thanks so much to @theartdistricts Paul Gauguin ‘Reclining Tahitian Women or The Amusement of the Evil Spirit’ Oil on Canvas 1894 Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek @glyptoteket Gauguin lost his job as a stockbroker in the financial crash of 1882; by 1885 he was seeking a new means of making a living. Plagued by bouts of depression, Gauguin finally decided to pursue his painting as an alternate career path. He returned to Paris determined to make a professional go of it, indeed, despite the fact that up to that time he entirely lacked formal artistic training. Meanwhile, Mette-Sophie and their children settled with extended family in Denmark. A several-month's stay in Brittany, at Pont-Aven, in mid 1886, proved a decisive turning point for Gauguin, who developed there a Symbolist style of painting in which flat, luminescent colors, like those of stained-glass windows, came to signify the local Breton peoples' natural and spiritual experience. During this trip and a subsequent sojourn in Brittany in 1889, Gauguin sought to achieve a new kind of "synthesis," or fusion of color, composition, and subject matter, not only from painting before a live model or landscape, such as in the manner of the Impressionists, but by bringing together numerous studies in a way that finally evoked the inner life of his subject over merely suggesting its outward appearance. Lift Me Up (2022) | Art Installation/Sculpture by J. Bonegard. 'Lift Me up', is a follow-up to the earlier, medicine-inspired piece, titled, 'The Art of Transfusion', video of which is available on YouTube. In addition to the works of abstraction that have come to define the artist, @J.Bonegard, art installations are another dimension to the artist's ongoing creative journey. The three separable components of the artpiece are loosely held in a state of balance, using the weight of one of the two oblique pieces to balance the other out. It is indeed an exercise in equilibrium. The featured photograph of the work, a triumvirate construct, is an example of how the artist continues to evolve, using the prior experience in the practice of surgery. The artwork, created using several disused orthopedic crutches, is another example of the artist's commitment to recycling, in this instance, using reclaimed disposable medical supplies for artistic purposes. The title of the work, 'Lift me Up', is a metaphor for the challenging moments in life, when one could benefit from the support of others, to better endure the storm. The somewhat acrobatic display of crutches tells a story that exceeds the expectation of visual esthetics, but much deeper, making one more aware of the need to be of support, and be a crutch to those who are vulnerable at heart. #ariellabudick @hauserwirth #parismaville #artinstallation #fondationvuitton #fondationvuittonparis #theartdistrict @librairiemariangoodman #lexpositionducentenaire #marcelduchamp #artcontemporain #contemporaryart #artconceptuel #peinturecontemporaine #conceptualart #hauserwirth #hauserwirth #fondationdartcontemporain #centredart #centredartcontemporain #galeriedart #artgallery #expoparis #exhibitionparis #artcurator #artcollector #artadvisor #collectionneurdart #artcollection #MGGNY #artoninstagram #lemuseealecole #mariangoodmangallery https://www.instagram.com/p/ChNpE5Ag8ky/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @theartdistricts @download.ins --- Edgar Degas ‘The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer’ Partially tinted bronze, cotton tarlatan, silk satin, and wood 1922 (cast), 2018 (tutu) _ On View The Metropolitan Museum of Art @metmuseum _ Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artist’s lifetime. _ Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. The quality of the Degas bronzes was tightly controlled and their edition was limited. Only twenty-two editions of the series of 72 figures were cast. Each bronze within the series was assigned a number from one to seventy-two. The first twenty editions were assigned a letter from A-T. In most cases these numbers and letters were incised on the individual bronzes. _ The series of 72 bronzes was completed before May 1921 when it was exhibited in Paris. Edition A, comprising the first and best casts of the series, was reserved for the important Impressionist collector Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer. She later acquired the first bronze cast of the Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (lettered A, but not numbered), which had been omitted from the initial series. In 1929 Mrs. Havemeyer bequeathed Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer and 70 of the 72 Edition A Degas bronzes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. https://www.instagram.com/p/CDNUyernMZp/?igshid=1rer37k5mg75a

#Repost @theartdistricts • • • • • • Pablo Picasso ‘Man with a Lollipop’ Oil on paper, mounted on canvas 1938 _ On View The Metropolitan Museum of Art @metmuseum _ Picasso turned the youth in the drawing into the weather-beaten old man seen in this painting. Given the artist's predilection for the sexual and the macabre, and as an astute reader of Freud, he was perhaps poking fun at those who, late in life, revert to childlike pleasures or seek substitutes for erotic ones.
