The group ran through the tree’s, their breath misting in the cold air. They had been travelling for three days after their failed attempt to assassinate the Empress of Man and Beasts.

For the last fifty years that she had ruled, the Empress had somehow hypnotized the entire country to fall in love with her. In truth, she was evil and cruel. At least, that was what their parents had told them.

The leader of the group, after having snuck into the capital, wasn’t so convinced anymore. Everyone had been so genuinely happy, and the few glimpses he had caught of the Empress, she had been so kind.

He shook his head. What he had seen was just a trick of the dark magic she used to enslave people. That had to be what it was. Why else would she have had destroyed his ancestor’s home, and stolen what had been theirs? She had admitted to it! the countless deaths she so proudly bragged about!

They were soon cornered by the predators of the night. Their glowing eyes taunted them as they came ever closer to the group, waiting for the exhaustion of the past few days to finally catch up to them. An easy meal.

Just as their strength was about to fail them, a deafening roar filled the night, chasing the predators away. The group tensed up as the sound of large wings indicated that something was landing nearby. Not to long later, the Empress herself approached the group.

The leader tensed up, refusing to be fooled by her beauty. Even with the large scar that covered a small portion of her face shimmered like black jewels in the moonlight. But yet, her eyes showed concern as she took the tired group in.

“Aren’t you going to hop on? You won’t survive another night out here.” She told them.

“Why would we go with you?! You’re just going to boil us alive in those blue flames of yours that killed our ancestors!” One of the others in the group exclaimed.

If he didn’t know any better, the leader swore he saw regret flash across her face.

She sighed and turned to walk away.

“I don’t sentence those under eighteen to the death penalty. Especially those who don’t know the full story. I don’t care if you don’t ever believe me. That is your own choice. At least let me help you so you don’t freeze out here.” She told them.

No one moved for at least a minute. She gave them one last look, one filled with sadness, then walked away, disappearing into the night. The group remained uncertain.

16-No, I’m not ok

As I looked out over the empty field, I let myself close my eyes and enjoy the silence. I didn’t get the chance to very often. It wouldn’t be silent for long. Already, I could feel the footsteps of a thousand feet or more coming towards me and those I promised to protect.

Some said I was lucky. To rule with absolution and to have such loyal subjects. To have such power at my fingertips.

Yet I would give anything to give it all up to someone who was more worthy. Someone kinder, and wiser. Yet what could I do? Here I stood. Ready to bloody my hands again so others didn’t. risk my life so others could go home. Since mine was forever beyond my fingertips.

In the distance, I could hear the sound of a horn signaling. I grasped the hilt of my sword tighter, and positioned myself at the front of my men. In to time at all, the white snow beneath was painted red, and so was my fate.
