One of my white whales came in the mail yesterday—the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s 1998 classic, The Dirty Boogie. It was the BSO’s third album, but the first where it really fired on all cylinders. The first BSO album was a thoughtful 1940s introspective crooning/jazz combo exploration, while the second was an exhausting attempt to get that combo to play the Stray Cats’ sound and it just didn’t work, despite the presence of super-producer Phil Ramone. But then something clicked—Setzer discovered how to play to the big band’s strengths and never looked back. The Dirty Boogie finds him revved up and fully committed from the first ballistic note. Unlike the previous LP, this isn’t mere product—he is present and excited and leaves it all on the field, backed by a red-hot band and arrangements that retain the precision of the second album while bringing a welcome return of all the musical wit and clever left-turns of the first album. Shockingly, it has never been re-released on vinyl, and only ever got a tiny US pressing back in 1998. If you go on Discogs, all those US LPs wound up in Japan for some reason, because the only ones for sale are from over there, making it an album that I had to concede defeat on and admit I would never find in the wild. I found it online (and not located in Japan) at a decent price and now here it is, joined by a promotional box of Dirty Boogie matchsticks given to me by my pal Captain Plaid back in the day. I dropped the needle on this album this morning and all the joy poured right out of my speakers as I’d hoped it still would. What a fantastic, glorious album.
