Florida declared a state of emergency before a white nationalist's speech — and protesters showed up with confetti, high-fiving state troopers

White nationalist Richard Spencer spoke at UF and protesters attended the speech.
Uplifting messages were written on confetti and spread around the street.
Many people chose to come together and denounce hatred.
Florida governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in advance of a speech at the University of Florida by noted white nationalist Richard Spencer.
It was Spencer's first speech on a college campus since he and other white supremacists participated in the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that turned deadly.
Aiming to get ahead of any potential violence at UF, the school ramped up police presence on campus and is spending about $500,000 on security for the event.
While the atmosphere was tense at times, it was also peaceful. Many protesters who decry Spencer's message and presence on campus chose to voice uplifting messages.
For example, confetti with heartfelt messages littered the street, and banners were flown touting messages of love.

A supportive community came together to lift each other up.

White nationalist Richard Spencer tried to speak in Florida but protesters weren't having it
Tumblr media
Richard Spencer definitely did not receive a warm or sunny welcome from the University of Florida.
On Thursday, massive crowds gathered to protest the white nationalist and alt-right founder's visit to campus. As he attempted to give a speech on his beliefs, he was overwhelmed by chants condemning white supremacy and neo-Nazism.

In protest of Spencer's arrival, students marched together in the streets outside the university, carrying signs and chanting against white supremacists, the KKK, and fascism.

Meanwhile, inside the auditorium crowds chanted phrases like "SAY IT LOUD, SAY IT CLEAR, NAZIS ARE NOT WELCOME HERE" and "GO HOME, SPENCER," making it nearly impossible for the alt-right leader to get a word in on the mic.

The incident was reminiscent of when Spencer was punched in the face earlier this year.
As CNN noted, in anticipation of Spencer's arrival Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Alachua County on Monday, so authorities had advanced notice and were present on the scene.
"I find that the threat of a potential emergency is imminent," Scott wrote in the executive order, explaining that protests and counter-protests have broken out at Spencer's visits to other universities in Alabama, Texas, California, and Virginia in the past.

Tennessee-Florida could move from Gainesville amid Hurricane Irma aftermath
The storm brought flooding and debris into the city.
No. 23 Tennessee is set to take on No. 24 Florida in Gainesville on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. ET, CBS), but there’s a chance the Gators’ first home game of the season might have to be moved. Hurricane Irma moved through Florida over the weekend, and the University of Florida was hit pretty hard. On Monday afternoon, the SEC released the following statement:
The Southeastern Conference is in communication with the athletics departments at the University of Florida and the University of Tennessee after Hurricane Irma passed through the Gainesville area overnight and early this morning.
"Now that the storm has passed through Gainesville, the University of Florida is working with local authorities to assess the effect of the storm on the campus and the Gainesville community, at the same time ensuring the appropriate security and local officials are available to host a game," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.
E-mail from the University of Florida to employees notes that Lake Alice has overflowed. You guys know what lives in Lake Alice, right?
— Andy Staples (@Andy_Staples) September 11, 2017
Lake Alice, which lies on the southwest end of campus, is filled with alligators.

There are also multiple trees down on campus.

Parts of two major roadways that lead into Gainesville (University and SR 26) are also closed due to flooding and debris, and there are high waters throughout Gainesville and on parts of campus.

Florida’s home game last weekend against Northern Colorado was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. My colleague Richard Johnson spoke with Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin about how these decisions are made:
The big decision: Keep the game in Gainesville at the original time? Move it earlier in the day? Move it to another site? Or nix it entirely?
Friday night in Gainesville wouldn’t work because the school wanted to free up as many hotels as possible. The team even gave up the hotel it usually stays in for home games.
Florida never got far enough down the road to make calls to cities like Jacksonville or Atlanta about playing there. Jacksonville wasn’t studied for too long because it is also in the path of the storm.
But there is one call Florida did make, in the name of due diligence.
“I actually called Jay Jacobs at Auburn, the AD at Auburn — they’re at Clemson this weekend — just to say, ‘Would your stadium be available?’ and he was open to it,” Stricklin said. “He was, ‘Absolutely, let me know how we could help,’ and we told him just to sit tight and don’t contact anybody. And in our internal talks, we decided that didn’t make any sense. We were just poking around at all the options, to make sure you flesh everything out.”
Auburn’s only about a five-hour drive from Gainesville.
There’s precedent for a move like that. LSU had its home opener moved from Houston to New Orleans in about six days’ time due to Harvey. FIU and Georgia Southern moved their Week 2 games to Birmingham, Ala.
It looks like the alternate destination for this game could be Atlanta, but there are some conflicting reports about when a decision will be made:
The replacement destination (if needed) seems to be Atlanta, but an MLS soccer game seems is set to take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That game appears locked in, with no chance of moving.
That doesn’t rule out Atlanta, though. Bobby Dodd or even Turner Field (yes, that Turner field) were thrown out as options from Barrett Sallee.
MLS match at the Benz Saturday, Falcons on Sunday. Could be played at the artist formerly known as Turner Field or Bobby Dodd. https://t.co/tsnbJWH3jg
— Barrett Sallee (@BarrettSallee) September 11, 2017
I was told by sources no timetable has been set for making a decision. Damage to Gainesville is still being assessed.
— Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) September 11, 2017
Expect decision on the Tennessee-Florida game by early Tuesday morning, Atlanta most likely option if game can't be played in Gainesville.
— Trey Wallace (@TreyW_Radio) September 11, 2017
Turner Field has been converted into Georgia State’s new football stadium, so it’s a solid option along with Bobby Dodd, since Mercedes-Benz will be occupied.

Tweeting and the Women’s March on Washington
I’m writing this post on the way to Washington D.C. to cover the Women’s March on Washington for the Alligator. I and the paper’s photo editor, Grace, are crammed in the back of a bus full of about 50 women from Gainesville. It’s about 10 p.m. now, but since we took off three hours ago my twitter notifications have been going off nonstop.
Grace started off today tweeting about our upcoming trip, which was shared by the Alligator account. That initial tweet alone has received 32 favorites, which is rather high for the paper’s tweets, especially on a platform that updates so quickly.
In just a few hours, @k_newberg and I will be on our way to D.C. to cover the Women's March for @TheAlligator. Stay tuned for updates!
— Grace King (@gracelking) January 20, 2017
The two of us also shared a Facebook Live video telling our followers what we’re doing and how to follow along on Twitter. Tomorrow I’m going to make my own video to post to the Alligator page, also encouraging people to follow along on my Twitter account.
The struggle I’ve always had with Twitter was using it to primarily promote my own articles. I’ve had a lot of experience live tweeting, but it was all Student Government meetings instead of tweeting “what I was seeing” during breaking news. I hope this weekend will change that. I’m going to be tweeting a lot and all of it will be reactions from people protesting and live updates of whatever’s happening during this historic march.
I tried my hand at tweeting like this when the bus first took off. That tweet alone—which seemed like a simple update on how the trip was going—got 16 favorites, which is pretty high for me. A UF professor on the bus followed me because of it, and Grace and I plan to track her down for an interview tomorrow.
On the road to D.C. This bus has over 50 women and another is behind us. Stay tuned for updates tonight and tomorrow. @TheAlligator
— Katelyn Newberg (@k_newberg) January 21, 2017
I’m incredibly nervous for this weekend, but I also wouldn’t dream of doing anything else. Along with covering the largest story I’ve ever been assigned, I’ll be tweeting the most I ever had, Let’s hope I start some conversations, do some good reporting and even gain a few followers.
