAe-146 jetliner and Geoffrey Thomas’s book on the history of aircraft production by Douglas Aircraft Company at Santa Monica Airport in Southern California. Tom is one of the few people I can be 150% unadulterated aviation geek with and it not freak him out. We will sometimes spend hours on the phone strategizing future projects to follow this initial set of three books once they are published. I was once joking with Tom that we are fortunate men to have married alpha females who are supportive of this level of aviation geekdom. Because airplanes dammit. www.lajeteepress.com #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork, some of which will be in our books) #LaJeteePress #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/CNapH33hxdE/?igshid=g8khpm6trfxf

Another work in progress. Spent some time with this lovely gal yesterday evening. Interesting trivia- this livery was designed in-house by Boeing for the 727-200 and aircraft were painted for delivery to the airline but Ozark had to sell the two 727s to Pan Am to raise money as they were coming out of a flight attendants' strike. Ozark liked the new livery so much they used it on their DC-9/MD-80 fleet, only instead of a baremetal under fuselage on the 727-200, they used gray on the DC-9/MD-80 fleet. Ozark really REALLY wanted to try and keep the 727s for the launch of nonstop services from STL to the Caribbean. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #Boeing #727 #Ozark #OzarkAirlines #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/B29vY7hBkgy/?igshid=rledmtsne0oc

Another of my illustrations from 2006 of the proposed BAC/Dassault Mirage IVK or Spey Mirage. ⠀ ⠀ In 1972 the RAF revised the camouflage scheme and markings of its ground attack fleet (starting with the Buccaneers I believe) from gloss paint and red/white/blue roundels to matt paint and Type B roundels (no white) for lower visibility during operations. ⠀ ⠀ The above illustration reflects that change in markings- the colors of the camouflage remained very similiar (if not the same), but the markings reflect the new Type B roundels. ⠀ ⠀ No. 213 Squadron was a Canberra interdiction squadron assigned to RAF Germany- only the squadron was disbanded having ended its days as a Canberra operator. I extrapolated what No. 213's markings would have looked like- the black/yellow roundel bands came from its days in the 1950s as a Vampire operator and the wasp on the tail came from when it operated the Canberra bomber.⠀ ⠀ Weapons load out consists of the AJ-168 television-guided Martel missiles with the distinctive spindle-shaped TV Martel data link pod on the left outboard station. It was around 1973 that the TV Martel first entered service. The data link pod relayed the picture from the camera in the nose of the missile to the navigator who controlled the missile. ⠀ ⠀ The Martel was one of the first European collaborative efforts in the field of missiles- the UK was responsible for development of the TV-guided AJ-168 and France was responsible for the radar homing AJ-37 version. In the real world, TV Martel was used by the Buccaneer force as an anti-ship missile, fired from low level at a range of approximately 17 nm from the target vessel. The TV Martel’s gyro took an agonizing 3 minutes to slave and arm the missile, so the navigator began the process 38 nm from the target during which time the pilot had to avoid significant maneuvering.⠀ ⠀ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #BAC #Dassault #MirageIV #RoyalAirForce #RAF #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation https://www.instagram.com/p/B5mBkOVhmmm/?igshid=1y25y5rqxj5c4

Here's how the proposed Mirage IVK would have most likely looked like at service entry in 1969, wearing the gray/green camouflage on the uppersurfaces with light gray undersurfaces. No. 14 Squadron's blue diamond markings were worn on their Hawker Hunters before they transitioned to the Canberra. In real life, No. 14 Squadron was reformed after World War II with RAF Germany as a de Havilland Mosquito unit in 1947. In 1951, the squadron transitioned to the Vampire FB.5 and then the Venom FB.1 in 1953. The first Hawker Hunters arrived with the unit in 1955 and were used until 1962. The squadron was disbanded that year, but the same day, No. 88 Squadron was renumbered as No. 14 and equipped with Canberra B(I).8s based at RAF Wildenrath. My alternate history illustration is set around the time when the reformed No.14 got moved to RAF Bruggen (which in real life happened in 1970) and got the Phantom FGR.2. The Phantoms were replaced by Jaguars in 1976 and then the Tornado GR.1 in 1986. The squadron flew in Operation Granby (Desert Storm) as well as Afghanistan and Iraq. Today they are based at RAF Waddington with the Beech Shadow R.1 in the tactical ISR role. ⠀ ⠀ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #BAC #Dassault #MirageIV #RoyalAirForce #RAF #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation https://www.instagram.com/p/B48QKBPBFhd/?igshid=1c8mfk9hvr2uw

Markings are for No. 3 Squadron- currently a Harrier operator, but I thought appropriate for the IVK variant as at the time, No. 3 Sqn was a Canberra interdiction squadron assigned to RAF Germany.⠀ ⠀ Weapons loadout shows BL.755 cluster bombs, which entered RAF service around 1972 and replaced air-to-ground rocket pods (SNEBs, I believe) in the area attack role.⠀ ⠀ In the real world timeline, No. 3 Squadron moved their Canberras from RAF Geilenkirchen to RAF Laarbruch in 1968 and converted to the Harrier GR.1 in 1972. Moving on to the more capable Harrier GR.5 and then GR.7, No. 3 Squadron moved back to the UK from Germany in 2000, setting up shop at RAF Cottesmore. ⠀ ⠀ No. 3 Squadron operated with Fleet Air Arm Sea Harriers at sea as part of Joint Force Harrier and flew missions over Kosovo, Sierra Leone, and Iraq. When the Harrier GR.7s were passed on to the Fleet Air Arm with the drawn down of the RAF Harrier force, the squadron moved to RAF Coningsby in 2006 to become the first operational Eurofighter Typhoon squadron in the Royal Air Force. ⠀ ⠀ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #BAC #Dassault #MirageIV #RoyalAirForce #RAF #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation https://www.instagram.com/p/B5JznYzhs12/?igshid=o1dslqlhuk18

Here’s another installment of my BAe-146 “Flights of Fantasy” what-if series of illustrations, this time in US Airways’ final livery. After the 2005 merger of US Airways and America West, a new livery was needed to reflect the operational demands of the high temperatures at the former America West hubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International and Las Vegas McCarran International- the the-current US Airways liver with its dark blue top half of the fuselage for obvious reasons would be impractical at those hubs. The final US Airways livery before their merger with American Airlines incorporated colors from the major predecessor airlines of the new combined operations along with a light gray and white upper half of the fuselage. The gray accents on the after fuselage hearkened back to the wavy gray accents used on America West’s final livery, for example. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #USAirways #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/B3kCDvBByaK/?igshid=1ncgpltw2c5zq

Here’s another installment of my BAe-146 “Flights of Fantasy” what-if series of illustrations, this time in the colors of Hughes Airwest as N146RW, “Spirit of Orange County”⠀ ⠀ British Aerospace apparently did pitch the BAe-146 to Hughes Airwest but I’m short on details as all I’d seen were a promotional model. That particular model had the “Hughes Airwest” titles stacked and on the forward fuselage above the window line, but from an artistic impact standpoint, they were too small there. ⠀ ⠀ I moved the titles down under the window line billboard style to make more of a visual impact. ⠀ ⠀ On 17 April 1968, three local service airlines merged to form AirWest: San Francisco-based Pacific Air Lines, Phoenix-based Bonanza Air Lines, and Seattle-based West Coast Airlines. Having recently been ousted from long term control of TWA, Howard Hughes was looking for a new airline to run and purchased AirWest, the deal finalized in 1970 and the airline eventually rebranding as Hughes Airwest in 1971. ⠀ ⠀ The distinctive livery was designed by Mario Zamperelli whose southern California design firm had been associated with Howard Hughes in the past. The colors were officially called “Sundance Yellow” and “Universe Blue”- at first a metallized PET film coating was used on the windows for added effect, but it was limited in use due to being costly to maintain. ⠀ ⠀ In 1980, Republic acquired Hughes Airwest which created an airline that served more US cities than any other airline at the time, leading to the Republic advertising campaign “Nobody Serves Our Republic Like Republic.”⠀ ⠀ Theoretically this is a double fantasy as Hughes Airwest was already folded into Republic by the time the BAe-146 entered service with Dan-Air London in 1983. ⠀ ⠀ Best nickname someone gave this fantasy illustration- “Minionliner”. LOL, that’s awesome. ⠀ ⠀ #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #thechickenworks (follow this tag to see more of my artwork) #HawkerSiddeley #BritishAerospace #BAe #BAe146 #HughesAirwest #instaaviation #aviationlovers #flight #Adobe #Illustrator #aviationart #aviationillustration #IllustratorCC #Avgeekschoolofknowledge #AvGeekNation #TeamAvGeek https://www.instagram.com/p/B4v0hrohlfq/?igshid=p3rszwhtlrdd
