Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal made in 1803, in which the United States purchased 828,000 square miles (2,144,510 km²) of land west of the Mississippi River from France for $15 million, or an average of three cents per acre. The purchase nearly doubled the territorial size of the United States and fostered the westward expansion of the young republic.
Background: The Louisiana Territory
The colony of Louisiana was founded on 9 April 1682, when French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle reached the mouth of the Mississippi River. La Salle erected a cross at the spot, and, in a ceremony performed before his own men and his Native American guides, he proceeded to claim the entire Mississippi Basin for France, naming it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV of France (r. 1643-1715). Shortly thereafter, he returned to France, where he convinced the king to give him control of the new colony. La Salle then embarked on another expedition to fortify the mouth of the Mississippi by establishing another French colony around the Gulf of Mexico. This expedition, however, was beset by difficulties from the start. La Salle was unable to rediscover the mouth of the Mississippi and was ultimately assassinated by mutineers in 1687.
Over the next several decades, scattered settlements began popping up around the Mississippi River. New Orleans was founded in 1718, on the site where La Salle had made his proclamation 36 years earlier, and quickly turned into a rich port city. Timber, agricultural produce, and high-quality furs were shipped down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, where they would be sent on to Europe or New Spain. Despite the wealth generated from New Orleans, the Louisiana Territory as a whole was not highly valued by France. In 1710, Louisiana governor Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac reported that "the people are aheap of the dregs of Canada" and that the colony was "not worth a straw at the present time" (Smithsonian). Therefore, at the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, France agreed to cede control of the entire Louisiana Territory to Spain. The exact boundaries of ‘Louisiana' were still murky, and the terms of the treaty granted Spain control of all lands west of the Mississippi River. At the same time, France ceded its northern colony of Canada to Britain, thereby unburdening itself of all continental colonies so that it could focus on its much more lucrative sugar colonies in the Caribbean.
Spain enjoyed a tenuous hold on the Louisiana Territory, which it viewed with disinterest, as little more than a buffer between British North America and Mexico. In 1783, the United States won its independence and gained control of the eastern banks of the Mississippi River. This led to rising tensions between the US and Spain, as each nation claimed the right to navigate the Mississippi, which had become a vital waterway for trade. This dispute was settled on 27 October 1795, with the signing of the Treaty of San Lorenzo, also known as Pinckney's Treaty. The agreement gave the Americans the right to navigate the entire Mississippi and allowed American merchants to store goods in New Orleans warehouses. While the treaty de-escalated tensions between the US and Spain, it increased American influence in the region at the expense of Spanish power, which had never been strong to begin with in the Louisiana Territory and was now on the decline.

Then, on 1 October 1800, Louisiana changed hands once again. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) – who had risen to power in France a year earlier – made a secret deal with King Charles IV of Spain (r. 1788-1808) in the Treaty of San Ildefonso. In it, Spain agreed to cede the entire Louisiana Territory back to France, in exchange for control over the Kingdom of Etruria in Italy, which King Charles wanted to give to his daughter. Napoleon was pleased by the easy acquisition of the Louisiana Territory, seeing it as the first step in re-establishing France as an imperial power in North America. He envisaged Louisiana as a breadbasket of sorts, shipping food and supplies to France's Caribbean colonies of Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint-Domingue, all highly valuable for their production of sugar. A significant condition of the Treaty of Ildefonso was that France could not turn around and sell the Louisiana Territory to a third party, as Spain was worried about having a hostile power so close to Mexico. At the time, Napoleon intended to adhere to this condition, although his plans would soon be turned upside down.

Some further bits from The Magi - I forget if I posted these or not.
----
Lorenzo de’Medici to the Platonic Philosopher Marsilio Ficino: Greetings, written in Tuscan I hear you mean to remain in Celle another few months though, truth be told, I would have you here with me for I miss your council and wisdom during these difficult times. You once wrote that the gifts others give: riches, honours, pleasures—they are all in fortune’s hand and therefore we have nothing surer than their uncertainty, nor more reliable than their inconstancy. I replied that I have oft’ experienced this and can safe safely now that what I had experienced of the vagaries of fortune is nothing to what I have been handed this past year. Always you are calm and sensible when I am the opposite. Always you are full of love and friendship for your fellow man, even when they may not be deserving of it. I would have you instruct me on how it is you can love men when you have seen what it is they are capable of doing. When you have your own losses and hardships at their hands. How can you see the brutality of the world we live in and write about hope? That is the advice I would have from you. That is the wisdom and council I seek. I wrote, many years ago now but it remains true, that nothing can bring light into my life as your joyful companionship and advice, which is of authority and full of such love. If our companionship failed, so too would part of my life. I intended to write this when your Cavalcanti remained in the City so I could send it through him to you, but I was not in a mood to write. You who have known me since boyhood know how I am when a dark veil has covered my mind making my hand unable to compose anything of worth. That is the case now. There are conversations we are long over-due to have that cannot be written. There are things I must explain to you and have you explain to me that we cannot commit to paper. Come to Florence so we may speak. If you do not, I will come to you. Poliziano sends his love. Landino says he has found a book you were after for your latest works on Dionysius the Areopagite. Palazzo de Medici, Florence, October 1478
---- Marsilio Ficino to the magnanimous Lorenzo de’Medici: Greetings It is with great warmth that your words have found wings with which to fly to me. You say that you have written this letter in a dark mood—and perhaps, yes, I can see your pain and grief within the lines, but that does not an ill-sent letter make. Indeed, I would rather have these short few paragraphs from you than nothing at all. It has been a long summer and now we enter autumn. I would not have us winter as strangers. You and I who, I always thought, had some understanding of one another. Remember always that Lorenzo is the sun of Florence and the sun is what creates Truth and Beauty while, at the same time, allowing us the ability to perceive Truth and Beauty. Therefore, the Truth and Beauty of the Republic and her citizens are created through you and through you we are able to see what we are. You make us and see us and we see each other and you. I meant to leave Celle this week, but I cannot for my mother has taken ill and I dare not leave her side until I know she is out of danger. She has taken with a stomach complaint, so while I fear for her, I do not fear for myself nor my household. If we were graced with Laurels, as poets can be, we would be honoured. Therefore, hasten to Celle if you desire, our Laurel tree of flowering Florence. Or simply write, if you prefer. Regardless how it is we will witness one another next, your Marsilio will greet you with love as he has always done and always will do.   Giovanni Cavalcanti sends his regards. San Leo a Celle, October 1478
-----------
I can safely tell you, dear readers, that Giovanni Did Not send his regards.
-----------
‘If he comes here it saves me going to Florence which is what I thought you wanted,’ Marsilio snaps. He and Giovanni have taken to the gardens to walk the olive groves. Lizards skitter here and there. Somewhere, a wren sings. Marsilio swallows discomfort at the sound of the song. ‘I would have you safe,’ Giovanni replies. ‘I am safe—Lorenzo will not hurt me.’ ‘There were men butchered, without proof of guilt, and their corpses positioned in shop windows.’ Giovanni stops, hands pressing into his hips as he stomps ahead of Marsilio. ‘You weren’t there. You didn’t see how Salviati tried to use Jacopo’s body to save himself when they were hung from the Signoria windows. You haven’t seen the boys running through streets with their decayed body parts, hounds following them.’ ‘I’ve seen horrors in my life, Giovanni, I can well imagine what happened.’ ‘And now he has our blood flowing into the countryside to water absent crops on salted land left to us by Papal troops.’ ‘I thought you loved Lorenzo,’ Marsilio says, aware that he is beginning to sound plaintive. ‘He is a good man, beneath it all, I know that.’ ‘You believe him to be a good man beneath it all,’ Giovanni corrects. ‘And I love Florence. I love Florence with all that I am. I love her as much as I love you. But loving Florence does not require loving the Medici.’ Marsilio steals a glance around then grabs Giovanni’s arm, hauling him towards the oak grove. Not that there is anyone amongst the olives with them, but it is further from the house and he does not wish for anything to be overheard. It is a trouble, for them, that on the occasions when they quarrel it must be done in Tuscan. Giovanni cannot think in Greek fast enough to keep up with his emotions. Or so he says to Marsilio. ‘Well it is too late, I’ve invited him and he is coming.’ Marsilio smooths a hand over Giovanni’s face. ‘You need not worry. You’ll not walk out one morning to see me dangling next to the Pazzi and their fellow conspirators. My hands are clean.’ ‘Are they?’ ‘If Lorenzo was going to kill me, he would have done so already. I have not fled, I have not hidden away. At any time he could have sent men to collect me and bring me back to Florence to die and he didn’t and he won’t.’ With care, Giovanni takes Marsilio’s hands into his own. He kisses the knuckles once, twice, three times. He whispers into Marsilio’s skin, ‘You didn’t answer my question.’
everything is going great for everyone!!!!!!

#𝟭𝟲𝟰_𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗨𝗨𝗠_𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗦 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 [59 min] collaborative network radio performance
CONTINUUM a collaborative radio performance conceived by Roberto Paci Dalò for TACTUS Radio Festival on the 2nd of December 2023 between 19:00 and 20:00 CET, it was broadcast on Usmaradio together with a global network of radio stations.
The challenge was to work on radical improvisation without any conduction and prior rules, giving a maximum of freedom to the participants. Most of the artists, performing from different locations, didn’t know each other and actually never talked to each other before the performance. Obviously the key of the project was an extreme attention during the performance from any single artist: “the art of listening” with 18 people performing together on-site in the Republic of San Marino and remotely from the USA, Germany, and Austria.
subtle texture of sounds with an amazing quantity of moments of silence despite the massive use of live electronics. The performance somehow proved that the planned lack of conduction can be balanced by the level of attention and involvement from the performers. It was a mesmerizing immersion in an acoustical world where electronics graciously merged with acoustical instruments and voices  nocturnal winterreise across galaxies.
CONTINUUM intended to develop the praxis of the “telematic performance” which the beginning of the 90s. Especially around activators such as the programme ORF Kunstradio in Austria, the Ars Electronica Festival and L’Arte dell’Ascolto radio festival, seminal projects such as Cheap Radio, Horizontal Radio, Rivers&Bridges, Realtime, designed an innovative use of telecommunication technologies in conjunction with the broadcast and telephone networks. The artist Robert Adrian was one of the major inspirations for many artists in the field. The arrival of the Internet obviously greatly the possibilitglobal interaction artists who could now participate from their personal spaces and with minimal need for financial support. But at the same time this provoked national broadcasting corporations reduce their involvement in such experimental projects. Let’s think of the infrastructure, technologies and the great professionals working in radio stations. The role of the engineers and their inspiring relationship with the artists has always been crucially important in such projects. CONTINUUM wanted to link these practices from the past bringing together both independent and broadcasting corporations in order to act in our present and investigate the possibilities of today’s technologies. MY FAVOURITE EUROVISION ENTRIES: DAY 46 - Spain
youtube
Spain is such a powerhouse of a country, especially lately. It’s so annoying that they have only won twice, back in 1968 and 1969.
From this year’s Slo Mo by Chanel, Dancing in Rain by Ruth Lorenzo, Amanecer by Edurne, and La Venda by Miki Nuñez.
Today however it’s back to 2012 with another one of my favourite songs of all time from the contest with Pastora Soler - Quédate Conmigo. Such a beautiful and powerful song from a performer with such a strong voice.

"The last son of Piero the Gouty and Lucrezia Tornabuoni, Giuliano was born in 1453, four years after Lorenzo. His grandfather Cosimo the Elder , wealthy banker and astute politician, was the one who started the fortune of the Medici family.Giuliano was attractive, elegant and very good at jousting, he had a very special place in heart of the Florentine people. He was very close to his brother, who was effectively at the head of the Florentine Republic and the Medici bank. Lorenzo was an able diplomat and politician who has been defined as ‘the needle on the Italian scale” in the turbulent second half of 1400. The two brothers were equally admired and envied by their fellow citizens.
From the portraits by Botticelli and later Bronzino, he had dark hair, and was slim and elegant.Giuliano’s premature death on 26th April 1478 is a consequence of the so-called Congiura dei Pazzi, or Pazzi Conspiracy. The Medici boys had many enemies, in and outside Florence, political rivals that wanted to put an end to their growing power.
Members of the Pazzi family plotted with the Pope and other Italian rulers to get rid of the Medici. They planned the assassination of both Lorenzo and Giuliano for the 25th April, by poisoning during a banquet. But Giuliano was unwell that day and didn’t attend, so the plan was postponed. The following morning, during Easter Mass, Giuliano was struck in the head and, as he lying on the Cathedral floor, Francesco de’ Pazzi inflicted no less than 19 wounds on his body.
Lorenzo managed to escape, but Giuliano ended up buried in the Old Sacristy church of San Lorenzo in Florence, the ‘Medici church’ where they are all interred."

What are the human names for all the characters in you highschool AU? Sometimes I get a little confused while reading
I still use some of the canon/popular fanon names for some charas and I'm also gonna include some OCs of mine too just to use em for something(either for student body or for staff, I'm still figuring out most roles tbh).
Sweden: Berthold
Denmark: Mikkel
Norway: Lukas
Iceland: Emil
Finland: Timo
England: Arthur
Scotland: Alistair
Republic of Ireland: Darick
North Ireland: Kathleen
Wales: Dillan
Australia: Kyle
New Zealand: James
South Italy: Lorenzo
North Italy: Feliciano
San Marino: Bria(Mrs. De Rosa)
Vatican City: Clemente(Mr. Fiore)
Byzantine: Basil(Mr. Comnenus)

Russia: Ivan
Belarus: Natalya
Japan: Kiku
Osaka: Tetsuya
America: Alfred
Canada: Matthew
France: Francis
Spain: Antonio

Netherlands: Lars
Belgium: Laura
Luxembourg: Noah
Cuba: Máximo(possibly a place holder name, but it is growing on me)
I'm still figuring it all out, especially ASEAN's roles and whether I want them to be this like group of "we're too good for you" kids or a group of kids from another school's rival team(volleyball or something idk) that tries and fails at intimidating the others(who also try and fail at intimidation mind you). Y'know. Cliched drama but it goes wrong. Like a lot. With that being said, I've yet to look into names for them for them all. And I'm still adding charas and such too. I'll post a more solid updated list as well as with some info once I get it all figured out ^u^

For the sixth and final episode of Season 3, we are pleased to announce an episode curated by Tosh Basco with Sophia Al-Maria, Patrick Belaga, Kelton Campos, Enantios Dromos, Josh Johnson, Asma Maroof, Fred Moten, Lorenzo Moten, Julian Moten,  Matthew Stone and Wu Tsang broadcasting on Wednesday 6th October 9PM BST / 4PM EST / 4AM CST REPLAY on Friday 8th October 10AM BST / 5AM EST / 5PM CST TRANSMISSIONS is back for Season 3!  In the past year we have learned that all forms of community are vital in providing mechanisms to support each other through this precarious time. In the continued pandemic landscape that we occupy many artists, writers and thinkers have had and continue to have exhibitions, opportunities and subsequent fees postponed or cancelled. In response to this, we established TRANSMISSIONS in 2020 as an online platform that commissions artists to share their work within a classic DIY TV show format. Our new season for 2021 comprising 6 episodes will stream on a monthly basis via our website from March to October 2021. Season 3 is supported by: BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Chisenhale Gallery, Forma Arts and Media, Manchester International Festival, Netwerk Aalst, Somerset House Studios, South London Gallery & Wysing Arts Centre.
Episode 6 | 6 October | 9PM BST | 4PM EST | 4AM CST REPLAY |  8 October | 10AM BST | 5AM EST | 5PM CST The Band and Friends The things that emanate from the ones I love. W/ Sophia Al-Maria / Tosh Basco / Patrick Belaga / Kelton Campos  / Enantios Dromos / Josh Johnson / Asma Maroof / Fred Moten / Lorenzo Moten / Julian Moten / Matthew Stone / Wu Tsang Tosh Basco
Tosh Basco is a movement-based performance artist whose work operates through improvisation as a mode of survival and world building in the liminal, performative space where becoming meets representation. Adamant about the visceral experience of live visual performance, she makes a case for how the movement of form can communicate what remains impenetrable in images, and through language. Her performances have been presented at the Gropius Bau, the Venice Biennale, the Sydney Biennial, the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, MOCA Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, ICA London, and Berghain. Tosh Basco has toured with Mykki Blanco, and collaborated with Korakrit Arunanondchai and Wu Tsang, as well as the streetwear label Hood By Air.
Thank you to:

💢 (looking at josep. *oh boy*)
Send 💢 to see my muse at their angriest
Tumblr media
Late July 1521, Ca'Vespucci, San Marco District, the Republic of Venice
The scraping noise was tangible, a heat felt in the fingertips through the ears. Boiling blood was pumping through his veins, a certain ringing blocking out all sound. A seething flame amidst the dense fog forming in the miserable midsummer night, with heavy plodding for footsteps across the watery streets.
He is untouchable. Barring the blades that scraped along the rails and walls here and there. But he does not care. Un. Dos. Dues espases. A saber in each hand. One for the elder. One for the younger. Premeditated. Planned. But it would not be enough. A life for a life. But he knows full well that these two have killed more than their youngest brother more than once. More than twice. More than ten times.
Tumblr media
Ten years. Ten whole long years living a lie. A life taken by his own hands to a lunacy that could have been prevented. And with the blood red moon full tonight, more blood shall be spilt in an unfathomable vengeance.
Entry into the house was unchallenged. Enough of the black fog billowed through the walls prompted some to flee for their lives. A wise decision. There were those who attempted to strike at the mysterious intruder, but none of their own weapons connected. The decision to flee as well was swift. Excellent. Because he didn’t come for their lives.
He came for their masters.
He spotted his first victim. One of the brothers was there at the parlor. The younger brother–full of vibrancy and life, a man of merrymaking and pleasure. How dare he party away, wantonly carousing while a small child was locked up in a moldy cellar, constantly hungry and unclothed as the acqua alta would threaten to take his life before starvation does. The brother panicked at first as the intruder called out for him, the black fog billowing so thickly that the parlor became darker than night. But the panic subsided quickly. Instead of begging for his life, the young man spun around with his arms stretched out… laughing. Crying. Embracing his doom. As though he knew it was coming to him.
Hadn’t Josep been blinded by his rage for Giovanni’s suicide, he would have chosen a far crueler fate for Lorenzo. Life. Life to wallow in his sins, to allow his guilt to destroy him. To devour him from the inside out. But no. This man is smiling upon seeing. Even if the smile was to embrace death. Is it for his shame? His guilt? For penance? It didn’t matter. All that did matter was that Lorenzo was smiling. Happily. And he would not stand for that.
Even if he wasn’t begging for mercy, he made sure he screamed. Josep’s saber went through Lorenzo’s torso at first, the sword making sure it cut through flesh like a butcher knife to meat. He ensured the tip of the blade would pierce, and he dug in deep enough to feel resistance as he twisted the sword. Slowly and surely. And he’d do it again. And again. And again. Blood on the floor, blood on the walls, blood on the ceiling. Cast off on the parlor table, onto the chairs, onto the carpeting. The smell of iron was wafting across the room like stuffing as Josep kept swinging, stabbing, and twisting. He couldn’t stop. Even if Josep wanted to.
This was unlike when he stabbed that nobleman in Barcelona. As Josep kept on assaulting his cousin, he could feel his soul separating from his body, as though he was watching everything from the side lines. Disassociating. The smell of blood was reaching him in ways he thought it wouldn’t in many years. But instead of feeling fear and anguish, he felt rage. Anger. Wrath. All Josep could think of was unloading so many years of pain unrelated to the Vespucci Brothers onto Lorenzo, channeling all his fury into a single cause. Vengeance.
And he kept on going. And going. Stabbing. Slashing. Harder. Faster. Until the man was almost thoroughly decapitated and his body akin to smashed up pulp.
And as Lorenzo said his last words…
“Finalmente sei arrivato. Grazie, Angelo della Morte, per aver reso giustizia per quello che abbiamo fatto.”
It only sent Josep to a rage he didn’t know he could rise even further into. Through his cousin’s mouth, Josep continued to stab and mash over. All until what was left over was a layer of red congealing into black across the parlor floor.
…..He is not done. The other brother must be in the study. The study that belonged to the one and only grown adult Josep ever loved and trusted during a time he needed one. And now, the other brother sat on Uncle Antonio’s chair. He is not. Josep is far from done. He picks up his second saber, the first fully spent as it stuck onto Lorenzo’s mutilated corpse. He is ready.
