The Lazarus Problem Chapter 4

Marinette was expecting Jason to come in, but she wasn’t expecting a familiar source of the Lazarus pits to also come in. She was caught off guard, as she blankly stared back at Jason who seemed to be trying to find the words to speak. Her trance was broken by Jason’s voice cracking.

“Marinette?” He still looked as though she wasn’t really there.

“Jason!” She rushed toward him, and he swept her into a hug and spun her around.

“You’re MDC?” His hands rested on her shoulders as he looked her up and down, like he still didn’t fully believe she was there.

“And you’re a Wayne! I didn’t know whether you were alive or not till I moved back to Gotham. Not only were you alive, but you got adopted?” She said while swatting his arm.

“Yeah, it happened about a month after we were separated, I was caught trying to steal Batman’s tires. He then took me to Bruce, and you know the rest.”

Marinette ignored the lie, it had been years since they’ve seen each other and she of all people knew the importance of keeping a secret identity.

“Really, Jason? Batman’s tires? Please tell me it wasn’t the Batmobile.” She already knew the answer though. Trying to steal tires from the Batmobile was a very Jason thing to do.

“Okay, it wasn’t the Batmobile.” Jason said with a grin.

“Oh that was so believable,” Marinette teased while rolling her eyes. “Okay let’s start the fitting.”

After Jason had left the room where Marinette was working, he walked aimlessly around the Manor when he was accosted by Tim.

“Were you aware your friend is MDC?!” Tim grabbed Jason by the shoulders and shook him with urgency.

“Tim, don’t you think I would have brought that up if I had?” Jason swatted Tim’s hands away. “I was very much caught by surprise.”

It was well known that Tim was a huge fan of MDC. Getting to commission her was a big deal to Tim. After he had gotten confirmation on it he had sobbed face down for a good few hours in disbelief. If Jason had known, he might have kept it from Tim for shits and giggles, but would have most likely told him.

“Well, she lived in Paris for the entirety of the Hawkmoth situation. Should we see if she would be willing to help us with that?” Jason could see Tim’s mind racing. Marinette was a possible resource, because even though the Paris situation was known now, there was still a frustrating amount of mystery.

“We couldn’t ask, the Waynes have no reason to dig into Paris, while the Bats have no connection to her.” Jason paused. “Although maybe we could have one of the Bats come to her and ask, saying we let them know she might be able to help.”

“Well whatever we decide, you need to rekindle the friendship so I can befriend her. I can’t believe you know MDC.” Tim finally let go of him and started for the kitchen. Jason was pretty sure Alfred had already switched everything with decaf though. “I’m going to have to invite her to the Gala, even if she wants to attend anonymously.”

Batman stared back at a very unamused Wonder Woman. This was a necessary briefing but was already really uncomfortable.

“I understand you don’t like magic in Gotham, but the business of the Miraculous isn’t something you should get in the way of. She is there to help you, the effects of the Lazarus pits is a weakness that hinders Red Hood and Robin. To have it removed is an opportunity you can’t afford to pass up. As for seeing if she is telling the truth, I must meet her.” Wonder Woman wasn’t pleased he waited this long to tell her. She had been looking for the current Ladybug as soon as Paris had been revealed to the world.

“If she is actually there to do what she says then I’m okay with the magic, but for now she is still an unknown. To give her access to Red Hood and Robin without confirming her claims would be unwise. Robin is still partially convinced that she may be a spy from the League. Ra’s does have an unhealthy obsession with obtaining the Miraculous according to him.”

Wonder Woman shifted uncomfortably at that.

“Before my mother was Ladybug, Ra’s succeeded at just that. He used the Ladybug and Black Cat to create the pits. To make a wish is to rewrite the universe and it always has to balance out, like the negative effects. I don’t like to think what his next wish might be.”

Batman thought this over, if just one wish could create something as dangerous as the Lazarus pits, then Ra’s definitely needed to be kept from the Miraculous. Lyca was the close they had gotten to finding Ladybug. She seemed to be able to take care of herself, but Batman wanted to offer the protection of the Justice League. He’d sleep better at night if he knew that the League of Assassins would have to go through him before they could get to the Miraculous. Not to mention Ladybug and Chat Noir would be great additions to the Justice League.

“Well after you meet Lyca, let me know if she is who she says she is, and if she is willing to help us contact Ladybug. Meanwhile I’ll still search on my own to see if any leads appear.”

Batman held out the phone Lyca gave Jason. It had taken some convincing to get it from him, but it was the easiest way for Wonder Woman to reach the Fox heroine.

“Trust me, Bruce. She won’t be found unless she wants to.” She accepted the device.

So Jason was Red Hood, and Damian Robin. The kid had barely kept from trying to skewer her as she got her measurements. Marinette couldn’t blame the kid though. He had a significantly greater trace amount of Lazarus pit on him. As the grandson of Ra’s al Ghul she wasn’t surprised. But her commission had revealed the identity of the Bats, something she hadn’t expected to uncover.

While she was planning how that information could aid her in her mission, her phone rang. Not her main phone, the one that was connected to her yo-yo. She answered expecting a Bat to be the one calling.

“Lyca? This is Diana of Themyscira. I would love to meet with you, I believe I might be of some help to you.” Marinette dropped the phone in shock.

The Lazarus Problem Chapter 1

The Gotham airport teemed with people as Marinette tried to find the luggage claim. This was the first time in ten years she had stepped foot in Gotham. As the Guardian of the Miraculous, she was drawn to Gotham as there was a huge unbalance that permeated the city. She was returning despite the painful memories of her missing friend. She had lost track of Jason at 13 when she was adopted by Tom and Sabine. They got separated in the chaos of some stunt by a rogue, right after a fight about whether she should help in stealing for survival. It wasn’t the first time they had been separated on the streets, but this time Marinette was caught up with the foster system. Before she could even figure out a good escape plan, she was on a plane to Paris to meet the couple that had wanted to adopt from America. She always wanted to return to look for him. So, she applied to one of the best fashion programs, which happened to be at Gotham University. She was coming out of retirement and donning the mask again for this case. She will find Jason.

Hailing a taxi, Marinette was already planning the best miraculous to use. This had to remain unconnected to Paris and Ladybug. After the magical firewalls that had kept Paris’ villain a secret from the rest of the world fell, Ladybug and Chat were a topic of interest, especially with the Justice League and Batman. Now Marinette had to operate on Batman’s home turf. Undetected.

She had been planning contingency plans for every possible scenario that could go wrong and even had multiple escape plans. As the car pulled up to her apartment building, she grabbed her luggage and made her way up to her floor. A perk of being the Guardian of the Miraculous was she didn’t have to bring everything on the plane. She rented storage space in Paris and would be retrieving everything with Kaalki.

After she had mostly moved in, Marinette picked up the Fox Miraculous. Mirage would be useful on the rooftops of Gotham. She would use the necklace in her investigation of where the unbalance is coming from. She hoped to remain unknown, but if she was discovered she would use the name Lyca. ~~

The first night using the fox miraculous was like getting a part of herself back. She hadn’t activated a Miraculous since the defeat of Hawkmoth, and she missed the feeling of flying across the rooftops. As a realized guardian, she was able to use the mirage to be completely invisible without it affecting her timer. She didn’t mean to go so far from her apartment, but the rush was addictive.

She had promised herself to stay out of anything that might catch Batman’s Attention. She was only doing surveillance and investigating in relation to her case. No vigilante things, like crime fighting or rogue stuff. Unless it’s a mugging she could stop real quick or something. She could never sit by and let innocents suffer. (She refused to see how that contradicts her first promise.)

Tikki was with her, to help in locating where the bad luck was happening. As a long time Ladybug holder, she had a vague sense of where it was, but not as precise as Tikki. Plagg and Tikki had said there was a good chance it had something to do with the Lazarus Pits Plagg created to fulfill a wish long ago. She was assured it was unlikely there was actually a full pool in Gotham, but there was a good chance there were people that had taken a swim in them. ~~

It had been a week of trying to track down the source of the Lazarus trace left all over the city. She didn’t know whether to look toward the rouges or the bats, as a good portion of the trace could be found on the rooftops. Tikki had caught a newer trace, leading toward the docks. Lyca had to tread carefully as they were likely still in the area. From her observation of the Bats patrol, it was likely some sort of drug bust was happening. She had yet to be spotted by any civilian or Bat while she observed their patterns, which was undeniably lucky on her part. Lyca settled on the roof of a warehouse with skylights, peering down into a fight between some criminals and three Bats. Batman, Red Rodin, and Nightwing made their way through the remaining goons before securing whatever the two groups were trading. As she realized the source of the Lazarus pits was missing, her heightened senses warned her of a fourth figure about to land on her. Rolling out of the way and into a defensive position, she came face to helmet with the Red Hood.

“B, there’s an unknown on the roof, she was watching the fight,” Hood said into his comms as he tried to engage Lyca in a fight. Instead of doing that, she turned invisible.

“Fuck! She’s a Meta, I lost eyes on her. She turned invisible.” Lyca hadn’t moved after turning invisible, in case Red Hood could pinpoint her movements. Red Hood seemed to be trying to adjust his vision in his helmet to different settings to find her, but she knew her magic would keep her hidden. Shifting slightly from foot to foot, she weighed her options. She needed to get out of there five minutes ago. But the Lazarus pits were rolling off the Vigilante, setting off her senses. He was at least one source of unbalance.

There wasn’t anything she could achieve right now, and to neutralize the effects of the Lazarus pits, it had to be voluntary. She doubted Red Hood would be up for that right now. She decided to retreat before any of the other bats came as backup. As she dove off the side of the building Red Hood was distracted by Nightwing landing beside him. ~~

Looking back, Marinette probably should have put more precautions in place to stay hidden from the Bats. Like full time invisibility or staying away from active crimes taking place. That being said, she was now aware of one of the sources of the Lazarus pits. She had a gut feeling that the other source was another bat. She could rule out Nightwing as she had seen him. And then there was the problem of approaching them and convincing them to remove the effects of the Lazarus pits. Unfortunately, she was going to have to get involved with the vigilantes of Gotham against her better judgment. Curse trying to restore the balance. She needed coffee.

Marinette didn’t forget, per say, to try and find Jason. It’s just dealing with the Bats takes a lot of attention, and she was afraid of what she’d find. Tikki would call it procrastinating, but Marinette calls it protecting her sanity. It was still bugging her, and it seemed like she was seeing him everywhere. Once she thought she saw him in the background of a video about the latest Wayne Gala, and another time could have sworn he was outside a coffee shop near Wayne Enterprise. Marinette convinced herself in was a reflection or something, cause no one was around by the time she made it outside.

Once she finally got around to looking up his name, she almost cried at how easy it was. Jason had managed to get adopted by Bruce Wayne, of course he did. While she vaguely knew about Bruce Wayne and that he adopts kids, the last time she was in Gotham there was only one. And she didn’t try and keep up with that in Paris, Marinette was busy building a new life. Looking at the timeline, he was adopted really soon after they had been separated. Reaching out to them wouldn’t be easy, much less trying to run into him. ~

Her answer to her problem came in the form of a commission request a week later. She had finally opened them up again after finishing her move. Tim Drake had reached out for the whole Wayne family, needing clothes for the next charity gala. He was a big fan of MDC and had always wanted to commission her. Apparently Tikki’s luck was still working for her.

After reaching out and setting up an appointment, all Marinette was left with was nerves about the meeting with the Bats. But she had found Jason and the two sources of the Lazarus pits. So now all she had to do was reconnect with Jason, and then convince hyper-paranoid vigilantes that she was there to help. Fun.

The meeting with the Bats was setting to take place on Wayne Enterprise, the tallest building around. Most likely to keep random Gothamites from seeing most of the Bat family and an unknown meeting at 2am. It seemed like Lyca had gotten there first, but she knew better. At least one person was surveying the area, and it was only a matter of time til the rest got there.

Sure enough, five minutes later the faint sound of boots hit the gravel. She turns to face Batman and Red Hood. While the Bat sizes her up, Red Hood decided to make introductions.

“Batman meet Lyca, Lyca this is Batman. Uh, and you both already know me…”

“How do we know you really mean to help with the Lazarus pits? You very well could be a spy sent from the League of Assassins?” Batman waits impatiently for her to answer, probably so he can continue interrogating her.

“Do you know Ladybug and Chat Noir? And that they have Miraculous that they used?” Lyca points to her necklace, “I have the Fox Miraculous. I wasn’t Rena Rouge, but I did help the heroes in Paris. Now that Hawkmoth has been stopped, Gotham is the most unbalanced place. And how I can best help with that is helping you with the Lazarus pits.”

As expected, bringing up the Miraculous threw Batman off. She was aware that the Justice League had been looking for her. One of the reasons they hadn’t found her yet was because of the Miraculous magic, and her luck. If partly revealing herself help gain their trust, so be it. She could see the cogs in Batman’s head switch gears.

“I’ve been trying to get into contact with Ladybug, would you be willing to help with that?”

“She is already aware of that, the most I can do is pass along a message.” She wasn’t ready to step back into the earrings, and she figured this would at least get him of her back for now. Red Hood then spoke up,

“How would you even help with the Lazarus pits? I mean, I believe you but we’ve already looked into healing it and hit a dead end.”

“The pits were originally made by a wish using the cat and ladybug miraculouses. Ladybug and Chat Noir have given me the tools necessary to reverse the effects. I can delve more into it closer to when we actually do it.”

Red Hood seemed to accept that. Batman, however, seemed to still have some hang ups.

“I will reach out to Wonderwomen, and look into the fox miraculous. She may want to meet you.” Lyca nodded.

“That’s reasonable, if you want to reach me use this,” She handed Red Hood a phone Max invented that could connect to the miraculous and the Kwamis. “It’s untraceable both ways, and reaches me directly.” She didn’t feel the need to mention she could trace it if she really needed to. In case she ever needed to get the phone back, if it fell into the wrong hands.

Batman obviously wanted to ask more questions, but Marinette needed to go. Her consultation with Tim Drake was early in the morning and she had a lot of prepping to do.

“It was really nice meeting you Batman, but I’ll have to answer the rest of your questions another day.” Before he can respond she calls for Mirage and silently returns home. ~

Jason stared up at the ceiling as he laid back on the couch, waiting for his fitting with the designer Tim had obsessed over for ever. Tim and Bruce had already gone, while Dick was currently in there. Everyone had decided it was best for Damian to go last, so Jason was up next. The phone Lyca had given him was in his pocket, true to her word it was untraceable. Both Tim and Barbra had tried, when it was decided that magic had been used in the process of making it and they called it a night. Jason didn’t allow himself to feel hopeful that he could be cured, as it still felt to good to be true.

“Jason? It’s your turn.” Dick said as he popped his head into the library.

“Thanks, be right there.”

“Great, I’m going to go prep Damian. Try and bribe him to not insult or maim her.” And with that Dick disappeared.

Jason swung his legs over the edge of the couch and stood up. As he opened the door, the designer turned around and froze. She was painfully familiar, but the answer was harder to remember the harder he thought about it. She unfroze, blinking slightly. Immediately the answer came to him. An old friend, long thought dead was right in front of him.

He tried to speak, but he was in shock. Clearing his throat he attempted again.

“Marinette?” His voice cracked.
