theaterofpain this is a great post and very much worth pointing out. re: the last paragraph, i am willing to bet money that most people who are into nfts know that computers work like this and just dont care, because the whole thing is beyond any common sense anyway. and the buyers who are realizing that anyone can download their shit and the scarcity is fake might be more likely to just realize they got scammed and give up than to go full supervillain imo

Yeah I'm also leaning in the direction that no serious effort will be made to make analog holes in NFT technology more constricted, but I want to stress that that's not automatically a forgone conclusion. Corporations have been implementing schemes to technologically enforce copyright for decades now (probably longer but I have no idea what copy-protection before like, the 1970s looked like) and we already live in a world where things like taking a still from a movie or making a back-up of a piece of media is harder than it needs to be for this exact reason.

I'm having trouble really developing this idea at the moment but it's also intertwined with issues like planned obsolescence and and walled gardens that allow for censorship.

It's worth understanding that disabling the ability to save NFT images completely is fundamentally impossible. Anything that makes it harder will break other functionality and also require buy-in from the companies that supply the software that the web runs on.

The reason for this is fairly straightforward. In order to display an image your computer needs to have data that adds up to that image stored in memory somewhere. It's very easy to get around current attempts at disabling saving of NFT images because it's just fairly straightforward and convenient to serve and render images the way we do it now, which is:

1. Your browser comes to a place in a webpage that says there should be an image. This includes a source which is just another URL

2. Your browser calls up that URL and the server on the other end serves up the entire image file, which your browser caches in your local storage to make it easier to work with.

3. Your browser renders the image by pushing the image data into your graphics card, which in turn puts it on the screen

Step 2 doesn't have to be so straightforward. It could involve layers of encryption or only keep the image in RAM or the server could scale and crop the image before serving it based on the needs of the page the image is being rendered on or it could only deliver it in parts or the only device you're allowed to download the image on could be locked down to prevent you having control over the software that renders the image. All of these things would make it harder for someone to save the image but it would require changes in the protocol and software that the web runs on and it would also make the web less convenient to use and, crucially, would not ultimately make it impossible to save the image because you still need to have a full image in local memory to do step 3 and there's not really anything you can replace step 3 with where that wouldn't be true.

I do think there are people who would be willing to make the web suck more if it meant being able to protect their apes. Whether or not they get there way will depend on what sort of resistance crops up to stop them.

Also @theaterofpain pointed out to me that the background of the body element is set to white and if you turn that off using dev tools the white bar becomes less visible and the scrollbar on the right becomes usable. Beginning to suspect the coding of this site isn't great.

Can anybody tell me what the white bar at the bottom of the dashboard (infinite scrolling off) is?
